Well, there was an earthquake in Northern California. Everyone’s OK here, though it wasn’t exactly a minor event across the region.

  1. Razib, what do you think about neo-reactionaries and their theories.

They have some interesting racial theories. According to this guy, Jim, the ancient egyptian upper class was white, and ancient west asians were white, and supposedly became browner through mixing with arab (where did they come from, space?). The persians, and kurds were also white once like ashkenazi jews, he says, but became brown through mixing with arabs as well. Only the ashkenazi jews conserved the ancient white aryan middle-eastern genes, he says.

I am not making this up.

What is motivating people to come up with bullshit of this calibre?

Among many groups in the mid east you do see light hair and eye colors and light skin. Are these people representative at all of the people before Arabs came through?

Some Yazidi children who could easily be called "white":

  2. too busy to follow the link and read in detail, though u seem to characterize it right. you’re not shitting me? lol. there has been admixture. but this interpretation strikes me as moronic.

  3. I think the internet has allowed autistic people to proliferate online in large congregations like nothing before.

anyone know the true low-down on this dude’s hobby horse? (MAOA gene correlations) how much should i believe this, if at all? I think i remember him being banned from here or somewhere…

People on HBD blogs tend to overestimate how white certain middle eastern populations look. You can find individuals and families that can pass for northern Europeans. But if you look at a picture of a random street in one of these countries, you see that such people are a small minority. I think that applies to almost every group in the Middle East, even the relatively white Yazidis.
  6. #5, read some genetics. phenotypic can confuse. this isn’t speculation. we have DNA from indigenous groups like assyrians. they’re clearly middle eastern, albeit with less admixture from south arab and african and mongol sources than muslims in the region. and arabs, turks, and persians actually consider themselves white.

  8. Razib says Assyrians are ‘middle eastern’ but this needs clarification because its just a geographical label and ones that’s problematic as well. Stands to reason that Assyrians would be related to their neighbours, but there is a north-south or upland-lowland split within the ‘middle east’ rather than a Middle East distinct from Europe. The distinction matches a biogeographical fault line related to ecology.

Dienekes is treating components as though they were populations below, and the West Asian component is far from closest to the Southwest Asian among western Eurasians.

  9. The white Viking-lookalike Yezidis the media has been singling out for photographs represent the old Achaemenid & Parthian self-image seen in depictions. Specifically this type below arose from the mixing of Irano-Afghan and Corded people still further east.

The reason there are so many blond Yezidi children in the news media is because their hair turns darker as they age rather than them staying light haired for life.

Von Luschan actually found most Yezidi to be Alpines, in his viewdescended from the wave of migration into Anatolia that brought the Hittites. This Alpine type tans more easily and is more usually dark haired and eyed as well. But they’re not as photogenic.

  10. 1) stop using terms like ‘alpine.’ it’s just stupid.

    2) we have some analysis of kurdish genetics. they’re middle eastern, like armenians are middle eastern. just less admixture than arabs of the lowlands.

  11. http://medicalxpress.com/news/2014-08-childhood-hungry-human-brain.html#ajTabs
is sort of a sleeper article
In part : ‘The study helps to solve the long-standing mystery of why human children grow so slowly compared with our closest animal relatives.

It shows that energy funneled to the brain dominates the human body’s metabolism early in life and is likely the reason why humans grow at a pace more typical of a reptile than a mammal during childhood. ”
One can (carefully) flip this around and use rate of weight gained during childhood as a token for energy funneled to the brain.
There is much made about higher or lower birth and child weight in non-white groups. And ascribing it to social/environmental differences. When there may well be genetic factors at play (better put :the genetic differences may have a significant effect on the total variance)So differences in percentage of total energy funneled to brain growth could be a major source of such variation.
