Violent Crime Spikes Among Arabs in Israel as Officials Admit Neglect

Killings of Arabs by Arabs have soared in Israel. The prevailing assumption, an official said, was “as long as they are killing each other, that’s their problem.”

By Isabel Kershner
Oct. 2, 2021, 10:37 a.m. E

… The shooting last week was just one of at least 16 homicides in Israel’s Arab communities last month, and one of nearly 100 so far this year.

The killings — not by Israeli soldiers but by Arab criminals — account for about 70 percent of all Israeli homicides, though Arabs represent just over 20 percent of the population. The surging violence has shocked the country and put a spotlight on what the government acknowledges to have been decades of neglect of crime in Arab communities.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has described the violence as a “national blight” and will head a new ministerial task force to combat the problem that is set to meet on Sunday.

Omer Bar-Lev, who as Israel’s minister of public security oversees the country’s police force, decried what he said was “the prevailing assumption that as long as they are killing each other, that’s their problem.”

The spike in killings has spawned an “Arab Lives Matter” campaign. But unlike the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States, Arab leaders are begging for police action.

“Can the Israel police really not overcome a bunch of criminal gangs?” demanded Ayman Odeh, the leader of an Arab alliance in Israel’s Parliament, at a demonstration last week. “Of course it can, but to put it simply, it treats us as its backyard.”

The number of homicides within the Arab community has spiraled in recent years, from 58 in 2013, according to the police, to about 97 in 2020, and at least 98 so far this year. An Arab citizen of Israel is far more likely to get killed by a fellow Arab than by the Israeli police, and more Arabs have been killed by Arabs in Israel so far this year than have been killed by Israeli security forces in confrontations in the occupied West Bank, which receive much greater attention.

Fewer than a quarter of the cases have been solved, a symptom, critics say, of both police indifference and Arab distrust of the police.

Violent Crime Spikes Among Blacks in America as Officials Admit Neglect

Killings of Blacks by Blacks have soared in America. The prevailing assumption, an official said, was “as long as they are killing each other, that’s their problem.”

… The shooting last year was just one of at least 9,941 homicides in America’s Black communities last month, up from 7,777 in 2019..

The killings — overwhelmingly not by white policemen but by Black criminals — account for about 57 percent of all American homicides, though Blacks represent just over 13 percent of the population. The surging violence has shocked the country and put a spotlight on what the government acknowledges to have been decades of neglect of crime in Black communities.

President Joe Biden has described the violence as a “national blight” and will head a new ministerial task force to combat the problem that is set to meet on Monday.

Merrick Garland, who as America’s Attorney General oversees the country’s police forces, decried what he said was “the prevailing assumption that as long as they are killing each other, that’s their problem.”

The spike in killings has spawned a “Black Lives Murdered” campaign. But unlike the failed Black Lives Matter movement, Black leaders are now begging for police action.

“Can the American police really not overcome a bunch of criminal gangs?” demanded Jim Clyburn, the leader of a Black alliance in America’s Congress, at a demonstration last week. …

The number of homicides within the Black community has spiraled in recent years, from 6,261 in 2013, according to the police, to about 9,941 in 2020, and at least 98 so far this year. A Black citizen of America is far more likely to get killed by a fellow Black than by a white policeman, and more Blacks have been killed by Blacks so far this year than have been killed by white security officers, which receive much greater attention.

Fewer than half of the cases have been solved, a symptom, critics say, of both police indifference and Black distrust of the police.

A curious comparison …

I'm pretty pissed at Steve right now. I just read an article in USA Today that totally opened my eyes to the REAL problems!

    ***
Black victims remain underrepresented in U.S. news broadcasts, and as a consequence, they're rarely recognized socially as crime victims deserving of justice or empathy. Uneven news coverage also aggravates racial tensions between Black and white Americans by perpetuating a narrative of white victimization, which flies in the face of reality.

Lawmakers have stayed true to their political party ideologies when approaching violent crime based on these flawed narratives. On one side, liberals tend to recognize the importance of race, but they regularly propose initiatives lacking genuine cultural responsiveness to the Black experience. On the other, conservatives raise arguments for larger police forces and “tough on crime” policies that ultimately burden Black households.

Amid this ongoing political tug of war, very little recognition has been given to those most likely to be violently killed but also most likely to be depicted as predators – Black boys and men. Black males are criminally racialized as perpetual suspects, owing largely to their overrepresentation as offenders in popular and news media.

