What’s going on?

51I89uOM0AL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_ Very busy, so haven’t gotten much further in The Dialectical Imagination, but I do have to say that the distinction between “positive freedom” and “negative freedom” is a useful one to highlight at this point. The comments below make me unsure about the influence of the Frankfurt School on modern socio-political movements, but the ideal of a utopian end state for society which enshrine a vision of the good definitely seems to be one of the things that moderns have lost. Rather, a lot of identity politics talk seems to be about positional games and status competition. The perpetual revolution.

At the suggestion of a reader I purchased Explaining Postmodernism. The Kindle version is $4.99.

There was an ancient DNA convention in England. It turns out that the original Polynesians may not have had much Melanesian ancestry, implying multiple migrations into Far Oceania.

The impact of recent population history on the deleterious mutation load in humans and close evolutionary relatives.

  1. A Motown master piece from 1971:

What’s Going On is the eleventh studio album by soul musician Marvin Gaye, released May 21, 1971, on the Motown-subsidiary label Tamla Records. Recording sessions for the album took place in June 1970 and March–May 1971 at Hitsville U.S.A., Golden World and United Sound Studios in Detroit and at The Sound Factory in West Hollywood, California. What’s Going On was the first album on which Motown Records’ main studio band, the group of session musicians known as the Funk Brothers, received an official credit.

    * * *

What’s Going On was an immediate success upon release, both commercially and critically. Having endured as a classic of 1970s soul. … Worldwide surveys of critics, musicians, and the general public have shown that What’s Going On is regarded as one of the landmark recordings in pop music history, and one of the greatest albums of the 20th century.

    What’s Goin’ On
    Marvin Gaye

    Mother, mother
There’s too many of you crying

    Brother, brother, brother
There’s far too many of you dying
You know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some loving here today – Ya

    Father, father
    We don’t need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some loving here today

    Picket lines and picket signs
    Don’t punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
    Oh, what’s going on
    What’s going on
    Ya, what’s going on
    Ah, what’s going on
    In the mean time
    Right on, baby
    Right on
    Right on

Mother, mother, everybody thinks we’re wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today

    Oh
    Picket lines and picket signs
    Don’t punish me with brutality
    Talk to me
    So you can see
    What’s going on
    Ya, what’s going on
    Tell me what’s going on
I’ll tell you what’s going on – Uh
    Right on baby
    Right on baby

Songwriters: Alfred Cleveland / Alfred W Cleveland / Marvin Gaye / Marvin P Gaye / Renaldo Benson

  2. Found Andrew MacLeod’s youtube channel and you might like it.

He does a lot of stuff. Started following him on twitter after I saw a video of a panel he was in with Edward Luttwak, the political analyst.

He is @AndrewMMacLeod on twitter and uploads videos of talks and places he visits.

These two videos on Armenia are pretty interesting. He comments on the second video that if a new war between Islam and the West (secular, Christian) occurs, Armenia would be the battleground.

He mentioned in a recent article he could be related to Trump (ha!): http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/donald-trump-will-win-the-us-presidency-by-a-landslide-dont-underestimate-him-yet-again-a7051686.html

  3. The comments below make me unsure about the influence of the Frankfurt School on modern socio-political movements

Cultural Marxism attacked the glue that held things together – where things spin off to after the glue is removed is semi-random.

  4. You don’t have to let this go to print.

I don’t know if others have this issue, but your site takes an amazingly long time to load on my smart phone. Even when on a very fast WiFi network, nearly 45 seconds. And it slows all of the other tabs loading at the same time.

I do not have this issue with any other site I visit, and it doesn’t matter which phone I use or which connection I am using.

    Just FYI.
