When in doubt as to just how remiss your government was, see what Israel has done to protect its nationals from the coronavirus pandemic.

Taking its cues from the American Left, the Israeli left is all for national and individual self-immolation. But nobody who matters in that country has been listening to the Left babble on about “racism” and “Sinophobia.”

Against the advice of its liberal think tanks—and to protect its nationals from the Wuhan virus pandemic—the Jewish State had, early on, closed its doors to “more and more of eastern Asia, starting with China, continuing to Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Thailand, South Korea and Japan.”

China is Israel’s second-largest trading partner.

To follow were tough travel restrictions and a quarantine regimen on territories in Europe, in line with unfolding coronavirus contingencies. Israel has since extended the quarantine to all arrivals. Everyone who comes to Israel from abroad is sequestered for 14 days. Although the number of cases in the country is rising rapidly, there have been no deaths to date.

What is proving more difficult for the Jewish State is adding “New York and the states of Washington and California to its restricted list.” Israeli public health officials recommend it, but Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu is being muscled by Vice President Mike Pence to keep his country open to those COVID-19 hot zones.

Following transmission of the coronavirus from Wuhan to Washington State, I wondered, in a mild tweet, posted with links to the Israeli policy, why Americans didn’t deserve this kind of diligence from their government.

Came the strident reply, also on Twitter: “Because, unlike Israel, the U.S. is not a postage-stamp-sized garrison state. The U.S. needs to tailor its response to the disease to its role as global economic power.”

Stalin apologist Walter Duranty summed up this Jacobin perspective perfectly. “You can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs.” Breaking a few old eggs, in an old-age home, in King County, Washington State, is what it apparently takes to make that great global omelet.

To the extent that it safeguards the well-being of its own people, the defensive measures taken by Israel comport with the role of government. “Whether they are armed with bombs or bacteria, stopping weaponized individuals from harming others—intentionally or unintentionally—falls perfectly within the purview of the night-watchman state of classical-liberal theory.”

Look to other nationalistic countries for the connection between borders closed and the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As reported by CNBC, Russia had sealed its borders with China as hermetically as possible, late in January. Matters are fluid, but at this writing, one source says Russia has only 147 cases of coronavirus and no deaths. Another, WorldMeters.info, pegs the number of Russia’s coronavirus cases at 111, with no deaths as yet. The infected were said to be Russians returning from Italy.

Likewise, Mongolia closed its borders with China in late January. Only six cases have been reported there. Nobody has died. Singapore has reacted patriotically with all its scientific and cerebral might to what was termed there the “Wuhan flu.” It is now over the worst. The great Lee Kuan Yew would be proud. “The response in the U.S. has essentially been the opposite,” laments an envious geneticist writing at the Technology Review.

For open-border offenders to talk-up open borders during a killer pandemic is scandalous—as scandalous as it would have been for Harvey Weinstein to be talking-up rough sex during his sentencing for sexual assault.

The open-border fetish is turning into a symbol of death, not freedom. For the correlation between borderless countries and infection rates seems unmistakable—certainly when one looks at Italy and the EU nexus of nuts to which it belongs. For Brussels, the undisturbed free flow of people across European borders is sacrosanct.

The first U.S. “Proclamation on Suspension of Entry, as Immigrants and Nonimmigrants, of Persons who Pose a Risk of Transmitting 2019 Novel Coronavirus” was signed into law on Jan. 30. It went into effect only on February 2.

Reports from our nation’s airports, however, told of chaotic attempts to reroute passengers to 11 designated U.S. airports, for the purpose of screening that was as “enhanced” as temperature checks and a reliance on the “honest” say-so of the arrivals.

At the time, no restrictions had been placed by the United States on arrivals from other COVID-19 hot zones. Passenger screening from source countries like Italy was slack, to put it mildly.

The government’s March 13 travel ban on Europe was welcome. Via the National Pulse: “[S]ubject to conditions on the ground … travel from Europe to the United States will be suspended for 30 days.” While restrictions initially exempted the United Kingdom, these were belatedly implemented.

The omission was no small one since, while it is true that the UK “is not part of the EU’s open-borders zone,” it has however—and as reports on terra firma suggest—been allowing any and all to enter from Europe practically unchecked.

Put it this way: An officer “briefly pointing a thermometer gun at your forehead or watching as you go by for signs of a cough or difficulty breathing” does little to stop the virus from spreading. In fact, as a correspondent for Science magazine avers, “It’s exceedingly rare for screeners to detect infected passengers.”

U.S. travel restrictions came too late for the poor residents of the Life Care home in King County, Washington State.

Patient Zero , who very likely infected Washington State and beyond, arrived in my state, from Wuhan, China, on Jan. 15.

Thanks to the patient’s own diligence, he was tested on Jan. 20 and diagnosed with COVID-19. However, CDC contact tracing fell woefully short. As is done in South Korea and Israel, the man’s whereabouts—not his identity—ought to have been made public. In this way, anyone who had come in contact with the Man from Wuhan could have been quarantined and taken the necessary precautions to prevent further transmission.

ORDER IT NOW

Genetic sequencing of virus extracted from infected patients allows scientists to pinpoint the virus’ origins and the timing of the “seeding event.” That the virus that continues to kill elderly people in homes for the aged and the infirm, in King County, came from Wuhan is indisputable.

Writes Trevor Bedford, a sequencing scientist at the Fred Hutch Research Center: “The first case in the USA was … from a traveler directly returning from Wuhan to Snohomish County on Jan. 15.” But there was another traveler whose virus was related to that of Patient Zero, and who had,

“exposed someone else to the virus in the period between Jan. 15 and Jan. 19, before they were isolated. If this second case was mild or asymptomatic, contact tracing efforts by public health would have had difficulty detecting it. After this point, community spread occurred and was undetected due to the CDC’s narrow case definition that required direct travel to China or direct contact with a known case to even be considered for testing. This lack of testing was a critical error and allowed an outbreak in Snohomish County and the surroundings to grow to a sizable problem before it was even detected.” [Emphasis added.]

Colleagues confirm that the “genetic diversity of the Washington State outbreak … suggests a scenario in which an individual infected [from] Washington State travelled to California, and, in particular, to the Grand Princess cruiser, instigating a chain of transmission there. The viral strain from a patient infected on the cruise ship off the coast of California is similar to the cluster circulating in Washington state.”

If only travel from China had been stopped earlier, the poor old people from the Life Care home might be alive, and the coronavirus would not be multiplying exponentially among us.

As for the country’s professional racism spotters, they wish only to uncouple coronavirus from Wuhan, a city in the Hubei Province of China, where it originated.

Naturally, the ossified CDC has been scathing about the intellectually nimble sleuth work done by scientists not its own, in the course of the viral RNA sequencing mentioned. But epidemiology obligates this creaky bureaucracy to trace the origins of the virus.

And so it has. Writes the CDC:

“Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in people and many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people such as with … with this new virus (named SARS-CoV-2).

The SARS-CoV-2 virus [has its] origins in bats. The sequences from U.S. patients are similar to the one that China initially posted, suggesting a likely single, recent emergence of this virus from an animal reservoir.

Early on, many of the patients at the epicenter of the outbreak in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, had some link to a large seafood and live animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. Later, a growing number of patients reportedly did not have exposure to animal markets, indicating person-to-person spread. Person-to-person spread was subsequently reported outside Hubei and in countries outside China, including in the United States.”

In other words, coronavirus jumped first from animal to person and thereafter from person-to-person.

The deadly disease originated in one of China’s disease-breeding, barbaric, “wet markets,” as they are called. These “wet markets” are hell on earth for wild animals, which are tied up, stacked in cages and slaughtered on the spot, because the fiendish customers demand “freshness.”

As the Associated Press reports, “You’ve got live animals, so there’s feces everywhere. There’s blood because of people chopping them up, … The messy mix raises the … odds that a new virus will jump to people handling the animals and start to spread.”

To its report, the AP has appended an image of a “wet market,” adjacent to an up-market Chinese mall.

Suffer the innocent, helpless critters. Suffer the old and the infirm. God help us all.

MARGINALIA

On March 14, a longtime Unz Review reader, “Quebecer,” requested here that “the only female commenter on this website, … [who] has guts to raise her voice in this rough neighborhood,” be given a “break.”

