Really, the mystery of all this was solved with something an iSteve regular said to me in this very medium awhile back. The key to understanding it all is that the undergraduate college student population is now heavily women. Daddy didn’t care about college sex when it was his son going off to college, but when it’s his daughter, oh no, he isn’t having any of that. It’s the ages-old cultural double standard between “daddy’s boys” and “daddy’s girls.” So now it’s time for the fathers of college women to get together and foment a “rape culture” paranoia/hoax as constant steady moral preaching to college men not to touch college women.

By this logic, the current hysteria over frat boys having their way with drunken coeds would be another aspect of Helicopter Parenting.

    What about all-girls colleges?

BTW, get this: “I am not a boy. I am a woman, and today I find myself demeaned.”

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2015/01/29/a-u-va-sorority-sister-has-this-to-say-about-being-told-to-stay-away-from-fraternity-parties-on-saturday/

It seems to me that today, on the contrary, young women demean themselves far more than are demeaned by others.

    • Replies: @Jonathan Silber
For all their big talk about being "empowered" and "strong" and "independent," many women are inclined to speak of themselves, and to act, as if they lack all responsibility or agency in their own lives, as if rather their lives are under the control of others, or of unknown, impersonal forces: so they speak like this sorority girl who "finds" herself demeaned, just as other women speak of "finding" themselves under the influence of drugs and alcohol, of "finding" themselves naked in bed with a man they scarcely know, of "finding" themselves feeling as if the sex they willing engaged in, months or years ago, actually was a rape.

In this disinclination, or unwillingness, of theirs to take responsibility for their own emotions and their own actions, such women are akin to the insane, whom, for criminal misdeeds, the law removes from society and locks up in asylums, to protect the normal, sane people.

Here is a father looking like an older Barack Obama who found an alternative to college for his daughter.

  3. “This is democracy in a consummate form that defies further perfection, since nothing conforms more exactly to the ‘general will’ than the legislative abolition of reality, and nothing delivers the hemlock to reality more definitively than the coupling of Teutonic interest rates with East Mediterranean spending decisions. Live like Hellenes and pay like Germans — any political party that failed to rise to power on that platform deserves to scrabble for vulture-picked scraps in the wilderness. It’s the ultimate no-brainer, in just about every imaginable sense of that expression. What could possibly go wrong?” http://www.thedarkenlightenment.com/the-dark-enlightenment-by-nick-land/

I thought Rolling Stone would be in the land of vulture-picking by now because guitar picking was so boring, why not write about rape? What could possibly go wrong?

If you adjust for race, white girls these days may be holding off sex longer than any generation since the 40's. And if you further adjust for the presence of married parents at home, white girls from intact families these days may be the least sexually active in a century. And it seems like that when they do, it is often episodic one-offs, rather than regularly with steady boyfriends.

  5. “‘Hate’ is a word to pause over. It testifies with special clarity to the religious orthodoxy of the Cathedral, and its peculiarities merit careful notice. Perhaps its most remarkable feature is its perfect redundancy, when evaluated from the perspective of any analysis of legal and cultural norms that is not enflamed by neo-puritan evangelical enthusiasm.

A ‘hate crime’, if it is anything at all, is just a crime, plus ‘hate’, and what the ‘hate’ adds is telling. To restrict ourselves, momentarily, to examples of uncontroversial criminality, one might ask: what is it exactly that aggravates a murder, or assault, if the motivation is attributed to ‘hate’? Two factors seem especially prominent, and neither has any obvious connection to common legal norms.

Firstly, the crime is augmented by a purely ideational, ideological, or even ‘spiritual’ element, attesting not only to a violation of civilized conduct, but also to a heretical intention. This facilitates the complete abstraction of hate from criminality, whereupon it takes the form of ‘hate-speech’ or simply ‘hate’ (which is always to be contrasted with the ‘passion’, ‘outrage’, or righteous ‘anger’ represented by critical, controversial, or merely abusive language directed against unprotected groups, social categories, or individuals). ‘Hate’ is an offense against the Cathedral itself, a refusal of its spiritual guidance, and a mental act of defiance against the manifest religious destiny of the world.” http://www.thedarkenlightenment.com/the-dark-enlightenment-by-nick-land/

Rape, plus ‘hate’ and that adds more time to the charged. Here is America and here is tragedy.
    Here is the cost!

“What does it mean to say that a great writer can’t write?

Consider just one kind of botch, the writing, in “An American Tragedy,” about sexual obsession:

So captivated was he by this savor of sensuality and varietism that was about her, the stigmata of desire manifest in her gestures, moods, voice, the way she dressed, that he could not think of relinquishing her. ” http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2003/04/21/the-cost-of-desire

    He hated writing?

