Here’s my first 4,000 word column in Taki’s Magazine. I went into detail because I’ve finally devised a reasonably objective methodology for answering February’s important national question: Are hate crime stories in the national press more likely to be Fair or Fake?

The 21 Club
by Steve Sailer

February 27, 2019

When the national press trumpets its tales of white hate crimes, are the underlying realities more likely to turn out to be genuine examples of white racist criminality, Jussie Smollett-like hate hoaxes, or something in between?

I’ve finally come up with a fair methodology for answering this question that’s at the heart of the National Conversation we are finally having on just how honest is the purported White Terror we’ve been hearing about since 2016. …

But what percentage of these press allegations have since been validated?

The methodological issue is, how do we keep advocates from memory-holing contrary data?

My solution is to use The New York Times’ own “This Week in Hate” columns. I let the pinnacle of Establishment respectability take their best shot, curating their own list of hate crimes from across the country. I then evaluate how The New York Times did. …

The contents of “This Week in Hate” were chosen to make it appear that pro-Trump whites were running amok.

With the advantage of hindsight, how well did the NYT do at its self-assigned task?

For the purposes of this essay, I analyzed all 21 incidents in the second (12/6/16) and third (12/13/16) weeks of “This Week in Hate,” looking for pro and con evidence that has accumulated in the 26 months since on the validity of the NYT’s accounts. …

How many of the 21 incidents have resulted in hate-crime convictions? How many have been shown to be a complete hoax? How many are unconfirmed by the justice system but seem plausible? How many unconfirmed occurrences are dubious?

I shall count through the 21 cases rank-ordered from the most valid to the most embarrassing for the NYT.

Read the whole thing there.

iSteve commenter Brobert adds:

Big takeaway from your piece is that not only does the demand for hate crimes exceeds the supply, it appears there is not even enough hate hoaxes to fill the gap. The NYT was reduced to “reporting” on bathroom stall graffiti and blackboard scrawlings in middle school classrooms.

No wonder Smollett was reduced to hiring Nigerians, there’s just not enough enterprising American hate hoaxers.

Brazilians are generally visa overstayers, not border crossers or document forgers. And sure enough, she overstayed her visa in … 1994, about a quarter century ago. She’s 41, so that means she was about 16 or 17 when she overstayed. Props for not being deported yet, but the self-own-goal double play was unfortunate: coming to ICE attention as an illegal due to a criminal act, which puts her into the highest deportation category.

On the other hand, criminal and long-term illegal Ravi Ragbir is still chilling out in New York.

If deported she’ll have to brush up on recent Brazilian Portuguese slang. A common problem for returnees who came when young is that they never learned the “business” or “hospitality” or “customer facing” versions of their native language. They are completely fluent, but they come off as brusque or rude. That limits job possibilities. On the other hand, they speak English.

This is true in Japan, and many returnees (who were partly educated abroad when the father’s job took him to an overseas office) end up in the American School through high school and have to cram on the more formal Japanese ways of speaking. On the other hand, their English is way above standard for Japanese, and there are a very high percentage of returnee women working in newscasting and television hosting jobs.

I think something that Trump could do if he ever decided to kick out the DACAs is to offer aid to Mexico and other countries to set up international schools to accommodate kids without business Spanish ability, or even adult training facilities. Broadcasters, flight attendants, hotel management students, and many others are trained in more formal ways of speaking than they acquired naturally, so it’s possible. Even if this would be completely unused by the sort of trash immigrants we have as illegals, it would nullify a talking point of deportation opponents. You sometimes hear that some illegals “can’t speak Spanish,” which is bullshit. They can’t speak business Spanish. They are either native speakers from Spanish speaking countries, or they were children raised by an illegal Spanish speaking mother who speak some form of Spanish natively in the home.

    “can’t speak Spanish,”

I don't know about the other parts of the country, but here in Texas, it's a common compliment to say that someone speaks 'good Spanish,' even Mexicans and Central Americans.

I think the other commenter was right that even most Americans don't speak good English, but theirs is good enough so that's it's not a detriment to getting at least a low-level white collar job, i.e. as a bank teller.
    , @Autochthon
    @Anon

There are people like thise you describe, who speak bastardised Spanish just as many idiots speak bastardised English, but there are indeed also truly many who cannot speak Spanish at all (save maybe aome very basic phrases) – these are the indios who speak some crazy Amerindian language no one more than fifty miles from their pueblo has ever heard of. Its a very real phenomenon. As a fluent speaker of (actual) Spanish who's spent time in Texas, Florida, and Mexinchifornia, I have encountered many of these creatures firsthand.

These would be like iliterate Amerindians in the F.U.S.A. if they'd never left the reservation and hardly been exposed to television or radio, so they only spoke Navajo or Cherokee or some damned thing. You don't really encounter that here and the analogy fails because even the most depressing, isolated reservations have electricity and basic schooling in English available – not so in parts of Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, etc.

Note also that mestizos love live love to be surly bastards and clam up, often feigning not to understand a language, even when they do; it's a cultural thing with them, their way of insulting and avoiding conflict or blame while trying to also retain deniability and innocence. It's very bastardly behaviour.

  3. Nice work! Can’t have been too fun to slog through. It’s not even very fun to read. But it’s really nice to make the news accountable in this way. Exemplary. Perhaps others can follow, and perhaps there can be some way of automating this tedious manual labor…

  6. In today’s atmosphere I would suppose that any killing of a black by a white would be a hate crime. So wouldn’t it be true that a killing of a white by a black would be a hate crime? Same for rape. Isn’t it time to review the FBI statistics and convert to per capita rates? I’m sure that will show vastly greater hate crimes per capita by blacks. Might as well fold in the Asian and Hispanic data also.

