Human Diversity: The Biology of Gender, Race, and Class

Hardcover or Kindle – January 28, 2020
by Charles Murray

Kindle $16.99

Hardcover $35.00

All people are equal but, as Human Diversity explores, all groups of people are not the same — a fascinating investigation of the genetics and neuroscience of human differences.

The thesis of Human Diversity is that advances in genetics and neuroscience are overthrowing an intellectual orthodoxy that has ruled the social sciences for decades. The core of the orthodoxy consists of three dogmas:

– Gender is a social construct.

– Race is a social construct.

– Class is a function of privilege.

The problem is that all three dogmas are half-truths. They have stifled progress in understanding the rich texture that biology adds to our understanding of the social, political, and economic worlds we live in.

It is not a story to be feared. “There are no monsters in the closet,” Murray writes, “no dread doors we must fear opening.” But it is a story that needs telling. Human Diversity does so without sensationalism, drawing on the most authoritative scientific findings, celebrating both our many differences and our common humanity.

I generally find these types of books tiresome because the absurd amount of qualifications.

I really don’t see the point in putting in more than one. I suppose you need one qualification to get published, but putting in any more won’t prevent you and your book from being denounced.

Or, perhaps, a certain number will allow you to attend social dinners?

  2. IHTG says:
    @songbird

    You have to keep pushing.

  3. Someone, sometime, is going to point out that we’re not going to lynch blacks for being inferior. Only when it’s ‘safe’, will the powers that be allow discussion of race realism. Only when, perhaps, there’s a less value-laden way to frame it (actually, it must ultimately be value laden – after all it’s inescapably about life success, and means hurt feelings even if no material disadvantages were to result). Well anyway we’ll see how much progress Murray makes in getting us to that day, it sounds like what he’s trying for.

    “The absurd amount of qualifications”

Sort of like with biographies of Hitler. “And then really bad, evil Hitler shockingly ….” “Completely talentless Hitler spent the year in Vienna paying the rent selling absolutely terrible paintings to gullible tourists who had no artistic taste whatsoever….”

I think there’d be a market for a book entitled, “Hitler: An Adjective and Adverb-Free Life.”

  6. SFG says:

I’m curious to see if he backs up or doubles down.

Maybe he’s going to try to recover his respectability, or maybe he sees the end approaching and figures he’s got nothing to lose. Wade only dared to talk truth when his career was over. I hope Murray’s just hit his FIRE number.

  7. Anonymous[192] • Disclaimer says:

No one believes ‘gender is a social construct’.

If so, how come homos are born homo?
And how come trannies are BIOLOGICALLY PROGRAMMED to be the OTHER ‘gender’?

And if progs really believe all races are the same or that race is just fake, why do they worship blacks over others and favor Jews over Arabs/Palestinians?

Idolatry of power, not ideology of equality, dominates the discourse.

Jews win in money, blacks win in sports. That why they get special attention.

I finished David Reich’s Who We Are and How We Got Here last week. During the last chapters of an otherwise fascinating book he insists, over and over, that we musn’t use the information in the previous chapters to be like Hitler. OK, I don’t think anyone wants a leader who gets his country fire bombed, raped and pillaged. He doesn’t mention the backlash to the Third Reich.

I wonder if Murray has avoided that, or at least, not been so preachy and self-serving (for academic status). Garden variety Christianity and understanding that an individual is not the group would help.

Anyways… bought the audio on it.

“Someone, sometime, is going to point out that we’re not going to lynch blacks for being inferior.”

Or send them to the back of the bus. Or refuse them a seat at the lunch counter. Or a drink at the water fountain etc., etc., etc. Murray’s negative reputation among The Sainted and Virtuous and the rest of the progressive Waffen SS, however, is something to watch out for. I wish him luck. In any case, good post.