“In Philadelphia, Frank Cowperwood, whose father is a banker, makes his first money passing by an auction sale, he successfully bids for seven cases of Castile soap, which he is sells to a grocer the same day with a profit of over 70 percent. Later, he gets a job in Henry Waterman & Company, and leaves it for Tighe & Company. He also marries an affluent widow, in spite of his young age. Over the years, he starts misusing municipal funds with the aid of the City Treasurer. In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire redounds to a stock market crash, prompting him to be bankrupt and exposed. Although he attempts to browbeat his way out of being sentenced to jail by intimidating Mr Stener, politicians from the Republican Party use their influence to use him as a scapegoat for their own corrupt practices. Meanwhile, he has an affair with Aileen Butler, a young girl, subsequent to losing faith in his wife. She vows to wait for him after his jail sentence. Her father, Mr Butler dies; she grows apart from her family. Frank divorces his wife. Sometime after being released, he invests in stocks subsequent to the Panic of 1873, and becomes a millionaire again. He decides to move out of Philadelphia and start a new life in the West.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Financier
    http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1840

After the Wall Street crash, you had to think that maybe the financiers hated finance as well as the public forced to cover their losses. Now it’s business as usual and keep your gains and dump the losses on the public.

“Frank only stared. Too bad he had missed this. The least touch of sorrow
for the squid came to him as he stared at it slain. Then he gazed at the
    victor.

“That’s the way it has to be, I guess,” he commented to himself. “That
squid wasn’t quick enough.” He figured it out.

“The squid couldn’t kill the lobster–he had no weapon. The lobster
could kill the squid–he was heavily armed. There was nothing for the
squid to feed on; the lobster had the squid as prey. What was the result
to be? What else could it be? He didn’t have a chance,” he concluded
finally, as he trotted on homeward.

The incident made a great impression on him. It answered in a rough way
that riddle which had been annoying him so much in the past: “How is
life organized?” Things lived on each other–that was it. Lobsters lived
on squids and other things. What lived on lobsters? Men, of course!”

“”Well, you might have named him after me. There’s something to this boy.
How would you like to come down to Cuba and be a planter, my boy?”

“I’m not so sure that I’d like to,” replied the eldest.

“Well, that’s straight-spoken. What have you against it?”

“Nothing, except that I don’t know anything about it.”

    “What do you know?”

The boy smiled wisely. “Not very much, I guess.”

“Well, what are you interested in?”

    “Money!”

“Aha! What’s bred in the bone, eh? Get something of that from your
father, eh? Well, that’s a good trait. And spoken like a man, too! We’ll
hear more about that later. Nancy, you’re breeding a financier here, I
    think. He talks like one.””

Now we are going to have more breeding Cubans and fewer financiers. US will be covering more losses and Cuba if anything is all losses. New ratlines are needed.

  6. “Because grievance status is awarded as political compensation for economic incompetence, it constructs an automatic cultural mechanism that advocates for dysfunction. The Universalist creed, with its reflex identification of inequality with injustice, can conceive no alternative to the proposition that the lower one’s situation or status, the more compelling is one’s claim upon society, the purer and nobler one’s cause. Temporal failure is the sign of spiritual election (Marxo-Calvinism), and to dispute any of this is clearly ‘hate’.

This does not compel even the most hard-hearted neo-reactionary to suggest, in a caricature of the high Victorian cultural style, that social disadvantage, as manifested in political violence, criminality, homelessness, insolvency, and welfare dependency, is a simple index of moral culpability. In large part – perhaps overwhelmingly large part – it reflects sheer misfortune. Dim, impulsive, unhealthy, and unattractive people, reared chaotically in abusive families, and stranded in broken, crime-wracked communities, have every reason to curse the gods before themselves. Besides, disaster can strike anyone.” http://www.thedarkenlightenment.com/the-dark-enlightenment-by-nick-land/

The rape card is the new race card and it’s going to be played. We need excuses, we have a disaster of a society.

  7. We have a war on Christmas, we don’t have a war on rape though!
“At the limit of self-parody, neo-puritan parricide takes the form of the ludicrous ‘War on Christmas’, in which the allies of the Cathedral sanctify the (radically unthreatened) separation of Church and State through nuisance agitation against public expressions of traditional Christian piety, and their ‘Red State’ dupes respond with dyspeptic outrage on cable TV shows. Like every other war against fuzzy nouns (whether ‘poverty’, ‘drugs’, or ‘terror’), the outcome is predictably perverse. If resistance to the War on Christmas is not yet established as the solid center of Yuletide festivities, it can be confidently expected to become so in the future.” http://www.thedarkenlightenment.com/the-dark-enlightenment-by-nick-land/

  8. Ironically, given the draconian rules the SAVE act put into place, it would be safer today for a college boy to date a high school girl so long as he doesn’t violate the four-year rule (AKA “Romeo and Juliet” law) that applies in most states.

I bet some frats have already figured that one out. Somehow, I can’t imagine college girls being very happy about that.

    Lot,

I think you are on to something.

I read something and remember Rush Limbaugh commenting recently on it as well, that bars, clubs and music venues that depended on the white middle class college and recent graduate set are having a hard time financially. These establishments where young people use to meet are either going belly up or now catering to the lower classes aka Hip-Hoppers.

