From the Huffington Post:

Race And Ideology Take Center Stage In Scramble To Succeed Kamala Harris

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is under pressure to appoint either a Black woman, a Latino or a member of the LGBTQ community.

By Daniel Marans

When Kamala Harris assumes her historic role as the first woman and nonwhite vice president in January, she will be vacating one of California’s two U.S. Senate seats.

It is now up to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a first-term Democrat, to decide whether to call a special election or choose a replacement to serve out the remainder of Harris’ term, which is slated to end in 2022.

Newsom has been tight-lipped about his plans, but the conventional wisdom among Golden State politics watchers is that Newsom will appoint a replacement rather than delay the arrival of a new Democratic senator with an expensive special election. And Newsom’s allies have made clear that he does not plan to name a white man to the seat.

As a result, activists and various progressive groups began a campaign to sway Newsom months before the election, and that has intensified in recent days. The jockeying is intense because whoever gains control of the seat — and runs for election as an incumbent in two years — is likely to control the influential and safely Democratic post for decades to come.

Three main camps and their subgroups are trying to influence Newsom: Those advocating for a Black woman; those advocating for a Latino; and those advocating for a member of the LGBT community.

Black activists and progressive groups insist that Newsom name a Black woman to replace Harris, only the second Black woman to serve in the Senate.

Black Americans make up about 13% of the population but occupy just two of 100 Senate seats. Both of them ― New Jersey Democrat Sen. Cory Booker and South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott ― are men.

But blacks are only half as abundant in California as nationwide, so black women only make up 3% of the California population.

In contrast, Latinos make up 39.4% of California’s residents.

Another issue is that California is somewhat lacking, despite its huge population, in Democratic Party talent. There is no obvious successor who could be assumed to have inevitably gotten to the Senate with or without Newsom’s boost. So, wings of the Democratic Party not blessed by Newsom would resent his skipping over them.

Some say the smart thing for Newsom to do rather than to appoint a mid-career individual who would likely be in the Senate for decades, due to California being a one-party state, thus alienating the rest of the Democrats’ Coalition of the Fringes, would be to appoint a senior statesperson to the US senate to fill out Kamala Harris’s two years, and then let the voters in the 2022 primary determine the long-term occupant.

Newsom might pick a Democratic Party elder with a long track record of successful deal-making to succeed Kamala, but extract a promise publicly not to run in 2022.

The most obvious such senior statesman is the former California assembly speaker for a record 14 years and mayor of San Francisco, Willie Brown.

I have no significant contact with any California Hispanics, but I’ve got to think they are seething with resentment that the power elite puts such disproportionate focus on blacks (6% of the CA population) and gays (1%?) and transes (0.001%?) instead of them (39%). I hope Newsom appoints a normal Mexican American man who is married and has a few children.

I don’t know what’s politically possible in California anymore, but if Newsome appoints a young fully woke black gay etc, would there be any chance for a populist Hispanic Republican to beat them in a general election? Of course it would be tough to buck the Silicon Valley oligarchs in California, so how they approached the H1B issue would be a challenge.

This stuff is why everyone on the DR should get involved with BLM. Point out to the membership that Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Apple, Nike, Wal-Mart, Google, Facebook, and Twitter all have lots and lots of money and power … that rightfully belong to black people.

Help them demand that Jack Dorsey step down and hand over his ownership to … Ibrahim X. Kendi. Kendi Xirself would be on board with that. Demand that Bill Gates hand over his money to … BLM! That Wal-Mart’s executive team be entirely replaced with … the surviving members of the Wu-Tang Clan. Make sure that Apple, Nike, and Google replace ALL their executive teams, every single one, with black people. Tim Cook should be replaced by genius Cardi B. Sundar Pinchai is not cutting it, Jay-Z needs to run Google. This is what we need to do. Get involved with BLM now!

And really, it is lot easier to seize money and power and stuff from a few White billionaires than it is from 100 million Whites. It would be a great day for humanity to see the Gates family stripped of all their wealth and asking if people want fries with that.

The best choice would be the most qualified person, ha ha, just kidding.

A sitting Senator is always a potential political competitor to the governor. The Senator may run for governor at some point, or block the governor from moving into the Senate if he gets term-limited or needs to change jobs. The Senator may also take up the spot of the state’s “favorite son” in a presidential run or compete for donors.

For all these reasons, one group always gets the most preferential treatment when a governor is called upon to name a Senator in his own state. This group, in fact, is massively overrepresented in these choices.

The group I am referring to, of course, is: untalented, uncharismatic, unattractive, mediocre-Americans.

I boldly predict Newsome’s pick will be a member of this group. Antonio Villaraigosa certainly fits this demographic. But it would be dangerous for Newsome to elevate even a mediocre Hispanic to statewide office. A repulsive black lesbian would be ideal.