  12. Gender is a social construct.

Specifically, it’s a linguistic construct. It doesn’t exist in the real world, like, oh, say… sex. Unique in Indo-European, save for creoles like Afrikaans, English has no gender, except with pronouns.

I wonder how Murray treats the abuse of this word. He’d better discuss it, and in the early pages.

Wayne Allensworth recounted how, when he sent his manuscript about Russia to his publisher, some lowly copy editor or proofreader changed all the instances of she and her (in reference to countries, like Russia) to it and its. Talk about “class”, doing that exhibits a total lack.

Look at the frothing at mouth reactions to the David Reich and the Robert Plomin books, no amount of qualification will make any difference anymore.

  14. It was somewhat clever to title the book “Human Diversity.” Because, as everyone knows, diversity is our strength and is very very real and good.

The subtitle also slyly uses the word “biology” instead of “genetics.”

So he’s off to a good start in packaging HBD reality in a way that can’t be completely dismissed out of hand by the PC police.

If there’s any genetic component, then the gap can’t be closed (without genetic engineering, the technology for which does not exist right now, or selective breeding, which would take a very long time). That’s kind of a hard pill to swallow for blacks (even poor John McWhorter couldn’t swallow it- https://www.nationalreview.com/2017/07/race-iq-debate-serves-no-purpose/), and would remove a lot of the reason for white liberals to endlessly self-flagellate over this stuff and, thus, for the liberal wing of the Democratic Party to exist. It would also threaten the sinecures of the whole affirmative action class.

Charles Murray wrote also on twitter about proof-reading his forthcoming book with a tool to optimize this nerve-eating process. This tool he developed and produced all by himself (with scissors and a piece of cardboard and some glue, I guess). I’ll read this new book.
All in all, this is one of the most interesting stories of our time, and all happy enough to know of iSteve and unz.com are able to see quite a lot of the chapters in this story unfolding in real-time, so to speak.

Honestly, give it 2 months and I am sure reviews and papers will come out “debunking it” again.

Unfortunately, many really do not like to think of biology and human behavior together. After Wade’s book was published, there were so many academic papers emphasizing admixture/gene flow etc and discrediting race.

  46. @The Cruncher

Someone, sometime, is going to point out that we’re not going to lynch blacks for being inferior. Only when it’s ‘safe’, will the powers that be allow discussion of race realism.

Any honest belief in any minority’s safety isn’t really what’s going on here.

I think the critical points–alluded to respectively by Prester John and SFG–

    1) Virtue signaling.
This stuff is a lefty religion. For Jews that the gentile barabarians with their pitchforks are every ready to swoop down and are only held off by the Jews wise and heroic anti-racist, anti-populist, anti-nationalist efforts … is who they are. For the post-Christian gentiles this attitude–dovetailing with class biases about the ignorant masses–has been adopted. For both, their own virtue and superiority–and their right to order us about–is deeply tired to their thinking correct, pure, virtuous thoughts and the idea that evil, racist, bad-thought-thinking white men are about to unleash genoicide.

    2) Power
Huge super-state infrastructue is “justified” by the blank slate narrative and blaming white men for various inequities–“gaps”–which must be ameliorated. And the entire coaliation of America’s super-state party–the Democrats–is dependent on both these super-state programs–bureaucrats, grantees, regulatory, legal, welfare, etc.–and the “oppressive whitey” narrative supporting them.

I don’t know how much money you’ve got to blow on this sort of thing, but there’s a case for buying a copy, multiple if practical, and soon after publication so the publishers notice.

If the book is a bestseller, publishers start to get the idea controversial books on the topic are moneymakers. If that’s the case, more right-leaning publishers (Regnery, etc.) are going to toy with the idea of publishing more ‘controversial books’, and the ideas get out.

I bought a copy of A Troublesome Inheritance for just this reason.