  7. Anon[849] • Disclaimer says:

perhaps there can be some way of automating this tedious manual labor…

Nothing lends itself LESS to automation than this type of qualitative data analysis involving multifactorial human judgement. Even in 1000 years this could never be automated. Steve’s analysis is basically common sense judgement based on weighing all the evidence, which is the best you can hope for with this type of qualitative data.

BUT LET’S JUST AUTOMATE IT THO

No kidding. Make people put their money where their mouth is, and clean up for a while until they get tired of losing money. All the bettors would then presumably shut up. But being able to list the odds, and, taunting people to bet, would both be effective weapons.
  9. Anonymous[202] • Disclaimer says:

If the alleged perpetrator is white, make and heterosexual, the ‘hate crime’ is always presumed to be true. Of course, it goes without saying that likewise the accuser is either non white, female or gay.

If the accuser is white, male and heterosexual, the normal rules of skepticism/indifference apply.

All reminds me of religious cults and the phenomenon of ‘miracles’, ie the believe what they want to believe, and base their reality around it.

  10. For the Times to be right on merely a simple majority (11 of 21) of its handpicked stories of white Trump criminality, four of the seven unlikely incidents would have to turn out to be true.

Well, explains why the column stopped in 2017. I doubt the results of this column are a surprise to the NYT editors, though; in all likelihood, the NYT reporters did the exact same investigative work on all these hate crime stories and came to the same conclusion.

Difference is, their follow-up reporting will never see the light of day—that just wouldn’t be narrative fit to print.

  11. That was a fine coda, Mr iSteve.

  12. I appreciate all the work, Mr. Sailer. Another point should be made, if I might: Many of these incidents involve graffiti. How many incidents of graffiti are there in the U.S. every day (or week or month)? Who does most of this graffiti? Of all the words and messages written on public walls, how many of them, what percentage of them, involve “hate” as defined by the SPLC and NYT? Is it really believable that in the periods covered by the NYT’s hate feature, there were no anti-white words or messages scrawled on public walls in all of the United States? Is it at all conceivable that no graffiti “artist” wrote “Fuck Trump” somewhere or other? I will sympathize with anyone who is terrorized by a true threat, but otherwise every effort must be made to show the NYT’s propaganda for what it is.

  13. The number of hate crimes is much, much higher than the Times’ number.

  14. Anon[331] • Disclaimer says:

Great article, I appreciate the effort!

The Times won’t follow up on their own stuff. They should be responsible enough to correct the misperceptions their reporting causes. I noticed in real time how they started to have second thoughts about their project. I think that they originally envisioned it as something like the WaPo’s police shooting database or the LA Times neighborhood crime database. But it went off the narrative rails, and probably rewired too much follow-up to really be authoritative.

But they keep a close eye on Emmett Till breaking news.

  15. You know and I know that the NYT is referring misleadingly to the horrific Chicago torture video of four blacks tormenting a retarded white for racist reasons.

The four blacks all got slap on the hand punishments, because Chicago.

Speaking of Chicago, I saw this afternoon that the two people who made the Chicago Mayor election runoff yesterday are both black women. That made me think of something: Chicago is one-third Latino, yet the top finishing Latino sounding name finished in fifth place with 9%. It’s almost as if one of the real subversive political purposes of mass Latino immigration is that certain ambitious political groups want to import and establish in certain places the political equivalent of a buffer state (alluding to your Korean War post today).

    Italics mine.

The lead photo shows a punch landing solidly in the guy’s face. But who knows, maybe Turning Point USA is paying thugs $3,500 to slug them for reals, and the whole thing is thus an “allegedly” hoax.

The cops have a name (unreleased) and an arrest warrant (not yet taken into custody), in addiiton to the punch video from different angles, with audio. But still allegedly.

Somehow I think the “allegedly” will disappear the minute they think they have something that follows their narrative.

Alarm, For those who did not see the comment posted last week, I wish I could credit the poster, but from the Onion: "Ask murderer terrorizes black neighborhood."

  20. Steve, your exemplary analysis examines “hate crimes” to determine how much actual hate was involved, but there is also the question about the other half of the “hate crime” category name: how much crime was involved?

Many of the events dubiously listed as “hate crimes” may involve hate, but they don’t—or may not—involve crime.

Example: the 21 Club‘s second most plausible case wherein a man (allegedly) shoved a Muslim cop’s son. Even taking the complainants at their word, there does not appear to be any actual underlying crime in this “hate crime”. The allegation is that the man said “go back” (not a crime), shoved the son (maybe assault), and told the dog to “sic ’em” (the dog didn’t, so no crime). Usually an assault has to result in some harm to the victim, but here no harm is alleged, so was there really a crime? And since the shoving may have gone both ways, if it is a crime, how hate-driven was it?

Or consider the third most plausible crime, the Oklahoma pig dumping. No one was injured. The pig was already dead. At most you could say the underlying “crime” was littering, but it is not even clear if that was on public property or the private property, so is it a crime against some Muslims or against the municipality?

Cases 6 and 7 (unpleasant mail) are not crimes. Case 5 (pushed to ground, “treated” for “leg injury”) looks like an attempt to spin a barely crime into something more serious. And case 4 (graffiti) is pretty minor. And so on.

