It really is amazing how the Progs keep thinking about the world as if it still 1968. I suspect a lot of this is the fact that Boomers run the country now. They spent their formative years in a country that was overwhelmingly white and the only other race that mattered was black. Like most old people, they are struggling with change and like many old people, they are digging in their heels, insisting nothing will change.

This is a misuse of language by the (((author))). Schools are not “segregated.” That issue was resolved by the Supreme Court in 1954.

Properly speaking, integration and desegregation are two separate and distinct concepts. If Dallas is “trying ambitious integration programs,” then what the author is really saying is that Dallas is trying to use government power to force racial mixing.

Forced integration should be illegal under the First Amendment’s free association clause. But of course we no longer live under the Constitution, we live under a clique of elite busybodies who know what’s better for us than we do.

And this is true in most major cities. I know about those black lady rocket scientists who sent us to the moon, but where is the next generation of people who are supposed to maintain our technological leadership going to come from? High schools in Brooklyn that used to churn out Jewish Nobel Prize winners now churn out barely literate thugs. As I have mentioned before, the general enrollment public high schools of Philadelphia produce zero National Merit Scholars – none, nada, zip. Most of the (mostly black) students can barely add 2 numbers together or write a complete sentence let alone excel on the SAT. How is this going to work in the future? Doesn’t this catch up with us bigtime at some point? You already see that, for example, the black run DC Metro system is on the verge of collapse. The rare competent white person who gets a job in the system gets pushed out because he makes all of his black colleagues look bad by comparison.

If only it were that simple! Black students from higher-income families tend to significantly underperform white students from lower-income families, so once you’re done adjusting for “affluence” you’re still left with “good schools” = white (and Asian).

For what it’s worth, my personal experience is that large populations of Hispanics tend to drag down the average level simply because they perform somewhat below average, but for the most part they don’t get in the way of higher-achieving (typically white and Asian) folks. So a largely Hispanic school might have mediocre average test scores and therefore look bad on paper, but it can still play host to a substantial minority of white and/or Asian students who take AP classes, earn high SAT scores, gain admission to good colleges, and generally get a good education out of the experience. And an appreciation for mariachi music.

By contrast, large populations of black students not only drag down the average due to their lower individual scores, they are also far more likely to contain violent and disruptive individuals who ruin the experience for others and make it impossible for more talented students to succeed — and would be particularly racist and hostile towards non-black students.

Accordingly, I would be content to send a child of mine to Franklin High School in El Paso (Greatschools.org rating of 4/10, 77% Hispanic), but would never allow a child of mine to attend Lankenau High School in Philadelphia (Greatschools.org rating of 4/10, 95% black).

A perhaps not totally unsurprising twist is that (even in “Red State” Dallas), precisely the areas with inner-city public schools that have been carefully zoned for wealthy homeowners, tend to be full of exactly the same SWPL types who moan and wring their hands about diversity. Whether from ignorance or hypocrisy, I’m not sure.

I started out going to a private school. Then my parents started getting strapped for cash, and moved me to a public school. It was a culture shock to say the least. My private school admitted students based on IQ tests specifically. If you didn’t score in the upper percentile of your age group, you weren’t admitted.

Our principal, who also owned the school, was jewish, and we worshipped her. We were terrified of disappointing her in any way. She was one of the best people I’ve ever met. All the parents loved her. She loved education, and kids. The school was mostly white, with one hawaiian, and one hispanic kid. Income brackets ranged from middle-class to upper middle-class. As an institution for learning… the place was awesome.

By second grade, we knew all our times-tables, and could do division competently. We had cursive handwriting down pat, and were in the second year of our conversational french lessons.

In third grade, I was tossed to the lions of public school. That meant I had to take every subject I knew over again, since third graders didn’t know long division, cursive handwriting, and forget foreign languages. That was over until sixth grade, where we were given Spanish lessons. I found Spanish to be lowbrow, compared to French, and refused to deal with it. I remember thinking, “Why would I want to learn our gardener’s language? Shouldn’t he be learning mine?” Perhaps obnoxious, but I still consider it a good question.