That “female” (moi) replies:

Dear Quebecer: Please! Rough neighborhood? The tiny cohort of cowards that dog the Mercer Column (on this site only) is nothing but an echo chamber of “Little Men,” whose combined intelligence is even more diminished than their flaccid manhood.

These “Little Men” hide behind their email handle, nipping at my heels in fractured, mangled sentences, using nothing but ad hominen and Jewy conspiracy. What would make you imagine this kind of thread is a threat to me?

If you think the “Little Men”—the minnows, the reptilian brains who spew ugly invective on this thread, all to prop-up their inadequacies—are a match for me, you don’t know who’s The Man around here.

You seem a polite, mild-mannered person (certainly a gentleman or woman worthy of respect—and a response). But you, too, are living in a tiny echo chamber if you imagine any writer worth her salt even notices a pack of rabid, mangy, fulminating zombies, who hound their intellectual betters because they are so threatened.

Don’t you see? These concerted, mindless, anti-intellectual, reflexive attacks on this thread alone can be likened to the defensive actions of a single-celled organism, an ameba, trying to expel something that irritates it. An amoeba can’t reason, it reacts primitively.

To repeat: You have here on the thread that dogs me a collective; something akin to a big amorphous amoeba. The entities here, aside from you, are all the same. Nothing between their ears, but the drive for survival: The bitches on this thread act like a simple, single-celled organism who will, instinctively, act in unison in order to preserve its base integrity.

Mercer loves real men, but she threatens unmanly Small Men. They want me gone. I love it. Bring it, bitches!

In any event, Quebecer: I suggest that you, a decent, manly individual, separate yourself from this pack of dogs (with apologies to dogs for the unflattering figure-of-speech). Remember: By virtue of their cruelty, cowardice and intellectual impotence—the hounds on this thread are no match for me, you, or any decent person.

ORDER IT NOW

Being an Old Testament traditionalist, I instinctively despise weak bullies who, relying on anonymity, cower behind their cyber parapets, to gang up on one woman, because she’s stronger than they are in every sense. So, time permitting, I might one day embarrass a few publicly.

Real men are strong. They like a joust. And they delight in a few good women, even if they disagree with them. And strong men have a sense of humor. Two come to mind in my 20 years of writing the “Paleolibertarian Column.”

Writing for the Times Literary Supplement, a liberal gentleman named Anthony St. John wrote, “I would run for my life if I saw Ilana Mercer coming my way! Does she eat nails for breakfast?”

And billionaire investor Victor Niederhoffer—such a fun, eccentric man—said this: “You can’t win an argument with this woman. I’ve tried and failed.”

One day, time allowing—after all, there is so much life to live—I might just take some extremely unkind cuts to each “Little Man” who hounds me on this thread, never making sense, and so often emitting scary threats.

Little Men have a big decision. Is it worth hounding Mercer? Can the “Little Man” collective afford it? Do these “Little Men” want to lose face, when they are already lacking in the proverbial male bits? I don’t think so.

  2. The fact that the patient who arrived from Wuhan, China, on Jan. 15 and asked to be tested for Covid-19 does not make him Patient Zero.

He was just the first man who arrived in Seattle from Wuhan and asked to be tested.

Though it had received the WHO Red Notice on January 1, the CDC forbade Seattle health authorities to test ‘flu swabs from their ongoing ‘flu monitoring program for Covid-19 until March.

We’re a long way from identifying Patient Zero

Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Southeast Asians are looking at America in disbelief, not because we haven’t seen these kinds of displays before, but that white westerners do this again and again. Most of it has nothing to do with “freshness”.

Where do you think meat comes from? Have you ever been on a farm? It comes from animals, that have to be slaughtered. Meat doesn’t just magically appear prepackaged in plastic in the grocery store.

Without extensive industrial agriculture and refrigeration, you have to slaughter animals “on the spot” and keep them alive until you do so. Meat starts to spoil immediately unless you salt and cure it and turn it into jerky. And in industrial agriculture, animals are crammed and stacked in cages too. You just don’t see it when you buy meat in a modern grocery store.

Mercer is trying to say that the only reason America got infected was due to woke racism cries.

    This is total BS.

America did not put travel bans on anyone until it was far too late because Trump did not take the pandemic seriously. This is documented. He was saying this was going to be no worse than the flu.

At the point in time when America was just starting to think about the outbreak, Italy was already badly infected. If Mercers thesis is correct that it was liberal wokeness that stopped the president from banning travel from China, why didn’t Trump ban travel from Italy? Presumably there would not have been an outcry of racism for banning travel from a white nation.

    This is just revisionist history.

This could be one of the most harmful events in American history and it is because if Trumps incompetence that we have to suffer.

  10. Tor597 says:

    Unreal.

Everyone knows about the Bill Gates Agenda 201 simulation that was ran in October just before the Coronavirus outbreak.

But there was another simulation, this time by the Federal Government, called Crimson Contagion that dealt with a respiratory viral pandemic out of China.

This simulation was released in October 2019 with a Do Not Distribute order. This simulation predicted over 500,000 dead.

So now you have 2 different groups running drills on pandemics right before an actual pandemic actually happens? What are the odds of that?

The Crimson Contagion simulation had the pandemic coming out of China. And the Gates simulation specifically used Corona Virus. At this point who didn’t know there was a pandemic about to happen?

  11. unit472 says:

Re: Israel and its China virus problem. The outbreak in Israel seems to have gotten large enough to have the government order its citizenry to self quarantine. Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah should therefore begin large scale rocket attacks on Israel to force the citizenry into shelters where they can infect each other. This would greatly enhance the power of their rockets as the goal has always been to inflict civilian casualties on Israel. Israel also has divided leadership now and would rather not have to mobilize its army to conduct a foray into Gaza much less Lebanon to stop the bombardment given the circumstances.

China/Iran didn’t weaponized no flu, they weaponized the idea of flu by putting on a great show which the western media lapped up. Corona virus is common flu and can be found and tested for during any flu season.
All China had to do was lock down some cities and travel, build some hospitals and report regular flu deaths with an added level of hysteria. Get Iran to do a little of the same, maybe send some politicians and clerics to an early retirement and bingo. Western media, left and right feeds into the panic by unquestionably reporting on you tube videos as if they were going 100% real without comparing stats with other flu seasons. This eventually causes wide spread social and economic chaos in the west, exactly what China wanted. Don’t forget Russia conveniently twisting the screws on OPEC.

  13. Mike-SMO says:

If y’all are done smoozing, I’d like to put in a word in support of President Trump. It was clear that he was getting politically correct garbage from Federal agencies polluted by two terms of Obama Corruptocracy. Those hired or promoted during the Obama Administration couldn’t even come up with a name for the virus. The President recruited a team of experts in a topic that, I am sure, he didn’t have a clue about, in order to try to do something relevant. The Democratic Media pounced on that effort by old White men who indulged in turf battles.

Every meeting, seminar, staff meeting worth anything was an emotional knife fight where the players advanced and defended their opinion. President Trump got to listen and learn, as a good leader should. “Flattening the Curve” is a tricky and dangerous play. A courageous play.

I agree that the US should have restricted travel sooner, but The President recognized that the Corruptocrats were struggling to NOT make a decision and he jumped in because something had to be done. He called his own team for this game. There weren’t even any options to pick since virtually nothing was known about this plague. The “Deep State” Gutter Gang couldn’t even package the few primitive test kits that we had without screwing up.

I am sure that the actions that The President orders will be “sub-optimal”. We don’t even know what the limits of the problem are but The President grabbed hold of the sh*t show, made some decisions, and kept the US from becoming a nation of bulldozer burial parties. Iran and Italy showed that way.

The President will have to bully/coerce/extort/bribe to make this work. Lives hinge on a functioning economy and society as well as on some magic potion; the bodies start stacking up as soon as the healthcare system fails. Hold your noses, chilluns, and take a big swallow. President Trump has got the table. Got any useful ideas?

What is this bad article repeating US cover story that the virus jumped from animals to humans due to wet market. For anyone thinking the same, ask yourself, how the virus came from wet market in China then teleported to Qom in Iran? Interestingly during US-China trade war just before Chinese New Year, after HK protest died down, after event 201. In Iran, a moment after Iranian general was killed by US, most likely as diversion. Yeah, not suspicious at all.

Even in Italy it was released after China so that Italians would blame China for infecting them, increasing sinophobia, Italy was the 1st EU country to join China’s Belt Road. Next time Italy wants to co-operate with China, there’ll he resistance from some Italians due to this.