So of the top seven most plausible “hate crimes”, two are not crimes, two may or may not be crimes, two are picayune crimes that probably would never have been reported absent their putative “hate” value, and a grand total of one is a crime of real significance, which itself may really be an “anger” crime transmogrified into a “hate” crime by the perp’s injudiciousness and the media-driven climate of hate-crime-mongering.

Like fairy gold disappearing in the sunlight, the gold standard New York Times‘s headline hate crimes disappear as more sunlight of scrutiny falls upon them.

Roseville police referred the 13 teenagers to the Placer County juvenile system on suspicion of committing a misdemeanor by “terrorizing with hate symbols.” The charge is tied to a California Penal Code section that outlaws using a symbol “for the purpose of terrorizing the owner or occupant” of private property or in “reckless disregard of the risk of terrorizing” a property’s occupant.

I feel completely differently about this. Of course, you don't send an annual payment, but I see nothing wrong with paying illegals to leave. Canada does it. For about $2,000 a head they can get rid of people who would cost them more to deal with through the legal system.

Although I have given up on the idea of getting rid of the 12 or 22 or however million illegals there are in the U.S., because Trump is such a cuck, if we were to do it, we couldn't do it with deportaions. Do the math. Divide the number of illegals by the number of days in a presidential term or two, multiplied by the number of days you'd have to house them during appeals, and throw in the number of agents you'd need, judges, buses and planes. Can't be done.

Self deportation would be the only way, and that would require carrot and stick. Stick would be confiscation of assets, arrest, no job because of eVerify, no access to the financial system (a big thing we should implement; it works and is in place already against U.S. expats, who have trouble getting bank accounts now), reduced access to housing via harrassment of landlords who accept cash rent.

Carrot would be cash payments to get the hell out, assistance with unloading immovable assets like real estate (leave and we'll help you sell it for a fair price, stay and we'll confiscate it to pay costs in getting rid of you), and Nixon-in-China style reversal of various policies like American factories in Mexico and so on. Long term we want them the hell out. Some jobs lost in the U.S. is a good short term compromise. Underwrite job assitance, training, and houseing in countries of origin for a few years.

And pay people to leave. Why not? Do the math here: It's not that expensive. Bio-ID, fingerprints, retinal scan, DNA sample, and then give them some cash and throw them out. If they ever show up again, the clink.

The good part of things like assistance for jobs and cash payments it that it deflates a lot of "oh how cruel!" left talking points. "These are human beings ... and you would ... send them to ... Mexico/Guatamala/El Savador" Oh, the horror!" And it would initiate more cooperation with Mexico, which we need to keep the illegals the hell out.

    @Almost Missouri
Steve, your exemplary analysis examines "hate crimes" to determine how much actual hate was involved, but there is also the question about the other half of the "hate crime" category name: how much crime was involved?

Many of the events dubiously listed as "hate crimes" may involve hate, but they don't—or may not—involve crime.

Example: the 21 Club's second most plausible case wherein a man (allegedly) shoved a Muslim cop's son. Even taking the complainants at their word, there does not appear to be any actual underlying crime in this "hate crime". The allegation is that the man said "go back" (not a crime), shoved the son (maybe assault), and told the dog to "sic 'em" (the dog didn't, so no crime).

At most you could say the underlying "crime" was littering, but it is not even clear if that was on public property or the private property, so is it a crime against some Muslims or against the municipality?

Cases 6 and 7 (unpleasant mail) are not crimes. Case 5 (pushed to ground, "treated" for "leg injury") looks like an attempt to spin a barely crime into something more serious. And case 4 (graffiti) is pretty minor. And so on.

So of the top seven most plausible "hate crimes", two are not crimes, two may or may not be crimes, two are picayune crimes that probably would never have been reported absent their putative "hate" value, and a grand total of one is a crime of real significance, which itself may really be an "anger" crime transmogrified into a "hate" crime by the perp's injudiciousness and the media-driven climate of hate-crime-mongering.

Like fairy gold disappearing in the sunlight, the gold standard New York Times's headline hate crimes disappear as more sunlight of scrutiny falls upon them.

That Mizzou thing was the first thing that came to mind. That prosecutor should be swinging from a tree for indicting on a charge that essentially required him to swear that the State of Missouri is a black person.

  27. NYT:

the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, said that of an estimated 21,000 hate crime cases between 2016 and 2018, fewer than 50 reports were found to be false. The center believes that less than 1 percent of all reported hate crimes are false.

As Mr. McKenna pointed out the in the sub-thread under the “Another Day, Another Hate Hoax” post,

the latest NYT “factoid” joins the “10% of Americans are gay” and “1 in 4 women are raped” and the rest of the BS everyone believes because they “read it somewhere.”

Since we seem to present at the creation of the Left’s new substanceless but unassailable statistic: “less than 1 percent of all reported hate crimes are false!”, I will make a probably futile attempt to head off this new statistical cancer before it metastasizes throughout media system.

The pompously named Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism is really just the office of SPLC alum Brian Levin and his research assistant at a minor league university. So really this is just an SPLC satellite operation with a state subsidy.

This fake “Center” then propounds the existence of

21,000 hate crime cases between 2016 and 2018.

Wow, “cases”! Like legal cases with lawyers, lawsuits, police investigations and so on? Well no. “Cases” just means whatever Hate Crime Impresario Brian Levin says it means. According to Quartz,

Levin … and his team rely on media reports

so media reports = cases = “hate crimes” equal whatever they say they equal. Looking at the Center’s website, they offer no database of the putative 21,000 hate crimes. Indeed, they don’t even seem to have downloaded the FBI’s stats since 2015. You just gotta trust ’em on this one.