My reading assignments I thought were ridiculously easy. Since I finished Kindergarten at the age of four, I was at least a year younger than everyone else, so they wouldn’t skip me up another grade. Academically, I just had to suck on it. My teacher would become angry with me, as I kept repeating, “I already know that,” when she handed out lessons. And I did. “Well, you’re gonna learn it again!” she’d say. This ritual made us come to despise each other.

Then came the white-trash kids with emotional challenges that were foreign to me. Most of the kids came from broken homes, and lived in apartments. They featured Oakies, Arkies, and Texans. The Texans were the only ones who I’d call “functionally poor,” in that despite their problems, they always had a go at life, had a functioning value system that comported with modern civilization, and were pretty good people. Can’t say the same about Arkies and Oakies. They were a shit mess of humanity. Best thing that could happen to them was to be incarcerated, as it would be a dramatic step up in the quality of life for them, and those around them.

So a couple of months into this, an Arkie kid walked up to me and said, “your ass is grass, after school,” and walked away. I had zero idea of what that meant. I asked another kid what it meant, and he said, “he means he’s going to beat you up after school!” Since I’d hardly spoken a word to the kid, I had no idea why this was happening. Turns out he just wanted to show off. No other reason. He squared off with me in the hallway after school, but didn’t take a swing. I remember thinking, “these kids are stupid, and crazy.” So there I was, a high-IQ kid… getting “C’s”. Going to school was a drama every day. Emotionally disturbed kids, that is, poor dumb kids with broken drunk families, make cohesive classes impossible.

Fourth grade went better, a significant number of the shit kids either dropped out, or moved away, to be replaced later. Poor dumb kids move around a lot. However, our middle-aged white spinster teacher, Miss Burk, was a Japan afficianado. I don’t think she liked how WWII ultimately played out. That meant we studied the history and wonders of Japan… all year. In fourth grade. This was in the later part of the sixties, so I’m guessing it was her attempt to “reprogram” us not to hate the Japanese for WWII, even though we hardly ever saw a Japanese person, much less knew the first thing about WWII.

I distinctly recall raising my hand, then asking her, “how come we have to keep learning about Japan? We’ve been studying it all year. Aren’t there any other countries?” Miss Burk, who was usually like a female “Mr. Rogers,” got extremely angry in class for the first time and said, “I’m the teacher! I’ll be the one to decide what we study, and how long we study it. Not you,” as she angrily slammed a book on her desk for emphasis. At recess, one kid said, “I never thought I’d ever see Miss Burk get mad, but you did it!”

So I got my first taste of cultural marxism, spiced with self-indulgent liberalism via Miss Burk, while the Oakies and Arkies taught me why people tend to like to stick to their own social-economic classes, thanks to our public school system. I had many other interesting adventures. Suffice to say, I’d never send my kid to a public school, if I had any choice in the matter. No kid should be trying to learn basic fundamentals while being unwittingly cast as doubtful character in a second-rate Kafka novel. Cultures clash. One culture must win. If the superior culture gives in to the inferior culture, we cannot expect the results of the superior culture to transpire.

If you think it can, you’re probably a dumb, drunk Arkie, or an emotional/intellectual facsimile of the same.

Yes it is true that we are running out of low crime, high performing White chidren who can be sprinkled in amongst the Blacks and Hispanics, however, while the White children are declining in numbers, we are replacing them with even lower crime, even higher performing Asian children who can take over the same function. I’m sure their parents, who vote 75% the same as their Black and Hispanic fellow Democrats, will have no hesitation in volunteering their kid’s bodies to help the higher cause. We all just have to get past the misconception that there is some characteristic of only pink skin that turns tragic dirt into magic dirt.

Maybe Dallas and the US can import more Asians to boost the NAMs’ performance? Clearly, boosting the performance of NAMs is a job American’s are unwilling to do.

White people in Dallas have their two children each, but the % of white children doesn’t match the % of white people because (1) there is a large gay population in Oak Lawn that is mostly white, (2) there are lots of young singles in Uptown who will eventually marry and have two kids, and (3) the Mexicans keep having three or four kids each.

Very true. .I was a substitute teacher in the 90s. The best experience I had was teaching the bilingual classes.. mostly Mexicans , they were the best behaved students.

UT Austin will admit anyone who graduates in the top 10% of their classes.

