better Due to the late unpleasantness certain images of me are floating around the web. To the left is a photo that people can use if they so choose in the future. Just click the link and a much bigger file will pop up. I am not anticipating that this will be needed, but you never know.

P.S. Example, Ebony didn’t ask for permission to use this photo, which is my own (can be found at a lab website).

  1. I like your shirt.

  2. FWIW, the Soylent 1.4 photo looks better.

I agree, and here is a high res version of the soylent picture. It has about the same number of pixels as the NYT picture, but the lighting is poor, so it doesn't have quite so much information. Moreover, the obscured chin may make it inappropriate for some uses.

  3. Seems like you’re challenging your readers to make a meme out of you.

lol. no. it's just that some publications are using low rez photos from back when i was traveling in europe in 2010. not a biggie.

  6. The one with your (late) cat with the two of you staring out at the horizon was pretty badass IMHO.

  7. I guess that’s OK, but I think a pic wearing a natty navy pinstripe double breasted suit with maybe a fedora would be a bit better. For the full ‘illegitimati non caborundum est’ effect.

  8. I think I’d shave the sideburns and get the mole surgically removed. Otherwise – perfect.

  9. You should at least put on a suit and tie, smirk, grip a badass cane, have some beakers of neon kool Aid in the background…really play up the whole dark side of science boogey man thing.

  10. Wow,

You with grey hair is a bit hard to accept. Even I’m not that grey.

It's only a little on the sides for Chris' sake . It makes him look distinguished . If he was my local news reader I'd believe what ever he had to say .

  11. Better grow the hair out a bit so the skinhead label won’t stick.

  13. Mishima Yukio said he followed Thomas Mann’s habit of wearing formal suits to public appearances in order to confuse people about the nature of his politics. I like the photo Derb used of you flashing gang signs.

More seriously, this photo is not flattering. Leaning into the camera and mouth half open are both things to avoid. If you need a publicity photo, same shirt and background with shoulders back, a smile, and a 3/4 view would be much better for you.

Leaning into the camera isn't always bad, but the open mouth definitely looks bad.

Razib has posted many better pictures of himself than this one.

  15. I’m a fan and a trained photographer. My suggestion is that you have someone with some training take a portrait of you and use that on all occasions. You have no control over what others post, but it really does help to have one good “authorized” image.

Most people are lazy and will defer to what you put out as your image.