Hard economic times, the reality that women, despite the decades of feminist rhetoric, really do need a man with a stable job and they are harder to find, has dampened sexual activity.

The huge burden of student loan debt, a crappy labor market that wants to dispose of them by age 35, and still ridiculous housing cost mean the young feel they will never be ready for serious(sexual) adult relationships.

Men in their early to mid twenties seem to living at home stuck in Bromances, bonding over sports and video games as if they are still in middle school knowing they are no where near where their dads were economically at the same age.

Steve should write articles contrasting what is was like to be young and enter the labor market during the Reagan Recovery years vs today.

What I remember of those days was that college age people and recent grads where channelling their optimism about their futures into lots of partying, dating and relationship activity, in other words they were having sex. Something that young people with healthy hormones, a little money to spend and confidence about their prospects tend to do. And yes despite what most prudes think, this tends to lead, at least among the middle class, to marriage and family.

Just think about how decadent the music of the eighties was, despite all the "AIDS equally threatens straights as well as gays" propaganda. When I think back to the mid to late eighties I remember bands like Poison,
"Nothin But a Good Time" and Tawny Kitaen and David Coverdale cavorting in a Jaguar being part of the Zeitgeist.

There would be no better talking point for conservatives to use to get young middle class people who came of age during the Obama nightmare to rebel against PC brainwashing then to remind them that their parents back in the Reagan years most likely had a vastly better sex life than they are having today.

That would be a whole lot better than Bill O'Reilly with his idiotic nonsense bellowing over Catholics being outraged over Obama's birth control mandate and showing up to vote for Romney.

Perhaps, this is true, but 1) they are also delaying other important aspects of life such as family formation to the detriment of society, not only demographically, but we need stable families to create any kind of community at all and 2) the reasons for their delay of sex are different in a way that leads to different kinds of long-run anti-social behavior.

I've seen this data, but I remain unconvinced for the following reasons:

    1. The data is self-reported, obviously skewed.
    2. The data does not match with the social media and other "confessions" of young women endlessly writing/talking about themselves and their experiences. Which constantly refer to losing their virginity and engaging in sex at around age 15-16 [this for White, UMC girls].
    3. The data does not conform to the experiences of young men who note sexual activity among their female peers beginning around age 15-16.

IMHO, what has happened is that condoms/the pill radically reduced pregnancy to all but the most chaotic and low future time orientation girls.

Personal anecdote, at the local Rite Aide two years ago a Latino girl age 15 maybe is at the counter with her Mom brag/boasting/inquiring about "the morning after pill" with a big grin on her face.

I just fail to see in today's Kardashian world how society suddenly changes young White women with ample opportunity and unsupervised time to stop having sex. Maybe mind rays from fathers at work do it, I dunno. I certainly don't see in the media a lot of messages aimed at young women that having sex at a young age marks them with the spot of loser. Quite the opposite -- CW, MTV, all push the opposite message.

My perspective on the campus rape panic is that it is aimed at preventing beta males in college from even making a MOVE on women of average looks whose egos/sex market status is artificially inflamed by the obesity epidemic removing female competition.

IF (thought Experiment) most women were fit and active, very few obese, and there was a very small pool of men nearly all who were Alpha, would we see the campus rape panic or the female competition for the best men?

Beautiful women don't engage in these things -- they have no status anxiety as men have been ogling them since puberty. Beautiful women don't get angry at nerds asking them for coffee in an elevator -- they are so intimidating that they never get asked and don't have status anxiety anyway. Its the middling women, attractive but not beauties, who can occasionally sleep with Alpha males via obesity epidemic reducing the supply of attractive women who engage in this stuff.

Viewed in market terms it is a ploy to reduce beta male attention by women who resent it (those who are average in looks) to clear the way for Alpha males.

    Absolutely.

Since the median number of lifetime sexual partners for American women is supposedly 2 (the mean is 7), at least half of American women only have had two or fewer partners in their whole lives.

There are still many virtuous women left who do not fornicate habitually.

If you were a young man and smart, you'd marry one of those, rather than the minority of hyper-slutty women who set the mass cultural tones ("Sex and the City," "Girls").

  12. I’ve wondered whether the manufactured military rape crisis is a subversive plan to keep women from enlisting, particularly since women can now serve in combat positions.

  13. If this theory is correct, then why has there been no uproar about the Vanderbilt story? What, dads freak out at the thought of a white guy making out with their daughter after she’s had a few beers, but don’t mind their little girl being gang raped by a of bunch of black guys?

  14. Interesting thought and I’m sure it’s a component of the Two-Million Minutes Rape Panic coalition, but it’s not the driver. On some level of the psyche the straight female students seek this freak-out, and the lesbians push on it as fellow travelers. Also there isn’t a neat enough social cleft between the anxious-aspirational dads of college boys and the protective-warden dads of college girls for the latter to buy into this completely. I’d be interested to see some fresh research on whether modern non-psycho-third-worlder dads actually do expect daughters to be chaste through 4-5 years of college leisure. Emotionally it’s just not the same after the day when she moves out of your house.

