Here’s something I’ve never seen before: the gaps in Asian – Black school achievement test scores for public school districts with at least 100 tested kids of both groups (from Sean Reardon’s Stanford database).

Nationally, Asian public school 6th graders score at the 7.1 grade level equivalent (equal to the national average student being 10% of his or her way through 8th grade). That’s 3.0 years better than the national average black public school student, who averages 4.1 grade levels (or 10% of his way through 5th grade).

The much more famous white-black gap in the Stanford database is 2.2 years.

The biggest Asian-black gap in the country is in Fulton County, Georgia, which serves suburban schools in Fulton County that are not in the city of Atlanta. Fulton County blacks score pretty well: 4.5 or 0.4 grade levels above the black national average. But Fulton County Asians score a very high 9.4 (2.3 grade levels above the national Asian average of 7.1) and 4.9 grade levels above blacks in Fulton County.

I’m told that Fulton County School District is non-contiguous, with lots of Koreans and Indians north of Atlanta and blacks south of Atlanta.

Generally, the largest Asian-black gaps are found in school districts with pretty good black performance. For example, the seven districts with the biggest Asian-black gaps all have black scores above the national black average. This is probably because high-scoring Asians don’t want to associate with low-scoring blacks.

In contrast, at the other end of the ranking, blacks outscore Asians in Buffalo, NY, where many of the Asians are Burmese refugees.

In the state of Hawaii, Asians outscore blacks by only 0.1 grade levels. This is because blacks score 0.8 grade levels above the black national average in Hawaii (many blacks in Hawaii are their because they or their ancestors were smart enough to pass the military enlistment test), and Asians score 2.1 grade levels below the national Asian average. As I’ve been saying for twelve years, Barack Obama’s Hawaii was not like the rest of the country when it comes to race.

Berkeley, CA, where Kamala Harris claims to have had her life put on the right track due to busing, doesn’t make this list because too few Asian parents choose to send their children to Berkeley’s free schools, despite the San Francisco Bay area’s huge Asian population. The small number of Asians in Berkeley public schools average only 6.1 (1.1 below the national Asian average), which is 2.6 grade levels above Berkeley’s black score of 3.6 (0.5 below the national black average).

The following table reports number of blacks tested, black grade level, and Asian Minus Black Gap.

  3. “Here’s something I’ve never seen before: the gaps in Asian – Black school achievement test scores for public school districts with at least 100 tested kids of both groups”

because no educrats care about that. or any other interesting topic. they only care about one, extremely boring, not even important thing. it is discussed ad nauseum. partly because they are paid to ‘do something’ about it. partly because educrats aren’t all that smart. partly because of cultural marxism.

indeed, not only is the ‘white black’ gap one of the LEAST important things in all of education, it’s one of the least important things on earth. it is totally irrelevant to anything of consequence.

who cares what the average africans are doing with reference to anything. they never did anything in 100,000 years, and they won’t ever do anything in the future either. 100% of the time spent on them is wasted. part of that is by design, pushed by cultural marxists. part of that is due to educrats simply not being that smart, and every generation they repeat the same extremely boring, nonsensical process of trying to turn africans into physicists. leading them to ask zero interesting questions. like what is the difference between the worse performing group and the best performing group, and why.

Finland, here we come. Japan, nah. not gonna study or try to emulate them. somebody post that Drake meme.

  9. Do they have statistics for the Black-Jewish gap?

  10. I’d speculate those districts with more modest Asian-black differentials are those with lots of fresh-off-the-boat Asians.

I recall teaching some of those. They were, of course, reasonably intelligent, and they would work like hell — but it would take them a while to get up to speed. Thoung Duong, for example, got a D+ from me in Algebra I, came back the next year and got a C in geometry, and I’m reasonably confident got either an A or a B in Algebra II the year after that.

It’s actually kind of sad, because it’s people like her that actually could have benefitted from affirmative action — but of course affirmative action isn’t for Asians.

  14. Hey, you forgot to list all the school districts where blacks scored higher than Asians. How about ones where blacks outscored whites?

  15. “Asian” is a very vague term. You really need to distinguish between jungle Asians and city Asians. NE Asians (Chinese, Koreans, Japanese (although there aren’t many here)) won’t even sit in the same classroom with blacks in most cases. In districts with a lot of both blacks and Asians, the Asians in question are going to be jungle Asians.

  16. The most delicious entry in the table is Ann Arbor, MI with the second largest gap.

I believe the size of the gap is due to the presence of many fancy Asians in the school system, which is pretty good. Plenty of funding due to high real estate values.

This is exactly the sort of thing the SJW-infested university would rail against, except that paying attention to anything in a small Midwestern city is so beneath the lofty aspirations of all those coasties from NYC and Long Island.

I would also point out that Ann Arbor itself is more center-left versus the SJW insanity of the university.

  17. One would think people three grade levels apart should not not be in the same classrooms together…but that’s just common sense devoid of an overriding equalist philosophy.

  19. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro district is the one that includes the neighborhoods of profs at UNC Chapel Hill. For many years, it was considered the best public district in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill triangle for “gifted” students and services for such students. “Gifted” being the term of art for kids in the 95% or higher percentiles. Duke University, just a few miles from CH in Durham, has many high IQ parents who chose to live in CH/Carrboro so as to avoid Durham public schools, which are all bad. Even many famillies of tech folks working in Research Triangle Park moved to CH-Carrboro.

The Asians in CH or Durham are largely Northern Asian, though increasingly they have refugees who are Karen or other Southeast Asian jungle ethnicities.

Meanwhile Wake county schools has 120k kids, and includes nearly all of the Triangle suburbs of Cary, Morrisville, and Apex in addition to Raleigh. Morrisville has the highest Indian subcontinent immigrant density in the US, and Indians on the city council. There are also high concentrations of Chinese, Korean and some Japanese foreign workers and immigrants. these are workers in RTP.

these communities have figured out how to work the Byzantine systems of public ed to get their kids into the honors programs and gifted magnets. they also afterschool their kids at places like AoPS academy as well as Saturday Chinese school or Indian school. Their kids have the majority of spots in the local youth symphonies etc.

The Blacks on these areas are not recent Caribbean nor Nigerian immigrants. They’re the descendants of slaves. Many are rural poor blacks, though Raleigh and Durham also have urban ghettos. family formation is non-existent.

The school district of Wake continues to use busing for forced integration. But the Asian immigrants are the only ones who can game it. the priority for the gifted magnet schools are families with low reported income, in bad zip codes, minority race, etc. whites in leafy suburbs are the last on the totem pole.

Chapel Hill has decided this year to kill its gifted program. They have decided the program was not equitable, and they are moving to an equity model, and all kids are gifted so all kids will get enrichment.

it will be interesting to see how the white lefties in CH respond to their kids’ educations being ruined.

Alice is right about Chapel Hill and environs, particularly the leftist politics.

But it is interesting to me that the Chapel Hill-Carrboro district has 7.5% as many students as the Wake school district (12k/160k), but the sample only included 3.7% as many blacks (CHC 109 / Wake 2964).

I believe low income families (including blacks) are pushed out of the Town of Chapel Hill by the property tax regime. The Town of Chapel Hill has property tax rates that are more than twice that of Wake County.

No one is surprised anymore to see the lefties' policies hurting those demographics that they claim to care about.

I was wondering how Durham wound up with a black spelling bee champion (Ethiopian mother, Louisiana Creole father). She attended one of the worst middle schools in the state with plans to attend one of the worst high schools.

NPR did a story on how Durham's George Watts Elementary School became a Montessori magnet school and increased its test scores.

If families live within the roughly 1-mile area around the school, they're given priority over kids who don't. That's why real estate agents are using proximity to the school to sell houses in this gentrifying neighborhood.

It's a stark contrast to the old days, when most students were bused in and Watts was — essentially — a high-poverty, segregated school.

Before the makeover, more than 80 percent of Watts students were black and 8 percent white. Today, 21 percent are black and 37 percent white (35 percent are Hispanic). Roughly 90 percent used to qualify for free- or reduced-price lunch. Since the change, that number has dropped by more than 30 points.

    https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2015/10/27/450903995/forcing-schools-to-hit-the-reset-button

According to Schooldigger, in 2017 George Watts Elementary was 47 percent white, 16 percent black, 30 percent Hispanic, and 4 percent two or more races. 38 percent receive free or reduced lunch.

Alot of college towns. Liberal whites -> generous welfare -> blacks who aren’t that into work. Smart Asians self-explanatory.

