From the Chicago Sun-Times:

Statues of four U.S. presidents among 40 under the microscope by Chicago committee

Mayor Lori Lightfoot is confronting the “hard truths of Chicago’s racial history,” launching a public process to review the fate of 40 statues and other monuments, including some of former presidents Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Ulysses S. Grant and William McKinley.

By Fran Spielman Feb 17, 2021, 5:22pm CST

According to the Chicago Monuments Project, “many art historians regard Lincoln Park’s ‘Standing Lincoln’ [by Augustus Saint-Gaudens] as one of the 19th century’s greatest masterpieces of public art.” But the project also has placed the statue on a list of 40 monuments that are being reviewed. Sun-Times file

These racist statues represent courage, leadership, and beauty. That’s not who we are anymore.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot vowed Wednesday to confront the “hard truths of Chicago’s racial history” — by launching a public process to review the fate of 40 statues, plaques and works of art, including those of four former U.S. presidents: Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Ulysses S. Grant and William McKinley.

Also, Ben Franklin, Philip Sheridan, Jolliet, Marquette, and La Salle, Haym Salomon, the cops blown up at the Haymarket Riot, Leif Ericson, Christopher Columbus, and various American Indians.

The one genuine bad guy with a Chicago monument is Italo Balbo, Mussolini’s designated successor, who was rather bloodthirstier than Mussolini was. It’s a column with no statue on it, so it could easily be rededicated to one of the countless famous Italians.

The statues of Goethe’s Young Werther and, of course, of the Woke’s favorite reactionary plutocrat Alexander Hamilton made the grade, however.

Six months ago, Lightfoot ordered two statues of Christopher Columbus “temporarily” removed in the middle of the night after receiving “intelligence that gave us great concern” something bad was about to happen.

At the same time, the mayor argued Chicago statues of Columbus in Grant and Arrigo Parks vandalized repeatedly since the death of George Floyd should not be torn down, but rather used to confront the nation’s history and trigger a “reckoning” that’s long-overdue. …

Last summer, hundreds of protesters surrounded the Columbus statue in Grant Park. They attempted to pull the statue down and battled with Chicago police officers, many of whom were injured.

So isn’t the real question why it took so long?

It took so long because one’s “real feelings “ are not the issue. Ebony magazine in 1968 would not be pleased with the real feelings of black folk from Lincoln’s time, either. Ebony would no doubt find the ideas of it’s co-ethnics incomprehensibly in the wrong.

Iconoclasm ain’t about real feelings. We could have every neck that ever lived in the past if we wanted. It’s about stories and timing. Lincoln will be dethroned when someone thinks the time is right.

The hadith – the traditions of the words and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad – … express a clear antipathy towards figurative depictions. Some hadiths make it absolutely clear that a person who tries to emulate God’s creative force will be hard pressed on the Day of Judgment.

Good point. Back in the aughties, I was skeptical of the projections of guys like Robert "Prayers for the Assassin" Ferrigno and Mark Steyn that the West was poised to turn Islamic. But it is hard to ignore that within the last 12 months, many planks of the Islamist platform have become generally enforced policy: face coverings when out in public, mandatory social distance between non-clan members, the destruction of figurative art, and an Ottoman millet-like system of public governance.

Yes, none—or almost none—of this was done in reference to Islamic theology, but perhaps my mistake was in assuming the theology had to precede the program. It may be that if you get most of the program without mentioning the theology, you can just slot the theology in place later. After all, even in nominally Muslim countries most citizens probably couldn't explicate Islamic theology, even though their society is built on its laws.

Come to think of it, if we're already doing all of the above plus mandatory obeisance to state-sponsored religion (currently BLM), swapping that religion for full Mohammedanism would be a quick way to reverse the outcomes of WWG and WWT among other things.

They have nothing against graven images, they just have to be statues of people of color. No one wants to take down the MLK statue in Washington. In this respect this is not a religious revolution but rather regime change, like the French Revolution where they took down all the statues of French kings.

I think that the list is too short. They need to take down ALL the statues of white people in order to make their intentions perfectly clear. And replace them with statues of People of Color. How many Harriet Tubman statues are there in Chicago? Also they should redo the calendar which is based on the birth date of a white guy. The former 1929, the year of the birth of MLK, should be Year 1 under the new calendar. Or maybe 1925 for Malcolm X - King was in the end a bit of an Uncle Tom with his non-violence talk.