  28. … either a Black woman, a Latino or a member of the LGBTQ community.

And those groups hate each other.

On the other hand, Whites, like the “ethnics” up North (Italians, Irish, Polish, etc.) along with White Southerners, and Whites who live in rural and most suburban areas all over the country, make up the largest group of voters who will vote as a block. Trump showed that.

Also, the squishy Whites who are always looking to betray us for personal gain will nonetheless vote with the White block in time. Ironically, this will accelerate when they are unable to protect themselves from the “diversity” they impose on others. Quakers had a prissy lack of loyalty to other Whites who were fighting Indians. Except when their lily White asses were attacked.

I don’t know where the anti-White liberal Jews or the New England Puritans White descendants will wind up. Nor would I care, except they can be intelligent and hardworking when it comes to harming White people. But they may be passing their political zenith.

If we had a true multiparty political system, the Great White Voting Block would be most dominant. How we get multiple parties, I don’t know.

Not a religious man, but I will pray Newsome appoints a black woman or a black queer, trannie, whatever.

Republicans should get off their ass and for once act like they want to win. I.e. take Steve’s advice.

    McConnell should tweet something like:

“Blacks are the moral soul of the Democratic party. Democrats would be completely uncompetitive in national governance without the overwhelming support of Blacks. It would be the height of disrespect to Black Americans, if the aftermath of Kamala Harris’ historic election, Governor Newsome would destroy Black women’s only representation in the United States Senate.”

And, of course, if Newsome is stupid enough to appoint a black or LGBTQWERTY the Republicans should find a solid Trumpist Latino businessman/family man and run him in 2022.

Republicans should continually talk up the debt Democrats owe to blacks … and demand that debt be paid by white Democrats stepping aside and letting blacks lead for once. Republicans should continually point out that it is illegitimate for white men to represent the Democratic party. They should refuse to work with white Democrats.

They should point out that “old white man Biden lives off of the votes of Black Americans like a Southern plantation owner lived off the labor of black slaves.” And call for “old white man” Biden to resign in favor of Kamala Harris.

I think it has to be a Hispanic. Villaraigosa is probably not whom Newsome would want to cede a lifetime seat to, and I don’t know who else there is. Maybe Becerra, though he might not want to leave his prime perch as AG and presumably the next governor.

Maybe some Hollywood type that Newsom wants to give a favor too to kick-start a political career, like George Clooney or Oprah? Though now that Trump has broken the glass ceiling of a celebrity with no prior elected office being able to get elected president, maybe these types won’t think it’s worth the headache.

    Lockean Proviso asked:

I don’t know what’s politically possible in California anymore, but if Newsome appoints a young fully woke black gay etc, would there be any chance for a populist Hispanic Republican to beat them in a general election?

Orange County, south of LA, used to be ultra-conservative — John Birch Society sort of conservative. In recent decades, it has become purple and even slightly blue. But Orange County just elected two GOP female Korean-Americans to Congress.

The woke Whites in California are so numerous that this is the only real hope for the CA GOP. We actually defeated an attempt on November 3 to restore Affirmative Action state-wide thanks to opposition from Asians and Hispanics. The state GOP has no choice but to appeal to Asians, decent Hispanics, and what remains of sane Whites.

This reinforces Derb’s “Polar Alliance”/”Ice People” strategy: people of European descent had better ally themselves with Northeast Asians… if they do not want to disappear. And, as a Hispanic friend of mine points out, in principle Hispanics are also heirs to Catholic-European culture.

In any case, in CA there is no choice: Anglo-White dominance is not in the cards long term, especially given that the leading Anglo-Whites are totally insane SJWs.

Eliminating the age of consent is an obvious point (not the endpoint) on the trail of individualism. The very existence of age of consent laws is an individualist, liberal invention. Remember that consent and marriage used to be one in the same. All sex outside of marriage was illegal. And the concept of “spousal rape” didn’t even exist as a legal concept until 1970. “Consent” was permanently given one time, in public, in front of your friends and family in a traditional ceremony called a “wedding.” But the last 50/60/70/however many years have completely undone traditional conceptions of sex.

Why exactly should an 18 year old just be able to go out and have sex with whomever he or she (especially a she) wants? Even most “conservatives” don’t have any real argument against this.

Once almost everyone has conceded that an 18 year old should be able to legally choose to get gang banged, there is no logical reason to not let a 17 year old do it, or a 16 year old, or a 14 year old, or a 12 year old, etc. There isn’t an age at which someone magically becomes able to make wise choices. If consent is all that matters, and consent is untethered from marriage and community, then the common refrain of “children can’t consent to sex” (often used by leftists when you suggest their agenda is leading to open pedarasty) becomes seen as the flimsy joke of an excuse that it is.

