I’m glad you posted this so quickly. I can’t see anything, but I have been sitting here listening to three hours of mayhem, mostly sirens. I don’t ever recall hearing an emergency response like this, and I have never lived anywhere except the cities a lot of people on here hate the most, from some of the comments. A reminder that these expensive stores catered mostly to tourists. Most recently they appear to be catering to the rap-music crowd. Quite a few residents here never shop at these stores. Many property owners in this area are absentees.

The Democrats have used COVID-19 to, among other things, set up a succession crisis after the 2019 Presidential elections. The Democrats are the urban coalition, and the cities desperately need money. Politicians and managers have a bad tendency to think that, if only they had complete information and control, they could make things work. As a researcher in automated systems and the application of systems thinking to human organizations, I can say that the managers/politicians are wrong. It is their lack of complete control that permits the system they manage to function at all. Many processes need rapid response to local conditions. A system of complete control by managers/politicians means delayed decisions made without adequate information or familiarity with time critical processes. In other words, Maoist/Stalinist/USSR/UK/US catastrophes. Free nations really do better than authoritarian nations, provided that the free nations have populations that want to produce rather than take. That’s right out of Locke and history both. Therefore: A succession crisis followed by an urban dominated government will be unable to glean enough resources to make urban areas governable.

Looks like we’re in for a rough ride, starting with the 2020 US elections / succession crisis. I suspect that it will later be seen as no worse than the re-organization of the USSR into the RF — an unusually rough Kondratiev Winter (*), no more. After that, yet another cycle of economic expansion, this one probably based on the new capabilities of present day startup startup firms. With any luck this K Winter won’t even have another world war. It appears that the cycle of urban dominance we’ve just been through (**) has destroyed the autarky that the various empires needed to fight World War I and II. And, of course, nuclear weapons make central wars (***) very dangerous indeed.

Have the DOJ impanel a grand jury tasked to find out why police protection was withheld from neighborhoods, people in need. There must be a constitutional violation committed when a mayor denies police protection to citizens.

I saw a tweet from either a New York News or Post reporter who said law enforcement told him that the New York looting was done by gangs. I saw on internet at the time that was bad and it was multiple Manhattan neighborhoods and some of the cars had out of state plates. Given how many people were involved and the speed and efficiency they cleaned out stores, that makes sense to me. In New York on Twitter a lot of people commented on the expensive cars that were used.

I am not in New York or Chicago so I am not the expert on this. But I am assuming gangs were primarily responsible for what happened in Chicago too. It is disconcerting to say the least to know there is a reserve Army of people in America who are able and willing to come out with no advance notice and target our biggest stores and suck out everything from the smaller ones. This tells me nobody even knows what is happening in the shadows in our own country. We are all just sitting ducks really. When are we ever going to go after the gangs?

I gotta say that NY, while being tax and spend, was actually fairly balanced at the State level. The pension is much better funded than NJ, for example (although that’s not the State’s budget). New York, for whatever Cuomo and DeBlasio’s faults in dealing with Covid (and it seems people want it both ways, that they acted too slowly, but were also too draconian), and well, anything else, one should acknowedge a bit of this is a bit the nature of the beast. It’s a packed city, massive subway system, lots of international and national travel through it. The Feds ARE giving trilions not just “to the people” but also to corporations.

I know a lot of people will just say good riddance to the blue cities. But I don’t see why they should just be ceded or allowed to melt down. And for years NY has been a net contributor to the feds (ok, so just feeding a different beast).

Agree, that’s their plan. Won’t work this time. 2020 is the year when the money runs out, securities can’t be sold at a low interest rated, the resources bought with the money raised will be inadequate, the money used will be spent on political disputes rather than what’s needed physically.