The problem in America is that we have had a revolution but a lot of people don't even realize it. Maybe seeing all of those empty pedestals will finally drive it home to white people that we've had one and that they were on the losing end of it. Also we need to get white people off of all of the currency.

30 public schools in Chicago are named for slaveholders; surprised CPS promises changes

The Sun-Times also found that schools named for white people — mostly men — outnumber those named for African Americans by 4-1, Latinos 9-1 and indigenous people 120-1.

I’d say African Americans are overrepresented in the names that Chicago public schools bear—since white people actually outnumber them by 6-1 in the general population.

There is a Roberto Clemente High School in Chicago, although he didn't have anything to do with Chicago other that bashing Cubs pitching.

On the other hand, Clemente died a hero:

Clemente spent much of his time during the off-season involved in charity work. When Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua, was affected by a massive earthquake on December 23, 1972, Clemente (who visited Managua three weeks before the quake) immediately set to work arranging emergency relief flights.[69] He soon learned, however, that the aid packages on the first three flights had been diverted by corrupt officials of the Somoza government, never reaching victims of the quake.[70] He decided to accompany the fourth relief flight, hoping that his presence would ensure that the aid would be delivered to the survivors.[71] The airplane he chartered for a New Year's Eve flight, a Douglas DC-7 cargo plane, had a history of mechanical problems and an insufficient number of flight personnel (missing both a flight engineer and copilot), and was overloaded by 4,200 pounds (1,900 kg).[72] It crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico immediately after takeoff on December 31, 1972, due to engine failure.[73]

A few days after the crash, the body of the pilot and part of the fuselage of the plane were found. An empty flight case apparently belonging to Clemente was the only personal item recovered from the plane. Clemente's teammate and close friend Manny Sanguillén was the only member of the Pirates not to attend Roberto's memorial service. The Pirates catcher chose instead to dive into the waters where Clemente's plane had crashed in an effort to find his teammate. The bodies of Clemente and three others who were also on the four-engine plane were never recovered.[73]

Clemente got his 3000th hit in his last at-bat of his life.

General President Franco of Spain and Mussolini are two of the greatest heros of the 20th century. Had Mussolini picked the right side in WW2 he would be a hero today. Maybe even a Righteous Gentile who saved a gazillion jews from the ovens. Mussolini whipped the communists and instituted some kind of capitalist socialist economy that was good for big medium and small business and labor. A great man.

Balbo was a great pioneering aeronautical engineer. Seaplane wasn’t the only thing he invented.

Lincoln unleashed the Black Plague on the north and west. Chicago's full of those Gaudens and Lafcrado? statues and sculptures. They are great works of art. They should be preserved as art. As the hideous 20th century ugliness falls into disfavor, Gaudens and his contemporaries will be appreciated more and more. I wonder what the value of Picassos will be 200 years from now.

If Balbo had been in charge of Italy it would have been a more successful example of Fascism, which is why he may have been knocked off by Mussolini. Balbo had started criticizing Mussolini’s corrupt leadership pointing out how Italian production of munitions and aircraft had been crippled by favoritism and haphazard planning, resulting in a far lower output than during WW1. ( It also didn’t help that unlike Benito, Balbo was an aviation hero, was tall, handsome, and had a full head of hair). Balbo was killed by friendly anti-aircraft fire while landing at his base during the war. Italian soldiers and sailors didn’t get a lot of training in aircraft and ship recognition, naval ships had giant red and white stripes painted on the foredeck to keep them from being bombed by the Italian Air Force. Nevertheless Italian bombers were easily distinguishable from Allied bombers because they had three engines, instead of either two or four. The fact that his plane was shot down at close range and low speed while landing led to speculation the gun crew had been ordered to take him out.
Balbo’s flight of seaplanes to the Chicago Century of Progress fair in 1933 was an interesting bit of interwar history and propaganda coup. Hundreds of thousands watched as he brought the armada of 24 planes in to land on the lake. This was in the depth of the Depression when there was some thought that Democracy and Capitalism had failed and the future belonged to the authoritarian systems like Fascism and Communism that could do a better job of organizing and exploiting a society’s resources. The flight was meant to demonstrate how a small, resource poor country like Italy could progress and thrive under the right system while the giant but atomized US floundered without leadership and purpose. There was probably also a not so subtle message delivered, by flying an armada of large airplanes into the heartland, that the US could no longer rely on the protection of the oceans.