    How about

fewer than 50 reports were found to be false

? Who is doing this “finding” of “falsehood”?

That would be our friend Brian Levin again. Since most readers here are aware of thousands of false hate crime reports, how a professional researcher only managed to find “fewer than 50” I’ll leave as an exercise for the reader.

Are there any solid hate crime numbers out there? The legit-sounding FBI Hate Crime Reports are just reports, not crimes, so they are almost as meaningless as Levin’s numbers.

Presumably there is a knowable number of hate crime convictions per year in the US, but no one seems to know what that number is. In two weeks of scouring the nation for “hate”, the NYT managed to find maybe 1 actual convictable crime. So over a year, maybe there are a couple dozen real hate crimes (many of which will be contra-Narrative)? In a country of 330,000,000.

Thus the real comparison of true hate crimes to hoaxes might be a few dozen crimes versus hundreds of hoaxes. So the real hoax ratio is not the Times‘s zombie figure of “less than 1%”. The true hoax ratio is probably a few dozen convictions versus hundreds of hoaxes = most hate crime reports are hoaxes.

NYT: "the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at CSU, San Bernardino, said that of an estimated 21,000 hate crime cases between 2016 and 2018, fewer than 50 reports were found to be false. The center believes that less than 1 percent of all reported hate crimes are false."

Let's take a stab at the CSHE's arithmetic. Three years or 156 weeks "between 2016 and 2018". Better yet, the CSHE's Final Hate Crime Status Report gives "an expected numerical range of between 6,069 to 6,245 reported [to police agencies] hate crimes" for the U.S. in 2016 (PDF page 12). Taking the midpoint, that's a clip of about 120 per week or 240 per two weeks.

"Fewer than 50" false reports 2016-18 works out to 0.7 every two weeks. Less than 1% are false, means 1.2 or fewer per per week (2.4 per two weeks), on average; I'll use this number below.

Sailer "analyzed all 21 incidents in the second (12/6/16) and third (12/13/16) weeks of 'This Week in Hate'." His tally: 2 more or less proved; 5 unproved but more likely than not; 7 unproved and more unlikely than not; 7 disproved.

If I generously give the NYT that all the "more likely than not" and a little under half of the "more unlikely than not" are true, that would give a two week yield of:
2+5+3=10 True or Likely or Possibly True and
    4+7=11 False or Likely False

So of the 240 hate crime cases estimated for those two weeks, the NYT chose 21 (9%) to highlight.
Of the projected 2.4 false reports out of those 240 cases, the NYT found 11.

What are the odds that the NYT would sample 9% of a group, and discover 460% of the false reports within that entire group?

One answer is, of course, "100%". But I doubt that anybody associated with The Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism would get the joke.

I actually heard about one pork-related “hate crime” from the “perpetrator” himself. At the request of some interested students, a teacher at a Catholic high school in the Deep South had asked his principal for permission to start a school-affiliated hunting club. The principal declined, being petrified of potential liability issues in the event of an accident, but the teacher and students just started their own informal club on the side, without using the school’s actual name or implying any official endorsement (and, or course, without telling the principal).

Anyway, after taking a large razorback on one of their trips, they decided it would be cool to roast it for a big football game. The teacher was breaking it down in the school parking lot, before the crowds had arrived, when he remembered he had an urgent obligation and had to leave for a bit.

You can guess what happened next- some adult boosters showed up whilst he was away, saw a decapitated hog carcass in the school parking lot, and immediately phoned the school administrators to alert them that the opposing team’s fans (surely Protestant grandsons of former Klansmen) had perpetrated an anti-Catholic hate crime.

According to his anecdote, told to Sports Illustrated and Barbara Walters and dramatized in the 1998 TV movie The Tiger Woods Story, Woods was a 5-year-old kindergartner in 1981 at Cerritos Elementary School in Anaheim, California, when a group of sixth-graders tied him to a tree, spray-painted the N-word on him and threw rocks at him. Woods said teacher Maureen Decker looked on and “didn’t really do much of anything.” In 2010, Woods’ classmate Richard Romero came forward to insist the incident “never happened.” Decker, now retired, sought the counsel of Gloria Allred and demanded “a public apology and a private apology.” She received neither. Woods has stood by his version. A rep for the golfer declined to comment.

  38. Steve:

I’m not sure this methodology is the right one. The problem is that the contents of TWIH is not like the big hate crime stories that the press holds up as symbols of hate in the US. It’s more like hate crime police blotter.

I recall reading around the time that the press was trumpeting some ultimately-bullshit hate story (Zimmerman/Martin maybe?), a tiny item that had no national impact: Some white guy, recently released from prison, whose father had been severely victimized in some way (i.e. at the killed-or-crippled level, but I don’t remember exactly) by some random black people, decided to murder some other random black people as revenge. He was swiftly caught and looking at some hefty punishment. This struck me as a much more clear-cut case than what was currently on the media’s mind, but it was of no real interest to them.

This seems like the salient fact about hate hoaxes and the media: It’s not that any reasonable person expects that in a country of 300 million people, you won’t be able to find 7 shitheads per week. It’s that when the media decides to focus on a story, it turns out to be bogus at a surprisingly high rate. If the media simply picked from all incidents the ones most likely to stand up to scrutiny, I’d expect them to have a much better track record. So this probably isn’t the criteria they are using.