  2. The ironic second version would be realistic were US a white nation state.

  3. If the NYT reported violent crim in proportion to its assailants, one might think blacks are far larger in number than the actual 13% or so that they are of the population.

However, TV already suggests they are roughly half the population (the other half seems to be gay), so the black share of violent crime would strike the average insouscient American as being much out of line.

  4. Steve, I think you should’ve changed the byline on the second, phony article. Maybe switch the letters of Isabel and make it “Balsie Kershner.”

  5. This is a sociologically interesting phenomenon. It might be related to the secularization of the Arab population, or it could be a vacuum being filled that was formerly occupied by Jewish criminal organizations, or all of those things.

    Yes.

I had some acquaintances with significant time in the Arab world. They remarked on the emotionalism and quick resort to violence; one said fistfights in the marketplace were a daily occurrence. The thought was that the ritualized "Peace Be Upon You" aspects of Islam helped keep the interpersonal violence in check.

What do the two groups have in common? Lots of angry young men that are as hot of blood as they are dim of mind. Maybe Garland should try to get between a pair of them engaged in a fight, to try and calm them down. Good luck with that...

Probably a good idea. My sleepy Midwest metro area of 250,000 had a homicide in the middle of downtown in broad daylight where a black felon out on bail for another felony crime shot and killed a white fireman for no reason other than megalomania. Given that this happened in broad daylight, if I were a fireman I'd probably demand a vest.

Yeah, well, Arabs are different from blacks in a lot of ways. Arabs are a civilized people. They live in tight-knit families where people take responsibility for one another. At the village level, they maintain order so that commerce flourishes; no "food deserts" for them. Again unlike blacks, they can keep the water running even when left to themselves; civilization doesn't collapse around them. They're entrepreneurial and hard-working (much to the chagrin of their Jewish competitors).

So don't think of blacks. Think of Mexicans. And as for the crime, think of Italians (back in the day). The murders are by and large either well-planned hits between rival mafias, or vendettas. I know that's not great (especially in comparison to the Jewish population, which has a murder rate typical of 1960s Sweden). But as with the Italian mafia, everyone has an interest in maintaining peace (because after all mafia wars are bad for business). And there are well-established customs for defusing vendettas (principally, by Wergeld).

And a final contrast vis-a-vis blacks: Arab criminals are good marksmen.

    Replies: @Reg Cæsar, @JohnnyWalker123, @Bardon Kaldian, @Ian Smith, @Achmed E. Newman

  20. This reminds me of Aedon Cassiel’s article from 2017 – “Is the War on Drugs Racist?”. Turns out that blacks pretty much asked for the war on drugs and they got what they were asking for.

In a nutshell: Black crime was out of control. So blacks lobbied for tough drug laws and enforcement. Then they started bitching about police brutality. Then crime gets out of control. Now they’ll circle back to where this all stared….

    It’s all so tiresome.

  21. “as long as they are killing each other, that’s their problem.”

That’s a sentiment that is actually often expressed on this site when black-on-black crime is mentioned. And frankly, that is exactly my attitude to Arab-on-Arab violence in general.

A Black citizen of America is far more likely to get killed by a fellow Black than by a white policeman

Well, duh – I should hope so. How did we get to the point we feel the need to point out that citizens are more likely to be killed by criminals than by police ?!? Shouldn’t that go without saying?
This just shows how far we’ve drifted from the idea that police are indeed supposed to be there to “serve and protect” and not to “occupy and dominate”.

Bad news, dad; the USA will NEVER allow the blacks, the whites, or any other racial or ethnic group to form their own independent nation on American territory. Calling for the breakup of the United States along racial or ethnic lines is a threat to national security, and you should be aware of the extremely dangerous road you're on when you do so.

  23. Rob says:

I will grant you this: you take citizenism seriously. How does it feel; being all alone? No one in the media can discuss this “problem” for two reasons. You write about it, and they don’t consider it a problem. Let’s tackle the first one. You, Steve Sailer, along with softcore WNs like the American Renaissance guy, Jared Taylor, and others have turned this into a hatefact. According to the FBI or some non-governmental law enforcement agency, like the SPLC, says 13/50 is a white “supremacist” shorthand/meme, the meaning of which should be obvious.