This has enabled smarter than average but not brilliant students from mediocre high schools in Texas to go to UT Austin. This has beefed the presence of Latinos and children from immigrant families (Asian, South Asian, Middle Eastern,) who attend mediocre schools.

Same time it has made admissions extremely difficult for smart white students who attend school affluent competitive high schools. There are stories of these kids getting rejected from UT Austin but getting into ivy leagues.

The elephant in the room that the Jew York Times want to ignore is this: that WASP culture is superior culture. I recall one study I read which crowed about the fact that the introduction of busing reduced in-school crime by 30% in a Black school after some of the Black students were shipped off to a suburban White school. When you ship out students and crime falls, then it’s not a leap to infer that the students you shipped out where the ones causing the crime. What happened in the White school when these model students arrived and blessed that school with the glory of diversity?

National Merit seems to have stopped releasing full state results – they now allow each district to announce (or not announce) their results – I wonder why? The last one I could find for PA is from 2012 (more skilled Googlers are invited to find more recent ones).

Central gets 6 (out of a graduating class of 500+). Germantown Friends (private school) also gets 6 but out of a class of maybe 75. Masterman (the real magnet school nowadays) gets 9. Conestoga (suburban school with many but not all Asians) gets almost 30 out of about the same enrollment as Central.

Girls gets zero. Once they allowed girls to attend Central (but not boys to attend Girls) , Central skimmed off all of the cream. White enrollment is 5%, it’s over 3/4 black and Hispanic. Half of the students take at least 1 AP course but of those who take AP classes only 18% passed (meaning getting a 3, 4 or 5. I shudder to think how few 5’s there are.

In short, it’s just another ghetto school now, with the same dismal results. Not many future lady rocket scientists among them. This is just one of those things that doesn’t get discussed in public (for obvious reasons) but it’s going to be a mess when this is all the “talent” that’s available.

When I was in grad school in Dallas, 1977-1981, for three years I was the director of a halfway house for juvenile delinquents. I was at Wilson High for parent teacher conferences. A teacher approached me in the hall and asked whether I was from the halfway house. When I answered in the affirmative he told me he wished he could have an entire classroom of my boys because they were his best behaved, hardest working students. My armed robbers, car thieves and drug dealers were the cream of his crop.

I vowed that no kid of mine would ever darken the doorstep of a DISD school. When we relocated to Dallas 14 years later, we made sure we bought a house in the Richardson school district.

We recently bought a house in one of like five Chicago neighborhoods serviced by a CPS school that you can actually send your kids to if they don’t test into a selective enrollment school. It’s mostly white and Asian, with a sizable but decreasing Hispanic student population, and no blacks. We may send our babies there when they’re school aged.

The neighborhood would SEEM to be a good bet, given the “whitening” of Chicago. Yes, Cook County is losing population, but it’s losing mostly blacks, and it’s gaining whites. Anyone who looks at the crane-studded skyline of the North Side knows this.

The potential problem is that the white gentrifiers will sabotage all the goods of gentrification by voting in lefty aldermen and other community leaders who are desegregation fanatics. This is already happening on the Near North Side, with the probable merger of Jenner (Cabrini Green) and Ogden (Old Town) school districts. It won’t be a big problem there in the long run, given the upward trajectory of the Cabrini Green neighborhood. But in the short terms it will TERRIBLE for the Old Town kids who will have to go over to Jenner, a stone’s throw from what’s left of the projects, where shootings are still common, and literally the worst performing CPS school.

So the great irony of Chicago gentrification is that the new whites may go ahead and ruin the very demographics that made them want to stay and raise families in the city in the first place.

They can and do send their kids to DISD public schools.

My high school was 30% white and every year the vice-principal would ask the white kids if they would like to do a “majority” to minority transfer to Bowie High School, which was and still is over 99% Hispanic. I don’t think anyone ever accepted the offer. Nolan Richardson went to Bowie and coached basketball there for ten years.

When new students enroll at a school/district, they are asked if they speak a language other than English at home, if so they have to take an English proficiency exam. Since Hispanics are bad at standardized exams in any language, even kids fluent in English with two English-speaking parents can wind up in bilingual ed.

