From CNN:

Governor’s painful gaffe on Charlottesville
By Johnita P. Due
Updated 8:12 AM ET, Tue August 15, 2017

Johnita Due: Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe was mistaken to refer to Thomas Jefferson in such adoring terms. Jefferson, like many Founding Fathers, played a role in seeding white supremacy in this country, writes Due

Johnita P. Due is vice president and assistant general counsel for CNN. The opinions expressed in this commentary are hers.

(CNN) “I have a message to all the white supremacists and the Nazis who came into Charlottesville today. Our message is plain and simple: Go home,” said Governor Terry McAuliffe. “You are not wanted in this great Commonwealth. … You pretend that you are patriots, but you are anything but a patriot.”

McAuliffe was saying many of the things we needed to hear, and the black man standing behind him in the white “Menace II Supremacy” shirt was nodding emphatically.

“You want to talk about patriots, talk about Thomas Jefferson and George Washington who brought our country together,” he added. The man in the t-shirt, who I later learned was Charlottesville Vice Mayor Wes Bellamy, stopped nodding

About 0:24 in the video above.

, maybe coincidentally, but I felt punched in the stomach.

At a time when it is important to condemn white nationalists and supremacists unequivocally, invoking Thomas Jefferson is a mistake.

Blow them up? Or would it be racist to leave them standing and just rename them after, say, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton?

  1. Some sympathy here for the pro-Trump black ladies of YouTube, ‘Diamond & Silk’, an entertaining, distinctively USA pair of women, who have just been hit with censorship de-monetisation by the GoogleTube gang

Showing that even if you are the ‘right category’ personally, that won’t help you if you are not 100% on board with the approved ideological programme

Unfortunately, a lot of people who should know better are talking about lawsuits against gargantuan corporations like Google and YouTube as public utilities and therefore under first amendment obligations.

It is the height of folly to make the government the arbiter of free speech and its guarantor. That gives government the right to regulate speech, or its absence. It's quite obvious that by government sticking its nose into communications, makes rebel media more expensive and time-consuming. The shoestring operation will increasingly have to justify itself via expensive attorneys, logs, and evidence of impartiality. This reduces competition, centralizes communications channels, and makes all broadcasting more profitable and more subject to government whims.

So, the choice is the quick fix of a government intervention or the protection of alternative news sources, even if they are struggling for existence., You can't have both. They're mutually exclusive.

We see the abuses of YouTube, Twitter, Google first hand. They are using their market share to stifle free speech and political opinions that they don't agree with. But, in six months, give or take, the cultural majority of the country, which actually provides the bulk of business, will find alternative means of receiving information. This can only occur if smaller upstarts are not harassed or regulated. Sooner or later, the giant networks of Facebook, Google and Twitter will become huge money-losers, like Target with its decisions to impose trans-gender bathrooms.

But, like diamonds, regulation is forever. Once we give in to the temptation to put government in a positive role of dictator of communications, rather than adhering to its actual mandate which is to stay out altogether, we have forged the chains of our own enslavement.

  4. This is a runaway train we are on right now. The traitorous GOP in Congress has openly glorified communist violence. If peaceful revolution is blocked, violent revolution is inevitable (a famous liberal once said this).

The left believed it was “this” close to wiping out the Real America with an H. Clinton regime. If they retake Congress in 2018, we are headed for war. If the right gets 60 Senators in 2018, we must implement mass deportations, a total immigration moratorium, and the defunding of all institutions of Cultural Marxism.

    Impossible.

The Republican Party may get to 60, but we all know how different that is.

Trump should have done better building a movement, starting right after the election, of down-ballot candidates to run in 2018 and 2020. He should have his own fundraising and strategy infrastructure. Sort of a party-within-a-party. (He missed the opportunity with Mo Brooks, who failed to make the run-off for the AL Senate seat.) He needs a handful of members of Congress and governors who are loyal to and ideologically aligned with him.

