In the demon haunted world department, several state government employees at a residential center for severely intellectually disabled in Pueblo, Colorado told federal investigators that they attributed the fact that residents had words such as “die”, “kill” and “I’m back” in their skin to paranormal activity, rather than considering the possibility of abuse. (Most residents aren’t literate.) Instead, the posted pictures on social media as proof that ghosts were real.

Superstition was not the only problem, of course.
Despite a 3.25 staff to 1 resident staffing ratio (now more like 3.6), the management of the facility was awful.
Five percent of the residents died because they did not receive proper medical care (despite the fact that all the residents were all non-elderly adults without serious physical disabilities) in the eighteen month time span of mismanagement.
At least a third were physically assaulted or abused by staff (e.g. locked outdoors in the winter cold for hours without winter clothing), at least several were raped by staff, 90% were on mental health drugs (mostly without properly obtained prescriptions) despite the fact that the center was for low IQ individuals rather than for the mentally ill, and all were strip searched in a manner contrary to legal protocols.
