A while ago I posted about a gossip column ‘blind item’ which asked:

“which Oscar-winning Hollywood superstar’s doctor claims she was born a hermaphrodite, with undescended testes where her ovaries should have been? (and no, it’s not Jamie Lee Curtis)”.

It appears now to be officially confirmed that Angelina Jolie is pregnant, so unless there is some elaborate con going on, we can rule her out!

  1. My guess:

That girl from MONSTER. She got big bones.

    Charlize Theron.

  2. I second Liv’s speculation. I’ve always noted that Ms. Theron is not very attractive due to the fact that she is pretty non-curvy and big-boned, not to mention fairly tall for a female.

  3. After reading your 2004 posting on this topic, it occurs to me that an actress who has had a child cannot necessarily be taken off the list of possible AIS sufferers. It would not be beyond the ability of a wealthy celebrity to fake a pregnancy and arrange for adoption of a newborn at the appropriate time. One thing that may help maintain such deceptions is the fact that people in close contact with celebrities, such as personal assistants and household workers, often are required to sign ironclad confidentiality agreements.
There’s at least one likely case of a faked celebrity pregnancy. Years also, Phil Spector reportedly forced his wife Ronnie Spector to feign pregnancy, complete with the adoption of a mixed-race infant.

  4. While AIS may cause interesting physiological effects, what about behavior?

If testosterone is converted to estradiol in the brain and that cause masculinization of behavior, it would seem that such individuals would look hyper-female but behave like tomboys…

  5. Odd, I think that Charlize Theron and Jamie Lee Curtis are both very attractive. But I’ve always had a strong preference for tomboys.

  6. A Chinese friend of mine told me once that such “women” were known in China by a term that translates as “White Tiger” – referring to lack of pubic hair and ferocity – as they are very feminine looking, yet are very sexually charged. He said that in the past, they were much sought after as concubines.

  7. Well, Sharon Stone comes to mind. And it may not be someone living if her doctor is confident he isn’t breaching patient confidentiality: Katherine Hepburn is an obvious candidate.

  8. IIRC Katherine Hepburn had a secret child early in her career, which was given up for adoption. (Apologies if I am confusing her with another actress.)

I don’t recall that Sharon Stone has won an Oscar.

The prime suspects (if the story is true at all) now seem to be Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron, and Halle Berry.

  9. …I can’t find any evidence that Katherine Hepburn had a child, so I probably misremembered.

However, according to IMDB she was menstruating during the filming of ‘African Queen’, which seems to rule out AIS.

Sharon Stone was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar in ‘Casino’, but didn’t get it.

  10. If we’re including deceased actresses, then how about Joan Crawford!

  11. Oh, just read the original post, and this possibility was tentatively ‘ruled out’. It’s gotta be a false rumor, because if it’s not, well, for shame. What kind of doctor spills the beans like this?

  12. Nicole Kidman is a suspect. http://annierichards.tripod.com/ais.htm
But cmon, look at her. If you can find anything masculine in her, God save us all women.
So if thats your answer. I would assume this rumor was started to save Tom Cruise’s image as an impotent man. After all, Tom Cruise is a billion dollar business. Who would want to see a movie of an impotent “mission impossible” man?
If there is really an answer besides Nicole and you are not giving it up anytime soon, I would guess you’re Tom’s PR manager.
Thats enough conspiracy theory to last the day.

  13. The thing about androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) is that the subjects are completely free of the effects of testosterone, and thus more feminine in habitus and hairlessness than true females, who normally have low levels of testosterone and manifest its effects. So we should be looking the most feminine, stunning example of the “female”, free from all effects of testosterone. Nicole Kidman works for me, or for that matter, Charlize Theron.

  14. Okay, I can’t believe I am being drawn into this thread, but didn’t Nicole Kidman suffer a miscarriage right around the time of her divorce?

  15. Hilary Swank is a good candidate. There is something v. masculine @ her face.

  16. IIRC I was the first person to suggest Angelina Jolie on the original thread, oh well I was wrong. The most likely answer is that there are no AIS oscar winning actresses, false rumours about the gender of hollywood actresses have gone on for decades Mae West being an early example.

  17. “I would assume this rumor was started to save Tom Cruise’s image as an impotent man. After all, Tom Cruise is a billion dollar business. Who would want to see a movie of an impotent “mission impossible” man?”

I think you meant to say the opposite.
    What about “Emission Impossible”?

  18. The thing about androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) is that the subjects are completely free of the effects of testosterone

Would an XX woman with AIS be perfectly normal?

  19. David,

I don’t think so, as IIRC normal XX women have some testerone produced in the ovaries and or adrenals.

  20. My guess is that the rumor is baseless, but if you really wanted to check, you could ask past boyfriends of suspected individuals: “Do you recall how much armpit or pubic hair Bla-Bla had? Do you recall her having any upper lip or sideburn hair?” AIS women would’ve had little to none. Also, “Do you recall the extent to which she suffered from acne during adolescence?” AIS women would’ve had little to none. Of course, you couldn’t say it was to investigate AIS, but I don’t know how you’d inquire about such things tactfully.

  21. I don’t think so, as IIRC normal XX women have some testerone produced in the ovaries and or adrenals.

I know that. My question is whether this is important for any critical functions, i.e. whether these women would be considered “abnormal”.

  22. “There’s at least one likely case of a faked celebrity pregnancy. Years also, Phil Spector reportedly forced his wife Ronnie Spector to feign pregnancy, complete with the adoption of a mixed-race infant.”

Much more difficult to do in this day and age, with 24/7 paparazzi coverage. A pregnancy would be impossible to fake in this day & age. I think celebs are more likely to cover up fertility treatments and difficult pregnancies, such as Julia Roberts reportedly had.

  23. David,
The AIS mutation is on the X chromosome, and is thus a sex-linked recessive trait. A homozygous AIS female would be exceedingly rare and I don’t know if any have been described; more likely is the heterozygous carrier state. These carrier females have been shown to have reduced axillary and pubic hair, and reduced adolescent acne. As in all X-linked traits, the male manifests greater effects since he has only one X chromosome.

  24. Julia Roberts. Look at her from the shoulders up – clearly a bloke.

  25. If it is a sex-linked recessive trait it cannot manifest itself in any way in an XX female.
The trait is on the X chromosome and thuse, a male cannot pass it on to a child because they are infertile and have AIS.
On another front, retrospectively, I had a girlfriend a long time ago who had AIS (discovered after the House episode) and there was no external clue whatsoever.
AIS females are typically tall, 5’7″ and up, fairly large boned yet have exaggerated female characteristics, hips, breasts, facial features. Many are athletic or model material. Several have been discovered through testing at the Olympics, far more than would be expected in a normal cross section of the general population. If you are picking a candidate based on looking tomboyish or masculine, you are probably wrong.