It’s easy to speculate about what criteria they actually are using, and why this tends to select hoaxes, but that’s not the point. Hate stories of national prominence are likely to be bogus, and so it seems like you have to start out by measuring the national prominence of hate stories in some way, and seeing how well that predicts bogusness.

  39. Calvin Hobbes [AKA "Calvin X Hobbes"] says:

DAYTON, Ind. – What do you see when you pass the billboard installed in March 2018 along Indiana 38 across from Lafayette’s Subaru plant as a towering poke in the eye in a small town’s neighbor-vs.-neighbor struggles?

It’s the one that riffs on a motto found on the prolific, red-and-white signs planted in yards in the town just on the other side of Interstate 65:

    “Keep Dayton Small.

    “Keep Dayton Friendly.

    “Keep Dayton Dayton.”

One interpretation, featured on postcards that started making the rounds this week, starts at the beginning of each line for a take that had both sides in the long-running Keep Dayton Small feud up in arms and pointing fingers on Thursday.

On the postcard’s front, over a picture of the billboard: “No matter how you justify it, it still says KKK.”

On the back is a pre-printed address of Lamar Advertising, the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, company that leases the billboard space.

The creator, Brian Dilkes, a Purdue biochemistry professor living in Lafayette, said his point isn’t meant to accuse anyone of Ku Klux Klan membership or stake a claim in the fight over whether to limit annexation and housing growth in the town of 1,550 people.

“It states, quite simply, that billboard spells ‘KKK’ down the left side,” Dilkes said. “That’s it. … I just don’t like a billboard that spells, ‘KKK,” sitting on (Indiana) 38 that I see every time I go to Indianapolis.”

Brazilians are generally visa overstayers, not border crossers or document forgers. And sure enough, she overstayed her visa in ... 1994, about a quarter century ago. She's 41, so that means she was about 16 or 17 when she overstayed. Props for not being deported yet, but the self-own-goal double play was unfortunate: coming to ICE attention as an illegal due to a criminal act, which puts her into the highest deportation category.

On the other hand, criminal and long-term illegal Ravi Ragbir is still chilling out in New York.

If deported she'll have to brush up on recent Brazilian Portuguese slang. A common problem for returnees who came when young is that they never learned the "business" or "hospitality" or "customer facing" versions of their native language. They are completely fluent, but they come off as brusque or rude. That limits job possibilities. On the other hand, they speak English.

This is true in Japan, and many returnees (who were partly educated abroad when the father's job took him to an overseas office) end up in the American School through high school and have to cram on the more formal Japanese ways of speaking.

Broadcasters, flight attendants, hotel management students, and many others are trained in more formal ways of speaking than they acquired naturally, so it's possible. Even if this would be completely unused by the sort of trash immigrants we have as illegals, it would nullify a talking point of deportation opponents. You sometimes hear that some illegals "can't speak Spanish," which is bullshit. They can't speak business Spanish. They are either native speakers from Spanish speaking countries, or they were children raised by an illegal Spanish speaking mother who speak some form of Spanish natively in the home.

  46. Thank you, Steve, for doing all that work.

You have proven what we all know, but it had to be done. You even went out of your way not to be biased, so far in fact that your results are probably more conservative than the truth, which is in fact: The vast majority of so-called “hate crimes” are hoaxes, and there is practically no hate directed at non-whites by whites, not enough to matter.

We all know this, but thanks for doing the dirty work.

  47. Vandalizing someone’s home or business with spray-painted swastikas sounds like a “hate crime” to me. However, drawing swastikas on a bathroom wall or a highway underpass is just graffiti. I recall that as a kid I occasionally doodled swastikas in the margins of note paper. They were fun to draw and not such a big deal at the time. Now that they drive people to hysterics they must be irresistible to vandals, so much more potent than the “Fuck You” messages that depressed Holden Caulfield:

But while I was sitting down, I saw something that drove me crazy. Somebody’d written “Fuck you” on the wall. It drove me damn near crazy. I thought how Phoebe and all the other little kids would see it, and how they’d wonder what the hell it meant, and then finally some dirty kid would tell them – all cockeyed, naturally – what it meant, and how they’d all think about it and maybe even worry about it for a couple of days. I kept wanting to kill whoever’d written it. I figured it was some perverty bum that’d sneaked in the school late at night to take a leak or something and then wrote it on the wall. I kept picturing myself catching him at it, and how I’d smash his head on the stone steps till he was good and goddam dead and bloody. But I knew, too, I wouldn’t have the guts to do it. I knew that. That made me even more depressed.

Wed, 03 Mar 2010 22:48:24 GMT — University of Missouri police have arrested two white naval midshipmen for spreading cotton balls in front of the campus TM black culture center.

Senior Zachary Tucker, 21, and freshmen Sean Fitzgerald, 19, were arrested Tuesday about 7:30 p.m., after authorities received an anonymous tip.

Fitzgerald and Tucker have been arrested on the suspicion of one count of felony each of tampering and could face "enhanced penalties" under Missouri TMs hate crime law. Investigators say the two suspects spread cotton balls in front of Mizzou TMs Black Culture Center on Friday.

Mostly female, many Asians. Think these kids are using racial slurs and doing the teen equivalent of burning crosses? Ha! Yeah, right. They are going to be so politically correct it’s ridiculous. The entire article is likely based on total BS. Probably one kid in the school sent a rude text at some point and the entire affair is being goosed to look like it’s a nest of vile racists.