  15. The entire sexual assault brouhaha…..(hahahha) seems to have begun directly from the top.

The DOE sent around a letter in 2012 saying all institutions of higher learning, in order to be in compliance with title IX (and get the 20% of their total funding from the Feds) had to change their sexual assault standard.

It went from 75% certainty to 50.1 % certainty. From a ‘clear and convincing’ to a ‘preponderance of the evidence.’ It went from (I guess) a criminal standard of certainty to a civil standard of certainty. Good luck, guys.

It seems the standard went from ‘he said, she said’ to SHE SAID.

This was a top down move to placate the Dems’ female constituency. So not only is college attendance approaching 60% female, the guys have also had their bo**rs whittled back a few inches by regulatory action. Be careful out there guys, just keep repeating the phrase ‘preponderance of evidence.’

    The Wrong Standard

    November 6, 2014
    By Jake New

Princeton University reached an agreement with the Department of Education Wednesday to end a civil rights investigation into how the university handles cases of sexual assault on campus. Princeton was found to be in violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the department said, for “failing to promptly and equitably” respond to complaints of sexual violence and for using a higher standard of proof than what is permitted by the department.

Princeton was the last Ivy League institution — and a rare prominent institution — to still use the “clear and convincing” standard instead of the “preponderance of evidence” standard in adjudicating sexual assault cases. Where the clear and convincing standard of proof requires a roughly 75 percent chance that the accused is responsible, preponderance of evidence, which is the standard used in civil cases, requires a 50.1 percent chance. In order to comply with Title IX, Princeton adopted the lower standard in September, appeasing the department’s Office for Civil Rights and helping to end the investigation.

  16. That’s an interesting hypothesis, but I doubt it. The origins of campus rape hysteria began in the early 1990s with “date rape” and was driven by academic feminists and administrators.

I’ve never observed universities to care much about parents’ opinions.

  17. josh says:

Helicopter parenting is too pejorative. In all fairness, college parties are disgusting. “Dancing” involves a kind of mutual masturbating, rubbing genitalia together to the grunting of some illiterate barker. In my day, it was classics like “Shake dat ass” and “You can do it, put your ass into it”. There is absolutely no concept of courtship whatsoever. Like most students, I was young enough and naive enough to not realize how demented this entire social scene was. Something really needs to be done.

  19. The comment is a good example of a hypothesis awaiting evidence. I am skeptical simply because I do not sense that fathers of co-eds have much to do with the hysteria. Prove it.

  20. The Republican Party should make a political issue against the new Title IX requirements that all colleges subject male students to kangaroo-court proceedings conducted by “diversity experts”.

Those requirements have not been shoved into effect by fathers of college-age daughters. Rather, the shovers have been female zealots who spit on the concern that many innocent men’s lives will be ruined by this new regime.

The Republican Party should advocate for single males as energetically as the Democratic Party has been advocating for single women. The Republican Party should anger men so they will vote just as the Democratic Party has been angering women.

I have a dream that the Republican Party will nominate Scott Walker and that he will lead the party out of the wilderness by turning millions of young men from being non-voters into being life-long Republican voters.

  22. I don’t dispute the verdict in the Vanderbilt rape case, but the public should put this case into a proper perspective.

The three main characters — Brandon Vandenburg, Cory Batey and the woman — all were extremely drunk and so were acting far outside their normal behavior.

The woman indisputably was unconscious during much of the incident, and she does not remember any of it.

Batey testified that he suffered a blackout and so does not remember any of the incident. That claim of his is very plausible. His pissing on the woman, who had many friends on the football team, indicates that he was extremely drunk.

Vandenburg did not suffer a total blackout, apparently did suffer fragmentary blackouts. His blatantly irrational behavior — breaking the door, sending video recordings to old friends in California, encouraging a gang-bang in front of several witnesses — indicates that he too was extremely drunk.

If the woman was a football-team groupie who was sexually promiscuous with team members, then that consideration is important in understanding why these three characters acted as they did in this situation. There might have been moments when the woman did express drunkenly some consent.

Only a few students at Vanderbilt University are football stars or are football-team groupies.

Even when extremely drunk, practically no male students would have the physical strength and also sexual confidence to treat a coed so degradingly in the presence of several bystanders.

The crime really did happen, but it was a crime that was bizarre.

    What about all-girls colleges?

    Lesbian ghettos.

These days, fathers expect their daughters to have sex by the age of 15.

The current cohort of kids are having less sex than the two prior generations, and at a later age. The birth cohort when American girls lost their virginity the earliest were those born 1974-79. High school girls now are losing their virginity at about the same age as those born in the early 60's and only a shade younger than those born in the 50's.

