The company is overhauling its algorithms that detect hate speech and deprioritizing hateful comments against Whites, men and Americans.

Dec. 3, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. ESTFacebook is embarking on a major overhaul of its algorithms that detect hate speech, according to internal documents, reversing years of so-called “race-blind” practices.
Those practices resulted in the company being more vigilant about removing slurs lobbed against White users while flagging and deleting innocuous posts by people of color on the platform.
The overhaul, which is known as the WoW Project and is in its early stages, involves re-engineering Facebook’s automated moderation systems to get better at detecting and automatically deleting hateful language that is considered “the worst of the worst,” according to internal documents describing the project obtained by The Washington Post. The “worst of the worst” includes slurs directed at Blacks, Muslims, people of more than one race, the LGBTQ community and Jews, according to the documents.
As one way to assess severity, Facebook assigned different types of attacks numerical scores weighted based on their perceived harm. For example, the company’s systems would now place a higher priority on automatically removing statements such as “Gay people are disgusting” than “Men are pigs.”
Facebook has long banned hate speech — defined as violent or dehumanizing speech — based on race, gender, sexuality and other protected characteristics. It owns Instagram and has the same hate speech policies there. But before the overhaul, the company’s algorithms and policies did not make a distinction between groups that were more likely to be targets of hate speech versus those that have not been historically marginalized. Comments like “White people are stupid” were treated the same as anti-Semitic or racist slurs.
In the first phase of the project, which was announced internally to a small group in October, engineers said they had changed the company’s systems to deprioritize policing contemptuous comments about “Whites,” “men” and “Americans.” Facebook still considers such attacks to be hate speech, and users can still report it to the company. However, the company’s technology now treats them as “low-sensitivity” — or less likely to be harmful — so that they are no longer automatically deleted by the company’s algorithms. That means roughly 10,000 fewer posts are now being deleted each day, according to the documents.
The shift is a response to a racial reckoning within the company as well as years of criticism from civil rights advocates that content from Black users is disproportionately removed, particularly when they use the platform to describe experiences of discrimination.
Some civil rights advocates said the change was overdue.
“To me this is confirmation of what we’ve been demanding for years, an enforcement regime that takes power and historical dynamics into account,” said Arisha Hatch, vice president at the civil rights group Color of Change, who reviewed the documents on behalf of The Post but said she did not know about the changes.
“We know that hate speech targeted towards underrepresented groups can be the most harmful, which is why we have focused our technology on finding the hate speech that users and experts tell us is the most serious,” said Facebook spokeswoman Sally Aldous. “Over the past year, we’ve also updated our policies to catch more implicit hate speech, such as content depicting Blackface, stereotypes about Jewish people controlling the world, and banned Holocaust denial.”
Because describing experiences of discrimination can involve critiquing White people, Facebook’s algorithms often automatically removed that content, demonstrating the ways in which even advanced artificial intelligence can be overzealous in tackling nuanced topics.

“We can’t combat systemic racism if we can’t talk about it, and challenging white supremacy and White men is an important part of having dialogue about racism,” said Danielle Citron, a law professor specializing in free speech at Boston University Law School, who also reviewed the documents. “But you can’t have the conversation if it is being filtered out, bizarrely, by overly blunt hate speech algorithms.”
In addition to deleting comments protesting racism, Facebook’s approach has at times resulted in a stark contrast between its automated takedowns and users’ actual reports about hate speech. At the height of the nationwide protests in June over the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, for example, the top three derogatory terms Facebook’s automated systems removed were “white trash,” a gay slur and “cracker,” according to an internal chart obtained by The Post and first reported by NBC News in July.

A striking thing here is that Facebook has approximately zero real power over us. It isn’t like the power company, or water or sewer much less the police power of the state. It is neither a critical resource, nor is the service Facebook provides difficult to duplicate. All their power over us is simply the power that people give it by using it. I.e. the network effect.