Do you know how Paige Harden is the prog trying to bring the rest to reality very gently? It took 60 years, counting 1960 as the year thinking genes were correlated with race, which correlated with ability, became verboten. Though that year is more likely 1945, I did not feel like doing the math. Not even confident I got 120 – 60 right. It took that long for a prog who is familiar with the research to risk sticking her neck out. The left is not a monolith. It is a bunch of laypeople, donors, and activists. There is no way “the Left” can promise someone immunity to cancelation and a lifetime of being their boogeyman like Edward O Wilson was before he retooled as Save the Biosphere Man. Even if one group of donors says they won’t keep her from ever getting a grant again, well, the progs who work at the funding agencies can do that freelance. They probably won’t even have to discuss. She is a good team player and is carefully ceding ground to keep the Blacks Are Not Genetically Dumb land from being razed by the HBD army.

So Harden is ceding empirical ground to keep ethical ground and a sacred piece of empirical ground. She’s only doing that because the evidence for genetics causing trait variance is overwhelming. Decades looking for an intragenerational environmental cause, and they have found zero. Ok, they have found half of one, genetic nurture. There is a small correlation of your phenotype with the parental genes you did not receive. Put aside that this correlation may be caused by assortive mating. That is a hilarious environmental cause to find.

Nothing is hurtling to reality, like the coming incontrovertible proof of “racial” differences in psychological traits that is coming for nurturists, for the black murder rate. There are so many “environmental” differences between black and white lived realities that one could spend (and researchers did) a career correlating each one with the crime rate, and being all “poverty causes the murder gap” or “single mothers cause the murder gap” because these things are strongly correlated with the murder rate of blacks. But are any of them truly environmental, or are they caused by cognitive differences between populations?

My money is that the only “environmental” causes of racial gaps that anyone will discover are genetic nurture, as above, or “genetic neighbor” a term I have just coined for how the phenotypes caused by your neighbors’ genes influence your phenotype. Willing to bet you could go in 5 houses or street by street and correlate murder rates with the genotype distribution of the neighborhood. But is that environmental in the sense that we could alter it? I also think it would change considerably if the government tried to redistribute blacks so )))certain((( whites got the dregs. Then the black crime rate would likely correlate with alleles that result in lower white crime rates, as the ghetto blacks will think, “look at all this easy prey.”

Back to 13/50. It is a hatefact. No one can bring it up because white nationalists and realists have tainted it. It does suggest that we can influence the national discussion by taking problems off the table as things they can talk about. Things you can’t talk about become things you can’t repair. Wonder if anyone has a nationally representative sample of black and white HS seniors’ GPAs. Or, likely easier to find, the white and black SAT averages last time it was offered. Then, they would not be able to talk about that, the SAT would get canceled even more quickly than it is, and they lose a tool to make the system function. Because white nationalists would use it as shorthand for “blaques R dum” the media could never harangue us about the test score gap ever again. Ah, found it on the first couple of links from duckducking, 1114/933 SAT averages in 2019. Someone who did better on the math section than I did can “subtract” one of those numbers from the other, which, if I understand correctly, gives the “difference” between the numbers.

Holy crap! Asians beat whites on the verbal section? Pretty good evidence that verbal no longer measures intelligence, as like every single study has shown that Asians have a verbal deficit compared to whites. Or is it just compared to their math/visual? Maybe we should be all, -1.1σ for the black IQ gap, as Coleman has well and truly destroyed the SAT.

    Bring back analogies!
They’re too hard to study for?
    That’s the effing point!

IQ tests should be hard to study for. Shame we can’t add backward digit span. Seriously, with the SAT turned to crap, maybe there is room for a new test that just cheats. Accurately everyone’s IQ, then just shift the black distribution up until the means are the same. Be all, “our tests are proprietary. No, you cannot see the raw data or the scoring system.” Have to have some way to make sure peps don’t identify as a lower race, though. Wily Asians would experience a blackening. Whites would check the white box, because of “playing fair.” Maybe need to take a photo at the test of every test taker.

Too long a comment. I’m not gonna talk about progs thinking the black murder rate is a problem.

  24. Off Topic:

    I was called the N-word

    by Larry Smith

In 2015, I took my then-8-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter to a play called “Anne and Emmett.” The play centers on a fictitious conversation between Anne Frank, the German-Jewish teen who died in a Nazi concentration camp, and Emmett Till, the Black teen who died at the hands of racists in Mississippi. The dialogue includes several racial slurs. I will never forget my son turning to me to ask what a “n—–” was. I told him that I would explain it to him after the show, hoping that he would forget. He didn’t.

