Amram Scheinfeld, Cartoonist And Writer on Human Genetics

Sept. 12, 1979Amram Scheinfeld, a comic‐strip artist who became a widely read science writer on genetics, died yesterday at University Hospital. He was 79 years old and lived in Greenwich Village.
Mr. Scheinfeld’s first book, “You and Heredity,” published by Stokes in 1939, was credited with being the first accurate interpretation of the science of human genetics for the general public.
Among its features were illustrations by the author and a report on Mr. Scheinfeld’s own study of the inheritance of musical talent that led him to conclude that true musical talent was probably inherited and required the the coexistence of several genetic units, or genes.
Personal information was obtained by Mr. Scheinfeld from 36 outstanding instrumentalists, 36 principals of the Metropolitan Opera and 50 students of the Juilliard School of Music. Another study was made of children of musical artists.
“You and Heredity,” written with the the technical assistance of Dr. Morton Schweitzer, was praised by scientists in the United States and Britain, where it was prepared for publication by J.B.S. Haldane.
As the science of human genetics grew, Mr. Scheinfeld produced expanded editions. “The New You and Heredity” was published in 1950. He also wrote “Your Heredity and Environment,” published in 1965 and given The Saturday Review Anisfield‐Wolff award.
In the meantime, Mr. Scheinfeld had written “Women and Men,” a 1944 analysis of sex differences that foreshadowed many issues of the feminist movement.
He also wrote “The Human Heredity Handbook” (1956); “Why You Are You,” a work for children published in 1958 and revised in 1970; “Basic Facts of Human Heredity” (1961); “Twins and Supertwins,” an investigation of the social and psychological aspects of twinship (1967), and “Heredity in Humans” (1972). His novel, “Postscript to Wendy,” was published in 1959. …
Mr. Scheinfeld’s wife, Dorothy, said yesterday that her husband had completed another book before his death. It is called “The Human Sexes” and will be published next year by Alfred A. Knopf.
Mr. Scheinfeld was born in Louisville, Ky., a son of Rabbi Solomon I. Scheinfeld and the former Sanna R. Sachs.
… He also produced a daily column, “Snappy Shots,” for The New York American, drawing from life to accompany his humorous profiles of well‐known people.
“Meeting all these big‐shots, close‐up day after day,” Mr. Scheinfeld wrote to his family, “has set me thinking about what makes some people rise to the top, and so many others — the nobodies, failures, criminals I’d met as a reporter —stay at the bottom.” His speculations led to his interest in heredity.
Surviving is his wife. There will be no service.
This 1939 book “You and Heredity” by science cartoonist Amram Scheinfeld, the son of a rabbi, is a good example of how popular eugenics was among Jews before WWII, a fact that has been completely retconned down the memoryhole since the days of Stephen Jay Gould.

The most striking revelation is that, contrary to the current impression, Jews largely approved of eugenics until the end of the 1960s. (The most effective opponents tended to be Catholics, such as G.K Chesterton, author of 1922’s Eugenics and Other Evils.) Glad quotes endless Jewish spokesmen from the first seven decades of the 20th century to the effect that Jews had been practicing eugenic marriages for 3,000 years. The medical profession, which was largely secular and progressive, was enthusiastic about eugenics, and there was little evidence that the sizable number of Jewish doctors objected.
Rather, Jews didn’t contribute much scientifically to this quite productive movement because their city skills took them in other directions, such as becoming doctors rather than naturalists. To contribute to the Darwinian mainstream, it helped to be a smart country boy who grew up interested in plants, animals, and domestic animal breeding. Gould’s archrival Edward O. Wilson is a representative American version, an Alabama lad who couldn’t get enough of ants.
With that in mind, can you figure out the point of Scheinfeld’s cartoon?

I remember an essay from Aldous Huxley advocating eugenics. I suppose he was convinced by his brother Julian Huxley, a biologist – both are the grandsons of Thomas Huxley, a Darwin collaborator.

These days you see a lot more appreciation for women with shapely butts, wide hips, and thick thighs. The sort of physique that you might see on a Kardashian female. Black and Hispanic guys are really into that body type. However, Asian men love super skinny and dainty looking females.

Since this is a eugenics thread, the Silverman family had 4 daughters – three went into entertainment (camedian, actress, writer) and never married or had kids, one became a rabbi, is married and has three biological kids and two adopted black kids.
J.B.S. Haldane was a remarkable scientist, definitely a polymath, almost certainly a genius, and an unusually outspoken one, with idiosyncratic views. He has been mostly forgotten, but if he comes to the attention of the furies-that-be, he will escape being canceled, simply because he chose to become an Indian citizen and spend his last years in India.