I'm happy to see you post this. I've never bothered trying to show on here the cultural and religious philoSemitism that was key to John Adams, which came from his being a quintessential WASP.

That problem is everywhere in the Anglosphere, back to the Anglo-Saxon Puritans, if you allow yourself to see it.

People do not want to see black crime rates because that would force them to see blacks as something far from the stereotype that Liberals demand we swallow. People do not want to see that Anglo-Saxon Puritanism was a Judaizing heresy and that it spawned WASP culture, which forever produces elites and devout Protestants 0f all classes that are arch philoSemites because that would require them then to either embrace philoSemitism or else reject WASP culture as inimical.

Some people who see almost everything else flat refuse to see that. And so the problem not merely remains but worsens.

    , @Alden
    @Lot

Adams was a descendant of the Puritan who financed half the Mayflower voyage. They were all wanna be jews who hated Christianity so much they couldn’t bear to live in a Christian country.

They really wanted to live as Jews as they understood Jewish life. A major beef against Christianity and King James 1 was the traditional organized sports, dances and picnics on Sunday after church. They just went home and read the more genocidal parts of the OT all day and are cold food prepared the day before.,

As underground Puritan wanna be jews took over individual churches and villages; King James 1 had to sign a decree legalizing the traditional Sunday afternoon activities. That was actually the proximate cause of the Plymouth Brethen’s decision to leave England. organized sports and picnics on Sunday after church

It was a crime not to attend a certain number of C of E services a year. Law was enforced by heavy bankrupting fines. But no one compelled puritans to play sports and have some fun on Sunday afternoons. They just feared that somewhere, sometime, someone in England was having fun.

200 years later their descendants were still wanna be jews. The Masonic influence on early America is well documented It would be interesting to research the Jewish influence on 1600s early America.

Maybe, but once you accept the tearing down of statues and monuments, of anyone, then you have no right to question anymore why they are pulling down statues of people they think are “bad guys”.

My own theory about statues and monuments is more about aesthetics than politics. If it’s nice, leave it. If it’s not, remove it. The remotion of the statues of Communist in Eastern Europe wasn’t sad, not just because communism was odious, but also because they were mostly ugly statues anyway.

On the other hand, statues and monuments are mostly really about political propaganda. So if “they” are in power now, it is obvious that they are going to replace the older statues with newer monuments more adequate to their allegiances. (Perhaps we’ll see a statue of Satan some day).

The consolation is that all monuments – and all the powers they represent – sooner or later end up like Ozymandias’.

I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
    The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
    My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!

Well, if that were actually the reason they were canceling him.

For the record: I think the South was wrong -- slavery really was a major (though not the only) reason for secession, at least for the first seven states that seceded (the last four may have seceded more because of Lincoln's call for troops to repress the first seven secessionist states).

But a skilled statesman should have been able to resolve the crisis without getting more than a half million of his countrymen killed.

As far as I can see, about the only things Lincoln had going for him was the greater population of the North and the enormously greater industrial capability of the North.

  25. The artistic or historic value or otherwise of these statues, monuments, etc is irrelevant.

What is happening is that the new owners of Chicago ( and other urban spaces ) are decorating as they see fit…….p!ss marking their territory.

This process will not be reversed since the majority of the population of the city rightly or wrongly feel no loyalty at all to the idea or history of America……all those Revolutionary War generals, all the Founding Fathers etc are just dead white European males from a parallel universe to their own.

  29. I understand why so many politicians want these statues gone, and are more than happy to outsource their destruction to the mob. The statues remind us that, once upon a time, we had truly great leaders.

Also, as I’ve said before, this is just the beginning. Obviously this is the result of a conquest, and the conquerors are renaming landmarks as they see fit, with the principal purpose being to humiliate the conquered. But when they are done removing statues that offend them they will look at our white skin and tell us “Your skin reminds us of racism and slavery. You must go.”

There's a link to an older story on that Chicago Sun-Times page, from December 30th.

30 public schools in Chicago are named for slaveholders; surprised CPS promises changes

The Sun-Times also found that schools named for white people — mostly men — outnumber those named for African Americans by 4-1, Latinos 9-1 and indigenous people 120-1.

I'd say African Americans are overrepresented in the names that Chicago public schools bear—since white people actually outnumber them by 6-1 in the general population.

When Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua, was affected by a massive earthquake on December 23, 1972, Clemente (who visited Managua three weeks before the quake) immediately set to work arranging emergency relief flights.[69] He soon learned, however, that the aid packages on the first three flights had been diverted by corrupt officials of the Somoza government, never reaching victims of the quake.[70] He decided to accompany the fourth relief flight, hoping that his presence would ensure that the aid would be delivered to the survivors.[71] The airplane he chartered for a New Year’s Eve flight, a Douglas DC-7 cargo plane, had a history of mechanical problems and an insufficient number of flight personnel (missing both a flight engineer and copilot), and was overloaded by 4,200 pounds (1,900 kg).[72] It crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico immediately after takeoff on December 31, 1972, due to engine failure.[73]

A few days after the crash, the body of the pilot and part of the fuselage of the plane were found. An empty flight case apparently belonging to Clemente was the only personal item recovered from the plane. Clemente’s teammate and close friend Manny Sanguillén was the only member of the Pirates not to attend Roberto’s memorial service. The Pirates catcher chose instead to dive into the waters where Clemente’s plane had crashed in an effort to find his teammate.

Well, if that were actually the reason they were canceling him.

For the record: I think the South was wrong — slavery really was a major (though not the only) reason for secession, at least for the first seven states that seceded (the last four may have seceded more because of Lincoln’s call for troops to repress the first seven secessionist states).

But a skilled statesman should have been able to resolve the crisis without getting more than a half million of his countrymen killed.

As far as I can see, about the only things Lincoln had going for him was the greater population of the North and the enormously greater industrial capability of the North.

I guess we have to emulate the Muslims and eschew portraying the human form in art.

Or maybe 1925 for Malcolm X – King was in the end a bit of an Uncle Tom with his non-violence talk.

Lincoln can go. I’ve learned enough about him to despise him. I’ve always thought the main reason why he called for troops to invade the South was as an outlet for his aggression because of his bad marriage.

His wife treated him like garbage and threw things at him and screamed abusively at him a lot of the time. I am convinced he attacked the South because he was projecting his hostility towards his wife on to them.

The reason he married the Southern woman Mary Todd in the first place is because he wanted to take her away from Stephen Douglas, who was also dating her, and Lincoln really wanted to humiliate Douglas by doing this.

But Lincoln couldn’t admit to himself that he had made a horrible mistake, so he projected his anger and hostility elsewhere. Mary symbolized the South for him, which is why he had to attack it.

Chicago’s full of those Gaudens and Lafcrado? statues and sculptures.

Arabs and Turks in Italy? Uh, no. Contra oft repeated but factually unsupported stereotypes, there is less genetic distinction between Northern and Southern Italians than between Northern and Southern Germans. Italians are a Mediterranean European people. From Mussolini to Matteo Salvini, Northern Italians look/are Mediterranean, though they may not get nearly as much sun as in Southern Italy latitudes. Before Latin Rome's rise, old Italic tribes and Ancient Greek colonists settled Southern Italy+Sicily, known to Rome as Magna Græcia ('Great Greece'), as home to more Greeks than any other part of the ancient world. In the Classical period, Doric Greek Syracusæ (hometown of Archimedes) was a larger and more powerful city than Athens, possibly the greatest European city of its time, which Athenians infamously learned the hard way on the "Sicilian Expedition" in Peloponnesian War.

After fall of Western Roman Empire, all of Italy (N+S) fell under Germanic Ostrogoth Kingdom rule, later divided between Germanic Lombards and Byzantine Hellenic Romans. Saracens conquered+ruled Sicily for about a century in 9th century before being reconquered and expelled by the Normans; Norman Kingdom of Sicily founded around same time as Norman Kingdom of England. Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (Southern Italy/Naples+Sicily) spent more time under Norman+German (Hohenstafen) rule than Saracens (mostly Berbers or Punic descendants, and they ruled it as part of their imperialist caliphate, they did not mass-settle population to have great impact genetically. Contrast Iberia, which spent ~800 years as Moslem al-Andalus before Spanish Christian Reconquista.)

Or else by same 'logic' Southern Italy must be full of Norse genes from the Normans; Norman-German Kingdom of Sicily was actually among the most culturally and influential in its time, Palermo was a more significant capital than Paris or London. And under German and Angevin rule, large numbers of Northern Italians were resettled in the South to replace expelled Moslems, later joined by Byzantine Greeks. Italian Renaissance (later spreading to all Western Europe) triggered by fleeing Hellenic Romans from Byzantine Roman Empire especially after fall of Constantinopolis flooding Italy with Classical Græco-Roman learning, science, philosophy, art, etc., leading to neo-Classical 'rebirth'. Many Byzantine Greek Christians re-settled in Southern Italy/Sicily to escape Ottoman Turk Mohammedan conquest of the Balkans/Southeast Europe.