    “can’t speak Spanish,”

I don’t know about the other parts of the country, but here in Texas, it’s a common compliment to say that someone speaks ‘good Spanish,’ even Mexicans and Central Americans.

I think the other commenter was right that even most Americans don’t speak good English, but theirs is good enough so that’s it’s not a detriment to getting at least a low-level white collar job, i.e. as a bank teller.

    NYT:

the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, said that of an estimated 21,000 hate crime cases between 2016 and 2018, fewer than 50 reports were found to be false. The center believes that less than 1 percent of all reported hate crimes are false.

As Mr. McKenna pointed out the in the sub-thread under the "Another Day, Another Hate Hoax" post,

the latest NYT “factoid” joins the “10% of Americans are gay” and “1 in 4 women are raped” and the rest of the BS everyone believes because they “read it somewhere.”

Since we seem to present at the creation of the Left's new substanceless but unassailable statistic: "less than 1 percent of all reported hate crimes are false!", I will make a probably futile attempt to head off this new statistical cancer before it metastasizes throughout media system.

The pompously named Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism is really just the office of SPLC alum Brian Levin and his research assistant at a minor league university. So really this is just an SPLC satellite operation with a state subsidy.

This fake "Center" then propounds the existence of

21,000 hate crime cases between 2016 and 2018.

Wow, "cases"! Like legal cases with lawyers, lawsuits, police investigations and so on? Well no. "Cases" just means whatever Hate Crime Impresario Brian Levin says it means. According to Quartz,

Levin ... and his team rely on media reports

so media reports = cases = "hate crimes" equal whatever they say they equal. Looking at the Center's website, they offer no database of the putative 21,000 hate crimes. Indeed, they don't even seem to have downloaded the FBI's stats since 2015. You just gotta trust 'em on this one.

    How about

fewer than 50 reports were found to be false

? Who is doing this "finding" of "falsehood"?

That would be our friend Brian Levin again. Since most readers here are aware of thousands of false hate crime reports, how a professional researcher only managed to find "fewer than 50" I'll leave as an exercise for the reader.

Are there any solid hate crime numbers out there? The legit-sounding FBI Hate Crime Reports are just reports, not crimes, so they are almost as meaningless as Levin's numbers.

Presumably there is a knowable number of hate crime convictions per year in the US, but no one seems to know what that number is. In two weeks of scouring the nation for "hate", the NYT managed to find maybe 1 actual convictable crime. So over a year, maybe there are a couple dozen real hate crimes (many of which will be contra-Narrative)? In a country of 330,000,000.

Thus the real comparison of true hate crimes to hoaxes might be a few dozen crimes versus hundreds of hoaxes. So the real hoax ratio is not the Times's zombie figure of "less than 1%". The true hoax ratio is probably a few dozen convictions versus hundreds of hoaxes = most hate crime reports are hoaxes.

    Replies: @ic1000, @Buffalo Joe

NYT: “the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at CSU, San Bernardino, said that of an estimated 21,000 hate crime cases between 2016 and 2018, fewer than 50 reports were found to be false. The center believes that less than 1 percent of all reported hate crimes are false.”

Let’s take a stab at the CSHE’s arithmetic. Three years or 156 weeks “between 2016 and 2018”. Better yet, the CSHE’s Final Hate Crime Status Report gives “an expected numerical range of between 6,069 to 6,245 reported [to police agencies] hate crimes” for the U.S. in 2016 (PDF page 12). Taking the midpoint, that’s a clip of about 120 per week or 240 per two weeks.

“Fewer than 50” false reports 2016-18 works out to 0.7 every two weeks. Less than 1% are false, means 1.2 or fewer per per week (2.4 per two weeks), on average; I’ll use this number below.

Sailer “analyzed all 21 incidents in the second (12/6/16) and third (12/13/16) weeks of ‘This Week in Hate’.” His tally: 2 more or less proved; 5 unproved but more likely than not; 7 unproved and more unlikely than not; 7 disproved.

If I generously give the NYT that all the “more likely than not” and a little under half of the “more unlikely than not” are true, that would give a two week yield of:
2+5+3=10 True or Likely or Possibly True and
    4+7=11 False or Likely False

So of the 240 hate crime cases estimated for those two weeks, the NYT chose 21 (9%) to highlight.
Of the projected 2.4 false reports out of those 240 cases, the NYT found 11.

What are the odds that the NYT would sample 9% of a group, and discover 460% of the false reports within that entire group?

One answer is, of course, “100%”. But I doubt that anybody associated with The Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism would get the joke.

I appreciate all the work, Mr. Sailer. Another point should be made, if I might: Many of these incidents involve graffiti. How many incidents of graffiti are there in the U.S. every day (or week or month)? Who does most of this graffiti? Of all the words and messages written on public walls, how many of them, what percentage of them, involve "hate" as defined by the SPLC and NYT? Is it really believable that in the periods covered by the NYT's hate feature, there were no anti-white words or messages scrawled on public walls in all of the United States? Is it at all conceivable that no graffiti "artist" wrote "Fuck Trump" somewhere or other? I will sympathize with anyone who is terrorized by a true threat, but otherwise every effort must be made to show the NYT's propaganda for what it is.

We quickly forget that a few weeks ago a black woman said a white man shot and killed her seven year old daughter in a drive by..."He intentionally shot my daughter..." She gave a description, find the police sketch, of a white man. The shooter was a black guy, maybe her drug dealer, who she was friends with on Facebook.