  24. anon • Disclaimer says:

    1) When it’s connected to race the official media narrative is never true.

    2) If the media are strongly pointing in a particular line then the truth lies somewhere in the exact opposite direction.

So in situations like this simply reverse the media spin and that will point in the general direction of the truth.

Assuming for a second that campus rapes are increasing then following the above process points at either

    1) sport scholarships (for fairly obvious testosterone related reasons) but is there a reason for it to be increasing? enhancement drugs maybe?

    or

    2) these rapes are coming from off-campus and the media are trying to cover it up as they always do.

A simple test of the latter would be to correlate number of attacks with campus location. Do campuses built out in the sticks have a lower incidence than campuses that were built in cheap urban areas that have since become much more violent.

A less simple test of the former (if it hasn’t already been done) would be a correlation between sporting performance enhancing drugs and sexual violence.

  25. now it’s time for the fathers of college women to get together and foment a “rape culture” paranoia/hoax as constant steady moral preaching to college men not to touch college women

Internet comments are frequently full of crap. (No more so than the comments of professional writers at the prestige media, but that’s a low bar)

The “rape culture” garbage is not originating from the fathers of “daddies girls” worried that their daughters are having sex. It comes from the feminist movement (largely though not exclusively composed of women) and the left-wing apparat which regards instilling fear and hatred of “the patriarchy” into young women as a stepping stone to its own power and control.

  26. This post exemplifies why it is a mistake to focus on the underlying ideology. To one degree or another it is post-hoc. In other words, at any moment enduring impulses, and interests that drive them, find the path of least resistance.

While fathers of daughters of course have distinguishable parental interests and hopes, it is all the parent/child combinations, along with other factors such as straight/not straight, that are in competition. In any war there are always strange, and seemingly inexplicable bedfellows.

Needless to say, the balance of interests varies. They lost the battle of UVA because they quite literally chose the worst possible school. Washington D.C. is riding high at the moment. UVA alumni, parents of alumni, students, and prospective students, are well-represented throughout the establishment. They didn’t take kindly to having their brand attacked and degraded. This is not a crowd that will ever take one for the team.

Moreover, in the Washington Post, they ended up with the worst possible local newspaper. Its billionaire owner was willing to pony up the investigative resources, and extract the gains (in reputation, and loyalty for defending these interests).

Another of your commenters insightfully mentioned In Loco Parentis. The idea being that colleges are returning to this role. Of course the enabling dogma had to be updated, and has been. Just as the Middle Class reigned during the immediate post-WWII period, and has now been displaced, young adults enjoyed a brief moment of maximum autonomy during the sixties and seventies. They began losing ground in the 80s, signaled by the re-raising of the drinking age. As the recent headlines attest, they are well on their way to quasi-adult status. A middling condition, which at least currently has a fairly wide range — more than juvenile but a whole lot less than full adult.

  27. Honestly, I don’t get the feeling this is being driven by fathers. Fathers lost control of their daughter’s sexuality in our culture a long time ago and they are only getting weaker. There is zero evidence that the current hysteria is being driven by men, not even in the evil white man behind the curtain pulling the levers sense.

It’s more plausible to say that this is being driven by lesbian women who are trying to reduce the competition for available women. A few months ago the NYT had an article about shemales at Wellesley and the article mentioned (hilariously – I love it when PC gets tangled in its own knots) that the lesbians on campus were not happy about the competition for girlfriends that the shemales posed. In the land of the blind, one eyed shemales are king.

  28. Countenance’s theory sounds nice, but the problem with it is that it isn’t true. Fathers of college women are not getting together and fomenting a “rape culture” paranoia/hoax.

I’ve seen this data, but I remain unconvinced for the following reasons:

    1. The data is self-reported, obviously skewed.
    2. The data does not match with the social media and other “confessions” of young women endlessly writing/talking about themselves and their experiences.

Personal anecdote, at the local Rite Aide two years ago a Latino girl age 15 maybe is at the counter with her Mom brag/boasting/inquiring about “the morning after pill” with a big grin on her face.

I just fail to see in today’s Kardashian world how society suddenly changes young White women with ample opportunity and unsupervised time to stop having sex. Maybe mind rays from fathers at work do it, I dunno. I certainly don’t see in the media a lot of messages aimed at young women that having sex at a young age marks them with the spot of loser. Quite the opposite — CW, MTV, all push the opposite message.

Beautiful women don’t engage in these things — they have no status anxiety as men have been ogling them since puberty. Beautiful women don’t get angry at nerds asking them for coffee in an elevator — they are so intimidating that they never get asked and don’t have status anxiety anyway.

  30. TB2 [AKA "Johnb"] says:

Nonsense. It has nothing to do with daddies back home, except to the degree that they keep funding this monster. This is simply another case of the right internalizing their victimization in order to avoid confrontation with the system. Because the truth is that the system is fundamentally totalitarian, you have no voice in it and will not be allowed one so any such confrontation is going to have to be unpleasant. Easier to stay home and watch one of your five big screens than admit you’re a serf. It’s akin to the “You’re not having enough children so we were forced to commit racist colonialism against you” theme.