I was conflicted. On the one hand, I was relieved that he didn’t know the history of the word, which meant that he didn’t know the pain that is associated with it. On the other hand, I felt guilty as I pondered whether my former wife and I had sheltered our younger children too much.

This memory came flooding back to me last Sunday after an incident with a 20-something white male. While on a grocery run, I made a legal U-turn at an intersection (as had several cars in front of me). This young man was turning right to go in the same direction. He pulled sideways in front of my car, gave me the middle finger and made a lewd gesture with his tongue and two fingers. Though I was surprised, I shrugged it off.

At the next light, which was red, his car stopped immediately behind mine. He hopped out, ostensibly to give money to a panhandler. But this was a pre-text. On his way back to his car he deliberately threw a small object at my car, hitting my door.

I jumped out of my car to confront him. As I approached his car, he began rolling up his window. (I may or may not have issued a strongly-worded challenge for him to exit his vehicle.) Initially, he declined my request, so I turned to go back to my car.

Up to this point, my subconscious assumption was that this was simply a conflict between two men; it hadn’t occurred to me that race was a factor. It was. He began calling me “n—–,” so I again asked him to get out of his car. He did, but not before securing a weapon that was similar to a crowbar, except that it had a handle instead of a curve on the end.

I approached him with the intent to fight. However, I suddenly became aware of screaming coming from three rows away. It was a 20-something white woman who was pleading with me to return to my car. In trying to convince me, she said, “Stop! I know it’s not you! Please get back in your car!” I paused for a second to consider my options. Then I turned and went to my car.

My two teens, brother and grandson were in the car. My daughter asked me what had happened. (She, my brother and my son were oblivious as to what was going on.) My kids were quite surprised to learn what had transpired, but that didn’t keep them from upbraiding me for potentially putting my loved ones in danger. I tried to explain how no self-respecting Black man would let such an incident pass, but they remained unconvinced. (Thankfully, my brother was squarely on my side.)

It had been several years since I had experienced anything similar, so I was caught off guard. In that moment, none of my titles, my degrees or my accomplishments mattered to me. (I’m certain that they wouldn’t have mattered to him had he known about those things.) My daughter suggested that I could have ended up in a jail cell if someone had called the police. Worse, I could have become a hashtag. Yet, all that mattered to me was defending my honor and my race.

I am reminded of Dr. King’s admonition about “the myth of time.” He warned us that racial progress “does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” I don’t know whether this young man is representative of his generation any more than young Black men who commit violent acts are representative of theirs. I do know that we, as a nation, are still far from the presumed goal of racial harmony.

Things you can't talk about become things you can’t repair. Wonder if anyone has a nationally representative sample of black and white HS seniors' GPAs.

  26. @Rob

Not even confident I got 120 - 60 right. It took that long for a prog who is familiar with the research to risk sticking her neck out. The left is not a monolith. It is a bunch of laypeople, donors, and activists. I notice 22% of blacks got the answer when there’s a 25% chance of getting it right with a random guess.

I have heard about this same 35 year old question dozens of times in every attack on the SAT.

When I took standardized tests in the 90s, they were already proto-woke with 80% of the reading passages about women or blacks.

In the Congolese capital Kinshasa, theft of catalytic converters is becoming an increasing problem. A mechanic told Reuters news agency that he has to help five to ten customers with a new exhaust for their car every day. The old catalytic converter has been cut off.

Drug dealers grind the honeycomb structure in the catalysts into a brown powder. Users mix it with crushed vitamin pills and sleeping tablets, or smoke it with tobacco. Bombe – as the new drug is called – makes you completely catatonic. Users stand blankly for hours or sleep for days.

New hard drug! In Congo, they get high from car catalytic converters

The prevailing theory about the marked rise in catalytic converter theft is that recyclers pay good money for them because the price of the precious metals within them has skyrocketed.

This is the first time I've heard about a drug connection, amidst a spike in catalytic converter theft in several major US cities. If there was any basis, even just rumors or urban legends, you can bet Vice or some other tabloid would have been all over the story ASAP.

Yeah, well, Arabs are different from blacks in a lot of ways. Arabs are a civilized people. They live in tight-knit families where people take responsibility for one another. At the village level, they maintain order so that commerce flourishes; no “food deserts” for them. Again unlike blacks, they can keep the water running even when left to themselves; civilization doesn’t collapse around them. They’re entrepreneurial and hard-working (much to the chagrin of their Jewish competitors).

