In ritzy Dana Point, CA an emergency room doctor was riding his bicycle on Pacific Coast Highway. He was stopped at a red light in the bike lane when the driver of a Lexus hit him at high speed, sending the doctor flying perhaps 40 feet through the air. The PoC driver then did a u-turn, got out, yelled about “white privilege,” and attacked the prostrate white doctor with a knife and a BB gun. Brave onlookers apprehended the maniac, but the poor doctor died in his own emergency room.

Though, as the reporter said, the police weren't saying much about the suspect or victim, they were able to tell us that they're both men.

    So there's that.

This is a more serious point than you may have realized. If you live with dieversity, or if dieversity has recently arrived in town, then it's time to notice how vulnerable you are. Maybe either give up some activities or restrict them to safer areas. Bike in the woods instead of on the street. Augment that open porch with some sort of windows or bars. Always be situationally aware. I'll use this unfortunate incident as an opportunity to again state that whoever thought it was a good idea to allow a 40 pound leg driven cycles share the road with 4,000 - 80,000lbs motor vehicles is a candidate for institutionalization. Vehicular diversity is not our strength.

There are very few accidents between vehicles on job sites, rail terminals, quarries, military bases, and other industrial locations specifically because the largest vehicle always has the right of way. Even in nature, smaller animals know to get out of the way of larger ones.

So the idea that pedestrians and cyclists should be awarded right of way privileges on roadways dominated by motor vehicles is, like just about every other social policy in the US, completely backwards.

I'm an East Coast guy and have never actually been to California except at 30,000 feet, but in the memories of my youth Dana Point was the point of origin for those California Long Range fishing boats that take anglers down around the Baja Sur over 7-21 day trips as advertised in the back pages of Saltwater Sportsman. So for me, Dana Point is a place where guys get together to chuck anchovies at big Yellowfin Tuna in the Pacific.

I'm sure there's a lot more to Dana Point than this, but it's what my mind thinks of on the relative rare occasions that Dana Point is mentioned. Funny the way this works, huh?

    , @Ben Kurtz
    @J.Ross

    Your points are well taken.

But I was also quite serious in my initial post - make no mistake.

Many on the "green" left love to promote bicycle commuting in cities and suburbs because of its supposed environmental benefits.

When I was a university student I would oftentimes commute by bike out of necessity - no student parking on my campus for love of money. It made me vulnerable and it was highly injurious - I sustained at least one moderately severe orthopedic injury from crashing my bike just in my student days, and everyone I know who did a serious amount of bicycle commuting did too at one point or another. Also, I've had at least two bikes stolen from me. (Meanwhile, decades into my driving career, I have yet to sustain a single cut or bruise from crashing my car and I've never had a car stolen.)

All of which is to say - bicycling in traffic is a horrible daily habit, up there with chain-smoking in my view, and it should be discouraged whenever possible.

Mountain biking on trails is also very injurious, like downhill skiing, but dangerous hobbies pursued on your free time are your own problem - you don't have Blue City traffic planners doing their darndest to promote it.

Good point. My city is very cyclist friendly, with bike lanes everywhere. If I’m walking down any of the more heavily trafficked ones, I stay as far off road as I can get. With drivers constantly dicking around with their phones, all it takes is a second or two and they’re drifting off course. Now throw in POCs potentially looking for revenge, and it just adds to the toxic brew.

NextDoor can be useful but not surprisingly, you can read the dumbest stuff on NextDoor.
My favorite subject for that is the coyote infestation affecting parts of urban Southern California. The animals are boldly hunting through neighborhoods, picking off pets and in some cases trying to snatch small kids. In the discussions of what to do about it there are inevitably a few people who tell us we shouldn’t do anything because “they were here first”.
Most cities try everything they can to do nothing because they don’t want to be harried by animal rights activists. I know only one local municipality that traps and euthanizes them as allowed by law. (It’s illegal in California to trap and relocate them because the farm lobby doesn’t want coyotes breeding elsewhere and getting dumped in their laps.) Even more funny than the “they were here first” comments are the bureaucrats whose only advice is to “haze” the coyotes. When a coyote is spotted we are supposed to “haze” them; bang on pots and pans, yell at them and generally try to make them feel threatened and unwanted.

