From Times Higher Education in UK:

Adam Rutherford: taking on racism with the help of genetics
Despite its tainted origins, genetics provides many of the essential tools for challenging racist thinking, argues UCL fellow and science broadcaster

February 5, 2020
By Matthew Reisz

There were several reasons why geneticist Adam Rutherford, an honorary research fellow at UCL, felt the time was right to publish a book titled How to Argue with a Racist. …

Furthermore, “a huge recent rise in genetics ancestry kits has had the effect of reinforcing some ideas about biological essentialism which we were trying to erase from genetics”, added the science broadcaster, whose media appearances include his position as presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Inside Science. …

Genetics, in Dr Rutherford’s view, has now fortunately put its past behind it and is indeed a crucial tool in the battle against racism. “There is now a vanishingly small number of geneticists and evolutionary biologists who [dispute] that genetics has clearly demonstrated that race is not a biologically meaningful categorisation,” he said. …Yet, as someone who constantly engages with the public, Dr Rutherford was well aware “of a massive disconnect between what we are saying within the walls of the academy and what people think”. His book is designed to provide ammunition to challenge the views not only of hard-line white supremacists, but also “your slightly racist uncle” and even “basically well-intentioned people who say black people are better at sport or Jews are better at intellectual pursuits”.

… Yet it remained true, Dr Rutherford admitted, that “nobody has seen a white man in the final of the 100-metre sprint in the Olympics since 1980”. So what could be said to people who point to such facts and claim that they reveal, as Dr Rutherford put it, “a natural ability among those descended from the enslaved to be good at explosive-energy sports”?

If that argument was right, he said, “where are such people in sprint cycling or swimming, which has featured one African American in the history of the Olympics?” Similar arguments could be used against those who attributed the striking presence of Jews among composers and performers of classical music to innate talent, while ignoring cultural factors and other genres such as hip hop and jazz.

Even when such notions were seemingly used in a positive sense, Dr Rutherford went on, we must keep in mind links to a long history of offensive stereotyping.

He pointed, for example, to “a study looking at several thousand comments in the media about elite athletic success. These referred to innate physical abilities for a black athlete – and hard work, intelligence and industriousness for a white elite athlete. Such stereotypes are just baked into our culture.”

Rutherford gives me the excuse to count up some more 100 meter dash statistics that I’ve never seen before.

As I’ve been pointing out to the Race Does Not Exist dogmatists for a very, very long time going back to the 1990s, the 100 meter dash provides some interesting data to the contrary. Famously, the last 72 male finalists in the Olympics going back through 1984 have been at least half-sub-Saharan.

However, a couple of other metrics are not quite so racially imbalanced, with more racial diversity. So it’s a bit of a fluke that 72 out of 72 in the Olympics have been black and the streak could well be broken in Tokyo in 2020.

At the World Championships held in between Olympics, one non-black has qualified into the finals in each of the last five championships.

And out of the 143 men in history to have run 100 meters in 9.99 seconds or less, a number have been non-black.

The 10 second barrier has been broken by 988 times by 143 guys as of late 2019.

Times are speeding up recently, so a number of leading Olympic countries such as France, Italy, Japan, and China have come up with indigenous sprinters who have run under 10 seconds.

I count two indigenous European whites (Christophe Lemaitre of France and more recently Fillipo Tortu of Italy of Sardinian ancestry), two Chinese, and two full-blooded Japanese to run under 10 seconds. Japan also has a half-black sprinter under 10 seconds.

The first non-black under 10 seconds in the world was Patrick Johnson of Australia, who is of white and Aboriginal ancestry. (Polish track fans contend that a Pole ran a 9.997 that was rounded up to 10.00 during the Cold War.)

Turkey is represented by a Caucasian from neighboring Azerbaijan, Ramil Guliyev. Britain has a guy named Adam Gemili who is of Moroccan and Persian background who has run 9.97. He too thinks his ancestry is pretty weird for a sprinter.

One of the five South Africans to run under 10 seconds is Wayde van Niekerk, the world record holder in the 400 meters, who is of Cape Coloured origins: they are usually a combination of white, black, Bushman, and Malay. If you saw him on a New York street, you’d probably guess he was, say, Puerto Rican.