So don’t think of blacks. Think of Mexicans. And as for the crime, think of Italians (back in the day). The murders are by and large either well-planned hits between rival mafias, or vendettas. I know that’s not great (especially in comparison to the Jewish population, which has a murder rate typical of 1960s Sweden). But as with the Italian mafia, everyone has an interest in maintaining peace (because after all mafia wars are bad for business). Instead of enclosing Blacks in collapsing urban areas, we should free them to live in the forests and grasslands of North America. Let them build inclusive, self sufficient communities in our national parks. They will be free to express themselves artistically and build their own uniquely Black societies.

It’s widely agreed that Black people are individualistic and extremely independent. They are inventive and resilient. Why not move them all the Hawaii?

On the other hand, that’s they way it works in America too – as long as Blacks kill each other, no one gives a hoot.

The problem is that society increasingly also doesn’t give a hoot when whites are killed by Blacks (“they had it coming, they said the n word, they were just proles, etc).

A funny and atypical example of an upside-down New York Times article, with no woke angle:

Moderna vs. Pfizer: Both Knockouts, but One Seems to Have the Edge

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/22/health/covid-moderna-pfizer-vaccines.html

It seems Moderna seems to be edging out Pfizer to a marginal extent in various metrics. We are told that the differences aren’t a big deal, nothing to see here. But we should probably look closer to determine the cause, experts say.

The subtleties emerged over time. The vaccines have never been directly compared in a carefully designed study, so the data indicating that effects vary are based mostly on observations.

Results from those studies can be skewed by any number of factors, including the location, the age of the population vaccinated, when they were immunized and the timing between the doses, Dr. Dean said.

Any number of factors, too many to fit in your head.

“In high-risk populations, it might be relevant. It’d be good if people took a close look.”

Yeah, why not take a look. Can’t hurt.

And then, all of a sudden in graph 25:

Several factors might underlie the divergence. The vaccines differ in their dosing and in the time between the first and second doses.

    Huh. You don’t say.

Vaccine manufacturers would typically have enough time to test a range of doses before choosing one — and they have done such testing for their trials of the coronavirus vaccine in children.

But in the midst of a pandemic last year, the companies had to guess at the optimal dose. Pfizer went with 30 micrograms, Moderna with 100.

So wait, you get three times the vaccine with Moderna?

Moderna’s vaccine relies on a lipid nanoparticle that can deliver the larger dose. And the first and second shots of that vaccine are staggered by four weeks, compared with three for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

The extra week may give immune cells more time to proliferate before the second dose, said Dr. Paul Burton, Moderna’s chief medical officer. “We need to keep studying this and to do more research, but I think it’s plausible.”

    Or maybe it’s something else.

Moderna’s team recently showed that a half dose of the vaccine still sent antibody levels soaring. Based on those data, the company asked the F.D.A. this month to authorize 50 micrograms, the half dose, as a booster shot.

So for the first two-thirds of the article we get: “disparity is small but real,” “not a huge difference,” “But truly, how much does this difference matter in the real world?,” “similar efficacy,” “I’m not convinced that there truly is a difference,” and “subtle but real differences.”

And then we get the information that the dose is triple for Moderna, and that the doses were just pulled out the asses of the pharma ompanies in the first place, since they didn’t have time to test a bunch of doses.

The strange thing about Arabs is that they are notoriously lacking ingenuity EXCEPT when it comes to violence. When sufficiently motivate by Allah, they become fiendishly clever, constructing all sorts of bombs and elaborate plots to hijack planes and so on. But they can't get their shit together enough to actually keep the power on and operate a sewage system and a functioning economy.

Digging a tunnel in the sand of Gaza is not that hard - it's not like they are boring thru bedrock. Nor are the shitty rockets that they build of any great technical merit. Anything of high technical value usually comes from Iran. Iranians are basically white people and are smarter than Arabs.

  59. Steve,
I’ve been doing some thinking about bell curves and the white black ratio in homicides.

It seems to me that the level of criminality, low IQ, violence, and disregard for consequences that needs to coalesce in a person to make them shoot up a middle school graduation party can be quantified sort of in the manner of polygenic scores. Second, it would take a considerable if not extraordinary confluence of these factors in a person to make them do this sort of thing. Rare in the overall population. But not rare in the black community. Why?