NO ONE can meaningfully consent to sex outside of marriage.

I would replace age of consent with laws banning all sex outside of marriage. Needless to say, I would define “marriage” as between a biological man and a biological woman.

As for the age someone was allowed to get married, I would leave it up to the father or patriarch, although with the exception of prepubescent marriages (ew).

If Newsom considers himself presidential material the nominee will either be Jewish or black. Ultimately it was the black vote that put Biden over the top for the presidential nomination. But California isn’t as black as the rest of the country, and Newsom doesn’t seem like the kind of white guy blacks would be very fond of, anyway. Nominating a black isn’t going to make them like him.

OTOH, Jews are the real power in the Democratic Party, and they reward people who advance their own. Most of Biden’s top donors were Jewish, and Biden’s administration is already shaping up to be perhaps the most Jewish administration in history. He’s only announced a handful of cabinet picks so far but already two of them are Jewish (Yellen and Mayorkas) as is his chief of staff.

Do you think blacks will be satisfied with a single U.S. Senate seat, being filled by Maxine Waters, and would urge Governor Newsom to appoint a representative of some other deserving minority group, like Hispanics or Asians? Not a chance: they’ll be clamoring for him to appoint U.S. Rep. Karen Bass, so both of the state’s Senators will be black.

For my two cents, I think Newsom will appoint a rich Democratic donor who ticks at least one of the fashionable minority boxes, but someone who reflects where the real power is in the Democratic Party. Someone like David Geffen.

Maybe the Republicans could make hay out of this in other states (Pelosi is an attack ad favorite) but California itself is now effectively a one party state. The Dems could run Ru Paul in full drag and the Republicans could run a fantastic Latino family man/businessman/war hero/movie star and it wouldn’t change the outcome of the election. The last time a Republican won a Senate election for an open seat in California was in 1982, 38 years ago.

What happens in one party states is that politics doesn’t end but is moved to the inter party faction level. Right now in the incoming Biden Administration there is a big fight going on between “moderates” and “progressives”. I don’t believe in the worse the better or “increasing the contradictions”. I don’t believe in the worse the better or “increasing the contradictions”. It’s better for our country if Biden and Newsom appoint moderate Democrats and not raging Leftists, competent people rather than incompetents. The better the better.

    I want the “contradiction” increased.

In fact, to put my finger on the political problem it is precisely that there are large numbers of nominally sane–in their personal life–people who vote for Democrats and think all their minoritarian nuttery is “just the fringe” or “not important” and they are really the party of “experts” or “science” or something. Very basic logical concepts like “if you do not want to enforce the border you are for open borders” elude them.

These people need to get it good and hard. They need Kamala announcing she uses she/her pronouns and railing against white racism and lynching. They need the gender-confused purple haired harpies and incompetent black grifters blathering and making policy. They need that … and they need it in their faces 24-7-365.

The truth is your desired “moderation” buys absolutely nothing. Those “moderates” buy you nothing. The alpha and omega of America’s future will be driven by immigration–whether we can turn it around by tossing off minoritarianism for a healthy nationalist resurgence. And on immigration those “moderates” are not moderate at all but looney genocidal extremists cheering on this insane anti-logical “nation of immigrants” national destruction–a path no nation/civilization in history has every voluntarily embarked upon, because it’s so openly self-destructive.

No … moderates suck. We must cheer on the crazy. Let’s have the crazies now and in full force, and the American people will either react–if our immune system has any swag left in it–or we’ll know America is utterly doomed … and i can actively search for how/where to decamp my children.

This really needs to be driven home to people. The centre of the political spectrum keeps shifting to the left, so what is now a moderate would have been a lunatic extremist a generation ago. Most people can’t see this shift, and equate “moderate” with “reasonable”. In most white countries, it now means someone who wants immigration and social change to continue at their present pace – in other words, a nation-wrecker.

The Democrats explicitly took the fork in the road to go black. It’s a mistake to treat immigration as the biggest threat.

No, the Left really should not be “electing a new people,” to steal Bertold Brecht’s phrase.

But the non-Asian minorities are not the biggest problem.

The biggest problem, the true psychotics, are the Woke Whites.

How many Black folks, how many Hispanics, really believe that a guy who starts wearing dresses is now really a woman? How many Blacks or Hispanics want the schools and Social Services to chemically castrate their ten-year-old because he whimsically says he wishes he were a girl? How many Blacks or Hispanics are comfortable with the “homeless” taking over the sidewalks in their neighborhoods?

For that matter, unlimited immigration does far more harm economically to Blacks and to legal Hispanic immigrants than it does to most Whites.

The Woke Whites are “hostes humani generis,” enemies of the human race, enemies of all normal humans of whatever ethnicity, both here in the USA, and in the other Western industrialized countries, and throughout the world.