    @Anon

You are absolutely correct on the connection between gay marriage and tearing down Confederate memorials. The big lie of gay marriage was forced down our throats by mass media, which was able to move its approval numbers upward after years of carpet bombing American minds. Just think that when Obama came in he said the only marriage is between a man and a woman. While his last two years he promoted gay marriage. Partly due to childless gays having lots of disposable to contribute to Democrats.
Eliminating this boundary that has been around 5000+ years softened up Americans enough to tolerate destruction of Confederate memorials by a loud minority of blacks and lefties. To the point where anyone who points out that the antifas and BLM are partly to blame for Chancellorsville will be whaled on by the media, see Donald Trump. My actual take is that antifas and BLM are 90% responsible, with Gov Terry McAuliffe and Charlottesville mayor and vice mayor too, who manipulated permitting for the march and who cynically ordered 1000 police and LEOs to not lift a finger.

We all know how Theodore Dalrymple put it:
“In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is...in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”

Theodore Dalrymple said this in 2005 and here is the original source http://archive.frontpagemag.com/readArticle.aspx?ARTID=7445

Maybe they can keep the name Washington and just decide that it was named after Booker T. Washington instead of George. Of course it would require a changed state flag, but at least most of the state letterhead and signs could remain the same.

This is actually what they did in King County, Washington. From wiki:

The county was originally named after William Rufus King who was Vice President when the Washington Territory was created in 1853. In 1986, a motion was introduced to change the namesake to Martin Luther King Jr.[3] No public votes or hearings were taken on the change.[4]

Spot on. The faster the better, though. Slippery slope arguments are much easier to make when the slope is slippier. It's one thing to say 'A will lead to B' when B doesn't happen until 10 years later. It's another thing to say it when the left is already moving on to B when they haven't even fully accomplished A. In other news, Baltimore tore down four Confederate monuments last night. They needed the space to put up monuments for the war currently happening in their streets. Their murder rate is almost double (up 80%) what it was three years ago.

The neat thing is that we're making the argument (against removal of Jefferson in spite of owning slaves) which they deny vehemently today but which they will use in the next Current Year without reservation or acknowledgement of their past position (Jefferson owned slaves, just like Lee! Strike his name from the scrolls and obelisks!).

"White Supremacy" is code for resenting/being humiliated by white achievement. It can't end any other way than by tearing it all down.

  25. Since this is one of the few places where I can ask a rational question…

Were the only people who protested the removal of the Lee statue actual card-carrying KKK members and and Neo-Nazis, or were there a variety of groups with different perspectives who support leaving America’s cultural history alone?

This is a question about fact.

What I see is the media saying “the KKK and actual Nazis are the same as white supremacists are the same as the alt-right is the same as Donald Trump voters. Trump needs to confirm that Democrats are the wholesome moral center of America.”

It’s a clever strategy. The only way you can watch the mainstream news without feeling anxiety is to be a card-carrying Democrat. Or a hard Leftist.

I suppose we could work this strategy from the other side. Point out the Antifa, who wear scary masks, carry tear gas and clubs, and incite violence rather than peaceful protest. Antifa is the same as BLM is the same as alt-left is the same as Democrat. Democrats are therefore hate-mongers who reject America’s tradition of peaceful protest and acceptance of alternative political views.”

This has to be worked out, because the Left has hundreds of statues left to go. This will be repeated every weekend leading up to the midterm elections.

The neat thing is that we’re making the argument (against removal of Jefferson in spite of owning slaves) which they deny vehemently today but which they will use in the next Current Year without reservation or acknowledgement of their past position (Jefferson owned slaves, just like Lee! 37. I would think Lincoln’s would be the most vulnerable Memorial on the Mall. I know of no statement on the races by Washington or Jefferson more succinct and to the point than this:

I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races, — that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.

There’s a basic question about the Colonization Society that Lincoln favored that I’ve never seen adequately answered: was the repatriation to be, in all cases, voluntary? A basic distinction between Northerners and Southerners of the time was that the latter were comfortable with the presence of Blacks in their fields, kitchens and nurseries, while Northerners viewed their presence with abhorrence. Lincoln’s own state of Illinois banned free slaves, and Lincoln obviously imbibed the Northern attitudes. I have to wonder – was Lincoln’s opposition to slavery in part due to the fact that the slaves’ economic value as slaves posed an obstacle to shipping them all out of the country?
Next on the agenda: stigmatize the name of Darwin and purge it from civilized discourse, for reasons that should be obvious by now. His books certainly shouldn’t be allowed in school libraries. Imagine the potential lawsuits on behalf of triggered and traumatized students.