  69. Why do white school districts have more money? Is it because white people tend to have more money than those they are compared against in this study? Is it because whites are stuck in an outdated high-trust social model and dumbly pay their taxes? Is it because whites culturally value education? Is it because white kids actually show up for class?
Soros* organ EdBuild via NPR: None of the above, it’s because of redlining that hasn’t been practiced for decades.
    https://www.npr.org/2019/02/26/696794821/why-white-school-districts-have-so-much-more-money

The report starts with a number: $23 billion. According to EdBuild, that’s how much more funding predominantly white school districts receive compared with districts that serve mostly students of color.

“For every student enrolled, the average nonwhite school district receives $2,226 less than a white school district,” the report says.

EdBuild singles out 21 states — including California, New Jersey and New York — in which mostly white districts get more funding than districts composed primarily of students of color.

I clicked through to the underlying report for the NPR piece. It is pretty complicated and it is hard to follow all the puts and takes they make for various adjustments. Nevertheless, if you skip over all the initial verbiage telling you what to think and just go to the underlying figures, three things jump out:

    1) Many districts, especially in the Deep South(!), undermine the white-privilege-narrative they try to push in the verbiage. It sure looks like non-white districts are better funded than white ones in lots of places.

    2) To the extent that there are islands of apparent white privilege, they tend to be in heavily blue states (NY, Cal). This is reminiscent of iSteve's finding of bluer states having greater race differences in academic performance.

    3) To the extent that non-whites are less funded, this looks to be a Hispanic thing rather than a black thing. Which is not so surprising given that Hispanics are less politically represented than blacks, and they live more rural (i.e., less capital intensive) than blacks.

It's sad, but when someone "saves" others from a fire, the authorities know they have to give that same person a serious look as the potential arsonist. Especially if they have been lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to "save" people from burning buildings before.

    Replies: @The Alarmist, @donut, @Reg Cæsar, @South Texas Guy, @Autochthon

There are people like thise you describe, who speak bastardised Spanish just as many idiots speak bastardised English, but there are indeed also truly many who cannot speak Spanish at all (save maybe aome very basic phrases) – these are the indios who speak some crazy Amerindian language no one more than fifty miles from their pueblo has ever heard of. Its a very real phenomenon. As a fluent speaker of (actual) Spanish who’s spent time in Texas, Florida, and Mexinchifornia, I have encountered many of these creatures firsthand.

These would be like iliterate Amerindians in the F.U.S.A. if they’d never left the reservation and hardly been exposed to television or radio, so they only spoke Navajo or Cherokee or some damned thing. You don’t really encounter that here and the analogy fails because even the most depressing, isolated reservations have electricity and basic schooling in English available – not so in parts of Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, etc.

Note also that mestizos love live love to be surly bastards and clam up, often feigning not to understand a language, even when they do; it’s a cultural thing with them, their way of insulting and avoiding conflict or blame while trying to also retain deniability and innocence. It’s very bastardly behaviour.

    Replies: @Buffalo Joe, @Anonymous

  92. It’s definitely worthwhile to review the alleged facts of the NYT’s cherry picked “hate crimes.” Especially insofar as they are either facially implausible or trivial from the get-go.

But the big problem is that the NYT knows full well that the cops will rarely invest the resources to fully investigate and actually solve the case. (The super high-profile Smollett hoax being “the exception that proves the rule.”)

So I think it might be more telling to look at a sample of only the solved cases – and determine what percentage of the time the perp was actually a racist white Trump supporter.

It’s probably a reasonable assumption that the solved cases are more or less representative of the unsolved cases in term of perp ID. So the hoaxster to Trumpster ratio should be approximately the same.

keep sending these illegal c**ksuckers a check after they’ve been deported . Unto what generation do you think it would be fair to cut them off ?

I feel completely differently about this. Of course, you don’t send an annual payment, but I see nothing wrong with paying illegals to leave. Canada does it. For about $2,000 a head they can get rid of people who would cost them more to deal with through the legal system.

Although I have given up on the idea of getting rid of the 12 or 22 or however million illegals there are in the U.S., because Trump is such a cuck, if we were to do it, we couldn’t do it with deportaions. Do the math. Divide the number of illegals by the number of days in a presidential term or two, multiplied by the number of days you’d have to house them during appeals, and throw in the number of agents you’d need, judges, buses and planes. Can’t be done.

Carrot would be cash payments to get the hell out, assistance with unloading immovable assets like real estate (leave and we’ll help you sell it for a fair price, stay and we’ll confiscate it to pay costs in getting rid of you), and Nixon-in-China style reversal of various policies like American factories in Mexico and so on. Long term we want them the hell out. Some jobs lost in the U.S. is a good short term compromise. Underwrite job assitance, training, and houseing in countries of origin for a few years.

Why do white school districts have more money? Is it because white people tend to have more money than those they are compared against in this study? Is it because whites are stuck in an outdated high-trust social model and dumbly pay their taxes? Is it because whites culturally value education? Is it because white kids actually show up for class?

    https://www.npr.org/2019/02/26/696794821/why-white-school-districts-have-so-much-more-money

The report starts with a number: $23 billion. According to EdBuild, that's how much more funding predominantly white school districts receive compared with districts that serve mostly students of color.

"For every student enrolled, the average nonwhite school district receives $2,226 less than a white school district," the report says.

EdBuild singles out 21 states — including California, New Jersey and New York — in which mostly white districts get more funding than districts composed primarily of students of color.

This is reminiscent of iSteve’s finding of bluer states having greater race differences in academic performance.