The Pizzagate gunman who fired more than once after sending families fleeing by brandishing an AR15 and pointing it at a Ping Pong restaurant employee, was after his arrest, photographed standing at the scene talking to cops with his hands on his hips. They had uncuffed the crazy man who happened to be white, but I am sure a twenty something black arrested after firing an AK47 would have received the same consideration. NOT. Fact is, African Americans are treated significantly worse by cops because the police are never entirely unafraid of young blacks. You hate what you fear.

White men are behind blaming ‘white men’. Virtue is a class thing. The lower classes have lower intelligence and are relatively depraved. American transcendentalism was an indigenous culture of critique as Kevin MacDonald noted, but the descendants of the New England Puritans were objectively superior in every way, that is why their cause won the Civil war.

Any advanced society has beliefs and ethics not suceptable to logical refutation, and tempting as it is to think if those myths could be disproved the society would be better, history (Ancient Greece) shows logic and scientific epistemology are more likely to dissolve communal bonds than any myth. Being objectively correct about HND ranking by IQ is usually an indication one is a relatively sub par iteration of it. The prophet of a new society overthrows its taboos and myths only to substitute new rationalistic one, ones as Mohammed did for the Arabs, and Mustafa Kemal’ did for the Turks. Someone better left unmentioned in an attempt to transform Germany into what he called the American Union too.

Huge super-state infrastructure is “justified” by the blank slate narrative and blaming white men for various inequities–“gaps”–which must be ameliorated.

No the state is infrastructure for keeping other people from dominating a nation. A nation state can never be too strong against foreign enemies, and the domestic ones that want to capitulate. Strong myths are therefore necessary.

  51. Will Angela Saini organise a bookburning of this?

One thing I’ve come to learn is that evidence doesn’t really matter much in these debates. If it isn’t convenient, it just gets demonised. “Gender as a social construct” is a perfect example of that. That’s why I do not think these books advance the conversation.

Murray’s insistance that “no dread doors we must fear opening” is also patently absurd. If the conventional narrative gets overturned then many of the current groups of people who have gained their places because of affirmative action and similar policies have a LOT to lose and are very rational in fearing change.

  52. Tulip says:

Just remember, Charles Murray spews “white nationalist talking points”, his statements are not coherent arguments based on empirical facts.

When he cites empirical research, make sure to advise the reader that it is “discredited pseudo-science” and talk about Rushton’s scandals, and funding derived from “white supremacist think tank” the Pioneer Fund. Make sure 2/3rds of the review talks about Nazis and KKK and race science scandals, with less than a 1/3rd addressing anything in the book.

End with the rhetorical question: why would anyone spew this vile garbage unless they just wanted to start the next Holocaust?

I just hope someone will pay me to write the review. I can do it already, not having read the book, and the point of my review would be to discourage others from reading the book, and stigmatize those caught reading it as pro-genocide Nazis-by-proxy.

    Charles Murray will not recant.

He is exceedingly careful to speak accurately and he is exceedingly eloquent.

The lies cannot stand forever. We are about to hand over the greatest debt in history to peoples that cannot not service these debts. If they cannot service the debts then they will not service the debts. At that point surely, the narrative will be properly shattered.

Meanwhile, Charles’ Murray’s job is to share what he knows and he will do that.

It is brave in one sense but not very brave compared to those who faced death for speaking the truth. It is however brave in our era of incredible cowardice where almost nobody with F-you money says anything interesting.

  59. DaninMD says:

HBD truth is the purest heresy in our world.

    Why?

The religion of our modern world is “progress.” (Don’t believe me? Look at how the giants of the world, people like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, console themselves sans religion. They embrace in almost a childlike way the progress of humanity and it has become the gospel which they share to lift up their fellow travelers who lose faith.)

But when you combine HBD truth with demographic trends you see that we most assuredly will not have progress.

If progress fails, you will have total existential horror on the part of all modern people who have cast aside traditional religion, as their replacement religion, progress, fails utterly.

A lot of Murray’s excellent _Coming Apart_ is about the impact of the white lower class losing those norms.