On the other hand, nobody who isn’t at least half black has run the 100 meters in under 9.91 seconds. Usain Bolt holds the world record at 9.58 seconds.

The fastest 39 men of all time have been at least half black. Out of the 143 men under 10 seconds, at least 134 have been at least roughly half black, 135 if you count van Niekerk as half black.

Here are men under 10 seconds by country. It’s often argued by Rutherford et al that Nigeria is underrepresented in the 100 meters, which is true compared to Jamaica or Trinidad, but they are still tied with Britain for third most under 10 men in the world, and would be all alone in third if counting the two additional Nigerians who did running for rich Qatar.

There have also been four under 10 sprinters from other West African countries (Ghana and Ivory Coast). There are now 8 sprinters from southern Africa (South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia back in the 1990s). Southern Africa might be the coming thing in sprinting.

USA 57 (all black, I believe; high school senior Matthew Boling’s 9.98 last year was wind-aided)

Jamaica 19

Nigeria 10 (Actually, 12 including 2 running for Qatar)

UK 10 (8 black, 1 mulatto, 1 Moroccan-Persian: Adam Gemili)

Trinidad 6

South Africa 5 (4 black, 1 Cape Coloured (black, white, Bushman, and Malay): Wayde van Niekirk)

Canada 4 (all black)

France 3 (1 black, 1 mixed, 1 white: Christophe Lemaitre)

Japan 3 (2 Japanese, 1 half-black)

Barbados 2

China 2 (both Chinese)

Ivory Coast 2

Cuba 2 (both black)

Ghana 2

Qatar 2 (both Nigerian imports)

Turkey 2 (1 Jamaican, 1 an Azerbaijani Caucasian)

Zimbabwe 2 (black)

Curacao 1

Antigua 1

Australia 1 (half white, half Aboriginal)

Bahamas 1

Cayman Island 1

Italy 1 (white)

Namibia 1

Norway 1 (black)

Oman 1 (black native of Oman)

St. Kitts 1

One could say the same thing about India, and yet they have no runners on the list at all.

To go a step further: There are no white Americans on the list either, despite the fact that they also vastly outnumber Barbadians. (If perhaps not to quite the same extent.)

In America though, those whites who match the Chinese, would have been competing with faster Blacks all their lives and would have been weeded out after high school probably. Whereas the Chinese would have consistently won, until they faced International competition.

Whether or not they’d still hold the same relative positions on the records, it’s worth noting that almost everyone who has ever run 100m faster than 9.80 has been done for doping. Bolt sticks out entirely for his teammates who were the only ones who came close all getting caught and suffering some length of ban. (Bolt’s closest teammate, the second fastest man alive, Yohan ‘The Beast’ Blake, never looked particularly like a man who spent his time training to be sprinter, he looked like a body builder)

So I’d be suspicious of any Jamaican records and their over representation but the dominance of people of West African Bantu ancestry is still there either way. But it is clear that Bolt was doping hard the IOC just gave him a pass because he was so personable and charismatic (And his physique didn’t look like obviously like somebody using roids or other PEDs) he helped to improve the image of the 100m from the years of US dominance of arrogant angry guys who looked obviously like they were doping.

    http://www.track-stats.com/drug-100m-the-fastest-men-and-their-bans/

Greene was never caught but was forced to admit to paying another athlete 10k to buy drugs, but claims innocence of knowing what he was buying which either makes him the dumbest person alive or an obvious lie. He says he was buying them for his friends…

But it is suspicious that both Green and Bolt were parts of teams and eras in their countries when their programs were massively doping. Jamaican’s golden era ended when their drug testing regime came under scrutiny.

Rutherford seems like a Neil deGrasse Tyson sort of scientist. Got the credentials, never really used them, went for media stardom.

Ph.D. in 2002, then left University College London, although a final research publication didn’t make it into print until 2004. He had been studying to be a doctor, but switched to genetics.

Diverse: Half Indian extraction, via South American diaspora.

After his Ph.D. he sinks from sight until 2004 or ’05, when he shows up writing for Nature and from 2008 or so is managing their podcasts for them. He starts to write books and do television appearances.

