With a second Mariel Boatlift likely over the next few years, it’s worth reassessing the first one (1980). One of the most popular papers in economics is David Card’s claim that the Law of Supply and Demand doesn’t apply to immigration because wages didn’t fall in Miami in 1980-1984 compared to four other American cities.
As I’ve been pointing out for years, though, ceteris wasn’t paribus in these five cities in 1980-1984 because Miami was enjoying a world famous Cocaine Boom, as depicted in well-known movies like Scarface (1983) and TV shows like Miami Vice (1984).
But economists aren’t supposed to learn things from anywhere outside of economics journals.
Now, however, Harvard labor economist George Borjas has written a study pointing out that wages in Miami among high school dropouts got hammered by the Mariel Boatlift.
The Wage Impact of the Marielitos: A Reappraisal

ABSTRACT
This paper brings a new perspective to the analysis of the Mariel supply shock, revisiting the question and the data armed with the accumulated insights from the vast literature on the economic impact of immigration. A crucial lesson from this literature is that any credible attempt to measure the wage impact of immigration must carefully match the skills of the immigrants with those of the pre-existing workers. The Marielitos were disproportionately low-skill; at least 60 percent were high school dropouts. A reappraisal of the Mariel evidence, specifically examining the evolution of wages in the low-skill group most likely to be affected, quickly overturns the finding that Mariel did not affect Miami’s wage structure. The absolute wage of high school dropouts in Miami dropped dramatically, as did the wage of high school dropouts relative to that of either high school graduates or college graduates. The drop in the relative wage of the least educated Miamians was substantial (10 to 30 percent), implying an elasticity of wages with respect to the number of workers between -0.5 and -1.5. The analysis also documents the sensitivity of the estimated wage impact to the choice of a placebo. The measured impact is much smaller when the placebo consists of cities where pre-Mariel employment growth was weak relative to Miami.
This shouldn’t be too surprising since Miami high school dropouts in 1980 were heavily African-American, and Miami blacks were notoriously angry about the changes in their city after Mariel, rioting three times in the 1980s.
But who cares about poor African Americans? It was a good time in Miami to be a lawyer, banker, real estate developer, or all-purpose businessman with connections, such as Jeb Bush, who moved to Miami in late 1980.

BTW, I just saw a local news item about a K2 drug bust. Not being up on what kids these days do, I had to research K2. It’s a synthetic marijuana like compound and very dangerous. The guys busted were all Yemeni. Wonder if their drug money goes to funding terrorism. Just a thought.

Seriously, the street hooker index shows you the racial composition of a society’s lower echelons in their large cities. As such, it gives you a very slanted view. A society can have a large minority that winds up as street hookers but isn’t representative of the larger population.

The drug formulas are tweaked and chemicals formulated in China. The packaging is done offshore. The drugs are sent to the USA and sold through Yemeni/Hindu/Pakistani mom and pop corner stores for $1-$2 a packet as “incense”.

The best part of Borjas’s examination of that study is his pointing out that Card had missed a fundamental question and no one thought about asking it until 25 years later. This is a great example to shove in the faces of people who blindly cite studies in an appeal to authority. It really makes one question the validity of the “SCIENCE!” attitude as well.
One anecdote and one statement, both of which I hope are illustrative or helpful.
(1) A close relative of mine retired from Ohio and moved to Vero Beach, FL. After three years she returned to Ohio. Palmetto bugs, Hispanic supremacy (for want of a better term), and fear of encroaching Haitians with behaviors and attitudes she couldn’t cope with.
(2) Organized crime–Mafia, Black or Mexican gangbangers, drug cartels, Russian mob–can be an important part of any economic or social analysis. I once spoke with a businessman years ago who explained why he wouldn’t invest squat in my hometown in NE Ohio. “You’ve got organized labor, you’ve got Mafia. I toss in $10 million to build a factory, but I’ll have no idea who actually runs my shop floor. When I have a property dispute or other legal problem, I won’t know who controls the judges. I have the same problems in Mexico. They’re cheaper.” Not word for word, but pretty damned close.

There’s a clear bias in labor economics towards focusing on college+ markets already, and this combined with (majority immigrant) economists’ weirdness on immigration make papers like Borjas’ rare. He’s highly respected (and an immigrant!) so I’m sure his work will inspire more studies. It’s a slow field for publishing, though, unfortunately.

Because decline in wages leads to increased crime. It is nothing exclusive to blacks only. When the wages declined after 2008, many whites suddenly became “disabled”. We have a very low labor participation rate now. Many rationalized this fraud as an economic decision due to lower wages.

Might be more of a function of who is on the bottom of the totem pole in any society. The street types in majority white cities are usually disproportionally black and mixed types. A question could be asked about who are the customers, are they also black/mulatto?
How come the majority of prostitutes in Europe are not Black/Mulatto? If Cuba was a White country, the racial demographics of Cuban prostitutes should resemble the racial demographics of European prostitutes.
The prostitution scene in Cuba is a lot Blacker than the prostitution scene in Amsterdam and Kiev.

OT but something that has been discussed here in the past. Commenters have pointed out that states like Texas routinely classify as ‘white’ many of their hispanic criminals, and thus believe that white crime is overstated.
But now oddly activists have pushed for a new law that makes Texas troopers ask everyone they stop their race/ethnicity because they believe Texas cops are stopping minorities for traffic violations disproportionately.
From the story, it appears this just applies to traffic stops and to Texas Troopers. I don’t know if local cops have to abide by this, or if the Texas most wanted list will be updated to reflect the true demographic traits of the suspects.
But it is funny that an issue that the Right has been complaining about for years has now sort of landed into the laps of their opponents albeit for a different reason. There IS some truth to that–New York or Los Angeles, whatever their other drawbacks, are probably better for getting the world’s pulse than Provo–but nepotism and a family connections are a HUGE thing in that industry. So it’s not just meritocracy at work.
Also be aware that stupid movies are a lot more salable across cultures–Master and Commander isn’t that interesting if you don’t have an Anglo cultural background, and Annie Hall isn’t that funny if you’re not from New York–but fart jokes are funny everywhere.

Aside from the Palmetto bugs (they’re not a problem with regular applications of insecticide), I think your relative is exaggerating her complaints about the prevalence of Hispanics and Haitians in Vero, FL. Vero Beach is certainly much nicer (and costlier) than Vero, but the large numbers of Hispanics and Haitians are 100 miles south (but, yes, encroaching closer every year).
What I think is worth noting about my relative's thoughts upon returning from Florida is that they have no political weight. Nobody in our leadership caste really includes an elderly and modestly comfortable white woman with unpleasant experiences in Florida as part of their political calculus.

Along the lines of that topic, a much-advertised feature film is now coming out about the child molestation scandal in the Catholic church in Boston. The film is called "Spotlight".
Of course, I'm sure the film won't dwell on the fact that the molesters in question were almost all (if not actually all) homosexual, and that the increasing homosexualization of the clergy was one of the underlying causes of the Churchs' sexual abuse problems.