It is worth considering that what is taking place has little or nothing to do with the epdemiology of the COVID-19 virus. Read the data from Italy, from the cruise ships, from Korea and consider it neutrally – we see a virus that is mild to moderate in its danger to the vast majority of healthy humans.
Any geopolitical argument made on the basis of Wuhan Flu being deadly enough to warrant closed borders or lockdowns needs to step back and ask if this basis is true:

Keep this in mind: Any American state governor can shut a state’s borders simply by declaring an emergency exists. Emergencies can be economic, criminal, viral, whatever.

None have. Ohio is supposed to be petrified and taking “major precautions” but not one highway leading in has been shut, not one airport seized by State Police and guardsmen, not one rail line so much as ordered to slow trains down for inspection. You know, the stuff people in real emergencies do.

So… keep in mind it’s an addition to the ordinary flu season and all the deaths so far in the US and Europe, barring Italy, can be seen as an unusually nasty influenza outbreak.

    Sad, maybe, but no disaster.

If you live in Canada or the USA, check the outbreaks/deaths within your own State/Province and you’ll see it clearly. These are typical winter deaths, garnished with a foreign virus that could have been kept out if both countries did their own manufacturing, as they both did before the Reagan/Mulroney years.

“To the extent that it safeguards the well-being of its own people, the defensive measures taken by Israel comport with the role of government”

Total B.S. – however, if the idiot slave citizens of Israel are stupid enough to believe that the government should [let alone actually can!] protect their health, then “go ahead, make my day”, for “stupid is as stupid does” , after all.

“Whether they are armed with bombs or bacteria, stopping weaponized individuals from harming others—intentionally or unintentionally—falls perfectly within the purview of the night-watchman state of classical-liberal theory.”

More B.S. Now you’re saying [via sleight of hand, no less],that because Israel does it [albeit imperfectly] , that the US needs to do the exact same crap.

    This just in :

1] The sole, original, alleged role of the US government was/is to protect the individuals freedom, as laid out in the Declaration of Independence, [and later the Bill of Rights]. The individual was supposed to be left to his/her own devices with regards to personal health, [and in practically all other areas of their lives too]. The US was not originally supposed to be about managing the health and wellbeing of the individual via government mandate, although that is obviously what its now become [much to the individuals detriment]. And apparently, what it has now become is fine with you, as you consider that protecting people from vague, undefined , unproven threats to their health is somehow a legitimate part of a “night-watchman state of classical-liberal theory” of government.

    “Night-watchman-classical-liberal”Yeah, right ! 🤣

    2] Government “Solutions”Never Work

Even if the health/wellbeing of the individual _was_ within the legitimate purview of the US government [which it ain’t], the plain as day fact of the matter is that mandated government solutions for _anything_ , never work, they almost invariably make the situation far worse than it already was; meaning that the current Israel [and elsewhere] “solution” will ultimately fail, and the same “medicine” that you believe needs to be now “prescribed” via the state in the US will also make the situation far worse than it already is here in the US.

    More, “just in”:

“Government  is a disease masquerading as its own cure”  Robert LeFevere

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.” H.L. Mencken

“Because they are all ultimately funded via both direct and indirect theft [taxes], and counterfeiting [central bank monopolies], all governments are essentially, at their very cores, 100% corrupt  criminal scams which cannot be “reformed”or “improved”,simply because of their innate criminal nature.”   onebornfree

No other document would have such a profound effect on American medicine, starting it on its path to destruction up to and beyond the recently passed (and laughably titled) Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA), a.k.a., “Obamacare.” Flexner can only be accurately understood in the context of what led up to it.

    https://asiatimes.com/2020/03/mother-nature-and-globalization-to-blame-for-covid-19-crisis/

If this pandemic originated as a nefarious conspiracy theory then it sure looks like at this point its intent was to discredit the knee-jerk conspiracy theory industry. There’s definitely an upper IQ limit of susceptibility to continuing to buy what someone has been always selling. This has long struck me as the consultant’s business model — plus-n-play solutions that just so happen to be right . . . again.

Unsurprisingly, every country has responded in character, if you will. CCP China, first secretive and then draconian. Since it was the site of origin, and succeeded in limiting spread, political pressure in other polities less inclined to such measures to adopt something similar became overwhelming.

That was actually propitious in that otherwise medical systems would have broken earlier and more widely, with much darker consequences.

Glass is half full, here’s the good news in the US:

While it’s difficult to notice, what with all the shouting by pants pissers and those with tattered index cards to put to use again, in a matter of weeks the Amercian population has made enormous maturation strides in terms of trade-offs. Containment and mitigation have been sufficient to at least slow the spread, and the economic disruptions consequential enough, to have conditioned people to accept the inevitable imperfect outcome.

By the way, I seem to be the only one who didn’t memory-hole the Democrat debate last Sunday. Believe me, it guaranteed that Trump will win in an even bigger landslide than I was already predicting if either Biden or Sanders is the Democrat nominee. Whatever the faults of this great republic, electing someone in rapid cognitive decline ain’t going to happen. The alternative, Bernie, would be emphatically worse given his declaration that this was the moment to reinvent America as a socialist country, beginning with medical care.

I don’t remember reading anything about Trump. I took it more on a commentary on the overton window of what is acceptable in america to do. We are not permitted the ethnocentrism that Israelis enjoy and because of this, it wouldn’t matter who was president, a travel ban would never be implemented until it was too late. In pre 1945 we might have done this in time, but can you imagine, if we entered into another war with say, Japan, that we would ever take “racist” steps like we did then such as interning japanese nationals? Not even close, and so too would we never have banned the chinese until after it was too late.

  36. I do like everybody on this site so here is my little suggestion!
In your body your lungs are protected by mucus. Mucus is lining all passage ways in lungs catching most of impurities including viruses from air. Your body creates mucus from digesting animal fat.
In persons around 40 years old this function drastically diminishes. After 40 years the body is capable to create mucus only from butter.
So if you want to have a certain protection from Corona virus it will be god idea to consume a teaspoon of butter every morning.
My suggestion to you is to have a typical German break fest:
Have two slices of toast smear on them butter and on top of butter smear a jam and have it with coffee.
It is not a foolproof remedy against Corona virus, but I do guarantee to you that it will help you to fight the virus and it will make you a little bit more resistant not to get it.

As far as completely shutting states (or nations) down is concerned… My bet is that western .govs will have little other choice, given the number of people — people like yourself (62% in the US according to one poll) — who either fail to understand and appreciate this situation and simple math involved, or simply dismiss anything and everything other than whatever -ology or -ism or party or conspiracy with which you’re obsessed dictates.

By the time you finally get it, you may find yourself under martial law — which might otherwise have been avoided had you the critical facilities necessary to separate wheat from chaff in this constant flow of data, information and bullshit we call the internet.

Whom do you think governors, prime ministers and presidents answer to? We know from long, hard and bitter experience it’s not we, the little people — bankers, billionaires and CEOs on the other hand…

Why is it taking so long for .gov to respond? Bankers, billionaires and CEOs don’t want anything to upset their rice bowls. Trump encapsulated that mentality perfectly in his early comments, tweets and responses. But you can only deny reality so long as you’re insulated from it and coronavirus, no matter its origin, is exponentially stripping illusions from the bones of reality. Kudos to Trump for recognizing that, however belatedly, and acting upon it.

For everyone who sees a conspiracy behind every bush and under every rock… Grow up. Shit happens, including conspiracies, but not everything that happens is a conspiracy. Judging from the public reactions of .govs since mid-to-late January, coronavirus caught them flatfooted.

But note, that’s not to say politicians and their owners won’t use this to attempt advancing their political / social / economic / financial agendas — would be a shame to let a perfectly good crisis go to waste — but that is very different from arguing coronavirus is either a hoax or deliberate release of a mild bug intended to accomplish whatever elite conspiracy of the moment happens to be popular…

Good luck. Keep your eyes open and choose your battles wisely. See you on the other side.

First, non Americans like this Godfree Chinese PR person need to know the CDC is not any kind of national health medical hospital system. It doeent order local hospitals to do or not do something except in case of emergency and epidemics. That would be after CDC analyzed the data it continually collects and conclude there’s an epidemic or emergency

It is a federal agency. It’s primary purpose is to collect data from every town, city county and state and analyze it. In the earliest stages, such as the middle of January the data wouldn’t have been analyzed enough for CDC to order local hospitals to test or not to test for coronavirus.