If we can stop the Woke Whites, the human race can have a decent future.

If not… well, for the next several centuries:

If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face – forever.

Think of it as “Corvinus’ boot”: we may laugh at Corvy, but his people now have the power.

And to defeat the Woke Whites, we need to look at the social structures that created them: the public schools, the regulatory state, the universities, the Big Medicine complex, the banking/finance cartel, the National-Security State, and all the rest.

Until there is a broad awareness of and an organized determination to annihilate the institutional bases of the Woke Whites, they will continue to dominate the world.

It took them over a century to create this Hell. Turning things around will not happen overnight.

The good news is that awareness is starting to spread. We are at the beginning, the very beginning, of the true resistance movement.

This is the Unz Sailer commenter version of The Onion.

I have never heard of any major (or minor) religion advocating this standard.

Until a few hundred years ago (at least in Europe) marriage was informal and merely declaratory other than for the rich. Even long after. It still is in most of the world. Some places of course where women were family property, the bride price had to be paid. That applied only to somewhat rich families. Still happens.

This entire ridiculous post almost sounds like 3rd Wave Feminism “all sex is rape” baloney. Or maybe “Swedish rape” Julian Assange style.

The majority of children in the entire history of the world (and even now) were born to parents not “legally married.” Get over it.

The age of consent issue is different. That varies considerably. Even in the US it can be as low as 15. Females have been getting pregnant as soon as they hit puberty since mankind existed. Not necessarily everyone of course. Until about 1960 no safe, reliable birth control existed.

Of course if AndrewR has zero knowledge of human biology or history, there is little point in arguing. The earth isn’t flat either, Andrew.

Until a few hundred years ago (at least in Europe) marriage was informal and merely declaratory other than for the rich. Even long after. It still is in most of the world.

Informal? Not having “civil marriage” or legal paperwork does not make marriage “informal”.

Marriage is one of the seven sacraments of the Church. And in every civilized culture on the planet, sexuality is highly regulated and marriage is the most important community celebration. Various and elaborate rituals abound, because every civilized society understands it’s deep importance. Sexual coupling is where babies come from … and ergo the humans that are the future of the civilization!

Marriage–the regulation of sex to one per customer monogamy–is the bedrock of civilization.

My one sentence definition of civilization:

Civilization is men agreeing to one-per-customer monogamy, allowing them to stop devoting resources to fighting and mate guarding, but instead to cooperate for mutual defense and devote their time to productive activity, including having the assigned responsibility for the provision and skill development of their children, to be able to carry the civilization forward.

We are the descendants of the inventors of marriage, because once marriage was invented, tribes with marriage had much, much greater male cooperation and trust and tended to wipe out the tribes without it (with sloppy chimpanzee sexual mores). Likewise with settlement civilizations that had strongly institutionalized marriage could have more cooperative and productive men and tended to defeat and simply out produce those with weaker/sloppier sexual mores.

You see this around the world. The civilized and most successful societies had strong marriage mores (constraints on sexual behavior). Places were marriage was more “informal” were weaker backwaters. Where sexual mores are sloppy–Africa–you end up with only matrilineal families, low trust among men and very little male productive effort–no progress at all.

It is only with our ridiculous modern prosperity, that we in the West can afford sloppy sexual mores. The Pill allows lots of sloppy unproductive sex. And we can have 40% illegitimacy, because we are rich, have a welfare state and a legal system to garnish wages from fathers. But this won’t last. We’ve adopted sloppy African style sexual mores … and as a result are slowly slumping toward a more African level of civilization.

Everyone–everyone–ought to thoroughly understand all of this. We barrage kids in school with all sorts of names and dates–the rise and fall of this or that civilization. But we don’t bother to explain the very basics of how civilization works or even came to be. We have kids, even college grads, even iSteve commenters who don’t understand what civilization is.

Marriage–the regulation of sex to one per customer monogamy–is the bedrock of civilization.

Only if you see civilization as synonymous with Rome and later Christianity. Christian Europe with it policy of one wife per husband was more the exception rather than the rule (and an exception that was often honored in the breach – kings and nobles often had mistresses in addition to their legal wives). Throughout history and in most places, polygamous civilizations were much more common, with very high status individuals sometimes having hundreds of wives or concubines.

Christian monogamy grew from its Roman rather than its Jewish roots. Judaism only adopted monogamy under pressure from Christianity. The Mormon heresy was polygamous and yet could not be thought of as uncivilized.

    Well said Rob.

People are by and large conformist thinkers.

    — “Winning” for your people/civilization is taking territory from the other guy, growing with positive fertility, positive (or at least maintenance) eugenically–via the natural route. The American (and Canadian, Australian, N.Z.) expansion on through the end of the 19th century a clear example.