The sad truth is that the vast majority of people who claim to be conservative are in fact liberals in their social outlook and they won't migrate to alternative platforms which they will see as being tainted by white supremacism, Nazism etc. Traditionalists are an extremely small minority.
The other problem is that these alternative platforms will attract the lunatic fringe of the far right - the Hitler fanboys, the foaming-at-the-mouth antisemites, the actual extreme racists, the crazy conspiracy theorists, etc. So the alternative platforms will very quickly get an evil reputation and normies and mainstream conservatives won't go anywhere near them. They'll end up as far right echo-chambers, which is pointless.
The only way to prevent that from happening would be to ban the Hitler fanboys, the foaming-at-the-mouth antisemites, the actual extreme racists and the crazy conspiracy theorists.
Facebook isn’t going far enough comrades. Their users can still block unpleasant personalities from their feed. This cannot stand. If Danielle Citron wants to challenge the systematic racism of some pernicious White man who just wants to catch up with his college roommate, then he can’t be allowed to block her just because he doesn’t want to listen to her. No comrades, he needs to have that critically important conversation that begins with him accepting his guilt and ends with him being called white trash, a cracker, and some gay slur. Furthermore, if he doesn’t have his own personal Danielle Citron, then he needs to have one assigned. Surely, Facebook can adjust their algorithms to match each White man with their own aggrieved PoC, LGBTQ, and Antifa member whose posts forever top their feeds. I have a young business. I’m tired of this anti-white BS. I want to grow the business in order to help my people, but once I get to a certain size, I’d be required BY LAW to hire non-whites.
So I think the solution is to not grow too large. When I reach the threshold, it’s time to start seeding competitor startups via my best guys. Let them grow and specialize, as long as they also agree to look out for our people.
After a bit, we could develop a large and anti-fragile network. It might ALMOST look like a giant company, but would be healthier and we would ALL remain free. There’s no reason why one guy should have all the growth, and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be going all-in on protecting our own people.
Small business networks is a potential solution.
It even works for products… just “outsource” different functions to your networked companies: HR, IT, shipping, etc… same for software products: testing/QA, front end consultants, database consultants, etc.
This is my proposed economic model for fighting against globohomo and for our people and culture.

Most of us take the pragmatic view that if you take armed action, the state will overwhelm you via a thin blue line. A jury of your peers will see you as a nutjob and not a patriot and you will rot in prison or be sentenced to death depending on the state. Of course, if everyone acted at once, the thin blue line would be overwhelmed but who gives the signal, how do we know the others will act at once, and most of us are asleep.
If the risk changed significantly (i.e. there was say, a 5-10%+ risk of dying in a given year), armed conflict would be a lot more likely.

No. In fact, the opposite. I use my Facebook page to advocate for dogs needing rescue, homes, vet care, etc. My friends are members of the rescue community or just avid animal lovers. I unfriend people who share too much personal info nor do I share any (e.g., I didn't post an announcement when my husband died). I'm not sure my participation helps a lot of dogs. My donations probably help more. But I help some.
I love using social media to do something other than socialize.
Does Facebook have a policy on how to handle hate speech against Eric Garcetti? For instance, I just heard Tucker refer to him as “oily”. One would think that might be offensive to Italian-Americans, but the Garcettis Eric descended from moved from Italy to Mexico, and, thus, he is a Mexican-American. Not an Italian-American. But, on top of that, he’s a Jew, according to Jewish tradition. Do enough people even know this? Please make sure Mr. Garcetti is adequately protected from all the complexities of hate speech, Facebook. Thx.

I appreciate you guys cracking a couple jokes in order to lighten the mood. When I read articles of this nature I start to think dark thoughts so it’s nice to get pulled back from the edge a little.
I’m glad that I never jumped onto Facebook or Twitter. These are among the most tolerant platforms of anti-White bigotry currently in the mainstream and they do more to confirm that position as time passes.

Not reading the article, but given Facebook’s global nature, it’s only logical they would want to employ people in other countries. I’m pretty sure FB is the #1 social media site in almost every country on earth.
So I think the solution is to not grow too large. When I reach the threshold, it’s time to start seeding competitor startups via my best guys. Let them grow and specialize, as long as they also agree to look out for our people.
After a bit, we could develop a large and anti-fragile network. It might ALMOST look like a giant company, but would be healthier and we would ALL remain free. There’s no reason why one guy should have all the growth, and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be going all-in on protecting our own people.
Small business networks is a potential solution.
It even works for products... just “outsource” different functions to your networked companies: HR, IT, shipping, etc... same for software products: testing/QA, front end consultants, database consultants, etc.

