My Big Five Personality Profile

The Big Five personality traits are apparently much more scientifically accepted than the Myers-Briggs categories (to be more precise, the latter have no scientific support, while the former have some). So I just took a Big Five test which matches you up with a particular president. I have no idea how it does this, but I guessed ahead of time correctly which president would be my match. I think long time readers of this blog will not be surprised by the fact that it suggests I have high extroversion and low agreeableness.

Bully for you!
Teddy was a jerk. Try not to start a way with Spain.
Now I’m imagining you as the fellow in the boarding house in Arsenic and Old Lace, leading the charge on San Juan Hill every time you go upstairs.
Thomas Jefferson.
I got Obama, which I wasn’t expecting. Low extroversion, high openness, high agreeableness, low conscientiousness, and low neuroticism. The low conscientiousness is the only thing I differ from strongly with Barry O. But I’m guessing there haven’t been too many presidents who are as sloppy, easily distracted, and disorganized as I am. =)
If Obama has low extroversion, the modal human is Rain Man and I’m a stone.
(I got James Madison, whom I know pretty much nothing about.)
Karl Zimmerman: Me too, although I seem to be considerably below Obama (~ 30 pts) on openness and above him (~ 40 pts) on neuroticism. What a charming combination!
I had difficulty with a lot of the questions, esp. the ones that were conjunctions of two clauses that I don’t believe fit together very well; e.g., one that was roughly “All values are relative and everyone has their own truth.”
Also, curious to know who filled out the test for each president.
Sandgroper: I assume that you don’t have any slaves to diddle, but also, don’t sleep with your wife’s sister.
toto: Madison was the president with the least stature, and his wife was quite the doll.
Out of 25 presidents, I am most like Thomas Jefferson.
I had rather be shut up in a very modest cottage, with my books, my family, and a few old friends, dining on simple bacon, and letting the world roll on as it liked, than to occupy the most splendid post which any human power can give. – Thomas Jefferson
Compared to the general population, you are:
Below average on Extroversion, indicating that you are an introvert who prefers calm environments to large social gatherings.
Average on Openness, indicating that you prefer to strike a balance between seeking out novelty and preserving the status quo.
Average on Agreeableness, indicating that you alternate between being tenderhearted in some situations and tough-minded in others.
Below average on Conscientiousness, indicating that you are flexible with regards to goals and deadlines and that you improvise and constantly update the course as you pursue your goals.
High on Neuroticism, indicating that you are quick to respond to changes in your environment and that you react strongly to both good and bad news.
According to a study done by Jeffery J. Mondak, Ph.D., your scores indicate that you are:
Less likely to favor military intervention as a means of solving foreign policy problems.
More likely to think that international cooperation will solve foreign policy problems.
Less likely to take an active interest in your community, preferring instead to go your own way.
More likely to be cosmopolitan in tastes and less likely to be patriotic and proud of your country.
Less likely to enjoy romantic fiction than the rest of the population.
Less likely to have a tolerant attitude towards smoking.
More likely to favor harsh criminal punishments over milder ones.
Less likely to watch TV and read the news, preferring instead to follow your own interests.
Less likely to mobilize your friends in your own interests, preferring instead to immerse yourself in your interests in solitude.
Someone who seems impassive to others, while being in fact quite sure of your own views.
Less likely to enjoy fitness training and physical exercise.
Less likely to believe in any kind of dogma that you regard as settled in stone.
More likely to flirt with harm and danger.
More likely to have insurance or to belong to a labor union.
According to a study done by Jayme Neiman, Ph.D., your scores indicate that you are:
Amazingly, your personality is simply too smooth and well-rounded for Dr. Neiman’s study to be able to say anything about you.
Myers-Briggs is significantly correlated with Big Five – some of the components like extraversion completely overlap; neuroticism has the least overlap. An academic discussion of the overlaps and the independent validations of each approach can be found in a 1995 paper by Harvey, et al.
I compared the M-B scores of my children to those of myself and their mom about a year ago and was amused to discovery the highly non-random correlations involved. Both of my children scored essentially the same on M-B, confirming parental results in the two cases where mom and dad had the same result, and splitting the difference of the two cases where mom and dad differed (i.e. essentially exactly what one would expect if these outcomes were perfectly heritable). Of course, in the literature, heritability of personality traits in systems like these is closer to 50% (47%-57% for Big Five traits in twin studies).
Some traits that aren’t part of more comprehensive personality profiling systems have higher heritability. For example, the heritability of anti-social behavior in young boys is about 72% and due to a combination of IQ (12% a small portion), ADHD (a small portion) and anti-social specific trait inheritance (the predominant portion 61%); IQ has almost no impact on anti-social behavior in girls independent of comorbid ADHD, but ADHD is highly predictive of anti-social behavior in young girls.
An interesting open access paper criticizing modern personality testing instruments generally found that while men and women appear to be similar in many “forest level” personality traits, that if you get down into the “trees” that there is only about a 10% overlap between the personality profiles of women and those of men – suggesting that these tests are guilty of excessive lumping in the interest of a perception of gender equality.
I, too, was compared to James Madison:

Compared to the general population, you are:
Below average on Extroversion, indicating that you are somewhere in between a pure extrovert and a pure introvert – an “ambivert.”
Average on Openness, indicating that you prefer to strike a balance between seeking out novelty and preserving the status quo.
Above average on Agreeableness, indicating that you are very empathic, tolerant of others, and socially adaptive.
Above average on Conscientiousness, indicating that you are focused when it comes to goals and deadlines and like to complete your goals and tasks before starting new ones.
Average on Neuroticism, indicating that you respond adequately to changes in your environment and feel some measure of stress under pressure without letting it get to you.
***
Here is my favorite conclusion, however:

According to a study done by Jayme Neiman, Ph.D., your scores indicate that you are:
Amazingly, your personality is simply too smooth and well-rounded for Dr. Neiman’s study to be able to say anything about you.

Oh, if only . . . !
The test says Abe Lincoln. What? Going in I figured I’d get Dick Nixon or maybe Harry Truman. Wow and go figure…
Personality tests are amusing. The most interesting part about the big 5 personality test for me is the value judgments that are within it. We get to see the values of both the test creator and the test taker (and how they see themselves). I received Obama too. I was administered the official MBTI test and I was given the letters ENTP. The website gave Obama the same letters as me while Theodore Roosevelt was labeled ESTP. I think all of this is derived from the ancient Greeks (Hippocrates’ four temperaments) like so many other things.
George Washington, and it’s true I hate broccoli.
I got John Adams. Average on Extroversion, above average on Openness, below average on Agreeableness, and high on Neuroticism. I’d have to say pretty spot-on and running my results past my husband, he agrees. Most of the bullet list of more/less likely’s pretty accurate, too, with some glaring inaccuracies. No, I am not more likely to enjoy romantic fiction and people who know me would be amused that I’m more likely to go to prison! Say’s I’m more likely to like broccoli (yep, so long as it’s stir fried in soy sauce) and arugula (?). I think ‘like’ is a strong word for how I feel about arugula. Went on to take the Jung type test and got ESTJ. I took the test, a different version, and got ESTJ that time too, so there you go.
Thomas Jefferson. I find much about him that is admirable and unfortunately a number of things quite disagreeable. Mere human.
Bill Clinton.
I think the comment about commonalities between Myers Briggs and Big Five is accurate. I remember having the same Myers Briggs profile as Razib, and my result here was similar except on Neuroticism, which makes sense if it has the least overlap.
I got Clinton! Does this make me a Psychopath? I haven’t the least interest in women with piano legs.
i’ll trade – i got jefferson – tho i don’t have his amorous predilections. personality transplant anyone? Razib’s pattern looks way more fun. i’m low on Extroversion, high on Openness, high on Agreeableness (damnit!), way too high on Conscientiousness to ever have any fun (or to even like fun), & high on Neuroticism, which sucks (b/c high C + high N = OCD waiting to happen!) crap, i failed that test.
I got Thomas Jefferson – a fellow Irishman, who would have guessed!
Compared to the general population, you are:

– High on Openness, indicating that you are very impatient with the way things are and always on the look for the new, the untested, and the untried.
– Low on Agreeableness, indicating that you are often seen as critical, tough and domineering in social situations.