As I recalled it I was out on a jog and some big bloke jumped off his bike and attacked me. The next thing I remember was that the attack stopped, there were two tall policemen standing over me, and I was deep breathing like crazy. Then an ambulance came and took me to the accident and emergency at the local hospital.
    (UK, no docs required…)
The Registrar/lead doctor of A&E admitted me – the very same man who I thought had jumped up and down on me.

Turns out he was cycling to his evening shift and saw this jogger fall over. My very sore ribs were teh result of his CPR for 5 mins without success. Fortunately a bystander flagged down a passing police car. I don’t know what American police have in the boot of their cars, but here they carry a defibrillator. Without which even the A&E doctor might not have saved me.
My hero rushed off quick to get to work on his bike, and waited to say hello as he admitted me to A&E. Oh and he was little.

Now throw in POCs potentially looking for revenge, and it just adds to the toxic brew.

There's no doubt separate areas to ride are much safer, but calling for bike lanes makes one an asshole around here, as does wanting to ride where one can. Besides those who drive for a living (Mike Tre), I wonder if many of the bike naysayers just don't want to get off their asses and get exercise at all.

But I was also quite serious in my initial post – make no mistake.

Many on the “green” left love to promote bicycle commuting in cities and suburbs because of its supposed environmental benefits.

When I was a university student I would oftentimes commute by bike out of necessity – no student parking on my campus for love of money. It made me vulnerable and it was highly injurious – I sustained at least one moderately severe orthopedic injury from crashing my bike just in my student days, and everyone I know who did a serious amount of bicycle commuting did too at one point or another. Also, I’ve had at least two bikes stolen from me. (Meanwhile, decades into my driving career, I have yet to sustain a single cut or bruise from crashing my car and I’ve never had a car stolen.)

All of which is to say – bicycling in traffic is a horrible daily habit, up there with chain-smoking in my view, and it should be discouraged whenever possible.

Mountain biking on trails is also very injurious, like downhill skiing, but dangerous hobbies pursued on your free time are your own problem – you don’t have Blue City traffic planners doing their darndest to promote it.

It is certainly risky, and I’ve had some bad but not debilitating crashes. But I did many other similarly risky things when I was young.

People associate bikes and greens, but that wasn’t my experience with serious road cyclists. I was on a racing club a couple decades ago - mostly young White guys. This was in a deep Blue urban Whiteopia so I was surprised to meet a few other right wingers. I think it had to do with competition and obsession (most casual bike commuters are predictably green). Even more so when I took up mountaineering. Hard and dangerous activities seem to attract right wing dudes.

I still have a lot of empathy for cyclists, but only if they take the same common sense precautions I did eg use lights, don’t hog the road.

    Replies: @TWS

I used to get $50 per coyote and I could also sell the hide. My great grandfather caught at least a hundred one winter plus a dozen wolves. If you keep the numbers controlled they will breed back right quick and you might increase your elk population.

  66. Given the location he lives in, his white-collar profession and his hobby(cycling), it’s almost 100% sure that this doctor was a WUL(“white urban liberal”)

When will the white liberal upper middle-classes understand that liberalism is fantastic…in the context of northern Europe and in populations directly descended from them?

Liberalism is highly, highly dysfunctional when the population is not genetically related to Swedes, Dutchmen and the eastern English that settled in New England(who are also of Scandinavian origin). The pathological levels of altruism and strong desire for social harmony and egalitarianism of white liberals, when removed from that context, leads them to be endlessly guilt-tripped and taken advantage of by aggressive foreigners that do not share their values and do not have their intellectual capacity to create the wealthyand advanced types of Society that white liberals create.

White liberals created modern Western Cirvilization, but it is the white conservatives that will save it, if anyone will at all. Their higher levels of tribalism and ethnocentrism are paramount to serve as an antidote to the self-destructive pathological altruism of white urban liberals.

I’m an East Coast guy and have never actually been to California except at 30,000 feet, but in the memories of my youth Dana Point was the point of origin for those California Long Range fishing boats that take anglers down around the Baja Sur over 7-21 day trips as advertised in the back pages of Saltwater Sportsman. So for me, Dana Point is a place where guys get together to chuck anchovies at big Yellowfin Tuna in the Pacific.

I’m sure there’s a lot more to Dana Point than this, but it’s what my mind thinks of on the relative rare occasions that Dana Point is mentioned. Funny the way this works, huh?