Southern Italy only declined after it fell under the rule of Crown of Aragón in the 15th century and later Spanish Empire, which neglected the former centre of the Mediterranean Old World allowed to fall into decline under Spanish Inquisition and corrupt proxy rulers as Spain focused on the riches of the New World; then Spain itself fell into decline...

For I really wish the Jews again in Judea an independent nation.”

But a skilled statesman should have been able to resolve the crisis without getting more than a half million of his countrymen killed.

They could work them 12+ hours a day and throw them out onto the streets at the end of the day, without a further care in the world.

Then the Northerners discovered they could protect their ill-gotten gains even further by paying off their increasing share of Congress (increasing thanks to the aforesaid immigration) to pass laws favoring and protecting their positions while turning the screws upon the South.

The one genuine bad guy with a Chicago monument is Italo Balbo, Mussolini’s designated successor, who was rather bloodthirstier than Mussolini was. It’s a column with no statue on it, so it could easily be rededicated to one of the countless famous Italians.

Maybe, but once you accept the tearing down of statues and monuments, of anyone, then you have no right to question anymore why they are pulling down statues of people they think are "bad guys".

My own theory about statues and monuments is more about aesthetics than politics. If it's nice, leave it. If it's not, remove it. The remotion of the statues of Communist in Eastern Europe wasn't sad, not just because communism was odious, but also because they were mostly ugly statues anyway.

On the other hand, statues and monuments are mostly really about political propaganda. So if "they" are in power now, it is obvious that they are going to replace the older statues with newer monuments more adequate to their allegiances. (Perhaps we'll see a statue of Satan some day).

The consolation is that all monuments - and all the powers they represent - sooner or later end up like Ozymandias'.

Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
    The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
    My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

    History never stops.

There was a time when the area now under Chicago was deserted or inhabited by native American Indians. The European settlers came and built the great city with its spectacular skyline and multi-billion dollar economy and decorated the city with statues of their heroes and leaders.

Now in turn they have been replaced by a largely non-European population over recent decades and they, in turn, want the space decorated how they want it.

History never stops. There is essentially nothing that can be done about it.

Italians are a Mediterranean European people. From Mussolini to Matteo Salvini, Northern Italians look/are Mediterranean, though they may not get nearly as much sun as in Southern Italy latitudes. Before Latin Rome’s rise, old Italic tribes and Ancient Greek colonists settled Southern Italy+Sicily, known to Rome as Magna Græcia (‘Great Greece’), as home to more Greeks than any other part of the ancient world. In the Classical period, Doric Greek Syracusæ (hometown of Archimedes) was a larger and more powerful city than Athens, possibly the greatest European city of its time, which Athenians infamously learned the hard way on the “Sicilian Expedition” in Peloponnesian War.

Contrast Iberia, which spent ~800 years as Moslem al-Andalus before Spanish Christian Reconquista.)

Or else by same ‘logic’ Southern Italy must be full of Norse genes from the Normans; Norman-German Kingdom of Sicily was actually among the most culturally and influential in its time, Palermo was a more significant capital than Paris or London. And under German and Angevin rule, large numbers of Northern Italians were resettled in the South to replace expelled Moslems, later joined by Byzantine Greeks. Italian Renaissance (later spreading to all Western Europe) triggered by fleeing Hellenic Romans from Byzantine Roman Empire especially after fall of Constantinopolis flooding Italy with Classical Græco-Roman learning, science, philosophy, art, etc., leading to neo-Classical ‘rebirth’. Many Byzantine Greek Christians re-settled in Southern Italy/Sicily to escape Ottoman Turk Mohammedan conquest of the Balkans/Southeast Europe.

Southern Italy only declined after it fell under the rule of Crown of Aragón in the 15th century and later Spanish Empire, which neglected the former centre of the Mediterranean Old World allowed to fall into decline under Spanish Inquisition and corrupt proxy rulers as Spain focused on the riches of the New World; then Spain itself fell into decline…

Exactly. Those immigrants cost far less, and did far more. They earned their keep. They paid for their own food, clothes, and housing. If one ran away, good riddance. Others lined up to replace him.