  31. I have long been of the opinion that fathers are the problem in the acculturation of their daughters. They treat their daughters as little princesses, put them up on pedestals, and tell them that this is how they should expect to be treated by boys. And of course no man can go through life satisfying those expectations, one-way as they are. With college campuses filled with all these daddy’s girls, insistent that the world be as daddy said it should be, the consequences are obvious.

    There will be tears…

  32. Part of it too is middle aged man who was once in college and a in a frat all of sudden looking his daughter getting to be about 18 and about to graduate from high school and go off to college. He remembers the way he was in college and in the frat house.

I also now tend to think that SJW has a lot to do with helicopter parenting. Here is a great AR comment recently from someone with the screen name “The Night Porter.”

There are two different phenomenon here, in my opinion, that have intersected. Yes, hardcore communists are rampant in academia, and “liberals” do not care about free speech because there is nothing liberal about them. However, the hypersensitivity of the students has more to do with their upbringing by helicopter parents and the implicit feminism in all education today than with a principled leftist position. All Millennials, whether left or right, share a certain social awkwardness bordering on autism. They have not been socialized. Over-protective parents, soccer moms, the whole playing in the park unsupervised is child abuse mindset has stunted both sexes. Millennials are like children who have never experienced the world and, when confronted with divergent views outside the family echo chamber, freak-out. They are precious little snowflakes. The ones who take their parents to job interviews are not “leftists;” they are just Millennials. There is something very wrong with them as a group. I say this as a Gen Xer who still deals with them as peers – of sorts. This is a socialization issue. Over-protective parents raise hypersensitive children, it’s that simple.

  33. Yesterday, a grand jury refused to indict the five African-American students at William Paterson University who were accused of sexual assault.

I live near Paterson, so the grand jury’s decision was the top story in our local newspaper. The article mostly criticized the university’s administration for its high-handed treatment of the innocent male students.

    http://www.northjersey.com/news/all-charges-dismissed-against-5-william-paterson-students-in-sex-assault-case-1.1261204

…. defense attorneys criticized the school’s internal investigation and statements made by its president. …

Ron Ricci, an attorney for one of the students, Jahmel Latimer of Hoboken, said the grand jury made its decision after a one-day presentation. He said defense attorneys had presented evidence to prosecutors that cleared their clients and that the prosecution had then “presented the case honestly” to grand jurors.

Ricci declined to discuss details of that evidence but said: “The facts demonstrated that this was not a sexual assault, and the actions of those young men were not in violation of the law. It clearly wasn’t a crime.” …..

Defense attorneys criticized the William Paterson University police investigation, saying it wasn’t thorough enough and did not include interviews with key witnesses. Ricci also was critical of what he said were “damaging statements” made by administrators that he said made it seem the defendants were guilty.

University President Kathleen Waldron said shortly after the incident that she was “angry and dismayed that this crime was committed on our campus and allegedly by students.” She went on to refer to the incident as a “criminal act”.

“It was outrageous that these young men had to go through the publicity they had to go through,” Ricci said. …..

It was not clear on Thursday whether the five men will be allowed to return to William Paterson. Waldron issued a statement saying that school officials “respect the decision reached through this legal process” but adding that the university “has its own student conduct process that is independent of the state’s legal proceedings.” That process, she said, “will continue.” School officials declined to clarify that statement on Thursday or to make any other comment on the matter.

Ricci asserted that his client and the other men had been “expelled” without a hearing. Another defense attorney, Laura Sutnick, who represents Collick, said the men received letters notifying them they were barred from campus and would have a university hearing on the matter. She said she believed the hearing would be held after the grand jury made its determination. ….. Her client, she said, has not decided whether he would return to William Paterson.

“He may be cautious about going back to that school; that school didn’t support them,” she [Attorney Sutnick] said. “The damage that was done to them can never be repaired.”

The five men had support on campus Thursday afternoon, with several students saying they never doubted they were innocent. …. About 50 students had shown up during a hearing in Superior Court to support the defendants.

“I knew they would come out innocent; the truth always comes out,” said Julie Capiris, 18, a freshman from Point Pleasant who was among those at the courthouse.

“Saw it coming,” said Andy Johnson, a first-year student who knew the five men from the Educational Opportunity Fund, a state program that helps lower-income students with tuition and support services. “Justice was definitely served.”

Sutnick said her client was relieved after the decision, adding that he had been unable to find work while he’s been out of school, at least partly because of publicity over the charges against him. She said those charges and the events that followed would affect the defendants “for life.”

She praised the prosecutor who handled the case, Lisa Squitieri, adding that the Prosecutor’s Office conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations. Sutnick alleged that the William Paterson police did not interview key witnesses that had been interviewed by defense attorneys and did not appear to look for evidence that might have cleared the defendants.