America has the federal CDC and state public health agencies. The main work of collecting data and taking emergency measures actually dealing with epidemics is done at the county level by the local hospitals and clinics

In Sean Carroll’s podcast with Tara Smith she says Coronavirus -19 is of middling mutation rate, so it alters but not that fast. The Italian outbreak is matched by genetic sequencing of the virus to the Bavarian cases in Germany in January, if you believe the Italians. However the data is “is not sufficient to claim a link between Munich and Italy,” according to the German virologist Christian Drosten who actually created the Coronavirus test. So it is quite likely both the German and the Italian outbreak were similar because they both derived from the same source in China. and both independently arrived in Europe directly from China. I suspect the cruise ship and Washington outbreaks might not be connected., except through both having come from the same source in China.

My great-grandmother used to have my grandmother take her there for her poultry needs — they had live chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys (at Thanksgiving) and rabbits — and you’d just pick out the one you wanted and they’d slaughter and butcher it for you — or you could take it home to slaughter and butcher on your own (that’s what my great-grandmother did — feeding it herself until the time of need and then handling it all by herself — in her mid-70s no less).

One quote I saw the past day or 2 — from an ethnic Chinese writer — is that ‘Chinese will eat anything that flies except an airplane, and anything with 4 legs except a table’. From my former wife’s experience in China in the ’80s on a diplomatic mission, that was quite true …

Well first of all, things were much more violent and sudden in Rhodesia and second, about half their white population has indeed fled, but leaving behind everything you’ve built your whole life is not an appetizing proposition for most people, so it’s not something that happens instantaneously in all but the most extreme circumstances. Those that have remained are holed up in fortified suburbs guarded by private security companies.

The case of SA was not like the case for Rhodesia, outside influence kept the thing from turning into a total shitshow and the whites that remained were allowed to keep their wealth and live mostly separate from the Africans. They are on a slow road to disaster of course, Affirmative action will slowly remove their progeny from wealth and slowly undermine stability as time goes on. There is not a single country or city with an African overclass that could be described as high functioning. But the people who orchestrated the dispossession of the Boers were smart, they boiled the frog slowly and split the whites by favoring the brits, very similar to the strategy being implemented in the USA. You don’t do it all at once or the frog gets scared and jumps out.

What I’m arguing is a black swan event like the WuFlu and the concurrent potential second great depression is NOT something these people have planned for. Therefore it opens up myriad potentialities for unexpected events to occur.

Lastly, it’s only been 3 decades, a blink of the eye when taking a historical view of human events. Yugoslavia functioned for over 70 years before it’s violent collapse, for example. You could also look to Roman history, extreme decadence and societal dysfunction and incoherence does not portend imminent collapse it merely assures that it will occur eventually. There is absolutely no possibility that SA will exist 100 years from now, bet on that.

    Huge news!

This article talks about how vaping is very bad for you if you get infected with the Corona virus. Smoking is bad too, but vaping is much worse.

This fills in the blanks on a lot of things we know so far. Why were the Chinese hit so hard? It turns out that smoking really may have played a big part after all.

We also know that there were a lot of mysterious deaths from vaping this year. That coincides with Corona Virus being in America as far back as last summer. This didn’t make sense to me because I assumed it wouldn’t affect young people. But now that we know how much a risk factor vaping is, it makes much more sense.

Also, I know for sure that this was a really bad flu season even before the Corona Outbreak became known. Now I think it is likely that a lot of these deaths were related to the Corona Virus but they were just called flu.

It also explains why Trump did not want to test early. It’s because he knew the numbers here would be much greater than in China as far back as January. So he had to purposely delay testing to avoid suspicion.

    https://mol.im/a/8136069

Markers of immune function and suppression are actually bigger in vapers than in smokers’ he said.

‘In terms of immunosuppressant and inflammatory effects, e-cigarettes might be doing more bad things than cigarettes – but both are really bad.

  83. I’ve got not much disagreement with the main column here. Globalization, with likely fifty to a hundred thousand Chinese people coming and going, America to China, around that Spring Festival (Chinese New Years) time, is no doubt a big cause of the quick spread of this virus to America. It wouldn’t have happened the same way even 10 years ago. I also agree that Political Correctness kills quite often, if only indirectly.

However, as to that “MARGINALIA”, as the very 1st commenter said, RELAX. You know you want lots of comments. If some of them didn’t piss you off, then you would have written neither the comment back in that last thread nor this bit here. If you want to blow them off, then just don’t write anything back.

The fact is, you may often learn from the commenters, as much as it hurts to. The ones that have gotten on you about your S. African background have got a point, you must admit. Were you truly politically active against apartheid, as I ‘ve read? Was it just your family? Were you too young to know better about how much you were helping to bring your country to shithole status in 2 decades?

Why don’t you just explain some of this to put your detractors at ease a bit? If it is the case that, “well, a woman’s got a right to change her mind” or “we all grow up and live and learn”, OK then, explain that. Even so, how do we know you will keep the Libertarian views you have now. Just last week, whether due to senility combined with an overdose of TV infotainment, whether, it’s the pundit version of The Cocktail Party Theory of Political Stupidity or whatever, Paul Craig Roberts has just turned Socialist. Peak Stupidity says, not in so many words .. Fuck that guy!

Ha, earlier today when I read this column, with no time for a real reply, I had you, Mr. Reed in mind. Do you feel in good company with the pundit class, looking down on these deranged commenters that pester you so? Have you not noticed that lots of them are quite a bit smarter than you are, or are you just skimming for the cusswords?

It’s not that it’s fun, but I’m sure you all get lots of more page views, which Mr. Unz likes, when you have long, argumentative comment threads. (It’s not linear either – often the last 50 comments are 5 people arguing, and checking the page every 1/2 hour – “let me see if that asshole wrote back!”) Hey, I’m a part of this, I’ll admit right here.

What I’m gonna do in a few minutes is post my impression (yes, I do impressions too) of Fred Reed and his bit about railing on all problems and all people who get off their asses to try to solve said problems. But, he is a clever gonzo journalisto, so that’s just what he does. Stupidity is right there in the job description.

  86. @Frederick V. Reed

Found it. The question is: are you sadistic enough to read it?

[Fred Reed mode] America is decaying. There is no unified American culture anymore. There are lots of people mixed together from all over the world. There are bad ignorant Americans that are trying to prevent people from coming in from all over the world. Things don’t work well anymore. The new foreigners are better than those ignorant foreigner-hating Americans at working. America has changed for the worse from back when I was a kid when it was 90% white.

Trump is a clown. The TV news that I watch all day is full of people criticizing the President for everything and making fun of him. TV sucks. Americans should see how bad their country is on the TV. Trump wants a wall built. Bad ignorant Americans want a border barrier built. Walls don’t work. Americans just don’t want we Mexicans to assimilate and exchange bodily fluids with them. Mexicans don’t want to assimilate and be part of the crass, new, sick American culture that I watch on TV. Mexican culture is better and we have great engineering schools and gated communities. Mexico is better, so Mexicans don’t want to go to America. There is no need for a wall, but they don’t work anyway. Bodily fluids! [/Fred Reed mode]

This is a complete overreaction to a relatively small threat. Given the shutdowns of various industries, orders to remain at home and mingle as little as possible (etc), one would think that a couple of million people had been sent to the morgue already.

In fact, this massive pandemic is far less of a catastrophe than preventable medical error, which kills 200,000+ people in the USA each year.

If the Chinese had accidentally released a man-made virus inside their Wuhan Lab, they would have known about the new Coronavirus and declared a public health emergency immediately. Now it is the Chinese. Ilana has no medical knowledge and most of the article is gibberish. It was scientists in China who first identified the Covid 19 strain and decoded its DNA. They have freely shared their data with the rest of the world to save lives. As of 21st March 2020, WHO have identified Europe as the epicenter of Covid 19 and Italy, the epicenter within Europe. Last week Chinese medical experts arrived in Italy to advise Italian doctors and they have been feted as heroes throughout Europe since these doctors are putting their lives at risk to save European lives.
Trump has authorized the import of Malaria vaccines from Israel even though medical experts have warned these vaccines are ineffective. The biggest hurdle in this country when tackling the virus is Trump. Regarding Israel, it is a small country permanently on a war footing with just one international airport therefore for Israel rapidly putting in place emergency measures is second nature. I went to Israel as a tourist several years ago and I only had to spend 5 minutes at Ben Gurion airport to realise the country was at war footing. I distinctly recall feeling foolish, having asked a female soldier maning one of the gates if there was a new intifada. ‘This is normal. Welcome to Israel!’ She smiled.

