My question is: What’s the record for periods of mass hysteria? Do they eventually burn themselves out? And how long can they last? Does the surrounding society revert to “normalcy” afterwards? Or is it crippled or diminished as a result?

Last week the 6-year-old son of my neighbor was not allowed to go home on the school bus, but his father had to be called in because he “made a sign language gesture.” The child is not deaf and dumb.

Is the Coast Guard is the first institutional cave in on a randomly selected “hate gesture”? The whole point of zeroing in on innocent behavior and ascribing loaded meaning is to instill self-consciousness and fear. We flip a lot of birds on commercial electrical projects, I see them flying about like missiles, middle fingers all over the place.