When the Justice Department announced its investigation into Harvard’s possible racial discrimination against Asians, almost on cue the usual suspects came forth with all-too familiar rhetoric on affirmation action. For liberals it was all about keeping our cherished diversity or helping the disadvantaged; conservatives meanwhile lectured on merit-based admissions or how preferences will stigmatize beneficiaries of preferential treatment. And on and on. Without exception, regardless of the speaker’s ideology, everything offered was the usual pabulum and, no doubt, the speeches will be resurrected again given that racial preferences are unlikely to vanish.

There is, however, one argument justifying putting a heavy thumb on the scale for blacks that is unspeakable, at least publicly. I’ll call it an impolite conservative argument, conservative in the sense of preserving a relatively tranquil status quo and impolite insofar as it acknowledges an uncomfortable race-related truth.

The argument is that admitting academically unqualified blacks to elite schools is, at core, a policy to protect the racial peace and, as such, has nothing to do with racial justice, the putative benefits of diversity or any other standard justification. It is this peace- keeping function that explains why the entire establishment, from mega corporations to the military, endorses constitutionally iffy racial discrimination and why questioning diversity’s benefits is the most grievous of all PC sins. Stated in cost-benefit terms, denying a few hundred (even a few thousand) high-SAT scoring Asians an Ivy League diploma and instead forcing them attend Penn State is a cheap price to pay for social peace.

This argument rests on an indisputable reality that nearly all societies contain distinct ethnic or religious groups who must be managed for the sake of collective peace. They typically lack the ability to economically compete, may embrace values that contravene the dominant ethos, or otherwise just refuse to assimilate. What makes management imperative is the possibility of violence either at an individual level, for example, randomly stabbing total strangers, or on a larger scale, riots and insurrections. Thus, in the grand scheme of modern America’s potentially explosive race relations, academically accomplished Asians, most of whom are politically quiescent, are expendable, collateral damage in the battle to sustain a shaky status quo.

Examples of such to-be-managed groups abound. Recall our own tribulations with violent Indian tribes well into the 19th century or what several European nations currently face with Muslims or today’s civil war in Burma with the Karen People. Then there’s Turkey’s enduring conflict with the Kurds and long before the threat of Islamic terrorism, there were Basque separatists (the ETA), and the Irish Republican Army. In the past 45 years, there have been more than 16,000 terror attacks in Western Europe according to the Global Terrorism Database. At a lower levels add the persistently criminal Gypsies who for 500 years have resisted all efforts to assimilate them. This listing is, of course, only a tiny sampling of distinct indigestible violence-prone groups.

The repertoire of remedies, successful and failed, is also extensive. Our native-American problem has, sad to say, been largely solved by the use of apartheid-like reservations and incapacitating a once war-like people with drugs and alcohol. Elsewhere generous self-rule has done the trick, for example, the Basques in Spain. A particularly effective traditional solution is to promote passivity by encouraging religious acceptance of one’s lowly state.

Now to the question at hand: what is to be done regarding American blacks, a group notable for its penchant for violence whose economic advancement over the last half-century has largely stalled despite tens of billions and countless government uplift programs.

To appreciate the value of affirmative action recall the urban riots of the 1960s. They have almost been forgotten but their sheer number during that decade would shock those grown accustomed to today’s relative tranquility. A sampling of cities with major riots includes Rochester, NY, New York City, Philadelphia, PA, Los Angeles, CA, Cleveland, OH, Newark, NJ, Detroit, MI, Chicago, IL, Washington, DC and several smaller cities.