Although he seems to have landed on his feet as a public science intellectual, the initial web writing and podcast gig seems like a sort of career washout.

INCHEON — Asian competitors are becoming increasingly desperate over African-born athletes running for wealthy Gulf states who have dominated the Asian Games track golds for the third contest in a row.

“I think it’s unfair because they are taller and have a longer stride,” men’s 100 meter silver medallist Su Bingtian told AFP. “They are more powerful and athletic. Physically we are at a disadvantage.”

Among the few white rappers, Jews are again highly overrepresented (The Beastie Boys). They dominate the world of musical theater, and are overrepresented in folk (Dylan, Leonard Cohen) and rock (Lieber and Stoller, Kiss, Lou Reed, Carole King, Neil Diamond, Simon and Garfunkel, the Ramones).

The white American who finished 6th in the 1999 World Championships 200m is Kevin Little. He won gold in the 97 Indoor World Championships and bronze in 89, 93, and 99, but no one cares about indoor games. In the 1980s, his high school of about 1200 students was 98% white with only five blacks.

Coaches don’t discourage white Americans – blacks physically mature faster than whites. Most whites who are successful in sports dominated by blacks (sprinting, NBA, NFL) did not grow up around blacks which gave the whites the chance to develop physically and kept them from abandoning the sport at an early age.

Sally Pearson did not compete against blacks of African descent until 16. (Females reach athletic maturity years earlier than males.)

Among that generation of sprinters, very few did, if they did, it was at high altitude. Same for running under 20 in the 200m, Mennea did so with that time in Mexico City, and the record he broke was also set in Mexico City eleven years earlier by Tommie Smith.

In the 1968 Olympics, held at very high altitude, world records were set in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and long jump, and the last two stood for over 20 years, until 1989 and 1991 respectively. The 100m and 200m records stood until 1983 and 1979. It wasn’t until 1984 that you had a non-altitude sub-10 100m.

But technically it is part of the Netherlands, so I wonder if that has something to do with it. Like, are there Dutch courts, with white judges? I’d be interested if anyone knows.

  40. If there were an effort on the scale of Affirmative Action to find great white sprinters, would the results be better than the athletic equivalent of Michael Eric Dyson or Tehanisi Coates? How would blacks react if races were held, whites visibly lost by a large margin, but were still declared the winners?

    @Steve Sailer

You are correct. Both are pretty darned handsome, in their own way. Italy’s Filippo Tortu is ethnically Sardinian, which, in my book, makes him more of a man of color than Antonio Banderas. France’s Christophe Lemaitre, though… Yep, that dude looks white as Opie. But according to one expert on genetics and running, there is nothing noteworthy about Christophe’s achievement:

**Zoran Denoix, who coaches one of France’s other athletics hopes, the triple jumper Térésa Nzola, was one of the outraged voices. “This is a false debate,” said Denoix. “If one day the Chinese decide to make a guy run the 100m in less than 10 seconds, they will do. It is clear there is no genetic or other thing. It’s just the kind of work you put in.”**

    I guess that settles it.

  42. I don’t care for sports, but: why not segregate sport disciplines along racial lines, the same way it’s been for sexes/genders?

We all know that blacks are better at jumping & short distance running, but are bad at swimming; also, east Asians have uncanny advantage in acrobatic gymnastics. Of course, most sports wouldn’t be segregated, but some- or a non-negligible part- would be.

Why, for instance, the Japanese should be deprived of the basketball professional league, just because they’re short?

Iovine is Italian. His sister had a Jewish friend who was a pretty successful songwriter, Ellie Greenwich (“Chapel of Love”) who got Jimmy a low-rung job at a NY music studio. That was his start.