Everyone knows about the Bill Gates Agenda 201 simulation that was ran in October just before the Coronavirus outbreak.

But there was another simulation, this time by the Federal Government, called Crimson Contagion that dealt with a respiratory viral pandemic out of China.

Wow! I knew about the Agenda 21 exercise, but the Crimson Contagion simulation is news to me.

Not one but TWO “simulations” ran just EXACTLY at the moment, October 2019, when the World Military Games were taking place in Wuhan, China. (The World Military Games, where we sent a contingent of 300 personnel, took place on Oct. 19-27, 2019).

That is just far too coincidental for my layman’s mind, and I’ll wager that for many others’, as well.

It seems the circumstantial evidence weighs very heavily in favor of a deliberate, and rather vicious, bio-warfare strike against China.

No disrespect to Ms. Mercer, she looks better than my old fart 58 year old ass for sure, even though the kid was considered a looker in his younger day. Anyhow, I think I have only commented on a couple of Ms. Mercer’s articles. I don’t take her seriously because like a lot of people here, I can see through her bullshit. It has nothing to do with her being Jewish, ( although her Jewish “bullshittery” is obvious, unlike Bobby Fischer, who was at least partially Jewish, Fischer was a truth speaker, while Ms. Mercer is an opportunist IMO.)

I can remember parts of Ms. Mercer’s interview on the Political Cesspool Radio Show from awhile back. One of the host, Keith Alexander, totally EXPOSED Ms. Mercer as nothing more than an OPPORTUNIST promoting a book on the genocide of Whites in South Africa. IF I remember right, Mercer’s father, (forgive me IF I am wrong) led the way against apartheid in South Africa, but my guess is he didn’t have a problem with Israel ( then again, this my opinion, I can’t read people’s minds nor do I have any idea what goes on inside another person’s head or heart especially someone I don’t know from Adam.) Anyhow, IF her father helped lead a movement to bring about racial discord in South Africa that led to what we see today, how could Ms. Mercer write a book about the horrific racial genocide we see today and be taken as someone who is seriously concerned for White South Africans?? I say Ms. Mercer should DONATE ALL PROCEEDS FROM HER BOOK TO WHITE SOUTH AFRICANS IN NEED, IF she were truly a human rights activist.

No, I don’t think Ms. Mercer is to be “trusted.” WHY you ask? Because she NEVER condemns Israel or Israeli treatment of Palestinians for one thing. I seriously doubt that the ADL and $PLC find Ms. Mercer to be a “thorn in their side.” hahaha. Get real, man.

I’ll close by saying I would personally like to thank the Political Cesspool radio show and especially Keith Alexander because I had all but ordered Ms. Mercer’s book before listening to that show, now I don’t even know if I would check it out of my local library or borrow a copy to read.

The first known patient became ill on 1 December 2019 and had no links to the market, according to a paper published by Chinese researchers in The Lancet on 24 January that offered details about the first 41 patients in Wuhan. In that group, 12 others also had no links to the market. Other countries can learn important lessons from Italy, says Dr. Giuseppe Remuzzi, co-author of a recent paper in The Lancet about the country’s dire situation. The takeaways include how to swiftly convert a general hospital into a coronavirus care unit with specially trained doctors and nurses. “We had dermatologists, eye doctors, pathologists, learning how to assist a person with a ventilator,” Remuzzi says. Some question why Italy was caught off guard when the virus outbreak was revealed on Feb. 21. Remuzzi says he is now hearing information about it from general practitioners. “They remember having seen very strange pneumonia, very severe, particularly in old people in December and even November,” he says. “This means that the virus was circulating, at least in [the northern region of] Lombardy and before we were aware of this outbreak occurring in China.” He says it was impossible to combat something you didn’t know existed.

I honestly cant see the link between a huge chinese market for meat & hunting wild animals for sport (hopefully they eat what they kill).
Nor is the link between family farms killing animals for their private consumption & this market.
Its not the animals per se here but the possibility of cruelty & a sense that the whole thing is unregulated & therefore unclean etc.
I guess (i dont know) that the thought that Pangolins are being slaughtered there really biases me against it. (some suggest that pangolins along with bats are part of a chain of mutation that lead to the virus jumping from animals to humans. I find it hard to believe….but what would i know…?)

I agree with the person who said it’s necessary to keep the animals alive. That isn’t what makes them fiendish. What makes them fiendish are the animals they eat : hedgehogs, bats, snakes, cats, dogs, etc.

The 2009 H1N1 pandemic which originated in North America came from birds, pigs and humans. Here’s its Wikipedia entry:

The 2009 flu pandemic or swine flu was an influenza pandemic that lasted from January 2009 to August 2010, and the second of the two pandemics involving H1N1 influenza virus (the first being the 1918–1920 Spanish flu pandemic), albeit a new strain. First described in April 2009, the virus appeared to be a new strain of H1N1, which resulted from a previous triple reassortment of bird, swine, and human flu viruses further combined with a Eurasian pig flu virus, leading to the term “swine flu”. It is estimated that 11–21% of the global population at the time — or around 700 million–1.4 billion people (out of a total of 6.8 billion) — contracted the illness – more than the number of people infected by the Spanish flu pandemic, with about 150,000–575,000 fatalities.

Now would you call birds, pigs and humans fiendish?

Zoonotic diseases pose the greatest risk of animal-to-human transmission based on human proximity to the animals which has nothing to do with public hygiene even though live animals in wet markets would presumably bring about sanitary problems with animal poop, organs, fluids and what not. Raising farm animals could also cause zoonotic diseases even in factory environments such was the case with the H1N1 swine flu epidemic which started in the USA and spread worldwide in 2009-2010.

Hunting wild animals for sport is a national pastime in the USA and many other Western countries. And they do eat their meat (after cooking them of course). My point though is to dispute the premise that live animals in wet markets are somehow the culprit for zoonotic diseases. Just moving all those live animals to factory farms would not prevent viral pandemics including in China where several H1N1 swine and bird flu epidemics wiped out the pig and chicken supply in factory farms in 2018 and 2019.

Animals including pets carry viruses that are transmissible to humans. The only way you can eliminate animal viruses is to forbid any human contact with animals whether in wet markets or animal farms or households.

There are 1000s of people wandering around on family farms in the USA?

    Who knew?

I doubt too that bats would be captured, slaughtered, and consumed for food on very many family farms in the USA, if any. The mostly insectivorous bats we have in the United States are generally pretty small, the largest being the Western mastiff bat, Eumops perotis, which weighs just a couple ounces. Not much there for a bat-burger.

The Fruit bats are much larger, with some species weighing up to about 3 lbs., and these are the bats commonly consumed in Africa and Asia, but we don’t have any Fruit bats in the Western hemisphere.

In the New World we do have the adorable Vampire bats that crawl up to sleeping animals, make a small incision with their razor sharp teeth, and lick the blood from their dozing victims. I’ve never heard of anyone catching and eating Vampire bats, but it sounds like it could be great sport. Hunters would be less likely to mistake people for bats, so it would be a lot safer than deer hunting, where hunters sometimes mistake people for deer, and shoot them dead.

I mean, how do you mistake a blonde, 9-year old little girl for a deer? Obviously, it takes keen eyesight to be a good hunter…

Speaking of hunters, there are a very few carnivorous bats like the Ghost bat that actively hunt birds, other bats, mice, lizards, and anything else they can catch and overpower, in the air and on the ground. We don’t have those in the US either.

Probably because of their lifestyle, bats harbor many viruses.

There are no Pangolins in the New World either, but we do have Armadillos, and some people do eat those despite the fact that the creature is known to harbor leprosy, which can be transmitted to humans who simply touch the crawling beast.