    — Normal “Progress” is you are defending your territory, eugenic fertility outbreeding or integrating (suitable) minority populations… nation growing stronger.

    — “Decline” is you are getting relatively weaker through disgenics, minorities outbreeding or minorities dis-integrating, potentially leading to fracture.

    — “Losing” is other people taking territory from your people.

    — “Really losing” is your people losing territory, and minorities outbreeding you, and sub-replacement disgenic fertility and minority disaggregation.

… and that’s our “moderates”–i.e. minoritarians, Democrats–program. The only thing worse would be “Destruction” — military invasion and outright bullet-in-the-brain genocide.

Unfortunately don’t have logic/mathematical models of the world–they don’t think that way. They are conformist thinkers … what everyone else thinks.

And the minoritarian “nation of immigrants!” propaganda–education, news media, government, Hollyweird–is incredibly intense, inescapable. Most people think “immigration!” is “reasonable” or “normal”, when actually letting real foreigners colonize your nation is the most deeply un-natural thing imaginable. Like letting someone rape your wife. Normal people don’t think “gee this is great!”

The people who incessantly push this are not your friends… they are your enemies.

Medieval European peasants were not freewheeling, bastard-producing and promiscuous. They had a person called a wife or husband regardless of whether they had a legal document or formal ceremony. Moving in together was considered marriage and not a test run or fun fling.

They considered themselves married and others in their communities did as well. The legality of the marriage was of no concern. it was socially and religiously accepted. Sex with someone else happened but was adultery. Most children had married parents.

  161. @Jack D

Jack, as long as i was, i was trying not to go book length. (And, i’m no anthropologist. Most anthropologists aren’t actually anthropologists!)

Yes, herding cultures are different than settled cultures. And the Jews were a herding culture.

In herding cultures the women are livestock (property) and polygamy is more common. There is often a “bride price”–just like for selling an animal. Women are often given as payment of debt or obligation. Often women are kept within the patrilineal tribe keeping tribal bonds very tight. (The US used this tribalism in Iraq, to get the Sunni tribes onside against Sunni terrorist outsiders.)

But polygamy is inherently unstable. It builds up young “surplus” young males. It only works for herding cultures, because herding cultures have constant inter-tribal warfare killing off some of the surplus males. That along with a growing population (more young women than older men) and polygamy can continue. But those polygamous Mormon subsects–trying to make it work in America without open tribal warfare killing young men–have to instead expel young men and are always in boiling fractious feuds and power struggles.

Herding cultures like the Jews, the Arabs, the Maasi are not normative for the world.

The big successful high-population civilizations–Europe, China, India, Persia–were settled agricultural societies. They don’t want to have constant tribal strife/warfare killing off young men. (Violence belongs to the state and surplus men can be used to defend and expand it.) They want the peasant farmers at the base of society to be more or less content. (They don’t “care” about them, but they want them to be stable and productive, not coming after the elite parasites with pitchforks.)

This requires a social norm of monogamy.

In settled societies the wealth is in *land*, not livestock (inc. women). In normal–non-famine/plague–times the population tends to expand. And instead of “bride price” there is often dowry. I.e. for this my daughter’s children–my lineage–inherit your land, rather than some other guy’s. Brides are not kept within patrilineal families, but traded across them to build bonds between families, building higher/broader trust in the society.

Sure the emperor, the king, maybe even nobles and lords can have extra wives or mistresses or concubines. Powerful men always do … otherwise what’s the point of being powerful! (Men used to understand basic biology in ways Western leaders seem to have forgotten.) But this–mathematically–had to be very thin. The social norm in a settled peaceful productive society has to be monogamy.

    ~~

Again the distinctions above are sort of “game theory” level anthropology everyone should know. Not complicated stuff. Flows right out of basic math + basic human nature. Males who aren’t getting any and ergo have no stake in the future are going to fight. (Maybe they are satiated now with video games and porn … but i wouldn’t hold my breath.)

Males who agree to/build a culture of Yvette-is-yours, Mary-is-mine monogamy, can build trust, defend their territory and devote more cycles to productive effort and use the fruits of that for “higher paternal investment”–more children, better fed children, better raised/skilled children. We call that process … “civilization”.

    Stability requires monogamy.

    High trust requires monogamy.

    Productive endeavor requires monogamy.

    Civilization requires monogamy.

England has been firmly controlled by state Christianity for 1,700 years . Roman historians noted the Gallic Celtic custom of monogamy The Christian Church never tolerated unmarried couples living together.

Common law marriage is an English institution. Essentially, a man and woman living together without a wedding ceremony are considered legally married with all the duties and responsibilities. Mostly man husband supports woman wife. Legally married. As recently as 80 years ago, in some American states a man and woman checking into a hotel together 7 or more times constituted a common law marriage.