Ellie Grenwich and Jeff Barry wrote a lot of girl group stuff and were part of the Brill Building songwriting millieu:

During 1967, Greenwich formed Pineywood Music with Mike Rashkow,[8] and over the next few years the Greenwich-Rashkow team wrote and/or produced recordings for Greenwich herself as well as for Dusty Springfield, the Definitive Rock Chorale, the Other Voices, The Fuzzy Bunnies, and the Hardy Boys. Also in 1967, Greenwich recorded her first solo album, Ellie Greenwich Composes, Produces and Sings, released in 1968, which produced two chart hits, “Niki Hoeky” (#1 in Japan) and “I Want You to Be My Baby”. Additionally, Greenwich continued to provide background vocals and vocal arrangements for diverse artists such as Dusty Springfield, Bobby Darin, Lou Christie and Frank Sinatra, as well as Electric Light Orchestra, Blondie, Cyndi Lauper and Gary U.S. Bonds. She did studio work for her ex-husband as well, singing backgrounds for Andy Kim, who was recording for Barry’s Steed Records, and the Archies.[citation needed]

At one such recording session, Greenwich met Steve Tudanger, with whom she and Steve Feldman would later form the company Jingle Habitat to write and produce jingles for radio and television. Tudanger and Feldman also co-produced Greenwich’s second LP, Let It Be Written, Let It Be Sung, in 1973. Her song “Sunshine After the Rain” was a hit in the UK for singer Elkie Brooks. It was produced by Leiber and Stoller and taken from the Elkie Brooks album, Two Days Away. In 1973 Greenwich sang back-up for Debbie Harry on the song “In The Flesh” for Blondie’s self-titled debut album “Blondie”. After her partnership with Rashkow ended in 1971, Greenwich collaborated with writers such as Ellen Foley and Jeff Kent; the Greenwich-Kent-Foley team penned “Keep It Confidential”, a hit for Nona Hendryx on the R&B charts in 1983. That same year, “Right Track Wrong Train”, which Greenwich wrote with Kent and Cyndi Lauper, was the B-side of Cyndi’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, which hit No. 2 on the U.S. charts, and spent three weeks at Number One on the Australian charts.[citation needed]
    Legacy

Greenwich’s affiliation with Ellen Foley and Nona Hendryx indirectly led to a Broadway show that resurrected her 1960s music. When Foley and Hendryx performed at The Bottom Line cabaret in New York City, Greenwich was there to see them. The Bottom Line owner Allan Pepper convinced Greenwich to meet him and discuss putting together a revue showcasing her hits. In 1984, Leader of the Pack, a show based on Greenwich’s life and music, opened at The Bottom Line. Greenwich appeared as herself in the second act, which focused on her early years in Long Island and her marriage and partnership with Barry. The show was revamped for Broadway and opened at the Ambassador Theater the following year. Cast members included Greenwich, Darlene Love, Annie Golden, Dinah Manoff as young Ellie, and Patrick Cassidy as Jeff Barry. Leader of the Pack was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical[16] and a Grammy Award for the cast album, and the play garnered The New York Music Critics’ Award for Best Broadway Musical. During the 1990s and into the new millennium, the musical has enjoyed several revivals and continues to be performed at schools and community theaters. Leader Of The Pack is still performed all over the world.

In 1991, Greenwich and Barry were inducted together into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2004, Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest rock songs included six Greenwich-Barry compositions, more than any other non-performing songwriting team.[17] In 1964 alone, the duo were responsible for writing 17 singles that reached the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

On December 15, 2009, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced that Greenwich and Barry would receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award in March 2010 (which was posthumously awarded to Greenwich) for helping to define the Brill Building sound.[18] At the ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria, which was telecast on the Fuse TV cable network, Carole King inducted Greenwich, Barry, and other songwriting colleagues from the 1950s and early 1960s, including Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, Otis Blackwell (also posthumously), Mort Shuman and Jesse Stone. Ellie’s award was accepted by her sister Laura, while Barry’s acceptance was read by Steve van Zandt.[19]

On May 7, 2013 a “Garden of Ellie” that contains a statue of Greenwich was placed next to Hofstra University’s music school. The sculpture was commissioned by Greenwich’s family and created by Peter Homestead.[20]
    Death

On August 26, 2009, Greenwich died of a heart attack at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, New York City, where she had been admitted a few days earlier for treatment of pneumonia.

Good point; the list would probably get even darker if you required the runners to have gone sub 10 more than once

White women are actually underrepresented in pornography. Hispanics and Asians far outnumber them in the industry, even black women are proportionally overrepresented compared to white women.