Imagine having a couple hundred Armadillos caged up in Times Square, and being chopped up on the spot for Armadillo tacos and burritos…

I think you’re confused about my last post which was a counter argument to the idea that somehow the practice of selling “live animals” in wet markets are “barbaric” as expressed in this article. Until the advent of industrial agriculture in the latter half of the 20th century, almost every society on this planet bought live animals sold in wet markets to be killed for their meat. That practice went on for thousands of years for almost all agrarian societies with the only exception to this rule being nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes. Nothing “barbaric” about that practice which the author of this article insinuates is responsible for animal-to-human transmission of zoonotic diseases which is caused by human proximity to animals not by the presence of live animals in wet markets. If you raise animals in your farm, you could get viruses from those domesticated animals which doesn’t have to be bats. The H1N1 swine flu pandemic which originated in pig farms in the USA killed several hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.

Lastly, hunting for sport is the favorite pastime in rural America. And the animals do get killed for their meat.

No, I’m not confused about animalogic’s point, but you have been dodging it. There aren’t 1000s of people milling around on a family farm in the USA, like there are milling around the exotic meat markets of Wuhan. Full stop.

Indeed, this is the first time in history where these so-called “wet” meat markets are located in the middle of huge metropolises. Wuhan’s urban population is around 10 million, and the air quality there is very poor. There’s no farm like that.

Who knows how many plagues of the historical past were due to crowding, and unsanitary conditions that led to the spread of disease? Life expectancy has increased dramatically in the last ~150 years because of the rise of modern medicine, modern sanitation systems, improved hygiene, more nutritious diets, and so on.

Bats are a special case because they are known to harbor many viruses, which they carry without becoming ill, and viruses mutate. It’s what they do.

Bats are the natural reservoirs of a number of high-impact viral zoonoses. We present a quantitative analysis to address the hypothesis that bats are unique in their propensity to host zoonotic viruses based on a comparison with rodents, another important host order. We found that bats indeed host more zoonotic viruses per species than rodents, and we identified life-history and ecological factors that promote zoonotic viral richness.

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3574368/

This virus erupted in Wuhan, China not on a farm in Wisconsin, so conditions in Wuhan should be what interest us, not those on a typical family farm in the USA.

Hunters in the USA eat their own game, but that game is never bats.

You truly are confused. Bats are reservoirs of Coronaviruses but they need an intermediate host to transmit those zoonotic diseases to humans such as the Civet Cat sold in the Guangzhou Wet Market which were discovered to harbor the SARS virus. Chinese scientists could not find any animal sold in the Wuhan Wet Market that carried the Covid-19 virus. The Wuhan Wet Market didn’t sell bats but they sold Pangolins which were found to carry a Coronavirus matching only 99% of the RNA of the Covid-19 virus. No smoking gun means the Wuhan Wet Market theory could be ruled out.

Chinese authorities are now mulling on whether to ban live animals in wet markets. That means Chinese consumers will be able to consume only meat produced by factory-raised farm animals. This move will only favor large-scale corporate-owned factory farms over small-scale family-owned farms which is fast disappearing in China as it did in the USA. But factory farms don’t prevent the transmission of zoonotic diseases as was the case with the H1N1 swine flu epidemic that started in pig farms in the USA. That pandemic killed several hundred thousands of people all over the world in 2009/2010.

The other issue is whether wild animals should be sold to the public for their meat. China has banned the sale of exotic animals because they’re endangered species. That’s justified. But I was pointing out the fact that hunting for sport is a national pastime in the USA and other Western countries. Those are wild animals (as opposed to farm animals) whose meat is indeed consumed after they’re killed. If you’re saying that killing and eating wild animals whether sold in a Wet Market or hunted as sport is harmful to humans, then that is a false premise because its your proximity to animals that provide the opportunity to transmit zoonotic diseases. This was the point was I stressing.

Lastly, any animal such as dogs, cats, horses can carry viruses such as rabies that are transmittable to humans. Again, it’s your proximity to those animals which makes you susceptible to animal viruses.

You truly are confused. Bats are reservoirs of Coronaviruses but they need an intermediate host to transmit those zoonotic diseases to humans …

That “need” part is a theory, and not an established scientific fact. Who’s confused now?

Although bats are known to harbor a wide variety of coronaviruses, the mechanisms for virus spillover into humans or livestock are widely unknown. […] we know very little, if anything about how coronaviruses are transmitted directly to humans or if direct human transmission does not occur and spillover via an intermediate host is required.

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6356540/

Irrespective of whether or not the virus jumped directly to humans or required an intermediate host species, the consensus among most of the level-headed reports I’ve read indicate that the breakout occurred in Wuhan, where the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market reportedly had for sale around “120 wildlife animals across 75 species,” including bats, civet cats, and pangolins.

If any intermediate host species was required, there were plenty of available candidates among the unsanitary conditions at Huanan Market, where examples of genetic material from SARS-CoV-2 were found in cultures taken from the market.

As part of the hunt to track down the possible springboard animal host, a team of scientists descended on the Huanan market on orders from the China CDC on January 1 and again on January 12. They collected 585 “environmental samples” from countertops or animal traces or products left behind.

In that market there would have been “faeces on the floor, gut piles, there’s blood”, says Peter Daszak, president of the New York-based research organisation EcoHealth Alliance, who has been involved in research on bat coronaviruses in China and Southeast Asia for 15 years.

“They would have swabbed those floors, they would have swabbed around the stalls, with little swabs like earbuds, each one they would have put in a separate vial, and … taken them under very tight security back to the lab, and they’d tried to find the sequence of viruses from that,” he says.

Among those samples, 33 were found to contain the genetic material of the novel coronavirus. They were mainly collected from the western zone of the market where wildlife was sold, Chinese state media said on January 26.

    South China Morning Post

“It absolutely came from Wuhan,” Dr. Fauci said … “There’s no doubt about that.”

The consensus among experts researching the virus places the beginning of its spread at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, China.

    USA Today

Finally, I do not necessarily have anything against hunting per se, but some hunters are careless, just as some drivers are careless, and innocent people get killed as a result.

Other TSEs include bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle, scrapie in sheep and goats, and Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease and other human prion diseases in people, including variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (the human form of “mad cow disease”) in people.

“It absolutely came from Wuhan,” Dr. Fauci said … “There’s no doubt about that.”

    Dr. Fauci is absolutely incorrect.

Here’s an article from Nature dated Feb. 20, 2020:

Researchers at the South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou suggested pangolins as the animal source at a press conference on 7 February. Pangolins are highly sought-after in China for their meat and their scales; the latter are used in traditional medicine. Although sales of the animal are forbidden in China as part of a worldwide ban, they are still smuggled in from a handful of southeast Asian and African countries. The researchers said they had found a coronavirus in smuggled pangolins that was a 99% genetic match to the virus circulating in people.

But the result did not actually refer to the entire genome. In fact, it related to a specific site known as the receptor-binding domain (RBD), say the study’s authors, who posted their analysis1 on the biomedical preprint server bioRxiv on 20 February. The press-conference report was the result of an “embarrassing miscommunication between the bioinformatics group and the lab group of the study”, explains Xiao Lihua, a parasitologist at the South China Agricultural University and a co-author of the paper. A whole-genome comparison found that the pangolin and human viruses share 90.3% of their DNA.

The RBD is a crucial part of coronaviruses, which allows them to latch on to and enter a cell. Even a 99% similarity between the RBDs of the two viruses is not necessarily enough to link them, says Linfa Wang, a virologist at Duke–National University of Singapore Medical School who was part of the team that found the origin of the SARS virus.

Three similar comparison studies were posted on bioRxiv last week. One of those papers — by an international research group , posted on 18 February — found that coronaviruses in frozen cell samples from illegally trafficked pangolins shared between 85.5% and 92.4% of their DNA with the virus found in humans.

Two other papers published on 20 February, from groups in China, also studied coronaviruses from smuggled pangolins. The viruses were 90.23%3 and 91.02% similar, respectively, to the virus that causes COVID-19.

The genetic similarity should be higher than reported in these studies before the host can be identified, says Arinjay Banerjee, who studies coronaviruses at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. He notes that the SARS virus shared 99.8% of its genome with a civet coronavirus, which is why civets were considered the source. If pangolins are the origin of the current outbreak, says Banerjee, it is not the pangolins in these studies.

So far, the closest match to the human coronavirus has been found in a bat in China’s Yunnan province. A study published on 3 February found that the bat coronavirus shared 96% of its genetic material with the virus that causes COVID-19. Bats could have passed the virus to humans, but there are key differences between the RBD sites in the two viruses. This suggests that this specific bat coronavirus did not directly infect people, but could have been transmitted it to people through an intermediate host, say researchers.