The damage from these riots— “uprisings” or “rebellions” according to some—was immense. For example, the Detroit riot of 1967 lasted five days and quelling it required the intervention of the Michigan Army National Guard and both the 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions. When it finally ended, the death toll was 43, some 7200 were arrested and more than 2000 buildings destroyed. Alas, much of this devastation remains visible today and should be a reminder of what could happen absent a policy of cooling out black anger.

To correctly understand how racial preferences at elite colleges serves as a cost-effective solution to potential domestic violence, recall the quip by comedian Henny Youngman when asked “How’s your wife?” He responded with, “Compared to what?” This logic reflects a hard truth: when confronting a sizable, potentially disruptive population unable or unwilling to assimilate, a perfect solution is beyond reach. Choices are only among the lesser of evils and, to repeat, under current conditions, race-driven affirmative action is conceivably the best of the worst. A hard-headed realist would draw a parallel with how big city merchants survive by paying off the police, building and food inspectors, and the Mafia. Racial preferences are just one more item on the cost-of-doing business list–the Danegeld.

In effect, racial preferences in elite higher education (and beneficiaries includes students, professors and the diversity-managing administrators) separates the top 10% measured in cognitive ability from their more violent down market racial compatriots. While this manufactured caste-like arrangement hardly guarantees racial peace (as the black-on-white crime rate, demonstrates) but it pretty much dampens the possibility of more collective, well-organized related upheavals, the types of disturbances that truly terrify the white establishment. Better to have the handsomely paid Cornel West pontificating about white racism at Princeton where he is a full professor than fulminating at some Ghetto street corner. This status driven divide just reflects human nature. Why would a black Yalie on Wall Street socialize with the bro’s left behind in the Hood? This is the strategy of preventing a large-scale, organized rebellion by decapitating its potential leadership. Violence is now just Chicago or Baltimore-style gang-banger intra-racial mayhem or various lone-wolf criminal attacks on whites.

Co-optation is a staple in the political management repertoire. The Soviet Union adsorbed what they called the “leading edge” into the Party (anyone exceptionally accomplished, from chess grandmasters or world-class athletes) to widen the divide the dominant elite, i.e., the Party, and hoi polloi. Election systems can be organized to guarantee a modicum of power to a handful of potential disruptors and with this position comes ample material benefits (think Maxine Waters). Monarchies have similarly managed potential strife by bestowing honors and titles on commoners. It is no accident that many radicals are routinely accused of “selling out” by their former colleagues in arms. In most instances the accusation is true, and this is by design.

To appreciate the advantages of the racial preferences in higher education consider Henny’s “compared to what”? part of his quip. Certainly what successfully worked for quelling potential Native American violence, e.g., forced assimilation in “Indian Schools” or confinement in pathology-breeding reservations, is now totally beyond the pale though, to be sure, some inner-cities dominated by public housing are increasingly coming to resemble pathology-inducing Indian reservations. Even less feasible is some legally mandated homeland of the types advocated by Black Muslims.

I haven’t done the math but I would guess that the entire educational racial spoils system is far more cost effective than creating a garrison state or a DDR-like police state where thousands of black trouble-makers were quickly incarcerated. Perhaps affirmative action in general should be viewed as akin to a nuisance tax, probably less than 5% of our GDP.

To be sure, affirmative action at elite universities is only one of today’s nostrums to quell potential large scale race-related violence. Other tactics include guaranteeing blacks elected offices, even if this requires turning a blind eye toward election fraud, and quickly surrendering to blacks who demand awards and honors on the basis of skin color. Perhaps a generous welfare system could be added to this keep-the-peace list. Nevertheless, when all added up, the costs would be far lowers than dealing with widespread 1960s style urban violence.

This peace-keeping aspect of affirmative action understood, perhaps we ought to view those smart Asians unfairly rejected from Ivy League schools as sacrificial lambs. Now, given all the billions that have been saved, maybe a totally free ride at lesser schools would be a small price to pay for their dissatisfaction (and they would also be academic stars at such schools). Of course this “Asian only” compensatory scholarship might be illegal under the color blind requirements of 1964 Civil Right Act, but fear not, devious admission officers will figure out a way around the law

I might not put it that cynically, but that is pretty much my understanding of the reality of AA. I am OK with the Social Justice justification. Where do you suppose the slogan, "No Justice, no Peace", comes from -- from racists?