I believe you are confusing just moving in together with hand fasting and other customs. Sex permissible for engaged couples who didn’t get married till the woman got pregnant.

This is why all societies insist on some form of legal religious marriage be it monogamy or polygamy. Some one has to support children and single woman can’t do it. So societies either establish extensive welfare systems or force men to marry and support their kids. 1,000 years ago in Europe the Catholic Church ran an extensive child welfare system of orphanages cheap boarding schools and job training and placement for children. Nowadays Europeans and Americans run an extensive welfare system for kids without fathers in the form of either affirmative action jobs for the mothers or direct welfare. Direct welfare means that men taxpayers support the kids whose fathers don’t support them.

Are you aware that sex leads to children? That children can’t feed and shelter themselves? That’s why societies require marriage.

The question is not whether there was ballot fraud in those areas (there always is) but whether there was more ballot fraud than usual. It is a given for any Republican candidate (including Trump in 2016) that in order to win he has to overcome huge Dem margins in the big cities of every swing state by sweeping the rural areas and at least holding his own in the suburbs. The suburbs were where Trump failed this time. The suburbs generally have reasonably clean politics and are nothing like the corrupt Dem machines that control the cities.

If you look at the cities that you mention, you’ll see that to the extent that Biden got more votes, it was by a small margin and not enough to swing them. OTOH, Biden got MASSIVELY more votes in places like Arizona and in a lot of suburban counties.

There is of course no point to Dem ballot fraud in big cities in solidly blue states like NY and CA. Ballot fraud carries some risk which has to be counterbalanced for reward. If you remember part of Hillary’s strategy was to campaign and spend ad $ in those states anyway, for mysterious reasons known only to Ada, the computer who ran her campaign. Biden did not make that mistake.

    Civilization requires monogamy.

This is just wrong. You can make this broad sweeping generalizations but they are just false and betray a very narrow understanding of the meaning of civilization. Civilization is not synonymous with Western Civilization. Other civilizations are possible. They may not be to your taste but they were still civilizations by any measure. China had a civilization without monogamy. Islam had a civilization without monogamy.

According to the Ethnographic Atlas Codebook (1998), of 1,231 societies noted, 588 had frequent polygyny, 453 had occasional polygyny, 186 were monogamous and 4 had polyandry.

In cultures which practice polygamy, its prevalence among that population often correlates with class and socioeconomic status [i.e. the higher your status the more likely it is you will have more than 1 wife and very high status individuals may have a whole bunch of wives.]

In your reply you state that “marriage” is cohabitation (common law) so what I mentioned as the historical reality was misguided. Yes, if everyone is “married” that way, most were. But the original post suggested this marriage had to be officiated/recognized formally by a clerical body. True that was the custom for some, but most poor serfs, peasants and others didn’t rate that. Priests were rare in small rural areas. And they didn’t officiate for free.

I know about common law marriages as I live in a state that recognizes it. Those rules vary.

Some of the replies to my post seem to think I’m against marriage. Why? I didn’t say so, only that the idea that “moral sex” must be done within a formal religious marriage is untenable. I agree this is often desirable and I have been married to the same woman for decades myself.

But the statements made here seem to be based only on a short window of only English history. Customs vary considerably world wide and even in Europe. Biology trumps all and absent birth control a lot of our ancestors weren’t born from “legal” or formal marriages. There was also plenty of rape, incest and traveling Romeos, not to mention prostitution.

I fully support intact families and children raised in stable marriages. But to think this is the only way it has happened, or can happen, is ridiculous. The subject is too complex to address here. Books have been written about the history of that. As a final side note, DNA evidence from even wealthy British families from centuries back indicates that it was not uncommon for some of the children even in elites to have a different father from the patriarch. Even when maternal DNA was the same.

Today’s epidemic in some communities of feral children is a serious problem. I fully understand.

I would ban government involvement in so-called “marriage” or any other form of sociosexual commerce/contracts.

If you want to “marry” your lawnmower, that should be strictly between you and the lawnmower. The only legal question should be, “Is the mower legally competent?” IOW, “Does the mower have enough (presumably artificial) neurons to know what it is signing?”

My guess is that, in today’s world, large number s of “liberated” women would choose to “marry” a vibratory sex toy, only some of which might be biologic, or have biologic parts.
    The toys, not the women.

Men would probably choose to rent AVs.

There was an article about how Trump bet it all on GOTV, because his campaign (thanks to Brad Parscale’s spendthrift ways, for which he was belatedly fired, after the coffers ran dry) lacked the funds for ads. Trump’s ridiculous overemphasis on preaching to the converted by holding Roman-style triumphs (aka campaign rallies) was likely the reason he lost. There’s a reason Pepsi and Coke both have huge advertising budgets. To influence people whose cola preference depends on what they saw and heard on TV/the internet yesterday. They’re appealing to that wishy-washy segment rather than to Coke or Pepsi fanatics.

