Race And Ideology Take Center Stage In Scramble To Succeed Kamala Harris
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is under pressure to appoint either a Black woman, a Latino or a member of the LGBTQ community.

When Kamala Harris assumes her historic role as the first woman and nonwhite vice president in January, she will be vacating one of California’s two U.S. Senate seats.
It is now up to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a first-term Democrat, to decide whether to call a special election or choose a replacement to serve out the remainder of Harris’ term, which is slated to end in 2022.
Newsom has been tight-lipped about his plans, but the conventional wisdom among Golden State politics watchers is that Newsom will appoint a replacement rather than delay the arrival of a new Democratic senator with an expensive special election. And Newsom’s allies have made clear that he does not plan to name a white man to the seat.
As a result, activists and various progressive groups began a campaign to sway Newsom months before the election, and that has intensified in recent days. The jockeying is intense because whoever gains control of the seat — and runs for election as an incumbent in two years — is likely to control the influential and safely Democratic post for decades to come.
Three main camps and their subgroups are trying to influence Newsom: Those advocating for a Black woman; those advocating for a Latino; and those advocating for a member of the LGBT community.
Black activists and progressive groups insist that Newsom name a Black woman to replace Harris, only the second Black woman to serve in the Senate.
Black Americans make up about 13% of the population but occupy just two of 100 Senate seats. Both of them ― New Jersey Democrat Sen. Cory Booker and South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott ― are men.
But blacks are only half as abundant in California as nationwide, so black women only make up 3% of the California population.
In contrast, Latinos make up 39.4% of California’s residents.
Another issue is that California is somewhat lacking, despite its huge population, in Democratic Party talent. There is no obvious successor who could be assumed to have inevitably gotten to the Senate with or without Newsom’s boost. So, wings of the Democratic Party not blessed by Newsom would resent his skipping over them.
Some say the smart thing for Newsom to do rather than to appoint a mid-career individual who would likely be in the Senate for decades, due to California being a one-party state, thus alienating the rest of the Democrats’ Coalition of the Fringes, would be to appoint a senior statesperson to the US senate to fill out Kamala Harris’s two years, and then let the voters in the 2022 primary determine the long-term occupant.
Newsom might pick a Democratic Party elder with a long track record of successful deal-making to succeed Kamala, but extract a promise publicly not to run in 2022.
The most obvious such senior statesman is the former California assembly speaker for a record 14 years and mayor of San Francisco, Willie Brown.
Newsom should appoint himself.

The Obvious choice is Hillary Clinton. She was a Senator from New York having never lived there. It’s easy for her to move to L.A. . Michelle or Barack Obama should be his next choice. No POCs could complain.

I have no significant contact with any California Hispanics, but I’ve got to think they are seething with resentment that the power elite puts such disproportionate focus on blacks (6% of the CA population) and gays (1%?) and transes (0.001%?) instead of them (39%). I hope Newsom appoints a normal Mexican American man who is married and has a few children.
And yet Willie Brown will be in far better condition than the Cadaver in Thief.

I don’t know what’s politically possible in California anymore, but if Newsome appoints a young fully woke black gay etc, would there be any chance for a populist Hispanic Republican to beat them in a general election? Of course it would be tough to buck the Silicon Valley oligarchs in California, so how they approached the H1B issue would be a challenge.
This stuff is why everyone on the DR should get involved with BLM. Point out to the membership that Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Apple, Nike, Wal-Mart, Google, Facebook, and Twitter all have lots and lots of money and power … that rightfully belong to black people.
Help them demand that Jack Dorsey step down and hand over his ownership to … Ibrahim X. Kendi. Kendi Xirself would be on board with that. Demand that Bill Gates hand over his money to … BLM! That Wal-Mart’s executive team be entirely replaced with … the surviving members of the Wu-Tang Clan. Make sure that Apple, Nike, and Google replace ALL their executive teams, every single one, with black people. Tim Cook should be replaced by genius Cardi B. A sitting Senator is always a potential political competitor to the governor. The Senator may run for governor at some point, or block the governor from moving into the Senate if he gets term-limited or needs to change jobs. The Senator may also take up the spot of the state’s “favorite son” in a presidential run or compete for donors.
For all these reasons, one group always gets the most preferential treatment when a governor is called upon to name a Senator in his own state. This group, in fact, is massively overrepresented in these choices.
The group I am referring to, of course, is: untalented, uncharismatic, unattractive, mediocre-Americans.
I boldly predict Newsome’s pick will be a member of this group. Antonio Villaraigosa certainly fits this demographic. But it would be dangerous for Newsome to elevate even a mediocre Hispanic to statewide office. A repulsive black lesbian would be ideal.
And those groups hate each other.
On the other hand, Whites, like the “ethnics” up North (Italians, Irish, Polish, etc.) along with White Southerners, and Whites who live in rural and most suburban areas all over the country, make up the largest group of voters who will vote as a block. Trump showed that.
Also, the squishy Whites who are always looking to betray us for personal gain will nonetheless vote with the White block in time. Ironically, this will accelerate when they are unable to protect themselves from the “diversity” they impose on others. Quakers had a prissy lack of loyalty to other Whites who were fighting Indians. Except when their lily White asses were attacked.
I don’t know where the anti-White liberal Jews or the New England Puritans White descendants will wind up. Nor would I care, except they can be intelligent and hardworking when it comes to harming White people. But they may be passing their political zenith.

Willie Brown would be an excellent pick, about as semi-statesman-like as we could ever hope for from Newsom under the circumstances. Though I would suspect that Sen. Harris would not be in favor of that. (Not that there would be an media pieces or late-night-comic discussion of it.)
I think it has to be a Hispanic. Villaraigosa is probably not whom Newsome would want to cede a lifetime seat to, and I don’t know who else there is. Maybe Becerra, though he might not want to leave his prime perch as AG and presumably the next governor.
Maybe some Hollywood type that Newsom wants to give a favor too to kick-start a political career, like George Clooney or Oprah? Though now that Trump has broken the glass ceiling of a celebrity with no prior elected office being able to get elected president, maybe these types won’t think it’s worth the headache.

Eliminating the age of consent is an obvious point (not the endpoint) on the trail of individualism. The very existence of age of consent laws is an individualist, liberal invention. Remember that consent and marriage used to be one in the same. All sex outside of marriage was illegal. And the concept of “spousal rape” didn’t even exist as a legal concept until 1970. “Consent” was permanently given one time, in public, in front of your friends and family in a traditional ceremony called a “wedding.” But the last 50/60/70/however many years have completely undone traditional conceptions of sex.
Why exactly should an 18 year old just be able to go out and have sex with whomever he or she (especially a she) wants? Even most “conservatives” don’t have any real argument against this.
Once almost everyone has conceded that an 18 year old should be able to legally choose to get gang banged, there is no logical reason to not let a 17 year old do it, or a 16 year old, or a 14 year old, or a 12 year old, etc. There isn’t an age at which someone magically becomes able to make wise choices. If consent is all that matters, and consent is untethered from marriage and community, then the common refrain of “children can’t consent to sex” (often used by leftists when you suggest their agenda is leading to open pedarasty) becomes seen as the flimsy joke of an excuse that it is.
NO ONE can meaningfully consent to sex outside of marriage.
I would replace age of consent with laws banning all sex outside of marriage. Needless to say, I would define “marriage” as between a biological man and a biological woman.
As for the age someone was allowed to get married, I would leave it up to the father or patriarch, although with the exception of prepubescent marriages (ew).

Hmm unfortunately, Angela Davis isn’t gay. Being so tall and flat chested though, she could claim to be a tranny. That would give her enough points.

If Newsom intends to run for the seat himself in two years he’ll nominate someone old and/or feckless.
If Newsom considers himself presidential material the nominee will either be Jewish or black. Ultimately it was the black vote that put Biden over the top for the presidential nomination. But California isn’t as black as the rest of the country, and Newsom doesn’t seem like the kind of white guy blacks would be very fond of, anyway. Nominating a black isn’t going to make them like him.
OTOH, Jews are the real power in the Democratic Party, and they reward people who advance their own. Most of Biden’s top donors were Jewish, and Biden’s administration is already shaping up to be perhaps the most Jewish administration in history. He’s only announced a handful of cabinet picks so far but already two of them are Jewish (Yellen and Mayorkas) as is his chief of staff.
Asians? Gays? Hispanics? Yeah, they’d all like it to be one of their own. But they don’t have as much power in the Democratic Party as they’d like to think – and they never will. The nice thing about appointing a “Mexican” is that a Mexican doesn’t have to be Mestizo, although the majority are. You can appoint a high IQ 100% white Maronite or Jew or Spaniard of Mexican descent and get the best of both worlds. Any “black” that you appoint has to be at least a little black to the point where if you squint they appear visibly black but there is no Mexican equivalent of a Rachel Dolezal – your native blood quantum can be zero and you can still “count” as Mexican.

Cole’s premise is that California’s rejection of Prop. 16 was a rejection of blacks, by all races, and not a rejection of fairness, justice, etc. AA means black now and Asians and Latinos are maturing enough to where they are perusing alternative strategies to climb up the latter. The proponents of Prop. 16 are trying to make this out to be purely a white black thing but it is pretty clear we are past peak negro.
The Democrats explicitly took the fork in the road to go black. Yes, herding cultures are different than settled cultures. And the Jews were a herding culture.
In herding cultures the women are livestock (property) and polygamy is more common. There is often a “bride price”–just like for selling an animal. Women are often given as payment of debt or obligation. Often women are kept within the patrilineal tribe keeping tribal bonds very tight. (The US used this tribalism in Iraq, to get the Sunni tribes onside against Sunni terrorist outsiders.)
But polygamy is inherently unstable. It builds up young “surplus” young males. It only works for herding cultures, because herding cultures have constant inter-tribal warfare killing off some of the surplus males. That along with a growing population (more young women than older men) and polygamy can continue. But those polygamous Mormon subsects–trying to make it work in America without open tribal warfare killing young men–have to instead expel young men and are always in boiling fractious feuds and power struggles.
Herding cultures like the Jews, the Arabs, the Maasi are not normative for the world.
The big successful high-population civilizations–Europe, China, India, Persia–were settled agricultural societies. They don’t want to have constant tribal strife/warfare killing off young men. (Violence belongs to the state and surplus men can be used to defend and expand it.) They want the peasant farmers at the base of society to be more or less content. (They don’t “care” about them, but they want them to be stable and productive, not coming after the elite parasites with pitchforks.)
This requires a social norm of monogamy.
In settled societies the wealth is in *land*, not livestock (inc. women). In normal–non-famine/plague–times the population tends to expand. And instead of “bride price” there is often dowry. I.e. for this my daughter’s children–my lineage–inherit your land, rather than some other guy’s. Brides are not kept within patrilineal families, but traded across them to build bonds between families, building higher/broader trust in the society.
Sure the emperor, the king, maybe even nobles and lords can have extra wives or mistresses or concubines. Powerful men always do … otherwise what’s the point of being powerful! (Men used to understand basic biology in ways Western leaders seem to have forgotten.) But this–mathematically–had to be very thin. The social norm in a settled peaceful productive society has to be monogamy.

The question is not whether there was ballot fraud in those areas (there always is) but whether there was more ballot fraud than usual. It is a given for any Republican candidate (including Trump in 2016) that in order to win he has to overcome huge Dem margins in the big cities of every swing state by sweeping the rural areas and at least holding his own in the suburbs. The suburbs were where Trump failed this time. The suburbs generally have reasonably clean politics and are nothing like the corrupt Dem machines that control the cities.
If you look at the cities that you mention, you’ll see that to the extent that Biden got more votes, it was by a small margin and not enough to swing them. OTOH, Biden got MASSIVELY more votes in places like Arizona and in a lot of suburban counties.
There is of course no point to Dem ballot fraud in big cities in solidly blue states like NY and CA. Ballot fraud carries some risk which has to be counterbalanced for reward. I am rather amazed at what responses I got from my original reply. That original post to which I responded argued that absent “marriage” sex was immoral and universally condemned, or something.
In your reply you state that “marriage” is cohabitation (common law) so what I mentioned as the historical reality was misguided. Yes, if everyone is “married” that way, most were. But the original post suggested this marriage had to be officiated/recognized formally by a clerical body. True that was the custom for some, but most poor serfs, peasants and others didn’t rate that. Priests were rare in small rural areas. And they didn’t officiate for free.
I know about common law marriages as I live in a state that recognizes it. Those rules vary.
Some of the replies to my post seem to think I’m against marriage. Why? I didn’t say so, only that the idea that “moral sex” must be done within a formal religious marriage is untenable. I agree this is often desirable and I have been married to the same woman for decades myself.
But the statements made here seem to be based only on a short window of only English history. Customs vary considerably world wide and even in Europe. Biology trumps all and absent birth control a lot of our ancestors weren’t born from “legal” or formal marriages. There was also plenty of rape, incest and traveling Romeos, not to mention prostitution.

Whenever I hear someone complain about how men are so satisfied with porn and video games that they are too lazy to go after real women, I question whether that person has ever actually interacted with one of these men. In my immediate family (4 siblings) there are two male descendants in the first generation, and one in the second. Neither I nor my sister have any descendants. Youngest brother has one son, who is legally blind and has no children. IOW, the bloodline is dying out, very rapidly. None of us are homosexual, physically unhealthy, physically unattractive, particularly antisocial, or destitute, but we have chosen not to reproduce. Similar situation exists among first cousins on both sides of family.

Now that kids aren’t really needed for their labor, they function in part as ideological recruits for the coming omni-state. Shame is a powerful disincentive, particularly for the young, and they shame each other all the time for perceived infractions of the speech and thought codes. I hear my teenagers laugh about it, but I also know they they would be mortified to be singled out as thought transgressors on the internet. It strikes them as somewhat absurd, but they also fear and respect it. This is the way kids’ used to react to the dictates of their parents.
Parents feel less and less that their kids are an extension of themselves and their values, and more and more that they are strangers parachuted into the home to uphold the prevailing orthodoxy and correct any doctrinal deviations. In the kids’ defense, they are immersed in a virtual community which inculcates in them a worldview that — if it resembles that of their parents — does so only by coincidence.
Modern people just have too many child-free options and not enough positive incentives to sustain replacement population levels. Society used to more or less push people in the direction of raising a family. Now, it doesn’t.
The problem is that there are lots of people in the world who are not “modern people” but rather backwards primitives. The result of the process that you describe is that with each passing generation there are fewer and few modern people and more and more primitives. For now, what tends to happen is that some of the children of the primitives get assimilated into modern society but eventually they become too numerous and the modern society disappears or is sublimated to the new society that the primitives create which becomes the dominant culture.

While perhaps technically accurate in the strictest legal sense, I would contend that is at least somewhat of an overstatement, and, at a minimum, one that easily creates a less-than-accurate impression. A desire to avoid conflict with the larger Christian society that Jews lived within may very well have been at least a large part of the reason for the rabbinic decree against polygamy (issued circa 1000 CE, according to tradition) that remains binding upon all of Ashkenazic Jewry. But polygamy was never held-up as an ideal, encouraged or even necessarily ever common within Judaism. If anything, the practice of taking more than one wife (or at least of taking many) was explicitly discouraged. From the Patriarchs Abraham, Issac and Jacob, to King Solomon, through statements in the Talmud and beyond, the conflicts, we are warned against the strife and even calamities that having multiple wives is liable to bring.