No less than two people representing the highest echelons of Anglo-Saxon society in the North and South during the US Civil War of 1861-1865 would agree with your assessment.

Eliza Andrews, whose father was one of the self described 'privileged 4000' who ruled over the US South as he owned over a hundred slaves, wrote the quote below in 1908 about the actual root cause of the US Civil War. According to her it was that the South's chattel slave system was simply 'less profitable' than the Norths wage slavery (ie specifically the so called 'cheap labor'/'mass immigration' system).

Saying the very same thing in pure numbers, Robert J Walker, a former slave speculator, US Treasurer, and governor of Bleeding Kansas circa 1857, and in 1863 the financial representative of the Lincoln administration in London, taking numerous variables into account, effectively calculated that wage slave ('cheap labor' so called) dependent Massachusetts was four times more productive than the corresponding chattel slave dependent South Carolina.

He published these figures in a 'Why we fight' type of an article (one of a series he wrote) for Northern consumption in 1864. (See 'comments' link below for the original source link of those calculations.)

Relatedly, speaking of 1850's 'Bleeding Kansas', it's long been seen as a micro-cosm of the coming US Civil War of 1861-65. Guerilla armies, privately financed by Northern industrialists and Southern plantation owners, were fighting for control of the territory. The Lawrence family of Massachusetts textile factory magnates, who mid 19th century had financed the construction of Lawrence 'Immigrant City', Mass, would also finance the construction of it's infamous sister city, the 'abolition' center of Lawrence, Kansas at about the same time. The Lawrence's didn't much like paying the highly expensive and inefficient chattel slave costs which picked the cotton which in turn fed their Northern New England mills.

[The Irish, starving to death as they were in many instances in 1847, didn't appreciate their enmasse predation as wage slaves for such work in US factories, and saw it As genocidal. As documented by the Spectator of London (linked below) they didn't call this predation a 'helping hand', but instead called it 'extermination'. Members of the British aristocracy in Ireland were being shot for paying the way of Irish to go to the US for this purpose.

An ulterior motive for flooding China with opium and then crushing them twice for having the temerity to resist, may well have been to 'open up' China's huge population to predation as a 'mother lode' of wage slavery. At the start of the US Civil War in 1861 tens of thousands of Chinese had been 'imported' by diktat into the US state of California (the 'back door') as so called 'cheap labor'. If so, the plan ultimately fell thru by the end of the 19th century, but not for lack of trying.]

'..a question of dollars and cents..'

'Our Southern States, being still in the agricultural stage, on account of our practical monopoly of the world's chief textile staple, were the last of the great civilized nations to find chattel slavery less profitable than wage slavery, and hence the "great moral crusade" of the North against the perverse and unregenerate South.

It was a pure case of economic determinism, which means that our great moral conflict reduces itself, in the last analysis, to a question of dollars and cents, though the real issue was so obscured by other considerations that we of the South honestly believe to this day that we were fighting for States Rights, while the North is equally honest in the conviction that it was engaged in a magnanimous struggle to free the slave.'

Exactly. Those immigrants cost far less, and did far more. They earned their keep. They paid for their own food, clothes, and housing. If one ran away, good riddance. Others lined up to replace him.

Then the Northerners discovered they could protect their ill-gotten gains even further by paying off their increasing share of Congress (increasing thanks to the aforesaid immigration)

To counteract the bogus increase in share of Congress thanks to 17th-century immigration. Gouverneur Morris said the houses of Philadelphia were worth more than all the Congoloids in the South. But three-fifths of those houses weren’t given seats in Congress.

I am a native of Joliet, IL, currently living in Lake County, IL. I know my way around Chicago pretty well and have been in and around Lincoln Park numerous times. I had no clue there was a statue of Lincoln there. In fact, of the 40 monuments and plaques on the list, the only ones I have actually seen and registered are the sculptures by Meštrović. I wonder how many Chicagoans have seen these monuments or even know where they are located.

I had better pay attention now to what is going on in Joliet. They may change the city's name and I'll drive by it the next time I go to visit family.

No, it was because the Northerners discovered they could import destitute immigrants who were even cheaper than slaves, since they didn't have to be purchased, fed, clothed, and housed, among other things.

Just a couple examples off the top of my head, mind you. There are more.