The School I taught in was majority Black. Hispanics were just 20% of the students, whites were about 25% of the students. Most of the hispanics were the children of immigrants. This was from 1991-1993 when I was teaching. I imagine it is different when the majority of the School is Hispanic.

Very true. .I was a substitute teacher in the 90s. The best experience I had was teaching the bilingual classes.. mostly Mexicans , they were the best behaved students.

That was also my experience with Mexican kids and with kids from Central America, with one exception: kids from El Salvador. The war was a disruptive experience. For example, there was a 16 year old in 7th grade because he had missed four years of schooling due to the war. No 16 year old is going to be happy in a 7th grade class.

Among the bilingual classes, I can think of some examples of of kids coming to the US without much prior schooling who made big jumps. One year I taught a 4th grade bilingual class. One kid was trying hard, but he was way behind. I thought to myself that the poor kid was mentally retarded. Fortunately, I kept my opinion to myself.The next year I saw the same class. He was at class level, and in English. I found out he had come to the US when he was 8 years old without prior schooling in Mexico. So, he had done five years of schooling in 3rd-5th grade.

That particular class also illustrates an issue about bilingual classes: they should be transitory, not permanent. The first year I had that class I noticed that several kids asked me what some Spanish words meant. My gut reaction was when a native speaker has to ask a Gringo what a word means in Spanish, it is time to move on to English. When I encountered the class the next year, guess what: the class was in English.

For an example of poorly done “bilingual” education, consider the baseball great Manny Ramirez. I read an article circa 1995 which informed its readers that Manny Ramirez was taking English lessons. Good for Manny, I thought- until I found out WHEN he came to the US. Manny came to the US when he was 13, and by the time of the article, had been in the US for ten years. Yet after TEN YEARS in the US he still needed English lessons. Why didn’t he learn English when he was 13-14 years old? That would be the best time to learn.

The responsibility for Manny Ramirez’s not learning English when he came to the US lies with the NYC educational system. The “bilingual” system instead kept him trapped in a Spanish language ghetto. It should be called monolingual instead.

If done correctly,as in many parts of Texas, bilingual education transfers students to all-English classes within a year or two. Bilingual education should not be a monolingual Spanish language ghetto.

In portion to their population numbers, no not really. Look at Congress. Look at CEO boards. Look at celebrities even. Cher, anyone? And those younger people who are in, clearly must toe the line and have a Boomer outlook. But that said, from every angle, Donald Trump is much more liberal than conservative. His views attempt to conserve 1970. Born in the USA? My experience with Hispanic students was that if their parents were born in the USA, their behavior was not the best, shall we say. Not as good as the first generation Hispanic students in bilingual classes, but not as bad as black students.

For a Spanish speaker, there is an easy way to determine the difference between the two. In a regular non-bilingual class, sometimes I would be asked if I spoke Spanish. When I spoke Spanish to born-in-the-USA Hispanic students who spoke Spanish, I was sometimes told “Usted habla chino.”
Translation: “You speak Chinese- I can’t understand your Spanish.” At one school where I taught 9th grade math (no bilingual classes), a student who told me “You speak Chinese” had a mother who was an aide at the school. His mother had no problem understanding my Spanish, but my Spanish was too fast for her born-in-the-USA son who heard English most of the time and probably had never been in a bilingual class.

As I previously mentioned, students from El Salvador were the exception to my observation that bilingual immigrant students were well-behaved. Could also have something to do with the gangs from El Salvador.

So a largely Hispanic school might have mediocre average test scores and therefore look bad on paper, but it can still play host to a substantial minority of white and/or Asian students who take AP classes, earn high SAT scores, gain admission to good colleges, and generally get a good education out of the experience.

An anecdote that supports your point:

The Texas UIL state marching band competition is one of the best in the country, with complex music and difficult marching routines. The south Texas schools — with basically 100 percent Latino membership — always have a decent showing.

They don’t win; the handful of rich suburban Dallas schools are a lock every year. But it’s interesting that there are NO black schools who ever make it past district, while the Latino schools seem to be at least competitive.

To be fair, it’s helped in part by geography, since they compete against each other regionally. But the bands themselves are usually big (200 members) and pretty good.

At the same time, it’s not unusual to see a black 6A school (largest classification) with a band that has fewer than 50 people. Many of these schools can’t even participate in marching competition because of a lack of participation and organization.