I’ve got a huge problem with “White Supremacy”.
You’re right, of course, that nations where whites have been “supreme”–i.e. in charge–tend to be decent enough places … if there are enough whites around to sustain them, or decent enough for the whites (ex. South Africa).
The problem with “white supremacy” is that it is/evokes “whites bossing around other people”–as in American slavery or South African apartheid. And those societies or systems are 100% the anti-thesis of what we want.
What we want is the right of white people to live–just like all other people in the world–to live according our norms, values, traditions, culture and govern ourselves.
This is the natural normal order of the world–except for self-government, which is a fundamental right and our birthright as Americans. What minoritarians hate and have conducted their nasty propaganda campaign against is … normality.
I.e. English people able to live in England, as English according to their English norms and traditions not as colonized people in some globohomo outpost. French living in France as French. Germans living in Germany as Germans. …
The American situation is a bit different but America was created by Anglos, and conquered and settled and populated by them and other associated NW European people, creating an amalgam “American people” and culture. Right. Times have always been hard, but whites always kept having children. We’ve faced worse threats before. Huns, Mongols, Black Plague. After a short dark age we came out stronger each time. What is the war we are fighting? If it is what Kyle Rittenhouse was engaged in, he did pretty good when ethnic balance is concerned. The people he unknowingly took out had a 25:1 numbers disadvantage. So with attrition taken into account, it’s like the loss of his life was worth 75 equivalent people, kind of. Even then I’m not sure it’s such a good deal. His kind (i.e. the kind who would bear and use arms the way he did) are relatively thin on the ground now. It’s only 15:1 or so of republicans.
Most of us take the pragmatic view that if you take armed action, the state will overwhelm you via a thin blue line. A jury of your peers will see you as a nutjob and not a patriot and you will rot in prison or be sentenced to death depending on the state. Of course, if everyone acted at once, the thin blue line would be overwhelmed but who gives the signal, how do we know the others will act at once, and most of us are asleep.
If the risk changed significantly (i.e. there was say, a 5-10%+ risk of dying in a given year), armed conflict would be a lot more likely.
On the other hand, the war that the likes of (((Mark Potok))) thinks we are fighting is one of demographics. Birthrates. Immigration rates.

Those alternatives will be a fabulous way to lose lots and lots of money really quickly. You’ll find that the number of conservatives/traditionalists/nationalists who will actually migrate will be very small.
The sad truth is that the vast majority of people who claim to be conservative are in fact liberals in their social outlook and they won’t migrate to alternative platforms which they will see as being tainted by white supremacism, Nazism etc. Traditionalists are an extremely small minority.
The other problem is that these alternative platforms will attract the lunatic fringe of the far right – the Hitler fanboys, the foaming-at-the-mouth antisemites, the actual extreme racists, the crazy conspiracy theorists, etc. So the alternative platforms will very quickly get an evil reputation and normies and mainstream conservatives won’t go anywhere near them. They’ll end up as far right echo-chambers, which is pointless.

No. In fact, the opposite. I use my Facebook page to advocate for dogs needing rescue, homes, vet care, etc. My friends are members of the rescue community or just avid animal lovers. I unfriend people who share too much personal info nor do I share any (e.g., I didn’t post an announcement when my husband died). I’m not sure my participation helps a lot of dogs. My donations probably help more. But I help some.
I love using social media to do something other than socialize.
Even if they refused the assignment and stuck to software, they are still not engineers in any sense. Software developers and programmers are not “engineers” to begin with. I doubt google has many engineers period unless it’s some mechanical/heat transfer/thermo guys involved in keeping racks of servers cool and that kind of thing.

I don’t disagree with what you say. However… my point is that White Supremacy being something that we should automatically recoil from – I think there is something to be gained from asking calmly (and with a sense of being a bit slow to get things) when someone is accused of this – what is so terrible about the concept? And also consider this – on the right day, depending on which way the wind is blowing, the phase of the moon, and IIGFTj, jews consider themselves White too, so they could be included in this Supremacy, if they so choose. No doubt if they wanted in, they’d surely argue the case. It’s kind of their thing.
Maybe I’m a White Exclusivist. I don’t wish separation, I wish to establish areas of White control and association, virtually at first. Kind of like what the Israelis are doing over there. As you know, the non-Whites wish to push us into the sea, and we must fight back.

From her credentials it sounds like she’s not a simple AA case home bad and she comes from a high achieving family.
OTOH one of her big brained ideas is using images of cars randomly captured by google taking street pictures to predict various things about neighborhoods, such as socioeconomic status and whether they vote Republican. Sounds like it would be useful if google’s maps and pictures were your only source of information, but otherwise not very much.