Found the real problem: Rutherford, who is half Guyanese Indian

Absolutely. He has a complex racial make-up, and it`s clearly given him a complex.

Rutherford is a welcome guest at the Guardian, and is in good company. They have several mixed-race writers and their background comes through in their columns.

My favourite is actually Afua Hirsch who has been driven mad by her background – she seems to have three strands, English educational elite, Jewish educational elite and wealthy black African.

In fact as a generality, the Jewish/black female is a pretty poisonous creature.

  56. @Bardon Kaldian

Why, for instance, the Japanese should be deprived of the basketball professional league, just because they’re short?

No need to racially segregate ; just have the hoop say 1 meter off the ground. Then even dwarfs could be good.

In fact tall people would be at a disadvantage.

Hey, I think I`ve hit on something here. There should be a game called holeball. Same rules as basketball, except that the basket is replaced by a hole in the court floor.

  57. @JohnPlywood

Doubtless so. Where, oh where, are the lawsuits claiming disparate impact?!

Meb isn’t a ringer he came to the US as a child refugee not a runner.

Paul Chelimo is a ringer. He came to the US to run in college. He then joined the US Army to accelerate his quest for US citizenship. His training was funded by the US Army World Class Athlete Program.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Chelimo

  59. Ramil Guliyev is not Turkish, he just runs for Turkey because his home country has no track & field program worth anything.

Devin Quinn might run under 10 at Olympic Trials this summer. John Teeters almost certainly would have by now, but it looks like he quit track 2 or 3 years ago, which is probably the smart thing to do.

Boling will run under 10 within the next 2 years, unless the Georgia coach is an idiot.

there’s a bunch of other guys like Emile Erasmus who are down at 10.01, but i don’t know what they’re doing. if they’re still running, did they switch to rugby, quit, whatever. lots of guys get to 10.0 and then quit.

I have been reliably informed that US black athletes can often give leading (foreign ? ) white athletes a hard time in wait rooms and warm up facilities .Exposure to this particularly for young females can be upsetting and does put many off the sport.
Of course when cameras are present butter wouldn’t melt in their mouths

So maybe best for white girls to avoid competition against blacks until it becomes unavoidable

Jews are again highly overrepresented . . . and rock (Lieber and Stoller, Kiss, Lou Reed, Carole King, Neil Diamond, Simon and Garfunkel, the Ramones).

Out of the Ramones only Joey (Jeffrey Hyman) & Tommy Erdelyi were Jewish. Johnny (Cummings) & Dee Dee (Colvin) were both goys. Dee Dee had a German mother and an American G.I. father & spent a large part of his childhood in Germany. He wrote most of their songs and he was the one that came up w/the Nazi imagery of some of their lyrics. Marky Ramone (Bell), who became their main drummer after Tommy left, was of Belgian heritage.

  62. Surprised there aren’t more women on the list!!! Everyone in the ad industry knows women are higher IQ, faster, stronger & better than men.

Even the great Irish-Amerjcan Henry Ford knows that & how honest the scots-irish are. That’s why his new ad shows a frumpy bald ‘female’ boxer knocking out a male boxer. We can see how strong they are with the black-as-spades, northern as a dumb rock, frumpy as a dungaree-wearing obese sjw at a kdlamg concert winning gold. Bet the only reason she wasn’t allowed to take on the men is the patriachu would be too embarrassed!

It’s not like the (((ARSE))) ate shyster swarthy rats who tell 6 million lies per ad! iIRC every uppity bull who takes on a man in the Ant Middleton show has knocked him spark out!!!!!!

In the US, the top 13 and 14 year-old boy teams can run faster than the Polish women.

  65. @Triumph104

I remember hearing that Germany’s track and field team in the 1990’s apparently offered Steffi Graf an opportunity to run on their national 4×400 relay team, if she were willing to give up tennis for a year and a half. They thought she could help them win the gold in the Olympics, she certainly looks like a lot like a long sprinter.

  66. OT–if not a subject for a future iSteve piece– but, why does that tight little island called the Dominican Republic supply professional baseball (especially The Show) with so many players? Unlike hockey–a Canadian export still dominated by Canadians (though in increasingly shrinking numbers interestingly enough)–baseball didn’t originate either in the D.R. or in Latin America in general.

