There are many different ways of looking at this, and in each Biden looks like a perfect ass. A small diaspora group is going to have periods of significant out-marriage. Especially if it isn’t completely isolated, static, and agriculturally self-sufficient like the Amish or something and rather specializes in commerce and service sector jobs where it has to interact with outsiders.
I think Jewish support for black civil rights wasn’t necessarily due to particular sentimentality for blacks but was incidental. Jews supported general anti-discrimination and minority rights, and blacks happened to be the largest minority group present, so any movement would involve them.

A mostly forgotten (and often vigorously denied here) aspect of the pre-1964 system was that not only blacks but also Jews were discriminated against. (That it is denied is a tribute to the Jew’s great success – people in 2020 find it literally inconceivable that Jews in America, so prominent today, were once the underdogs) Now discrimination against Jews was never as bad or pervasive as anti-black discrimination (Jews fell on the “white” side of the color line legally speaking) but neither was it solely confined to keeping Jews out of just a handful elite golf clubs either. Anti-Jewish discrimination existed in real estate covenants, it existed in employment, it existed in hotels and resorts, it existed in college admissions. Jews thrived despite the discrimination by doing things like setting up their own law firms when the white shoe firms would not hire them. This is not to say that the US was Nazi Germany but under the ethos of the time many Christians felt that they had every right to privately discriminate against Jews if they so desired and they did so desire (some people here STILL believe this). So it was in Jews own self interest to outlaw racial or religiously based discrimination and their interests were aligned somewhat, at least originally.
Now the parting of the ways of Jews and blacks came quite early – for example the 1968 Oceanhill-Brownsville school controversy in NY which brought a black nationalist local school board up against a largely Jewish group of school teachers whose jobs they craved for their buddies. But originally there was a unity of interests.

When Walgreens was found to be assigning black managers to stores in certain neighborhoods on the logic that black customers are better served by managers who look like them, the resulting anti-discrimination case cost the company $24 million to settle. When Ann Hopkins sued Price Waterhouse for sex discrimination for not making her a partner, the court found in Hopkins’s favor because the firm had ignored objective criteria, like dollar value of business brought in, in favor of subjective measures like personality. Race-conscious, colorblind, subjective, objective—the less consistent the law is, the more power left-wing activists have to define what the rules really are. was quite good. But while i’ve a couple German friends, i’ve spent all of two months in Europe my entire life. My analysis of the disaster there is at quite a remove.
In contrast America, i know; the revolution has rolled out in front of me during my life. And from page one Age of Entitlement is on target. Caldwell’s the first person i’ve read who uses a word i thought i’d coined–minoritarianism. He’s seen the same identifiable ideology i see and tagged it the same way. And likewise Caldwell realizes that essentially we’ve had a coup. That there’s a replacement minoritarian–“Civil Rights”–constitution in place.
To me some of his early chapters were so spot on it was almost painful to read–for what we’ve lost, the damage done. (I confess i haven’t finished the book–i should dial back the iSteve and read more. And he probably can’t keep it up or come up with anything profound to say. But the first chapters are solid gold.)
And you get all this counter-minoritarianism from a thoroughly respectible guy–not some hick from the sticks–and without dwelling on the Jewish role in the revolution. It’s as respectible as counter-minoritarianism can get.