Have you met any Shakers lately? Probably not because part of their doctrine was not to have sex or children so they have all died off. Modern Western society is like one giant Shaker colony. The future belongs to those who show up. If those who show up are mostly Islamic or African or Mormon or whatever, so be it.

White civilization might have a comeback in the distant future. Without white people, there’s no way that Africa is going to sustain a population of 4 billion people. At some point it’s all going to collapse and maybe 3 billion or more will die miserable deaths by disease and starvation (but we won’t be around to see it). But in the short run the game is pretty much over for white people. If your birth rates are 50% of replacement level then your nation can’t be sustained in its current form. It was fun while it lasted.

    Civilization does not require monogamy.

A modern, developed civilization which is pleasant to be a member of is a lot more likely to be stable and succeed with monogamy. Most societies have aped the West on these kinds of things rather than the other way around. There’s a reason for that.

    >(Maybe they are satiated now with video games and porn … but i wouldn’t hold my breath.)

Whenever I hear someone complain about how men are so satisfied with porn and video games that they are too lazy to go after real women, I question whether that person has ever actually interacted with one of these men. Few if any of them joyously embrace this “alternative” because it is inherently more satisfying.

In my immediate family (4 siblings) there are two male descendants in the first generation, and one in the second. Neither I nor my sister have any descendants. Youngest brother has one son, who is legally blind and has no children. IOW, the bloodline is dying out, very rapidly. None of us are homosexual, physically unhealthy, physically unattractive, particularly antisocial, or destitute, but we have chosen not to reproduce. Similar situation exists among first cousins on both sides of family.

in the short run the game is pretty much over for white people.

    Agree.
Things are probably much worse for the younger generation, hamstrung by educational debt and struggling to survive in a so-called “gig” economy.

3 billion or more will die miserable deaths by disease and starvation

    Probably.
And those who survive may well live under an oppressive, tyrannical regime, of which what we ar now seeing is only a foretaste.

we won’t be around to see it

    Praise be.
If i had small children, I would euthanize them.
If I had larger children, I would apologize to them, beg their forgiveness for bringing them into this insane world, and forgive them patricide, should they choose it.

ITLR, I expect most male homo sapiens in so-called “civilized” societies will be sterilized at puberty. Society, not the individual, will decide if their genes will be perpetuated. Offspring will be raised by the state, for the state, as Huxley predicted. It will be biologically impossible for these creatures (part biologic, part electronic) to have inappropriate thoughts, or deviate from state prescribed behaviour.

Glad I will not be around to see it, and proud to have not contributed any gametes to its gene pool.

Now that kids aren’t really needed for their labor, they function in part as ideological recruits for the coming omni-state. Shame is a powerful disincentive, particularly for the young, and they shame each other all the time for perceived infractions of the speech and thought codes. I hear my teenagers laugh about it, but I also know they they would be mortified to be singled out as thought transgressors on the internet. It strikes them as somewhat absurd, but they also fear and respect it. This is the way kids’ used to react to the dictates of their parents.

Parents feel less and less that their kids are an extension of themselves and their values, and more and more that they are strangers parachuted into the home to uphold the prevailing orthodoxy and correct any doctrinal deviations. In the kids’ defense, they are immersed in a virtual community which inculcates in them a worldview that — if it resembles that of their parents — does so only by coincidence.

Modern people just have too many child-free options and not enough positive incentives to sustain replacement population levels. Society used to more or less push people in the direction of raising a family. Now, it doesn’t.

The problem is that there are lots of people in the world who are not “modern people” but rather backwards primitives. The result of the process that you describe is that with each passing generation there are fewer and few modern people and more and more primitives. For now, what tends to happen is that some of the children of the primitives get assimilated into modern society but eventually they become too numerous and the modern society disappears or is sublimated to the new society that the primitives create which becomes the dominant culture.

    – Doctrinal assertions that “gender” (i.e. sex) and race are merely social constructs. (To the point of fabricating concepts as patently absurd as “the female penis” and “male menstruation”.)

    – That buggery and pairings based upon it are fully-equivalent (and perhaps even superior) to the coitus and matrimony that the aforesaid grotesqueries are a travesty of.

    – Puberty-blockers for confused eight-year-olds

    – Female policemen, firefighters and combat troops

    – Removal of stigma from and encouragement of (esp. female) promiscuity

    – Demonization of masculinity and men; belittling and denial of indispensable male role in creation and sustaining of families; denial and denigration of foundational concept of traditional nuclear family itself

These are some of the follies and scourges that have been most corrosive to modern societies. Were such collective lapses of sanity and denials of objective, manifest reality brought to us by “backwards primitives”?

    Civilization requires monogamy.