But you cannot even support AA on a college campus on the basis of Social Justice; you have to support it as an intrinsic good, and if you don't, the Thought Police will stuff you into Room 101 at the Ministry of Love with a rat cage over your head.

But that brings up another problem. If it is really about Social Justice but people at the U correct you, "Oh no, it is about Diversity, it is about making all members of the academic community and the society it serves better off." This is a Socialist's Big Lie, and lies undermine academic integrity as much as cheating for a better grade or making stuff up to publish papers or shading the interpretation of data to curry favor with funding sources. The lie part of this is much more corrosive than any putative relaxation of academic standards to get AA to work.

All societies have certain organizing principles. Freedom of speech is not a first-order good; it exists only to facilitate the flourishing of the society along the lines established by those principles. In America today one of those principles is that discrimination based on race is immoral; people who disagree with this have only one goal — creating a society in which it is not one of those principles. If we do not want to allow this to happen, we should not permit anyone to argue in favor of it.

Since this is one of the few places where I can ask a rational question...

Were the only people who protested the removal of the Lee statue actual card-carrying KKK members and and Neo-Nazis, or were there a variety of groups with different perspectives who support leaving America's cultural history alone?

This is a question about fact.

What I see is the media saying "the KKK and actual Nazis are the same as white supremacists are the same as the alt-right is the same as Donald Trump voters. Trump needs to confirm that Democrats are the wholesome moral center of America."

It's a clever strategy.

Democrats are therefore hate-mongers who reject America's tradition of peaceful protest and acceptance of alternative political views."

This has to be worked out, because the Left has hundreds of statues left to go. This will be repeated every weekend leading up to the midterm elections.

To assent to obvious lies is…in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”

Get over it bitch -- this is America. Where btw there are far more positives for you than negatives. Obviously.

What is your take on this Steve?

I think that Asians are going to be less willing to be sacrificed to lower IQ Blacks. This may lead to a more politically activist Asian community?

Sacrificing Smart Asians to Keep the Racial Peace

Where do you suppose the slogan, “No Justice, no Peace”, comes from — from racists?

But you cannot even support AA on a college campus on the basis of Social Justice; you have to support it as an intrinsic good, and if you don’t, the Thought Police will stuff you into Room 101 at the Ministry of Love with a rat cage over your head.

But that brings up another problem. If it is really about Social Justice but people at the U correct you, “Oh no, it is about Diversity, it is about making all members of the academic community and the society it serves better off.” This is a Socialist’s Big Lie, and lies undermine academic integrity as much as cheating for a better grade or making stuff up to publish papers or shading the interpretation of data to curry favor with funding sources. The lie part of this is much more corrosive than any putative relaxation of academic standards to get AA to work.

Given the right-onness of Seattle, shouldn’t the lefties there be pressing for their state to change its name?

Maybe they can keep the name Washington and just decide that it was named after Booker T. Washington instead of George. Of course it would require a changed state flag, but at least most of the state letterhead and signs could remain the same.

This is actually what they did in King County, Washington. From wiki:

The county was originally named after William Rufus King who was Vice President when the Washington Territory was created in 1853. In 1986, a motion was introduced to change the namesake to Martin Luther King Jr.[3] No public votes or hearings were taken on the change.[4]

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe is a baby boomer scumbag who lied about the anti-White violence that happened at a pro-free speech event in Virginia. McAuliffe should be removed from office and sent to prison for his role in the Charlottesville riot. McAuliffe did everything in his power to give license to the anti-free speech thugs who attacked decent Americans who only wanted to defend the honor of Robert E. Lee and promote free speech.

This baby boomer dirtbag McAuliffe is well known as a foul rat who scurried around the globe grabbing money for the Clinton Organized Crime Family. McAuliffe is the villain in all the events that transpired in Virginia. Attorney General Jeff Sessions should open up a broad investigation into the evil activities of McAuliffe in Virginia.