This is exactly why the Civil Rights Act was needed – even though Jews were under no LEGAL disability, Christians found ways to do end runs around existing law just as blacks were deprived of their voting rights in an end run around the post Civil War Constitutional Amendments (and Washington looked the other way). Housing covenants (“no tanneries, slaughterhouses or Jews”) arose as a result of legal decisions to the effect that you couldn’t pass laws zoning Jews out of your neighborhood. Since covenants were “private” they were OK. A shitton of discrimination went on under the umbrella of “no legal discrimination”. It was anti-American in spirit and it had to be stopped. You keep posing as the ultra-American but discrimination of this sort is the most UN-American thing that can be imagined. It played right into the hands of the Soviets because it exposed American exceptionalism as rank hypocrisy.
It wasn’t that long, nor was discrimination a dead letter. That Jews had their own clubs and law firms did not take away the sting that there were other clubs and law firms that still excluded Jews. And anti-Jewish discrimination in employment, college admissions and in hotels was not some distant memory – it had ended in most places only a few years earlier and in some places it had not ended at all until the passage of the law. America 1964 was certainly a better place for Jews than America 1934 (the Holocaust had made anti-Semitism a little bit shameful and no longer as respectable as it once was) but discrimination against Jews was not dead to the point that Jews did not benefit from the Civil Rights act directly.
And while Jews were certainly at a different stage than blacks there was a feeling of sympathy – that blacks were where Jews had only recently been. Of course this is the big fallacy of liberal Jews – the idea that blacks and immigrants are just like them, only a little behind them on the ladder. But given time and a little boost they will turn out to be American success stories just like the Jews. Never mind the missing 30 IQ points – those are just environmental.
I’ve given you my position before – Jews are outsized creators of EVERYTHING requiring high IQ, at maybe 7 or 8x their weight in the general population, just as blacks are outsized creators of EVERYTHING requiring low IQ (havoc) in a similar ratio. But once you apply that weight, Jews, being a small minority, STILL only account for maybe 20 or 25% of Nobel Prize winners AND SJWs. Which leaves the other 75 or 80% in WASP hands, both bad and good. But around here (especially from you) it seems like Jews get sole credit for EVERYTHING bad (while OTOH, “we would have developed nukes without them”) . If you are talking about Yellowstone National Park then you seem to forget that it is a major crime to murder someone on “federal property” period.
The feds often let local jurisdictions handle these murders but that is totally discretionary. Ditto for military bases which are federal property.
The bulk of the park is in Wyoming and no one “claims” you can get away with murder at Old Faithful, for instance. A much small part is in Montana too. Why would Idaho fail to assert jurisdiction on its own territory? Much of the state is equally wilderness like the sliver of Yellowstone Park.

Jews were treated discourteously in certain venues, but were not in general suffering. Being Jewish was a problem if you wanted to buy a house in certain places, join a particular club, get a room at a particular resort or hotel, or land a position at an established law firm. (NB, Mario Cuomo discovered the vowels at the end of his first and last name were also a career impediment). The five o’clock shadow was a common practice among my grandparents contemporaries. Calling in the law to address this sort of unpleasantness is setting up a cannon to kill cats. You had some important social problems in 1964, but bias against ethnics wasn’t one of them.
In re the black population, public agencies were the source of much of the trouble they faced, so legal and institutional adjustments were more warranted. Critics of civil rights law (e.g. Robert Bork and Gottfried Dietze) issued warnings about some of the content of these laws at the time. We’ve seen that as implemented, they’ve grown escalatingly stupid. It’s easy to imagine that characters like Joseph Rauh planned it that way all along. Right now what we see in social psychological terms is almost a see-saw. The less interested are rank-and-file people in questions of race, the more the professional-managerial element grows obsessed with them.
That’s a lot like saying that your property isn’t really private since the public’s air wafts over it, so if the government takes your property without compensation, it isn’t really abrogating your property rights. If WASPs hadn’t acted like entitled assholes in the first place it wouldn’t have been necessary to call in the law. They brought this upon themselves by deviating from American founding principles. The kind of anti-Semitism (and anti-immigrant stock discrimination – yes, Italians were treated similarly but there was maybe less friction because there were fewer Italians going to law school, etc.) that became widespread in the 20th century was unknown in the 19th. Some of the clubs that later excluded Jews had had Jewish founders.
This is the whole history of legal intervention in America. Something is free and unregulated and then a small coterie of assholes abuses that freedom and the legal cannons get called in. It happens over and over regarding all sorts of issues because there are always enough assholes to spoil it for the rest of us. Would it really have killed hotel keepers to let Jews into their hotels? What were they going to do, tear the place up? Leave it redolent of garlic? Later on, when they were forced to take Jews nothing happened. Their precious hotels were just fine. They were supposedly afraid that having Jews would scare away the non-Jewish clientele but in reality nobody cared.

I think there are a number of other races that might beg to differ though:

4. Every other race for similar reasons.

People of different subcultures going their separate ways after work. Mainly applies to the Jewish/Christian divide. Say a firm has both Christian and Jewish salesmen, or lawyers, or whatever, but they belong to separate country clubs.