    3) To the extent that non-whites are less funded, this looks to be a Hispanic thing rather than a black thing. Which is not so surprising given that Hispanics are less politically represented than blacks, and they live more rural (i.e., less capital intensive) than blacks.

Self-defense, no doubt, from all that structural institutional hate which swarms about us every day, unseen, unnoticed, undetected… except by professional Hate Whisperers, who mysteriously neglected to log this as anything other than a standard-issue brutal vicious murder of a generous young White woman by a standard-issue Citizen of Color.

But I doubt that anybody associated with The Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism would get the joke.

keep sending these illegal c**ksuckers a check after they’ve been deported . Unto what generation do you think it would be fair to cut them off ?

I feel completely differently about this.

This is like is a tiger bit off somebody's foot in a Canadian shopping mall: it's terrible that this happened (in those cases where anything did happen; an awful lot of these are pure claims from established attention addicts) but it's not common, not news, not a basis for legislation, and not a huge overwhelming trend.

It doesn't matter how well you document the incompetence/dishonesty of the MSM; few people will see it and even fewer will be swayed to your position. If Breitbart or TDC won't hire you despite your long history of perceptiveness, meticulousness, lack of inflammatory rhetoric, we are damn well screwed.

Yeah, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn adopted that perspective, right? No? And why not? And if Solzhenitsyn didn’t throw in the towel, why should we?

Eventually the truth always wins because reality has no allegiance to Leftism. The only question is how much needless suffering results from Leftist stupidity. And yes, I know the “in the long run we are all dead” adage.

Steve's been pointing out the hypocrisy for what, a decade now?

Yeah, its really acting as the brakes on the MSM's descent into schizophrenia.

We are at the point now where crying about hypocrisy is just another sign of weakness. Document it if you must but it ain't gonna change anything.

Your request is entirely reasonable. We all assent to you claiming Ms. Page as your lawful spouse, though we insist you and she confirm the same in reality – and though we recommend she grab her ankles in anticipation of the verdict, we do not require the same. Let your testimony to the true consummation of the union be the final word on the resolution.

By the constrains and boundaries imposed my Ms. Page in these matters, your claim may not be gainsaid, and hence, she must acquiesce in this matter.

We shall not inquire to closely in the matter of how you dispatch your new instrument.

All well and good, Steve. The people who like your blog agree with you; the people who don't like you also agree with you (ableit silently).

I don't mean this to be too insulting, but you are the Chris Rock ('I love black people, but I hate n@#R$#s) of the right, except that Rock has made millions by speaking the truth (the libs loved quoting that 20 years ago), and you are still driving a Nissan.

Maybe it's time to go all in. That jackass Cohen today used 'racist' or 'racism' as a slur several times against Whites to get a reduced sentence, and it will probably work.

‘Our’? Does this Ellen Page person regard herself as black?

She's a lesbian, so via the Intersectionality Theorem, she shares mystically in the oppression of all the oppressed.

This is the big intersectionality payoff for nice white people: if they can indentify as any sort of victim, then they believe that they can stake a claim to the power of all victims, via a kind of postmodernist osmosis.

The problems start -- as Steve has noted in his many 'coalition of the fringes' posts -- when someone who perceives himself/herself/xirself to be higher up on the intersectionality totem pole resents the grasping for glory from someone lower.

Yes, but has anyone studied how long you can sustain a lie? We know the Soviets did so for about 70 years. The Chinese Communist are right at the 70 year mark. The Norks are at that same time period. Is there an upper bound on human stupidity? I know that Democrats – Leftists – Marxists want to show that stupidity can be institutionalized and made eternal, but how far can they take it?

This is like is a tiger bit off somebody’s foot in a Canadian shopping mall: it’s terrible that this happened (in those cases where anything did happen; an awful lot of these are pure claims from established attention addicts) but it’s not common, not news, not a basis for legislation, and not a huge overwhelming trend.

  132. It’s amazing how many of these hate crimes are swastikas drawn in bathrooms! “This Week In Hate” covered an entire country of 300 million people. The NYT ought to be celebrating the dearth of more serious (white on non-white) hate crimes.

  133. Nice work, Steve. This piece deserves to be widely read and cited.

Was it deemed not prosecutable because just speech? Controversy on if it happened? Other? Why didn’t it move to trial? What happened to lawsuit?

Any of the steveosphere commentariat have legal database searching skills like the amateur Mueller followers?

    Good questions.

The big charge was that he shoved the lady in the hijab to the ground. She turned out to be a cop and the cops don't like that. But there was no reporting on how the altercation began between the arrested man and her 16 year son.

I found an obituary for somebody of the same (common) name and approximate age in NYC about a year or two later, so I assume the arrested man is now dead, although it could just be a coincidence.

There should still be some legal record of what happened with indictment and lawsuit (other articles say hijab cop filed one a few months later). Seems like they both got dropped or there would be stories on resolution. A year seems like enough time for something to happen. Maybe they were still up for grabs while the guy died but legal records would resolve that this happened and caused matters to be dropped.

Mr.Sailer, have you checked on how many of these hoaxes have a LGBT+ individual behind them; or were promoted by organizations with a heavy LGBT+ influence through the usual media-friendly organs (like the very gay Black Lives Matter) ?

My impression is that an unusual amount of them do; but suggesting this is such a taboo, no one wants to notice that drama queens [emphasis on queens] may be causing a lot of unnecessary stress to our civic harmony for ulterior reasons.