By the same token, El Paso’s demographics are not that much different than those of Juarez, but El Paso is consistently rated as one of the safest mid-sized cities in America. By contrast, I’d have a hard time thinking of a majority-black mid-sized city that was anywhere near as safe and orderly. I think we’re agreed on the point that Hispanic populations can be managed with reasonable effort to be relatively orderly and peaceful (even if academically dull), while it is much more difficult to manage a Black population to the same result.

I can see the appeal of that argument. However, as long as the libtards are in control of education, many of those whites will continue to be indoctrinated into their insidious ideology of white guilt. The larger the immigrant group the longer it takes to assimilate them. Asians now make up 6% of the population and that is already in danger of too many. That’s why I’m in favor of cutting off Asian immigration.

The one major thing that Asians are missing is honesty, unfortunately that is the most important thing. Other things such as civic mindedness, taking pride in a job done well, taking care of one’s yard and roof etc. can be taught. The Japanese are the only group outside of WASPs who are most like WASPs, that’s why Japan is the country outside of Europe to reach developed status. They are also smart enough to not encourage mass immigration unlike the west(because they are not run by Jews). Most of their neighbors including the Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, Filipinos are not known for their honesty.

To be fair the lack of honesty is not unique to the Jews. Most people outside the WASP world are dishonest. You’d be a fool to trust a Chinese, Indian or Russian. Some of the most dishonest people are Catholics, esp. the Italians – the believe in purgatory nullifies the fear of God factor. Perhaps dishonesty is simply human nature, for the majority. For a small minority, the honesty chip is in born. WASPs also have Christianity and the fear of God to set them straight, the rest of the world doesn’t. Dishonest societies have trouble enforcing strong rule of law, which leads to corruption, and corruption is the main reason why countries remain under developed.

Lee Kuan Yew famously made all government workers in Singapore wear a name tag and encourage ordinary citizens to report any government worker who tries to solicit bribes. He also paid his cabinet members huge salaries so they have no incentive to take bribes. Singaporean cabinet members make close to $1M in salary per year. Thanks to that he was able to stem out corruption, and Singapore became a 1st world country in one generation. I think one major reason might also be that he made English a primary language in Singapore. To adopt the English trait of honesty, perhaps you need to first speak English and adopt Protestantism. The Japanese are the only exception. Perhaps Latin America wouldn’t be in the corrupt mess that it is today if they were English speaking and protestant instead of Spanish speaking and Catholic.

My local community and school district was regularly castigated 20 years ago for being disgustingly White. The private Christian schools are seeing more and more Asians and, although the White children are far from dumb, the same patterns of Asian tiger mothers and ferocious competition for any award or honor still occurs, and White people retreat . . . to other private schools, or increasingly to home schooling, or they just move away and restart new school districts that are White, at least initially.

Whites may pay lip service to liking Orientals or respecting their work ethic, but they don’t genuinely like living with an overwhelming number of them (which I have, both overseas in their countries and domestically in what used to be my country). The DNA and cultures are too different. It always boggled my mind that these kids were able to quickly pick up another language and not only finish high school but excel. Little kids pick up new languages pretty easily but by the time you are a teenager it’s not an easy thing to both learn a new language while keeping up academically. And in those days there were no bilingual programs – they just threw you into the classroom and you had to pick up algebra even if you didn’t understand English, but somehow these folks did it. I think usually they would sit you next to a kid who was bilingual and he would serve as your translator for a while until you got the hang of it. Of course having a high IQ is really useful in such situations. As the car guys say, there is no replacement for displacement.

One immediate change was that we had to separate the boys and the girls, who had been happily sharing classrooms all along. What a difference it made! The girls’ classes became unbearably dull, while the boys’ classes became rowdy. To me, it was obvious that this sort of separation was bad for both boys and girls.

In both cases, Asian does NOT include Filipino or pacific islander, which get their own categories.

Schooldigger has great historical data on the racial composition of schools. It looks like Lakewood got rid of most of its black students after 2006, while that number steadily declined at White Rock between 2000 and 2008.

Agree with you about the value of single-sex education (my daughter goes to an all-girls school). NYC has a variation on that, with a non-insignificant percentage of school age white children being Orthodox or Hasidic and attending religious schools.

I found the opposite at my all male boarding school. Nobody was getting any so it didnt matter if you were a jock or a theatre geek. Just different hierarchies. Also not any obvious homo teachers.

Our friend, a dark-skinned “indio” Mexican-American, was not a substitute but a full-time teacher in the LAUSD, and more recently. He found the students, who were almost all Mexican, to be terribly behaved, disrespectful, largely uncivilized and unintelligent, often disruptive, sometimes physically menacing to teachers, and generally Hell to try and teach or even simply quiet down so that others could learn.

He found the experience to be physically dangerous, full of fear for his own safety, and utterly unproductive and demoralizing; he quit the LAUSD and even now is hesitant to reenter education in some other capacity.

Glad you guys had a good experience with that demographic. That seems likely unrepresentative even at the time, however, and certainly badly out of date now.

For one thing, it generally couldn’t make sense today to say that “the classes” that were “mostly Mexicans” were the best. Outside a relative few African-majority hellholes, almost every school, in the entire city, is over EIGHTY PERCENT Hispanic, most often Mexican, some over ninety percent.

The LAUSD “student” body is comprised of only about nine percent nonHispanic whites, six percent Asians, less than ten percent Africans, and the “Hispanic” (largely but certainly not all Mexican) percentage continues to rise.

Bardeen was gainfully employed at Bell Labs where he helped invent solid state transistors, which is one of the most important inventions of the 20th century, and has innumerable practical applications. Einsteins only practical invention was the Einstein Refridgerator, which was never used. Einstein’s research was mostly theoretical physics that has no practical application. Relativity, however, is entertaining on a science tv show where one twin flies at the speed of light and comes back still young and his brother is an old man with a beard. I think it was a mix, but the kids weren’t too far removed even if they were 2nd or 3rd generation immigrants, since the demographics in the particular American border-state town I briefly taught in had completely flipped. I also speak Spanish and lived in Mexico for a year, so I would like to believe I understand hispanic environments better than most. But, having taught every grade in 5 or 6 different schools, I just can’t buy any narrative that says mestizo kids are well-behaved if they’re in the majority.

Seemed pretty obvious that the more mestizo the class the less ruly. I kept getting the feeling that the western/white learning environment was completely alien to them and most couldn’t cope, so they lashed, or mentally dropped, out. Because it wasn’t designed for them, or was contradictory to their disposition. They’re lazy people, and don’t like to engage in semi-rigorous activities. To me, that’s just the way it is. It didn’t help that by the 5th or 6th grade most had received a heavy dose of our jewish-produced, Afrocentric, sexualized pop culture, leading them to frequently do things like tell the nice white lady teachers to perform oral sex on them, in less genteel language.

It was a very depressing situation, indicative of the nation’s third worldization and decline. All of the older white administrators and educators were trying to control the mestizo youth flood that had taken over the schools, but you could tell it was overwhelming and shocking to them. It was a battle they were waging quietly by stacking certain classes with their own kids to keep them at least partly removed from the mestizo kids. There was plenty of money for new schools and a desperate need for anyone who could stand in front of a classroom and pretend to teach, though. Very sad for the lower class whites who were forced to put their children into those situations, and the result was to be expected, as it was intended, in that many whites by young adulthood were blending right into it. Made me realize that I have to get myself up to Montana or somewhere like that to avoid this demographic terror that’s being waged on whites.

When I finally got out of an inner-city junior high and into a suburban white-bread high school, I took the two … yep, two out of 1,800 … black yewts on as friends to stop their daily beatings (which I had experienced as a token white in the city school), and found they were indeed much brighter and promising than their inner-city peers, largely because they didn’t have inner-city-minority peer-pressure to keep them down.

It’s not white privilege keeping blacks down … it’s actually black privilege. The privilege to act with impunity to hammer down anybody who dares to stand out in what they perceive to be the white man’s world.

One thing to remember is that if we have the views we do, likely we are genetically resistant. Our critical thinking ability, bs filters, in spite of the dogma coming at us 24/7 through TV/printed word and the education system, has seen to it. Our children are less likely to be converted. From that perspective, sacrificing to have healthy numbers of children should be seen as a duty.

I totally agree with supplementary education and ultimately bypassing and controlling our own entertainment and education. Note that while cradle to grave education/indoctrination is as toxic as it has ever been, the alternative news sources are flourishing, as is demand for them.

I know the Libertarians get a bad rep around here, due specifically to idiotic ideas on open borders, on behalf of the “tardian” wing, but without government involvement in education at all, would we not be much better off? Nationally? So what? (I only read Sailer’s outtakes) Seems likely that the Dallas urban area is no different than other urban areas. In NYC, the white student proportion is in the mid-teens. Ditto Chicago, LA, DC, Philly, and on and on.

The point is, the NYT seems to think it some kind of a scandal that a third of Black and Hispanic attend schools 90% non-white. By the numbers, it’s surprising it’s as low as one-third. Most of the largest population centers have White student populations that are a smaller minority than Blacks or Hispanics.

From my casual observance, single-sex schools work best with high functioning students. I would say that across the country, top-notch all-girl private schools are outnumbered by top-notch all-boy schools, in particular Jesuit. NFL player John Urschel attended a Jesuit high school and is currently a PhD candidate in math at MIT. The son or stepson of Ursula Burns, Chairwoman of Xerox, attended a Jesuit high school. He has a bachelor’s and master’s in nuclear engineering from MIT and is a PhD candidate in petroleum engineering at Stanford. His sister, on the other hand, has two English degrees from NYU – don’t know if she went to an all-girl school.

The all-girl schools in Texas are overwhelmingly low-income and minority, and their results aren’t any different from the coed schools. The first all-boy public school didn’t open in Texas until 2015 and is only grades 4-8. Many of these schools have “leadership” in their title which is basically code for underachieving.

In 1976 Iran opened gifted and talented schools that were soon closed due to the revolution, then reopened in 1987. Maryam Mirzakhani, the only woman to win a Fields Medal, attended Tehran’s gifted school for girls.

Candidates for greatest American physicists are Feynman, Kaku, Gell-Mann, and Witten. Bardeen not in this list.

My daughter felt it was very helpful to her because there was never any implication that girls couldn’t do math or science or that boys were better at it. Since there were no boys around and the STEM classes were being offered, it never occurred to her that she wasn’t supposed to be good at the subject matter – she never even knew that there was supposedly an issue until she was older. By the time she found out that there was an “issue” in the larger society, she had complete confidence in her own abilities.

There is also tons of money tied to how many bilingual students a school has.

In a moment of painful honesty here, I do respect the work ethic…but I don’t like them in a way that I like American blacks. The conversations are just so stiff and rigid. They don’t laugh enough, generally speaking. I’m sure I look like an unkempt, laughing buffoon in their eyes.

Screw the IQ, an American black who is ethical ( IQ does not equal virtue, which Asians data should make perfectly clear) is just more fun and easy to be around.

I went to school now 20 years ago. All public, all co-ed through a BA in Geology. Not *once* did I ever encountered this attitude. Every male teacher I had was supportive of me, as woman in math and science, and I had a female Chemistry teacher who had taught high school chemistry for decades. (She was good, too)

The “confidence” thing is all liberal BS. First, men attracted to math and sciences are generally mellow kind of guys. If you can do the work, they hardly care what who you are. Maybe the wanna bes discouraged women in the 1950s, but not the real deal in my experience.

Meanwhile studies shows women simply don’t prefer the hard maths and sciences. They like humanities. That backs up my experiences as well.

And in yet another seemingly “impossible” experience, I met a highly oppressed nun who got her Phd in Math in Boston in 1950 some odd. You think maybe lack of women in the math/sciences has more to do with natural preferences and the need to raise families rather than “lack of confidence” or “boys can do this better?”

If you’re pushing single sex ed because of big issue that doesn’t exist and most of the people in question doesn’t care if it does exist, then it might be time for a rethink.

The proper policy for language learning is indeed immersion at a young age

There are always going to be exceptional situations with any general strategy. It does not invalidate the general strategy. Get a career, meet, woo, marry, reproduce, educate. One can research and practice each step.

My suggestion is more aimed at those who limit themselves to 1-3 children, when with some sacrifice and hard work, they can have more.