In those days a lot of people who lived in big cities (and not just blacks) lived in ethnic bubbles – if you were Jewish you went to a Jewish doctor, of course a Jewish butcher and baker, a Jewish insurance agent, etc. Everyone in the neighborhood was Jewish so all the children in your kid’s elementary school class were Jewish. If you were Italian, ditto. People of different ethnic groups lived parallel lives where they didn’t intersect much with people of different ethnicities. The post WWII move to the suburbs really broke up the old ethnic enclaves.
Big corporations like Metropolitan Life Insurance had multi-ethnic sales forces, but the Jews sold to Jews, Italians sold to Italians, etc. Pre-WWII, there would not have been many law firms with both Jewish and non-Jewish lawyers. Your firm was usually either one or the other with rare exceptions.
Obviously in rural areas and in the South where Jews were few in number there weren’t enough of them to support this kind of ethnic separation. If your town had a Jewish doctor or pharmacist he was probably the only one in town and everyone patronized him.

It wasn’t necessary. The only people acting like assholes were the shmucks who put restrictive covenants on real estate and the shmucks who enacted the ordinances which made them enforceable. It was the law that was the problem.
As a merchant, you’re generally entitled to restrict your custom. As an employer, you are generally free to hire and promote who you prefer. As a free man you are entitled to choose your friends and set your membership requirements where you will. You’re not behaving in an ‘entitled’ manner by exercising the discretion law and custom and principles of liberty allow.
You have a club, you don’t have given your physical plant an unlimited membership roll. You have to close the rolls at times and some people are going to be blackballed. Who gets blackballed and who does not is always a rough and subjective judgment. Somebody’s gonna feel hurt when you do it. The business about hotels and resorts is ruder and fuzzier, of course.

My own mother and father had among their friends an elderly couple they met in 1955. I don’t remember the names of the other two, but one was the ObGyn who delivered my two brothers and one sister, and the other, a GP, was my Dad’s doctor. Foley is of course a common Irish name (I have Foley cousins.) I believe these two brothers also practiced across the way from the Catholic hospital, but my memory is a little hazy, and I can’t say for sure.
The pediatrician Mom and Dad brought all of us kids to seemed kind of WASPish to me, by the time I was aware of such things, which was not long before I became too old for a pediatrician. Dad, from time to time, saw a Jewish eye, ear, nose and throat specialist, who was an immigrant with a distinct accent. (Mom sent me to him for a prescription for my first pair of glasses.)
The last part is debatable, and the middle part requires some context – our embargos against them and our leadership’s desire to get into WW2 against the wishes of the American people, as long as we didn’t have to fire the first shots.
I don’t think it’s debatable that Japan didn’t surrender before they were nuked but that they did surrender within days of being nuked. I’m not necessarily supporting what we did to them — only that there is little question but that it caused Japan to surrender unconditionally and, in responding to Jack D, pointing out that whites don’t have a monopoly on being either victimizers or victims.

When I was a little kid in Brooklyn, my pediatrician was a Viennese Jewish refugee. Dr. Wagner (pronounced Vagner). I had the feeling that his practice in Vienna before the war was swankier than what he ended up with in Bushwick, Brooklyn but I don’t really know. My wife growing up had a Viennese optometrist too. I went to him once and he would flip between lenses and ask you rapid fire – Betta, Betta? But when I moved to rural NJ my Dr. was an Irish guy named Dr. O’Connor – not a lot to choose from. Thankfully I had an uneventful childhood medically – just the usual sore throats and childhood diseases.

How much the emperor’s intervention owed to which factor is up for debate unless the imperial private archives are opened up, something which I don’t see happening anytime soon. What is not debatable at all is how many more lives an invasion of Japan would have cost, American and Japanese alike. You only need to walk around Okinawa or look at pictures of Iwo (closed Japanese naval base, hard to get to without a good “in”) to get an indelible impression of how utterly nasty that would have been.
Comment timed out before I could add: Truman experienced combat in WWI, making him a rarity among post-Civil War generation American Presidents. Nobody (not even Hitler-why do you think he was such a fan of mobile warfare and tanks over the kinds of pre-WWI traditional charges the IJA favored for too long?) who went through the trenches wanted to put their own men through that kind of inferno again. So, armchair psychology would suggest this played a part in his decision to try anything before an invasion.

The Puritans believed God blessed them with the lands of the New World. Their main justification for seizing Indian land was that indigenous populations were not using the land effectively, so it was their divine right to take that territory.
Now, virtually all Indian tribes recognized the validity of personal property. Individual tribe members were not expected to “share” their horses, weapons, dwellings, and slaves among all other members of the tribe.
However, many tribes did regard land as being communally owned. Carl Watner explores the topic in The Journal of Libertarian Studies:
