Amid race concerns, UMN curtails crime suspect descriptions

Federal law requires that colleges and universities give timely warnings about serious safety threats on campus, but critics say the U’s routine use of racial descriptors in crime alerts has made campus unwelcoming and less safe for people of color.
University President Eric Kaler agreed, although for some, the change in practice does not go far enough.
In a letter Wednesday to faculty, staff and students, Kaler said he has been persuaded that suspect descriptions “may unintentionally reinforce racist stereotypes of black men and other people of color as criminals and threats.”
Officials now plan to provide no description of a suspect unless “there is sufficient detail that would help identify a specific individual or group.”
A review of 51 crime alerts since 2012 found that suspect descriptions in 15 cases would not have met the new criteria. …
So the change isn’t as extremist as it might sound initially.
Kaler said the crime-alert issue has come up in conversations about campus safety over the past 18 months and that he’s been “moved by the personal experiences conveyed to me.”
The change will help make the U a “welcoming and diverse campus,” he said. …
Jane Kirtley, a professor of media ethics and law at the U’s journalism school, said the new practice is similar to the judgment news organizations make when deciding whether to publicize a suspect’s description.

(1) Preventing a group feeling from arising in Whites. External threats stir feelings of solidarity and cooperation.

Also, despite being the only state to D (or DFL, technically) three times in the 1980s, that same decade saw Minnesota's Senate delegation one of only five or six to be solely GOP-- Durenburger, 1978-95, and Boschwitz, 1978-91.
So the beast is visible under the waves, but hasn't quite surfaced yet.
Also, the talent pool seems rather thin. Tim Pawlenty is probably the most capable of the bunch, and Rudy Boschwitz was once one of the best fundraisers anywhere, before throwing away two of his own elections.
There are too many big corporations here, per capita, as well as a vigorous startup culture, that can draw away business-friendly youth. That also hurts the DFL, but not as much.
For the most part they expurgate racial descriptions in UChicago security alerts.

The CPD considers RACE a necessary component of identification if they have it, so demanding the same from them when IDing them for the general public is certainly a reasonable demand from the taxpayer who is paying their paycheck.

News organizations either use photos, or put the race or some hint of the race in the second-to-last graf.
If it is known that the suspect is black, that in and of itself helps identify the suspect, doesn’t it? For instance, on a campus, maybe one in twenty students is black and one in six staff. That gets you closer to an individual than “gray hoodie” or a height estimate. Would sex be too vague, since it only cuts out half the possible suspects (although only men commit crimes, of course)?

Have students sign up to get either an alert with the full description of suspects or ones with no description "unless there is enough detail to aid in an arrest".

It’ll just result in everyone assuming that all crime suspects are black. Just as everybody assumes that initial reports of, say, a mass stabbing in Germany will simply suppress the fact that the perp is a moslem.
This shows that such policies are virtue-signalling, not attempts to improve matters.
So, every time a crime is committed now people will automatically assume that the criminal is Black.
Simple solution for the students who unfortunately have to be on that campus: Any time a crime is reported near you, just assume the perpetrator is black and avoid all black people in your area.

In general you don't become a major party nominee without being a great politician. Hillary is somewhat of an exception because of nepotism and Bill and Obama's influence.
I agree MN is moving to the right right fast, it will be a secondary swing state in 2020.

Presumably this turn of phrase isn’t meant as irony. After all, the point of the policy is to prevent the community from identifying the group(s) to which protected-class suspects may belong.

Boy, these Minnesotans are behind the times. By the early 2000’s the local newspaper for my southwest Chicago suburb started reporting PONDs (People Of No Description) committing crime in the local Police Beat section. When I first moved into town in the 1990’s the Police Beat mentioned the name, age, and address of the accused. Of course, if you “noticed” things like Steve does you’d see:
– Diverse people committing most of the retail/property theft
– !Vibrant¡ people committing most of the traffic violations (Driving without a current license, registration, and/or insurance while being stopped for DUI)
And well, we can’t be having any of THAT then.
So it became a man arrested for DUI, a woman arrested for retail theft. No name, no age, no address, just a stick figure in handcuffs I guess.
Since we moved out of town and state, the last time I went back and saw a copy of the local newspaper I noticed there was no longer a Police Beat section. So there’s progress, right?

If I read the article correctly, the university is trying to prevent stereotyping of blacks as violent by releasing the descriptions of criminals who they know will be predominately black thereby enforcing the stereotype.

Does hiding information help to prevent people thinking that black men commit more crime? It seems dubious. It violates “rational expectations” since the public know about the censorship, and so correct for it in their own understanding of race and crime. Wouldn’t it require a more secret conspiracy in order to fool the public like this?
The press abides by a very rigid set of censorship guidelines to prevent readers from knowing the race of wrongdoers except where absolutely necessary or unavoidable. I think that these censorship guidelines tend to “leak out” into wider tendencies toward censorship of news related to race and society, and generally degrade the public discussion about race-related issues. It would be better if the press just casually mentioned the race of wrongdoers freely and openly, without any censorship at all. It would sting at first, but would be better in the long run.
That last bit might lessen if TPTB ever realize that pattern increases the accuracy of observing "race not mentioned when someone acts badly" = POC.

Isn’t the heart of ‘diversity’ theory a belief in the legitimacy of racial/gender stereotyping? That different demographics portend indescribable differences?
So is the PC rule that flattering distinctions are the product of ‘diversity’ while unflattering tendencies are overgeneralizations? It is okay to generalize about groups when discussing positive attributes, but not when more unsavory characteristics are at play.

Kerry wasn’t that bad a candidate. Bush had 9-11 and a good economy, Kerry still kept it close. Did a decent job running to the center and focusing on economic issues and not his long Mass liberal record.

As late as the 1950s, hat were a normal part of men’s outerwear, summer and winter. You would no more appear without a hat in public than you would appear without a shirt or shoes – you were not fully dressed without one. People of different social classes might wear different sorts of hats (although in the 20th century there was a major convergence on the Fedora as the hat for all classes) but everyone wore some sort of hat. I think the solution is to add a high end profession to the assailant’s description, just like all the doctors and other professionals in today’s TV commercials are always black. Actually they do. Their school district is about 20% ghetto blacks, most of whom live in an area starting only a few blocks from her house. My nephew got his candy stolen by vibrants on Halloween last year. My sister got her car stolen out of her driveway a few years ago (although she had been foolishness enough to leave her keys in the seat and the door unlocked). She’s pretty nuts lol
One of two things is coming: either the Court functions and slaps down this indefensibly unconstitutional idea that states can impose rules that the Congress cannot on a foundational right, or it dysfunctions and tries to go the other way (which, in the current climate, would guarantee violence).

I saw a video once where somebody took that to heart. The description was only one word, male, so he called the cops on the first guy he saw, a gentleman in his sixties. He said something like, “I found him officer, he matches the description exactly.”
I remember back in the 90s the Cincinnati newspaper had a regular article called “Cincinnati’s most wanted.” I showed the top ten people the cops were looking for. It was ALWAYS 50% black and 50% white. The black perps were wanted for murder, rape, or robbery. The white perps were almost always wanted for far less violent crimes like forgery or mail fraud. Clearly this wasn’t coincidental.

Her eldest child has Asperger’s and he certainly is well aware of how nuts his mother can be.
Her younger son wants to go to the Pacific Northwest for college when he graduates in 2020. I told him that it’s a cesspit of toxic cultural Marxism there but he implied he’s down with that.
The youngest is 11 so who knows. She’s very girly and sassy. She’s a lot like my other sister, whom she adores but who, sadly, is 43 and childless and chronically unhappy. I imagine she will end up more into boys and partying than politics.

Good question. She would probably say she never found a guy she wanted to marry, although she had had live-in boyfriends. My explanation would not please her. In any event, it’s probably not a bad thing, given her psychological pathologies. My parents already have seven grandkids.