This got me to thinking about some earlier posts I read here concerning why chess grandmasters are almost exclusively male. NFL cornerbacks black. Kenyan distance runners. Etc. Basically when you have two different bell curves, and one is skewed a bit to the left or right, it has extremely outside impacts at the tails.

So a hypothesis I am considering is that on average black people are only slightly more violent than the general population. However at the tail end of the bell curve where the block party shootings happen, you will find zero Asians, few women and whites. They just don’t get to that zone of extraordinarily reckless violence.

Which gets me to thinking: it’s not fair to the general community of blacks to keep denigrating them for the “uncovered tail” of horrible actors. I’m sure they are just as upset and embarrassed about it as the rest of us. We all ought to be thinking about how to isolate and eliminate the tiny portion of ridiculously stupid and violent people responsible for most of the “senseless and random” killings.

They may have found a solution in the Congo. (Belgian, not French.)

Users stand blankly for hours or sleep for days.

    sociologically interesting phenomenon…

    Yes.

I had some acquaintances with significant time in the Arab world. They remarked on the emotionalism and quick resort to violence; one said fistfights in the marketplace were a daily occurrence. The thought was that the ritualized “Peace Be Upon You” aspects of Islam helped keep the interpersonal violence in check.

  64. “Can the … police really not overcome a bunch of criminal gangs?”

That’s where the analogy doesn’t hold up. I don’t know the details of Arab on Arab violence in Israel but it sounds like it might be related to rival drug gangs or something like that – what might be called “business disagreements”. If war is diplomacy by other means then gang killing is a means of settling business disagreements by other means – you can’t take your rival drug dealers to court if they are hemming in on your territory. The Italian-American mafia once actually had a formal decision making commission to adjudicate such disputes in order to cut down on such rival gang killings. In the absence of such a mechanism, killing your rivals is a rational decision.

By contrast, the post-Floyd wave of black killings seems to be much less business driven and much more impulsive. No amount of infiltration and dismantling of drug gangs will help if people are shooting each other over disagreements about parking spaces or their favorite football team, or people accidentally bumping into each other at a club, etc. These kind of disputes used to be settled among blue collar whites with fistfights. Maybe blacks would pull straight razors on each other. But in the ghetto black community now, they are settled with gunfire. There is little that the police can do to change this culture.

We know now that whatever Biden said , maybe “come on, man” was heard in Haiti as “men, come on in”. These things get filtered and distorted. Likewise, the elite response to Floyd’s death was ” black empowerment”. This was heard by ghetto blacks as meaning that each black person was empowered to take justice into his own hands.

You hear about Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslims in grooming gangs in the UK. Hindus and Sikhs… not so much. While I’d rather not take any immigrants from the Horn of Africa, I’ll take Ethiopian Christians over Somali Muslims.

    by Larry Smith

First- you are right about Iranians. More than 80% of great creative minds in literature, sciences, mathematics, geography, medicine and philosophy during the Islamic golden age, from the 8th to the 12th C were Persians. But there were some great creative Arabs, too, for instance Ibn Batuta, Ibn Rushd/Averroes, Ibn Farid, Ibn Arabi etc.

They may have found a solution in the Congo. (Belgian, not French.)

This might be worth slightly dirtier air.

    Replies: @Sick 'n Tired, @Sollipsist, @roderick spode

The prevailing theory about the marked rise in catalytic converter theft is that recyclers pay good money for them because the price of the precious metals within them has skyrocketed.

This is the first time I’ve heard about a drug connection, amidst a spike in catalytic converter theft in several major US cities. If there was any basis, even just rumors or urban legends, you can bet Vice or some other tabloid would have been all over the story ASAP.

“Can the ... police really not overcome a bunch of criminal gangs?”

That's where the analogy doesn't hold up. I don't know the details of Arab on Arab violence in Israel but it sounds like it might be related to rival drug gangs or something like that - what might be called "business disagreements". If war is diplomacy by other means then gang killing is a means of settling business disagreements by other means - you can't take your rival drug dealers to court if they are hemming in on your territory.

We know now that whatever Biden said , maybe "come on, man" was heard in Haiti as "men, come on in". These things get filtered and distorted. Likewise, the elite response to Floyd's death was " black empowerment". This was heard by ghetto blacks as meaning that each black person was empowered to take justice into his own hands.

We used to impose serious penalties, including death sentences, very rapidly, for criminal homicides. Today, killers get a slap on the wrist. Cops can’t do anything about a voter base opposed to serious punishments for homicidal individuals.

There is a lot on You Tube about the “New Administrative Capital” - it has no name yet. I think its advantage is that it is in the desert very close to Cairo. Really it is like a new giant capital district of the greater Cairo area - being built for 5 million people. Because of its proximity to Cairo and the fact the very large bureaucracy is being forced to move to the new neighborhoods, it will be a success. Cairo is impossible.

Smells like plain old BS to me. Seems like a story geared toward the kind of person that falls for banana peel and adenochrome fantasies. My guess is that the "unnamed source" is either entirely fictional, or at most is a prankster having some fun with a gullible reporter that isn't doing basic research for his article.

I can't help thinking of the Jenkem hysteria. It's a very similar kind of story, from the same part of the world.

It's possible it's a "monkey see monkey do" situation. Somebody heard that people were stealing catalytic converters, and they were unable to grasp the real reasons -- so they assumed there was some kind of drug to be made from the mysterious stuff inside. Somebody cooked something up and they got a placebo effect, or just a good old carbon monoxide/dioxide reaction.

"The drink is sometimes adulterated by adding substances like jet fuel, embalming fluid or battery acid, which has the effect of giving the beverage more 'kick'.[4][5] Drinkers have suffered blindness or death due to methanol poisoning.[3] The water used to make the drink in illegal breweries is also often below acceptable health standards and sometimes contaminated with sewage."

I want to visit the Black community near me and encourage all Black people of color to love one another. People of color are inherently peaceful. That’s an historical fact we should recognize. Only when we brought these gentle beings here in chains, did they exhibit hostility.

I think Hawaii would be perfect. There they can bond with the remaining Hawaiians. Another proud people of color.

I had no idea about this.

They may just intend to call that Administrative Region "Cairo" or append it with AA (like DC). Though perhaps in Arabic that doesn't work as well.

Long ago I used to visit Cairo regularly for work. Back then very exciting and crowded of course. Safe then. People friendly.

I had the impression that Cairenes had been hosting visitors/tourists for a few millennia and were very used to that. No idea now, though probably even more crowded.

The only restaurant I have ever "walked a check" from was in Cairo. Something like the Swiss Restaurant (or some mention of Swiss). Food wasn't memorable but we waited over an hour for the bill, had to return to work. Near the big museum. The place seemed to empty out of staff after about 1 PM and finally we gave up and left without paying.

Slow pay there was the norm.

I liked Cairo, but once got malaria there. But that's another tale...

    Replies: @Muggles

    Thanks.

I had no idea about this.

They may just intend to call that Administrative Region “Cairo” or append it with AA (like DC). Though perhaps in Arabic that doesn’t work as well.

Long ago I used to visit Cairo regularly for work. Back then very exciting and crowded of course. Safe then. People friendly.

I had the impression that Cairenes had been hosting visitors/tourists for a few millennia and were very used to that. No idea now, though probably even more crowded.

The only restaurant I have ever “walked a check” from was in Cairo. Something like the Swiss Restaurant (or some mention of Swiss). Food wasn’t memorable but we waited over an hour for the bill, had to return to work. Near the big museum. The place seemed to empty out of staff after about 1 PM and finally we gave up and left without paying.

Slow pay there was the norm.

I liked Cairo, but once got malaria there. But that’s another tale…

    Yes, same book/author.

That is an interesting subject and Thubron writes well. He wrote several earlier books on China and the USSR. Takes trains, buses, camels, taxis, hitchhikes, etc. Much like locals. Not flyover travel.

The kind of travel writer (often British) who upon reading you conclude, “boy I’m glad I read that, so I am never tempted to actually try to go there myself.” Nor could or would I.

It seems like that Arab community is about only 25% as murderous as the black “community” here – near a factor of 100 in these absolute numbers, with Israeli’s Arab population being ~ 1/25 of America’ black population.

I’m not surprised at that number, I.J. It’s just that the Israelis are complaining about this murderous group in their country, yet I think most of them would still deride White Americans as racist for being the least bit concerned with matters 4 times as serious here.

They may have found a solution in the Congo. (Belgian, not French.)

Arab governments are great at winning guerrilla wars. They just wipe out the civilians who underpin guerrilla efforts. Gaddafi was about to eliminate the Libyan rebels when Uncle Sam jumped in and took out his armor and air units. Assad was about to fall to a similar US intervention when the Russians jumped in, thereby deterring further US efforts and warding off a similar fate for him.