“William Paterson never did a proper investigation,” Sutnick said. “I don’t think they looked for exculpatory evidence.” …..

BTW, get this: "I am not a boy. I am a woman, and today I find myself demeaned."

It seems to me that today, on the contrary, young women demean themselves far more than are demeaned by others.

For all their big talk about being “empowered” and “strong” and “independent,” many women are inclined to speak of themselves, and to act, as if they lack all responsibility or agency in their own lives, as if rather their lives are under the control of others, or of unknown, impersonal forces: so they speak like this sorority girl who “finds” herself demeaned, just as other women speak of “finding” themselves under the influence of drugs and alcohol, of “finding” themselves naked in bed with a man they scarcely know, of “finding” themselves feeling as if the sex they willing engaged in, months or years ago, actually was a rape.

In this disinclination, or unwillingness, of theirs to take responsibility for their own emotions and their own actions, such women are akin to the insane, whom, for criminal misdeeds, the law removes from society and locks up in asylums, to protect the normal, sane people.

Young women do lack full agency (so do young men, but that's a different topic). So they should be guided by loving parents and elders who enforce some standards of behavior and discipline.

Maybe these university administrators are tacitly coming to terms with that reality - hence these new regulations.

Of course, they have to enforce such restrictions without endangering the superficial dogma of feminism. I am sure navigating all these pitfalls will be very tricky for the universities. Until they sort it all out, there will continue to be hapless (and somewhat clues) young men who are caught up with the shifting sands of the cultural and regulatory on-campus sexual mores.

    You got it.
  35. Steve, in joining the “rape crisis” debunk uncritically, you’ve failed to take a hard look at what is actually going on at universities today. This is a disservice to your readers, who are used to more insightful analysis. Go back and look over a few of your old “I Am Charlotte Simmons” articles.

There is in fact a lot of non-consensual and semi-consensual sex happening at colleges. Most of it involves women putting themselves in very foolish positions — yet that doesn’t lessen the damage they take from it. Right now, college is a place where women are encouraged to be foolish, and the worst sort of male passions are allowed to develop without inhibition. The culture scars everyone who enters into it, both man and woman.

Another way to say this is that the modern universities are owned by the sexual predators. They are structured to take the most advantage possible of naive women. There’s very little stranger-rape or gang-rape going on. Women mostly consent, but it’s a foul place that has been created.

The media gets it wrong when it tries to articulate what is going wrong. Extremely wrong. But, like the Tea Party polemic of a few years ago, there is a real message of pain and confusion behind the incoherence.

Your commenter is on the right track by mentioning fathers. He still gets it wrong. Women are in general less protected by their fathers than in the past (if their fathers are even present). Fathers used to be more proactive about a class of wrongs that might happen to their more vulnerable daughters. That they no longer worry as much about their daughters does not mean that the dangers go away — in fact, it means the opposite.

  36. Not seeing it.

I think it’s another variant of a sentiment common on the left wing, which is, “We’ve implemented our ideals so where is the Utopia I was promised?” It’s also about left-wing denial that human nature isn’t inherently good and shock over the fact that bad choices can have bad consequences. They want an A for showing up.

  39. When I went to college and started reading the western canon, one of the things that stood out was the past’s different sexual mores. For hundreds of years, if a women was alone with a strange man her virtue (virginity if unmarried or fidelity if married) was destroyed. In recognition of female nature, or male nature, or maybe both – it was assumed if there was opportunity there was consummation.

Even by the time I entered college in the 1970’s this appeared outdated and stodgy. After the pill, why worry about your future wife’s virginity?

But you know, it would be a very good rule for today. If a young woman wants to 100% avoid date- rape, semi-consensual pressured sex, outright rape – following one simple rule will make her safe: never voluntarily get alone with a man. It never stopped courtship in the past.

In India men and women will not sit next to one another. At dinner entire families segregate at table. About 50% of marriages are arranged. Romantic love is a very strange concept, even to westernized uppercaste Indians. There's a book called The Romantics: A Novel, by Pankaj Mishra that goes into all this.

At some point there's going to be either a Christian revival or, more likely, a violent takeover by Islam. That'll sort things out.

As the original comment noted, the tilting of sex ratios on campus has increased competitive pressures on college women seeking romance. Young men being young men, this race will often go to the sluttiest. Most girls being non-sluts, this type of competitive pressure is deemed unfair by the majority. All of the new dating codes and their punishment regimes should be read as the majority legislating to protect itself from being asked to compete along the dimension of sluttiness.

Bzzzzt. Wrong, see that's what we all want. Solve the mystery. We want a simple, straightforward, clear cut answer and a particular group to blame a social phenomenon on. Well society is complicated and annoyingly, maddeningly so (A lot of why people are so screwed up, I guess, just comes from society being so complicated and confusing for our poor primitive ape brains which are not up to the task for understanding it).

Btw, you notice this piece of the puzzle puts the blame back on men? Just something to notice. I think it IS a real piece of the puzzle, part of the elephant, but just part of this sad story.