This is just wrong. You can make this broad sweeping generalizations but they are just false and betray a very narrow understanding of the meaning of civilization. Civilization is not synonymous with Western Civilization. Other civilizations are possible. They may not be to your taste but they were still civilizations by any measure. China had a civilization without monogamy. Islam had a civilization without monogamy.

How about “civilization requires functional monogamy”?

    I already said:

Sure the emperor, the king, maybe even nobles and lords can have extra wives or mistresses or concubines. Powerful men always do … otherwise what’s the point of being powerful! (Men used to understand basic biology in ways Western leaders seem to have forgotten.) But this–mathematically–had to be very thin. The social norm in a settled peaceful productive society has to be monogamy.

Which seems to me to be a very adequate treatment of the issue.

I’m not–no one is–saying you have to make a religion out of monogamy. You can have standard social practices that you don’t make a religion out of.

Only that polygamy is inherently–i.e. mathematically and the nature of sexual reproduction–unstable. And “civilization” is all about creating a productive stability–putting men to work at productive endeavor rather than just fighting and mate guarding. Ergo the polygamy that exists in a civilization must be thin.

I was attempting satire, but you have a point.

Judaism only adopted monogamy under pressure from Christianity.

While perhaps technically accurate in the strictest legal sense, I would contend that is at least somewhat of an overstatement, and, at a minimum, one that easily creates a less-than-accurate impression. A desire to avoid conflict with the larger Christian society that Jews lived within may very well have been at least a large part of the reason for the rabbinic decree against polygamy (issued circa 1000 CE, according to tradition) that remains binding upon all of Ashkenazic Jewry. But polygamy was never held-up as an ideal, encouraged or even necessarily ever common within Judaism. If anything, the practice of taking more than one wife (or at least of taking many) was explicitly discouraged. From the Patriarchs Abraham, Issac and Jacob, to King Solomon, through statements in the Talmud and beyond, the conflicts, we are warned against the strife and even calamities that having multiple wives is liable to bring.
    ~ ~ ~
Your interlocutor, Another Dad has made a number of valid points. The agreement I had registered with one of your comments that challenged him was specifically concerning the limitations of his unqualified (originally, at least) assertions concerning the relationship of monogamy to civilization, per se. As you correctly pointed-out, prominent, influential, long-lived civilizations have not been limited to those of the Christian, Western or white variety.

(Lest my words be misconstrued, let me reiterate my sympathy for Western whites who are concerned with preserving their heritage.)

Yeah, my extended family has pulled a similar disappearing act. Sad but better than slavery.

One clarification, though: Africa won’t be supporting four billion people, but not because it can’t. True, it can’t, but it won’t have to. Europe and America will do the dirty work there.

And in the process Europe and America will be ruined forever. It’s already beginning.

[Rob McX:] I’m just wondering, where do you go after trannies?

    Bestialists, necrophiliacs?

I asked the same question a while back and suggested the same answers you did. Someone pointed out the obvious answer that I had missed: pedophiles.

Of course, it will be all phrased in terms of “children’s right to choose.”

While there has, in recent decades, been some movement in the direction that the two of you suggest, there has also been a not-inconsiderable amount in the opposite direction. The phenomenon of moral panic that John Derbyshire and others have referred-to as Pedo-hysteria has actually increased in a number of areas and respects.

Bottom-line: Acceptance of pedophilia [sic] (i.e., carnal usage by adults of young, clearly prepubescent children) still seems difficult to imagine. Pederasty— and, specifically, the predatory grooming, recruitment and desecration of tender, still-pristine, precious adolescent lads by adult sodomites (and also the female equivalent involving adult women and adolescent girls), however, is another matter. Further “progress” in the increased acceptance, underway for some time already, in that area would, if present trends continue to prevail, seem inevitable.

As iSteve commenter Redneck farmer put it so pithily back in August 2019,

    According to Wikipedia, [emphasis mine]

The legality of sex with animals has been steadily decreasing over the past 20 years. As of February 10, 2018, 45 states and 2 territories ban sex with animals, while 5 states and the District of Columbia have decriminalized it (due to repeal of sodomy laws).[1] In 2017, five states (Texas, Kentucky, West Virginia, Vermont and Nevada) introduced legislation to ban bestiality, with Nevada, Vermont, and Texas enacting laws banning it in 2017.[2][3][4][5][6] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoophilia_and_the_law_in_the_United_States ]

As much as twenty years ago, I heard Peter Singer in a radio interview argue that if an animal is free to flee the amorous advances of a human (i.e., not restrained in any way) yet does not do so, said animal could be considered to have effectively granted consent.

Cannibalism was also mentioned, in a different comment in this thread. One can perhaps imagine said practice, at least when not necessitating the killing of the individual whose flesh is to be consumed, promoted as environmentally-friendly.