The US is great at winning conventional wars. In their conventional phases, Gulf Wars I and II were not simply tours de force, they were unprecedented in the history of modern arms. The problem is that guerrilla wars can't be resolved quickly in a favorable manner without a combination of brutality and ruthlessness alien to current day Western armies. A century ago, American pols were more resolute in their quest for a rapid and victorious outcome:

I’m pretty pissed at Steve right now. I just read an article in USA Today that totally opened my eyes to the REAL problems!

    ***
Black victims remain underrepresented in U.S. news broadcasts, and as a consequence, they’re rarely recognized socially as crime victims deserving of justice or empathy.

  117. @Rob

Not even confident I got 120 - 60 right. It took that long for a prog who is familiar with the research to risk sticking her neck out. The left is not a monolith. It is a bunch of laypeople, donors, and activists.

Things you can't talk about become things you can’t repair. Wonder if anyone has a nationally representative sample of black and white HS seniors' GPAs.

You’re giving Steve a big head. So if he shut his yap we could maybe discuss how to go about having nice things again? That’s some nice magical thinking.

In reality the only thing that would clarify the minds of our rulers is bearing the costs of there actions. Steve banging on about citizenism or genetics or whatever has zero effect on them.

Who invented the circulation of the blood?

Were there any sub Saharan Africans in Judaea c BC/AD? That was before the Arabs began importing African slaves to the region. A few Nubians made their way there, maybe?

Black Jesus/ black Athena cope is always pathetic and a little sad.

Washington D.C. was built where it is precisely because the location was miserable.

Right - the fact that it is 10 miles from George Washington's house was a pure coincidence. This is like big corporations that engage expensive consultants to determine what city their HQ should be in and just by coincidence the study determines that the best location for corporate HQ is the city where the CEO wants to live.

That being said, DC WAS miserable in the summer in the days before air conditioning.

There were people who wanted to make G.Washington our king. He refused, and IIRC, was offended. How many of today’s prostitions would turn something like that down?

I clicked your link and you're right of course. I did meet one of those guys actually and we discussed army service, but that was in the 90s. The first black Israelite enlisted in 2004. My impression was that a good number of these fellas were pulling what alcoholics call a 'geographical:' In their case changing locations to get away from a life of crime or a life as a criminal snitch.

I assumed the guys in your photos were Falashas because they look weedy for Chicago blacks. That's probably because they're vegetarians. They also are allowed to wear cloth shoes in the army due to their particular beliefs, etc You should also note that the Black Hebrews are not conscripts, they are volunteers.

Like any normal country, Israel can revoke naturalized citizenship due to fraud or bad behavior. Israel does not have jus soli citizenship. But almost all of those deported are illegal aliens.

The part that gets me is "nothing is known about how it works, or its long-term effects."

That strikes me as pretty strong a claim to ignorance from a purported expert. It sounds more like a guy who doesn't really have much knowledge trying to justify his job. Maybe someone feels the need to whip up some political "law and order" momentum in the Congo?

I can't help thinking of the Jenkem hysteria. It's a very similar kind of story, from the same part of the world.

It's possible it's a "monkey see monkey do" situation. Somebody heard that people were stealing catalytic converters, and they were unable to grasp the real reasons -- so they assumed there was some kind of drug to be made from the mysterious stuff inside. Somebody cooked something up and they got a placebo effect, or just a good old carbon monoxide/dioxide reaction.

This doesn’t surprise me in the least. They used to mix heroin, cocaine, and gun powder and have their child soldiers snort it to give them a feeling of calm invincibility before battles.

Then you have home made moonshine like Changaa: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changaa#:~:text=Changaa%20or%20Chang’aa%20is,sorghum%2C%20and%20is%20very%20potent.

“Changaa or Chang’aa is a traditional home-brewed spirit, popular in Kenya. It is made by fermentation and distillation from grains like millet, maize and sorghum, and is very potent.”

“The drink is sometimes adulterated by adding substances like jet fuel, embalming fluid or battery acid, which has the effect of giving the beverage more ‘kick’.[4][5] Drinkers have suffered blindness or death due to methanol poisoning.[3] The water used to make the drink in illegal breweries is also often below acceptable health standards and sometimes contaminated with sewage.”