    Interesting:
Kunstler and Kuby proposed an innovative defense: Ferguson had been driven to temporary insanity by a psychiatric condition they termed "black rage."[30] Kunstler and Kuby argued Ferguson had been driven insane by racial prejudice and could not be held criminally liable for his actions, even though he had committed the killings.[25] The attorneys compared it to the utilization of the battered woman defense, posttraumatic stress disorder, and the child abuse syndrome in other cases to negate criminal liability.[31] Kuby said the notes carried by Ferguson on the day of his arrest demonstrated that Ferguson was motivated by rage during the shootings.[32] Donald E. Belfi, the Nassau County Judge assigned to the Ferguson case, criticized Kunstler for speaking to the media about the proposed defense before it had been examined by a mental health professional. Belfi said "Mr. Kunstler may have many talents, but until he receives his medical degree with a specialty in psychiatry, these types of conclusions should best be left for medical experts and the triers of the facts."[26]

Black rage was first proposed by psychologists William Henry Grier and Price Cobbs in their 1968 book, Black Rage (ISBN 1-57910-349-9). Grier and Cobbs argue that black people living in a racist, white supremacist society are psychologically damaged by the effects of racist oppression. They argue that this damage causes black people to act abnormally in certain situations.

End excerpt. We never got to hear K&K's black rage defense, because their client opted for the "It wasn't me, I wasn't even there" line.

    Replies: @Herbert R. Tarlek, Jr., @Anonymous Jew

It is certainly risky, and I’ve had some bad but not debilitating crashes. But I did many other similarly risky things when I was young.

People associate bikes and greens, but that wasn’t my experience with serious road cyclists. I was on a racing club a couple decades ago – mostly young White guys.

I never did, and never will, bike or run through Diversity. But, as more cases like this demonstrate, sometimes the Diversity comes to you.

High fees are questionable, especially if that doesn't include paying for the safety class not counting ammo. Eight hours hasn't as far as I know been considered "too much," depends on what they do in. But the "interview" is right out, let alone waiting over a year for it.

But as with so many things in our polarizing society it depends on where you are. Half the states in the union with ~36% of the population don't require a permit at all. 42 states and ~72% of the population have shall issue or better concealed carry. It's our modern slave states like your California that'll have to be dragged kicking and screaming into something sane, assuming unlike after Heller and MacDonald the Supreme Court enforces Bruen (somehow, a "randomly" selected "en banc" final Ninth Circuit appeal always rules against you). In the meanwhile they're generally working against existing concealed carry holders by making it illegal to carry pretty much anywhere you'd travel outside your house.

I’m sorry about your injuries. I did a lot of biking for about forty years, and then one day I thought, “Damn, I’ve led a charmed life never having had an accident.” So I decided to quit while I was ahead, and hung up my cleated shoes.

My dad played blackjack for a living for over a year. He did well, but he quit because, he said, "it’s no way to make a living." But… by then, he had paid all his living expenses as well as a new car.

Anyway, I asked him to show me all his tips and tricks to getting ahead on a blackjack spree. Even though I’m not a gambler by nature. He only had a few fairly simple rules, but he said, "you have to always employ what I showed you every time, even if it seems to not make sense, it does in the long run," and "when you’re on a decent run, walk away and cash in in your chips. Don’t defeat yourself."

Cut to: a few years later, I’m at a casino. It's 10 pm. Again, I’m not a gambler, so I decide I’m going to play the $5 blackjack table, but I’m going to play with $20, and after I lose the twenty, I'll quit and go to bed. That, again, was 10 pm. I didn’t leave the table till 5 in the morning. I was ahead $900 at the top of my winnings, and cashed out at $490. Still a good haul for a $20 investment, but I kicked my own ass a bit.

Anyway… as my dad would say, "fate is another name for 'the odds.' The odds are the odds. They don’t care if you go with them, or against them. Respect the odds, even if you don’t want to, and you more likely won’t kick your own ass."

Apropos of our increasingly violent society, we have a new County Sheriff in San Diego who promised to allow a wider access to concealed carry, so I took her up on it. The previous sheriff only allowed his buddies and rich people to carry. I am white, no longer young and use a cane, so I am thug bait. The promise turned out to be something of a bait-and-switch, as the program is still geared towards the prosperous, as there is a $193 fee and an 8 hr safety class required and no interview dates for a year. Perhaps the 2nd amendment is more like a constitutional privilege for the privileged rather than a right.

