Los Angeles mayoral candidate Rick Caruso declares he’s not white because he’s Italian
The billionaire added his Italian American heritage makes him “Latin,” sparking a social media uproar.

By David K. LiLos Angeles mayoral candidate Rick Caruso insisted he’s not white but really Italian — and thus “Latin” — in an awkward debate moment Tuesday in the country’s second-largest city.
Caruso, a billionaire real estate developer, faces U.S. Rep. Karen Bass, a Democrat seeking to become the city’s first Black female mayor.
Los Angeles has had a black mayor for 20 of the last 49 years (Tom Bradley, 1973-1993), despite blacks never being over 20% of the population.
Next month’s election comes in the wake of former City Council President Nury Martinez’s resignation from her council seat Wednesday after an audio recording of her making racist remarks surfaced.
In bringing up the scandal, Telemundo anchor Dunia Elvir said: “The next mayor of Los Angeles will be either an African American woman or a white man.”
“I’m Italian,” Caruso interjected.
Elvir responded, “Italian American,” as Caruso insisted that his racial identification be stated on his terms.
“That’s ‘Latin,’ thank you,” Caruso said.
Judging from the soundtrack that’s been playing nonstop for the last 20 years at L.A. mayoral candidate Rick Caruso’s Grove shopping mall — pretty much nonstop Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Dean Martin, and Tony Bennett — Caruso is a Very Italian.

If his Italian ancestors are from south of Rome, there are a lot of northern Italians who are probably inclined to agree that he’s not white. There’s an Italian saying that Garibaldi didn’t unite Italy, he divided Africa.
Now, here in the US we southern Italians are regarded as Honorary Whites and always have been so, therefore I go with that and regard myself as White. I have copies of my ancestor’s immigration documentation and green cards, some of them going back 100 years, and everyone was officially labeled by US authorities as White, which is good enough for me, even though I look like Sirhan Sirhan after he has spent time sunning himself in the prison yard. And everyone has always treated me as White. Except for my wife. Reminds me of a story I heard from a British WW2 veteran involved in fighting the long, arduous slog of a campaign up the Italian peninsula.

I am compelled to spend time in Los Angeles every few months. I thank god for the RTKs (Roof Top Koreans). Just knowing the little guys are monitoring the situation from the roof tops allows me to navigate The Beast (LA) with a little more confidence. Like all white men, I lost my balls some time ago. The idea that there is a huge genetic gulf separating soi-disant "Germanic" North Italians from "African" South Italians/Sicilians (often by self-interested North Italians) is rubbish. While there are outliers, Italians from any part of the country are largely a Mediterranean people in genotype and phenotype. North Italians like Mussolini, Berlusconi, Salvini do not look especially "Nordic" compared to Sicilian-Sardinian Giorgia Meloni.
To the extent there is "Nordic" admixture in Italy, it does not follow a simple linear North-South gradient. South Italy/Sicily of the Middle Ages saw Germanic armies march all over e.g. Lombard Kingdom of Italy armies of Langobards and their Norman mercenaries fighting Byzantine Catepanate of Italy armies of Varangians (Norse and Anglo-Saxon mercenaries in service of Constantinople) e.g. 1018 Battle of Cannæ (where Varangian Guard defeated Lombards/Normans–of course the latter would come back to win in the long run).

The funny thing about the uproar is that Italians and Hispanics actually get along pretty well; Italians are ‘Latin.’ For all I know, dude is genuinely comfortable shooting the shit with his gardener.

I have a mixed ethnic background, but thanks to my southern Italian ancestors I get pretty dark if I spend a consistent amount of time in the sun. Some years ago I had a job where I was outside all the time and in a majority black neighborhood, and obviously the residents got to know me over time. One day a group was watching me while I was going about my work and finally a couple women walked over and wanted to know about my racial background because apparently it was a subject of recent debate amongst some of them as to whether I was 100% white.