  48. A couple of comments.

Multiple partner sexual activity is correlated with increased frequency of future divorce. While divorce rates are very low for men and women with just one lifetime sexual partner, they skyrocket for women as soon as they have two partners, being equal at that point to a man who had 20 partners. Hence the double standard. This was blogged about on the Social Patholigist some time back out of the data from several federal studies.

The modal behavior and desired behavior for both men and women is one lifetime sexual partner. The mean behavior for women is just one or two sexual partners. This was just blogged about on Hookingupsmart again out of federal study data. The prevelance of rampant sexual promiscuity is exaggerated mainly by those participating it, who project their own behavior, or the desire for it, onto the rest of their cohort. Sexual promiscuity is mainly driven by a handful of women being shared out among many men (the exact opposite of the whole alpha male cultural claim).

A female friend interviewed at Smith College 20 years ago for a job as the manager of Smith’s Communications Department (read “PR”). One of their goals (as they delicately indicated) was to change Smith’s image as a Lesbian Paradise. At which point my friend (a PR manager at Harvard) dropped out of the running.

    You got it.

  52. The more I think about it, the more I conclude that the genesis of the “rape culture” hysteria is not purely any one thing. I’ve been bouncing from theory to theory, currently I’m stuck on my hobby horse of daddy’s little girls slash helicopter parenting. My earlier speculation was that it was how leftist whites pawn the blame on white men in frats for black men raping white women, and that it was how parents are trying to protect expensive investments in big tuition checks. I’ve also read some of the theories that Chateau Heartiste advanced.

Maybe I should quit bouncing around and conclude that all of these theories play into it. All of the above is the right answer.

When I went to college and started reading the western canon, one of the things that stood out was the past's different sexual mores. For hundreds of years, if a women was alone with a strange man her virtue (virginity if unmarried or fidelity if married) was destroyed. In recognition of female nature, or male nature, or maybe both - it was assumed if there was opportunity there was consummation.

Even by the time I entered college in the 1970's this appeared outdated and stodgy. After the pill, why worry about your future wife's virginity?

But you know, it would be a very good rule for today. If a young woman wants to 100% avoid date- rape, semi-consensual pressured sex, outright rape - following one simple rule will make her safe: never voluntarily get alone with a man. It never stopped courtship in the past.

In India men and women will not sit next to one another. At dinner entire families segregate at table. About 50% of marriages are arranged. Romantic love is a very strange concept, even to westernized uppercaste Indians. There’s a book called The Romantics: A Novel, by Pankaj Mishra that goes into all this.

At some point there’s going to be either a Christian revival or, more likely, a violent takeover by Islam. That’ll sort things out.

  54. Steve,

I don’t think that’s it at all. This was very clearly driven by feminist activists, feminist trial lawyers in particular, and 20-year-old feminists in training.

Obviously dad’s are not pro-rape, but they also don’t want their sons railroaded for rape. Rather than being a driving force, I would think this is exactly the sort of thing that dads defer to moms energies on, because most fathers simply cannot handle the thought that their daughters are being raped with impunity.

I’ve spent some time lately going over what everyone has said about this in the past few years, and what’s surprising is how many liberal men have opposed what this is all about—the way DOE’s guidelines attenuate the defendants due process rights. Which is strange, because these misconduct boards aren’t sending anyone to jail. Running them more like civil court than criminal court does not seem that unreasonable. Now, when was the last time liberal men conspicuously bucked a bread-and-butter opportunity for feminists? Certainly not when feminists were speaking for responsible fathers everywhere.

Of course, this is not really about rape, or even sexual assault, as lots of people have pointed out. And if you read the ladies at Feministing.com they tacitly admit this in the way they talk about college adjudication being preferable to criminal prosecution because the situation calls for a “transformative” justice. I was in Pi Kappa Alpha at William and Mary and we had the “rapey” reputation on campus. But that rumor was entirely manufactured and perpetuated by other fraternities to poach rushes from us; sororities didn’t care about it one bit. And that’s pretty much what happened to the country. People heard a bunch of rumors and called it an epidemic, even though the average co-ed does not act like that is remotely true.

I loath the idea of acting like a feminist for men, but the manosphere is right about this much: perfectly normal women can be dangerous and unconscionable liars. A friend of mine was suspended for a semester just for being accused of rape–there was no evidence and her own friends said she was lying. And it happened to me for an assault and battery charge from a vindictive ex-gf that I was absolutely innocent of but got sent to county for six months for anyways. Women’s lies send men to jail every day.

Why was this phenomenon manufactured now? Probably a combination of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell and The End Of Men.

    Steve,
OT: you had a commenter suggest that trannies may be men who messed with their endocrine systems with the use of PEDs.
It would explain your observation about the counterintuitive fact of ultramasculine men representing a good number of trannies and why it isn't seen in the developing world.

Of course those people are pathetic. Really pathetic.