[San Diego country’s new sheriff’s concealed carry regime has] a $193 fee and an 8 hr safety class required and no interview dates for a year. Perhaps the 2nd amendment is more like a constitutional privilege for the privileged rather than a right.

High fees are questionable, especially if that doesn’t include paying for the safety class not counting ammo. Eight hours hasn’t as far as I know been considered “too much,” depends on what they do in. But the “interview” is right out, let alone waiting over a year for it.

But as with so many things in our polarizing society it depends on where you are. Half the states in the union with ~36% of the population don’t require a permit at all. 42 states and ~72% of the population have shall issue or better concealed carry. It’s our modern slave states like your California that’ll have to be dragged kicking and screaming into something sane, assuming unlike after Heller and MacDonald the Supreme Court enforces Bruen (somehow, a “randomly” selected “en banc” final Ninth Circuit appeal always rules against you). In the meanwhile they’re generally working against existing concealed carry holders by making it illegal to carry pretty much anywhere you’d travel outside your house.

With a working boat yard and ramps for launching working guys’ towed Boston Whalers. Unfortunately ‘developers’ have made it into a wannabe Santa Monica. Cyclist deaths are unfortunately pretty common there…so much so a dedicated cycling lane with concrete separators was made along PCH from DP to San Clemente.

    Replies: @The Anti-Gnostic, @J.Ross

    Interesting:
Kunstler and Kuby proposed an innovative defense: Ferguson had been driven to temporary insanity by a psychiatric condition they termed “black rage.”[30] Kunstler and Kuby argued Ferguson had been driven insane by racial prejudice and could not be held criminally liable for his actions, even though he had committed the killings.[25] The attorneys compared it to the utilization of the battered woman defense, posttraumatic stress disorder, and the child abuse syndrome in other cases to negate criminal liability.[31] Kuby said the notes carried by Ferguson on the day of his arrest demonstrated that Ferguson was motivated by rage during the shootings.[32] Donald E. Belfi, the Nassau County Judge assigned to the Ferguson case, criticized Kunstler for speaking to the media about the proposed defense before it had been examined by a mental health professional. Belfi said “Mr. Kunstler may have many talents, but until he receives his medical degree with a specialty in psychiatry, these types of conclusions should best be left for medical experts and the triers of the facts.”[26]

    Me and the A&E guy.
    (UK, no docs required...)
The Registrar/lead doctor of A&E admitted me - the very same man who I thought had jumped up and down on me.

Turns out he was cycling to his evening shift and saw this jogger fall over. My very sore ribs were teh result of his CPR for 5 mins without success. Fortunately a bystander flagged down a passing police car. I don't know what American police have in the boot of their cars, but here they carry a defibrillator. Without which even the A&E doctor might not have saved me.
My hero rushed off quick to get to work on his bike, and waited to say hello as he admitted me to A&E. Oh and he was little.

There are significant restrictions on where you can carry even with a permit. They are the de jure gun-free zones that invite the illegal use of firearms by those who don’t care about laws and wish no armed opposition.

"... and get exercise at all."

I get exercise by walking and I am sometimes annoyed by obnoxious people on bikes whipping by.

Walking is fine, and I like walking too, James. However, that doesn’t push one’s cardiovascular system.

I don’t have one of those gay bells on my bike, but I used to have a hockey rink/boating air horn clamped onto the front fork. You’d have moved aside, probably. ;-} (OK, that was for cars doing stupid stuff, not people.)

Ferguson will be eligible for parole on August 6, 2309 so the "it wasn't me" defense didn't work either.

Or he’ll be out next year because restorative justice.

All sentences meted out to negroes will be declared null and void. Why shouldn’t justice be retroactive?

Justice should be always and everywhere.

Dana Point used to be kinda middle or even working class--'that dirty town south of Laguna' my father supposedly heard one woman say. With a working boat yard and ramps for launching working guys' towed Boston Whalers. Unfortunately 'developers' have made it into a wannabe Santa Monica. Cyclist deaths are unfortunately pretty common there...so much so a dedicated cycling lane with concrete separators was made along PCH from DP to San Clemente.

I remember it being pretty upscale in the late 1980s, but perhaps I was young and foolish back then.