The papers raise more questions than they answer, says Jiang Zhigang, an ecologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Zoology in Beijing. He asks, if pangolins are the source of the virus, and they came from another country, why haven’t there been reports of people being infected in that location?

In other words, their RNA was not close enough.

Additionally, since you seem to be a hunter who thinks wild game animals are always safe to eat, please see this:

No I am not a hunter nor was I defending hunting. I was merely pointing out that hunting wildlife for sport is a favorite pastime in the USA and other Western countries. The author of this article was calling the practice of selling live animals or eating wildlife “barbaric”. Nor does industrial-scale factory-raised farm animals prevent zoonotic diseases which this article seems to imply as the “civilized” way to slaughter animals. The H1N1 swine flu pandemic originated in factory-raised pig farms not in live animal markets in the USA.

The Western media keeps promoting the misconception that live animal markets or that consuming wildlife are to blame for zoonotic diseases. This is false as humans are far more likely to get animal viruses from prolonged contact due to close proximity to animals whether farm-raised or wildlife.

Wet markets are spread throughout South East Asia too and appear to be obvious danger spots for cross species infections in spite of their rarity to date. It’s domestic animals (pigs and fowls) that are still the major source of animal to human infections. Wet markets are spread throughout South East Asia too and appear to be obvious danger spots for cross species infections in spite of their rarity to date. It’s domestic animals (pigs and fowls) that are still the major source of animal to human infections.

Correct. Inter-species infections are rare because that would require the virus mutate to another form compatible to a different species. That’s why live animal markets have never been the source of viral pandemics even though they have been around for millennia. On the other hand, domesticated animals that are raised in factory farms make them MORE not less susceptible to viral pandemics because they’re packed together in tight cages which greatly increases the chances of inter-species transmission of animal viruses. Also, the viral load of any factory farm also increases the likelihood of animal-to-human transmissions. Small family farms don’t have those problems because the farm animals are allowed to loiter around their pens. Lastly, eating wild animals don’t cause zoonotic diseases because by the time you come into contact them they’re already dead meat.

The Western media keeps promoting this idiotic idea that somehow live animal markets or eating wild animals causes zoonotic diseases. Completely fabricated nonsense.

  172. Travel restrictions work extremely well initially when a country is virtually free from the virus, but once 1% of a state or country is infected, travel restrictions are meaningless. Trump for once had the right idea but it wasn’t properly or quickly implemented (probably through incompetence and laziness rather than #resistance). Fauci screwed the pooch not realizing how easily this spread and how asymptomatic visitors could spread the disease; he has since done an about face supporting the EU travel ban (although that’s closing the barn door after the livestock are gone). Blaming past mistakes doesn’t help (I’m sure Gov. Cuome wishes he had bought those 16,000 respirators five years ago. But he didn’t.)
The intense politicization of COVID-19 is a huge problem. Identifying hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) with Trump may prevent a PARTIALLY effective treatment (particularly when combined with azithromycin, zinc, vitamin D or other compounds; “untreatable” epidemics require doctors to use whatever they think might work. HCQ had a far amount of research done with it on SARS in 2004, and was used in Wuhan clinically with some positive effect. Like AIDS, no effective monotherapy is going to come from the FDA or CDC any time soon; at best maybe physicians can try combinations (HCQ+ amikacin+ zinc+ vitamin D, etc) on their dying patients. Cytokine storm has been implicated in the final stages of death by COVID-19; it is easily confirmed by a rise in ferritin, an acute phase protein, and at that stage glucocorticoids could be given, although contraindicated earlier in the infection when immunosuppression would make things worse. Governors in NY and Nevada have “outlawed” off-label use of HCQ; maybe they should let the physicians do the doctoring, and instead just whore for votes and political donations per usual.

That’s why live animal markets have never been the source of viral pandemics even though they have been around for millennia.

You don’t know that and neither does anyone else. Provide a source for your assertion please.

Recall that even after Huanan Markert had been disinfected, traces of the virus were found there, as I posted above.

Among those samples, 33 were found to contain the genetic material of the novel coronavirus. They were mainly collected from the western zone of the market where wildlife was sold, Chinese state media said on January 26.

This study says the virus is natural. You are free to address its shortcomings as you see them.

“By comparing the available genome sequence data for known coronavirus strains, we can firmly determine that SARS-CoV-2 originated through natural processes,” said Kristian Andersen, PhD, an associate professor of immunology and microbiology at Scripps Research and corresponding author on the paper.

I like reading Bro Nat but when I watch his vids I have my doubts. He apparently used to be a rock star in a 60’s Californian band, so maybe the flamboyance carries over from that pop star showmanship. Or maybe it’s just the case of: you can take the Jew out of Judaism but you can’t take the Jew out of the Jew. There was a bit of that with Bobby Fischer too in my opinion. But if it can’t be helped, it doesn’t detract from the content of their speeches.

You should listen to Bobby’s interviews about Japan and how he was surprised how pussified all the men were there. He says all the screws (prison guards) in the jail they held him in were homosexuals.

Dude, that story has already been debunked.

Among those samples, 33 were found to contain the genetic material of the novel coronavirus. They were mainly collected from the western zone of the market where wildlife was sold, Chinese state media said on January 26.

They initially found the RNA of the Pangolin to match 99% of Covid-19 but that have since been retracted because that study only compared parts of the genome. When they compared the whole genome, only 90% matched.

China was hit with several viral pandemics hitting its swine and poultry farms over the last two years killing millions of animals raised in factory farms. This had not happened in the past as most domesticated animals such as pigs and chickens were raised in family farms and sold in live animal markets. Now that China has industrialized its animal husbandry, these viral pandemics are now occurring at a regular rate.

Lastly, the H1N1 swine flu epidemic which killed several hundred thousands of people worldwide in 2009-2010 originated in pig farms in North America. Here’s the Wikipedia entry on swine flu:

Influenza is quite common in pigs, with about half of breeding pigs having been exposed to the virus in the US. Antibodies to the virus are also common in pigs in other countries.

The main route of transmission is through direct contact between infected and uninfected animals. These close contacts are particularly common during animal transport. Intensive farming may also increase the risk of transmission, as the pigs are raised in very close proximity to each other. The direct transfer of the virus probably occurs either by pigs touching noses, or through dried mucus. Airborne transmission through the aerosols produced by pigs coughing or sneezing are also an important means of infection. The virus usually spreads quickly through a herd, infecting all the pigs within just a few days. Transmission may also occur through wild animals, such as wild boar, which can spread the disease between farms.

People who work with poultry and swine, especially those with intense exposures, are at increased risk of zoonotic infection with influenza virus endemic in these animals, and constitute a population of human hosts in which zoonosis and reassortment can co-occur. Vaccination of these workers against influenza and surveillance for new influenza strains among this population may therefore be an important public health measure. Transmission of influenza from swine to humans who work with swine was documented in a small surveillance study performed in 2004 at the University of Iowa. This study, among others, forms the basis of a recommendation that people whose jobs involve handling poultry and swine be the focus of increased public health surveillance. Other professions at particular risk of infection are veterinarians and meat processing workers, although the risk of infection for both of these groups is lower than that of farm workers.

Coronavirus: Pangolins found to carry related viruses
    By Helen Briggs
    March 26, 2020

Smuggled pangolins have been found to carry viruses closely related to the one sweeping the world.

Scientists say the sale of the animals in wildlife markets should be strictly prohibited to minimise the risk of future outbreaks.

Pangolins are the most-commonly illegally trafficked mammal, used both as food and in traditional medicine.

In research published in the journal Nature, researchers say handling these animals requires “caution”.

And they say further surveillance of wild pangolins is needed to understand their role in the risk of future transmission to humans.

Despite confirmation that pangolins carry viruses closely related to the one behind Covid-19 (a virus known as SARS-CoV-2), exactly how the virus jumped from wild animals to humans remains a mystery.

The horseshoe bat and now the pangolin have both been implicated, but the precise sequence of events is unknown.

Commenting on the study, Dr Dan Challender of the University of Oxford, said pangolins are known to host various strains of coronaviruses.

He added: “Identifying the source of SARS-CoV-2 is important to understand the emergence of the current pandemic, and in preventing similar events in the future.”