Filipinos now score higher than whites on the state exam. In California, Filipinos are a separate ethnic group so it is easy verify their scores.

Percent of 6th graders that met or exceeded standards on the 2018 California state exam:

Seems like it's much more affected by the type of Asian than anything else. Which make sense, Asia's a *big* place. In England, 'Asian' means underachieving Pakistani immigrants and has the opposite connotations it does here.

Isn't any white Russian born east of the Urals technically an "Asian" too? How can Japan and Jordan be considered the same?

Some people have told me(Americans) and people learned in that sort of stuff that Jordanians and other people of the Levant are included in the White category

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro district is the one that includes the neighborhoods of profs at UNC Chapel Hill. For many years, it was considered the best public district in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill triangle for "gifted" students and services for such students. "Gifted" being the term of art for kids in the 95% or higher percentiles.

They're the descendants of slaves.

They have decided the program was not equitable, and they are moving to an equity model, and all kids are gifted so all kids will get enrichment.

it will be interesting to see how the white lefties in CH respond to their kids' educations being ruined.

No one is surprised anymore to see the lefties’ policies hurting those demographics that they claim to care about.

re why fewer blacks in CH/carrboro:

but were Blacks ever in Chapel Hill and Carrboro? I think not in numbers. CH doesn't have industry outside of the university. Blacks were and are in Durham because of sharecropping and tobacco processing after the end of slavery. Tobacco was business.

Carrboro decided in the early 90s that they needed Hispanic immigrants for jobs Americans wouldn't do for no wages. So they purposely encouraged massive illegal and legal immigration from Central America. And in doing so, I believe, pushed blacks out. so you see far more central Americans in the farming and hospitality sector around CH and Carrboro, and other low wage service sectors, where in Raleigh and Durham you still see blacks.

I agree CH had outrageous property taxes, but so does Durham.

I was wondering how Durham wound up with a black spelling bee champion (Ethiopian mother, Louisiana Creole father). She attended one of the worst middle schools in the state with plans to attend one of the worst high schools.

NPR did a story on how Durham’s George Watts Elementary School became a Montessori magnet school and increased its test scores.

If families live within the roughly 1-mile area around the school, they’re given priority over kids who don’t. That’s why real estate agents are using proximity to the school to sell houses in this gentrifying neighborhood.

It’s a stark contrast to the old days, when most students were bused in and Watts was — essentially — a high-poverty, segregated school.

Now that’s interesting. The asian-white gap in California is remarkably large. Especially in math (72% vs 53%) but also in English. Filipinos separately also outperform whites in both categories. So what are the HBD explanations for this data? Is it replicated in other states as well? I am guessing it is.

What’s going on with the whites in Stockton? The Asians there are almost all south-east asian: Filipinos, Vietnamese, Hmong, Cambodian. And they thoroughly trounce the local whites. Filipinos trounce whites 41% vs 17% in math and 47% vs 28% in English. That’s a much larger margin than in the state as a whole. What kind of whites live in Stockton?

Filipinos are like Mexicans or "Hispanics" in that they are mixed ancestry, and unevenly mixed. There are some Filipinos who are mostly Andalusian Spanish, some Catalan, some Moorish, and then there is local input from earlier Arab and Indian immigrants and Southwest Asian and East Asian stock. Chinese had seagoing trade with the Philippines in the 16th century or so, and a lot of silver from the Incas ended up in China via that indirect route.

I have not seen any research on the matter, but it could be that the more clever, more European, Filipinos dominate in immigration to the U.S. Filipinos are one of the top beneficiaries of the United States's "family reunification" immigration system. Japan also has a significant "remittance worker" population of Filipinos, but the family stays home: even visitors visas for relatives are hard to come by in Japan because of the overstays.

Maxwell had nine kids, so give him credit for that.

I had a run-in with Isabel circa 1995 when she and her sister Christine and Isabel’s first husband were operating an early internet search engine. Isabel came into the her husband’s office while I was having a meeting with him and the two got into a cage-match fight in front of me. She is quite the French diva.

Michael Wolff — the Michael Wolff — later wrote a book about his experiences with the filles Maxwell at about the same time, and it explained a lot, assuming what he wrote was true, which is doubtful in light of his Trump book.