It says on Wiki that she was married to this Rosen guy only for five years, divorcing at a still young 29, so it’s hardly the Jewish husband’s fault that she didn’t have any kids ever. It could also be for biological reasons, who knows.

It would not be too difficult to go to a stadium full of people and look at all the ones with hair and figure out population %’s for natural male blondes, natural male brunettes, female blondes (way more than 50% chemical), female brunettes and put a number on just how much women who can afford the time and the money to do so dye the hair.
That would probably be sexist or racist or both so I don’t expect there is good data out there. But it definitely is noticeable. I have been in places where it is like a factor of ten but that may have been a bad day for the brunies. It has to be at least double.

Go to any large city in Latin America and the women from upper middle class backgrounds and higher are much more likely to (a) be taller, (b) be slimmer, and (c) have more European features. I recently saw a video on Youtube; can’t remember the author but it was something like “BetterBachelor.” He introduced the video with a story about a guy on DS (Dating Site don’t remember the name). He got a right swipe (which means contact me?) from an attractive girl. So he sends her a message. She replies with a message saying she just right swiped him because she wanted to let him know he’s the most ugly, disgusting guy she ever saw and continued to heap scorn on him with a long message. A lot of American women(and men) are fat these days, so the curvaceous body type is becoming more socially acceptable due to necessity.
Also, you see lots of thin girls doing squats and pilates, to make themselves look “thicker.” Many would rather look curvy than willowy. Many of these women are influenced by rap videos by Cardi B.
This seems to be true of the large majority of Black’s and Hispanics, as well as many Whites. Asians may be the exception.
These days you see a lot more appreciation for women with shapely butts, wide hips, and thick thighs. The sort of physique that you might see on a Kardashian female. Black and Hispanic guys are really into that body type. However, Asian men love super skinny and dainty looking females.

There’s no such thing as fairness in marriage. Either the husband or the wife rules and one of them gets custody of the children in case of divorce. My proposal is a return to good old-fashioned patriarchy: the husband is king, the wife obeys her man and loses custody of the children if she files for a divorce. Good for you. The one time I get real mad at my younger daughter was when we were on a long road trip and she started complaining saying friggin this and friggin that. I told her that if she said it one more time I would find a gas station and wash her mouth out with soap. She knew me well enough to know that I never made idle threats, and that was that.

- A critical difference is to be acknowledged between (a) that which is uttered in particularly trying, acute moments, whether ones of pain, anger, anxiety, fear, desperation, disappointment, or shock; and (b) that which is uttered casually, without the aforesaid mitigating factors. Needless to say which, of the two types, is the far more forgivable one.
- As is the case for any number of other forms of indelicacy and crudeness, I find foul or even merely excessively coarse language from a female to be particularly unbecoming and repellent.

1.) Might you have any source you could cite for that? I had not heard of such an etymology until now. A brief web search did not yield anything.
Might you, perhaps, have been thinking of one of the slang meanings, apparently obsolete now, of the word jazz itself? [1]

I’ve never heard that jazz explanation before either, and I wonder if you have any sources. What I always assumed is that in the 40s or 50s or whenever the phrase first arose (it’s certainly on record existing by the 1960s), the full phrase was to say that someone you truly disliked “sucks dick”. As in, “Carlito? That sonovabitch? I’ll bet he sucks dick. You know he sucks. Carlito sucks.”
Then, in time, you could merely say that someone “sucks” as shorthand to indicate that you consider the person disgusting or disgraceful or otherwise highly objectionable, whether or not you literally mean the person is homosexual. Once that usage – “he sucks” – became commonplace in the originating milieu, it would be natural to expand the phrase and say that a thing or a situation “sucks” with the same meaning intact, i.e., that the thing or situation is intensely negative.
When the phrase moved into wider usage by the public in the 1960s and 70s, even without the original explicit reference to anatomy, the real meaning was highly likely to be retained subliminally, and this very vulgarity probably accounts for the phrase’s popularity as a confrontational/extreme way of expressing contempt.
This origin – “sucks” as shorthand for “sucks dick” – also accounts for the intensity and vitriol with which the phrase is employed among youths and males.
I should have said too that this sexual explanation also accounts for the very important accusatory nature of the phrase – at least as typically employed in earlier decades, before time dulled its power and obscured its origins – and thus why it was such a cutting and meaningful slur when used among males / male youths.
It also explains why there was controversy when “sucks” was first used on network TV, by a little kid, in 1990 in the short lived show “Uncle Buck” – i.e., everyone understood on some level that the insult was vulgar / near obscene because it was shorthand for a graphic sexual insult.

I’m not sure I understand your reply: my point was that there was no issue. He’s going to his final rest alone enough that it’s not worth a proper service. He studied the importance of family and didn’t have one. I’d like a Jewish wife as much as anyone else but she would be pregnant as often as it became necessary.