The ant-devouring scaly mammal, said to be the most widely trafficked mammal in the world, is threatened with extinction. The animal’s scales are in high demand in Asia for use in traditional Chinese medicine, while pangolin meat is considered a delicacy.

Elisa Panjang of Cardiff University, a pangolin conservation officer at the Danau Field Centre in Malaysia, said it would be devastating if the report led to persecution of pangolins.

“This is the time for the international community to pressure their governments to end illegal wildlife trade,” she said.

China has moved to ban the consumption of meat from wild animals in the wake of the outbreak. Similar moves are being considered in Vietnam.

Note how deceptively misleading this BBC article is. The whole story tries to paint the Chinese as the culprits for the Covid-19 pandemic because they eat Pangolins as part of traditional Chinese medicine. The story then claims that the viruses found in Pangolins are “related” to Covid-19 by quoting Dr Dan Challender of the University of Oxford. But nowhere did Dr. Challender say that the Covid-19 virus came from Pangolins. Next the story moves to virtue signalling: Chinese should not eat Pangolins because they’re endangered species.

This is a rehash of the fake news about Chinese eating bats which the Western Media concocted out of thin air by using a photo of a Chinese woman eating bat soup in Palau which is a Pacific Island nation where bats are a delicacy but not in China. They not only lied about bats being a Chinese delicacy sold in the Wuhan Wet Market but also lied that the Covid-19 virus came from bats.

The Western Media is now trying to promote this latest fake news because it’s much more credible as Pangolins are indeed a Chinese delicacy which were indeed sold in the Wuhan Wet Market.

    You said:

This is a rehash of the fake news about Chinese eating bats which the Western Media concocted out of thin air

According to the Wikipedia article, several species of bats are consumed in S. China for food, and also used for folk medicine.

In East Asia, specifically southern China, bats are sometimes eaten and can be found in some markets. Specific bat species eaten in China include the cave nectar bat, Pomona roundleaf bat, Indian flying fox, and Leschenault’s rousette. Additionally, the greater short-nosed fruit bat is hunted for medicine, but not food. Bat meat is not especially popular in China. It has been contested whether or not the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, suspected as having ties with the COVID-19 outbreak, sold bat meat, where the meat is reportedly not a frequent food source in the city of Wuhan.

I think you are playing fast and loose with the facts. I looked at those three links you gave, but there’s nothing in any of them that refutes or debunks SCMP’s report that traces of the novel cornavirus were found at Huanan Market, even after it had been disinfected.

The title of your second link says it all “Wuhan seafood market may not be source of novel virus spreading globally.”

“May not” does not mean “was not.”

If it said “Wuhan seafood market was not source of novel virus spreading globally,” then you would have something, but that’s not what it said, and for now at least, the case is still open.

This morning Mar. 27, 2020, my Yahoo news feed has an article “COVID study deals blow to conspiracy theorists,” with a sub-heading “Virus didn’t originate at Wuhan market”

The mutation in surface proteins, according to [Dr. Robert] Garry, could have triggered the outbreak of the pandemic, but it’s also possible that a less severe version of the illness was circulating through the population for years, perhaps even decades, before escalating to this point.

“We don’t know if those mutations were picked up more recently or a long time ago,” Garry told ABC News. “It’s impossible to say if it actually was a mutation that triggered the pandemic, but either way, it would have been a naturally occurring process.”

And while many believe the virus originated at a fish market in Wuhan, China, Garry said that is also a misconception.

“Our analyses, and others too, point to an earlier origin than that,” Garry said. “There were definitely cases there, but that wasn’t the origin of the virus.”

    https://www.yahoo.com/gma/sorry-conspiracy-theorists-study-concludes-covid-19-not-090026698–abc-news-topstories.html

Earlier work by Dr. Kevin Olival and others at the EcoHealth Alliance had demonstrated direct infection of human cells by a novel cornavirus in a laboratory petri dish, and had also recorded low-level coronavirus infections in Chinese villagers.

At that time, Olival and his colleagues were also in the process of collecting samples from thousands of bats in China.

Fast-forward to the present day. Olival says what they found is alarming: “We found evidence for, in total, from all the sampling we did in China, about 400 new strains of coronaviruses.”

“What we showed was that SARS-related viruses in these bat populations have the potential to go directly into human cells and do not need that extra mutational step [of] infecting another host.”

Olival says the fact that a bat coronavirus had at least this biological ability in a lab setting raised an obvious next question: Is there evidence that these viruses are infecting people in the real world?

So the researchers started taking blood samples from villagers in China who lived near some of the bat caves they’d been studying.

Hongying Li is an ecologist with EcoHealth Alliance. She says there were any number of ways these people seemed at risk of inadvertently coming into contact with bat saliva, urine or poop.

“In some places you could find bats roosting in people’s homes,” she says. “A lot of people reported, ‘Once a bat flew into my house and I killed it’ or ‘Bats ate the fruits in my backyard.’ ”

And people even visited the bat caves, says Li. The caves were a particularly popular hangout in the summer, when they provided respite from the heat.

“When we went to the caves for sampling, we’d usually see people’s beer bottles and water bottles,” says Li.

She and her colleagues checked the villagers’ blood for signs of recent infections with bat coronaviruses. The team did this again with people in some other rural areas. Each time, says Li, “we found coronaviruses that had already spilled over into the human population.”

These were multiple mini-outbreaks that had gone undetected.

Olival says this discovery was a huge red flag: “The signal is there that these SARS-related viruses were jumping into people even if they weren’t causing any noticeable disease.”

Indeed, people might have even had symptoms, but health authorities simply never picked up on it.

    https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2020/02/20/807742861/new-research-bats-harbor-hundreds-of-coronaviruses-and-spillovers-arent-rare

Study of reconstructions of the virus responsible for the 1918 pandemic indicate it had been circulating for some time, as early as the period 1900 – 1915, presumably in a less-virulent form, so there is some parallel with this current ongoing pandemic, where a naturally circulating virus mutates over time, sometimes into a very virulent form that seems to explode when it falls upon a concentration of suitable hosts

Bat meat is not especially popular in China. It has been contested whether or not the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, suspected as having ties with the COVID-19 outbreak, sold bat meat, where the meat is reportedly not a frequent food source in the city of Wuhan.

Dude, give up on the bat-soup thing which is yet another fake news from the Western Media.

The title of your second link says it all “Wuhan seafood market may not be source of novel virus spreading globally.”

“May not” does not mean “was not.”

Look, it didn’t say “was” either which is what the Western Media keeps promoting until later stories came out. So no evidence that the Wuhan seafood market was the source. The fact that there are traces of the Covid-19 virus there does not prove the animal-to-human transmission took place there. For all we know, somebody carried the Covid-19 virus to spread it there.

  183. Sparkon says:

Yahoo has deleted that story I linked in my #183. Here is what appears to be the original story from ABC News:

    https://abcnews.go.com/US/conspiracy-theorists-study-concludes-covid-19-laboratory-construct/story?id=69827832

The mutation in surface proteins, according to Garry, could have triggered the outbreak of the pandemic, but it’s also possible that a less severe version of the illness was circulating through the population for years, perhaps even decades,

That idea comports with the findings of Dr. Olival et al at EcoHealth Alliance that some bat cornoviruses could directly attack humans, and cause low level infections that circulate for some time without attracting the attention of public health authorities.

Each time, says Li, “we found coronaviruses that had already spilled over into the human population.”

These were multiple mini-outbreaks that had gone undetected.

    […]

Which brings us to this current coronavirus outbreak. As soon as it started, EcoHealth Alliance’s longtime collaborators in China (principally researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital) compared the new virus with the bat samples they’d collected. They found an extremely close match.

“A viral taxonomist would probably call that the same virus species,” says Olival.

That suggests this current outbreak — which has infected tens of thousands of people — could have come directly from bats, says Olival.

    — NPR

To summarize: some Chinese have been exposed to bats known to carry a wide variety of coronaviruses. That exposure would not be limited to, or even require, eating bats at all, but there is good evidence that some Chinese do consume bats.

After the SARS epidemic, the team did not find many bats in the wildlife market, Daszak said, but noticed that people were “hunting them in the wild and selling directly to restaurants.”

Tests show that some Chinese living near bat caves had antibodies against some bat coronaviruses, giving credence to the theory that some coronoviruses jump directly from bats to humans. It is plausible that these coronaviruses had been circulating — and perhaps mutating — in humans for some time before erupting in Wuhan.