In the past 2 decades in the NBA the white players are now mostly European. Seems that even though basketball isn’t as popular in Europe as it is in the U.S., European kids are allowed to develop unlike here where high school coaches are looking for the next Michael Jordan or LeBron James.

There are actually slightly more American Whites than European Whites(48 to 47) in the NBA by my count. Based on popularity of basketball in the USA one would expect many more though.

  71. “where are such people in sprint cycling or swimming, which has featured one African American in the history of the Olympics?”

Blacks have denser bones and less buoyancy for swimming.

Regarding cycling, especially track, it is poorly compensated (Euro road pro superstars can make big money, but in the US journeymen pros make less than schoolteachers), velodromes are rare and expensive, and racing bikes cost more than sneakers (and are much more likely to get stolen in the hood). Also, urban areas where a lot of blacks live are bad for finding safe routes to ride. There is probably a lot of black athletic talent that would be good at cycling, particularly sprints, but why do it when there is so much more money, fame, and college scholarship opportunity elsewhere?

With a career from 1898-1910, Marshall “Major” Taylor was a world champion black cyclist who competed in the US and Europe:
    http://www.majortaylorassociation.org/who.shtml
Back then, track cycling was a leading spectator sport in attendance and money.

  72. I looked up Adam Rutherford’s Wikipedia profile specifically seeing if it mentioned him playing and or coaching a sport. It didn’t. To those who have participated or coached a sport for a significant amount of time know that some players/participants have “it” and others despite years of training and dedication never quite obtain that top elite level. As a former collegiate swimmer and coach, I can spot “it” pretty quickly and at a young age. The old adage in many sports “you can’t coach height” and many other physical factors.

Maybe because there are a lot of athletic mulattos with not much other career prospects there? Success at beisbol gets you off the island, a lot of money, and white p***y. So even though odds are long, what else are you going to do? If you have a 95 IQ, are fleet of foot and have some upper body strength, and the alternative is, basically, ass busting manual labor for peanuts-why not roll the dice and bust your ass on the baseball diamond instead?

In the US a 90-95 IQ, presentable, clean mulatto could, umm….probably get an affirmative action professional degree and a sinecure with some government agency. A 105 IQ mulatto could probably have a career with most of a decade spent in this really nice big house in DC, over on Pennsylvania Avenue, so why work that hard at sports?

I had a neighbor, a fine lad of Irish descent, who appeared to be a budding basketball star. When this boy was no older than 16, his father told me that he had already started getting offers from college basketball teams. I’ve been tempted to request an autographed photo of this boy, thinking how cherished and valuable such an object could become should he become famous one day. But I never did so.

Why? First and foremost, I feared that by making such a request, I would at least implicitly be endorsing and encouraging the pursuit by this boy of a career in basketball. And I did not feel I could do that in good conscience after hearing how anti-White the culture of the NBA appeared to be. Let me note here the first irony of this situation. Namely, that I, a conspicuous Jew, am almost certainly far more appreciative of the reality of anti-(non-Jewish) White hostility and opposed to it than these non-Jewish White neighbors of mine. (Of whom there can be little doubt that they are, at a minimum, solidly Respectable, decidedly cucked Goodwhites.)

    @George Taylor

Adam Rutherford’ is simply a fool who understands neither sports nor physiology (to be fair, neither do most coaches). There really isn’t such a thing as “explosive-energy sports”. Explosivity is not an intrinsic quality of muscles. Explosivity is the result from force applied to mass. Large force applied with advantageous leverage on small mass results in an explosive movement.

Explosivity is an effect, not a cause.

That so called fast twitch muscles (really a continuum, the classification is arbitrary) produce explosive energy is because they produce more force. They are equally advantageous in slow movements that demand huge force: e.g. a one rep max bench press.

This should really be obvious when you consider that explosive events like 100m dash, the shot put, and the vertical jump are not really characterized by particularly fast movements. I’d say most guitarist, drummers and pianists move body parts with much higher velocity. But they don’t need much force and hence don’t depend on large “fast twitch” muscles.