No less than two people representing the highest echelons of Anglo-Saxon society in the North and South during the US Civil War of 1861-1865 would agree with your assessment.

Eliza Andrews, whose father was one of the self described ‘privileged 4000’ who ruled over the US South as he owned over a hundred slaves, wrote the quote below in 1908 about the actual root cause of the US Civil War. According to her it was that the South’s chattel slave system was simply ‘less profitable’ than the Norths wage slavery (ie specifically the so called ‘cheap labor’/’mass immigration’ system).

Saying the very same thing in pure numbers, Robert J Walker, a former slave speculator, US Treasurer, and governor of Bleeding Kansas circa 1857, and in 1863 the financial representative of the Lincoln administration in London, taking numerous variables into account, effectively calculated that wage slave (‘cheap labor’ so called) dependent Massachusetts was four times more productive than the corresponding chattel slave dependent South Carolina.

He published these figures in a ‘Why we fight’ type of an article (one of a series he wrote) for Northern consumption in 1864. (See ‘comments’ link below for the original source link of those calculations.)

Relatedly, speaking of 1850’s ‘Bleeding Kansas’, it’s long been seen as a micro-cosm of the coming US Civil War of 1861-65. Guerilla armies, privately financed by Northern industrialists and Southern plantation owners, were fighting for control of the territory. The Lawrence family of Massachusetts textile factory magnates, who mid 19th century had financed the construction of Lawrence ‘Immigrant City’, Mass, would also finance the construction of it’s infamous sister city, the ‘abolition’ center of Lawrence, Kansas at about the same time. The Lawrence’s didn’t much like paying the highly expensive and inefficient chattel slave costs which picked the cotton which in turn fed their Northern New England mills.

[The Irish, starving to death as they were in many instances in 1847, didn’t appreciate their enmasse predation as wage slaves for such work in US factories, and saw it As genocidal. As documented by the Spectator of London (linked below) they didn’t call this predation a ‘helping hand’, but instead called it ‘extermination’. Members of the British aristocracy in Ireland were being shot for paying the way of Irish to go to the US for this purpose.

An ulterior motive for flooding China with opium and then crushing them twice for having the temerity to resist, may well have been to ‘open up’ China’s huge population to predation as a ‘mother lode’ of wage slavery. At the start of the US Civil War in 1861 tens of thousands of Chinese had been ‘imported’ by diktat into the US state of California (the ‘back door’) as so called ‘cheap labor’. If so, the plan ultimately fell thru by the end of the 19th century, but not for lack of trying.]

‘..a question of dollars and cents..’

‘Our Southern States, being still in the agricultural stage, on account of our practical monopoly of the world’s chief textile staple, were the last of the great civilized nations to find chattel slavery less profitable than wage slavery, and hence the “great moral crusade” of the North against the perverse and unregenerate South.

It was a pure case of economic determinism, which means that our great moral conflict reduces itself, in the last analysis, to a question of dollars and cents, though the real issue was so obscured by other considerations that we of the South honestly believe to this day that we were fighting for States Rights, while the North is equally honest in the conviction that it was engaged in a magnanimous struggle to free the slave.’

Lincoln can go. I've learned enough about him to despise him. I've always thought the main reason why he called for troops to invade the South was as an outlet for his aggression because of his bad marriage.

But Lincoln couldn't admit to himself that he had made a horrible mistake, so he projected his anger and hostility elsewhere. Mary symbolized the South for him, which is why he had to attack it.

This supposedly humane man killed a lot of decent white people, both North and South, who were never slave owners.

Wife beating was legal in those days, nay mandatory. Why didn’t superman Lincoln avail himself of his right as a husband to correct his wife’s henpecking?

Roberto Clemente hit the only game-winning walk-off (or, to be precise, run-off) grand slam in baseball history on July 25, 1956 to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 9-8 win over the Chicago Cubs:

    https://lithub.com/the-greatest-forgotten-home-run-of-all-time/

This was with no outs, so the ultimate baseball ending, a Kirk Gibson-style 2 out, 3-2 pitch game-winning inside the park grand slam has yet to happen.

Here's a 2013 video of an inside the park run-off homer by Angel Pagan for the San Francisco Giants in their beautiful ballpark:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SjFx0h-v5M

Clemente ran through the third base coach's stop sign but the manager didn't impose the usual $25 fine.

Clemente was a pretty bad baserunner, only 83 out of 129 for his career at stealing bases.
