Elon Musk had mused in the past about buying or starting a social network to promote free speech. Former Twitter chief Jack Dorsey, who resisted calls for censorship longer than many other Big Tech leaders, recently said he regrets the role Twitter played in “centralizing” the internet. Mr. Dorsey said he is “working on” a more decentralized internet. That is good for us.
That said, many Americans don’t value free speech. President Joe Biden reportedly “assessed” Fox News as “one of the most destructive forces in the world,” and Rupert Murdoch was “the most dangerous man in the world.” The article that reported these comments said many of the president’s supporters blame Mr. Murdoch for “enabling” Tucker Carlson. Progressives are again trying to “cancel” Mr. Carlson, this time because of his views on Ukraine and American nonintervention.
No respectable news outlet or TV Station would keep Tucker Carlson on staff after his disgusting show of support for Putin.

What’s far stranger is why interactions between blacks and whites become national news. Why was George Floyd anything more than a local story? Why was Amy Cooper, who called the police on a black man, turned into a villain by the press? Why do most national media outlets ignore even the most horrific black-on-white crimes? Elon Musk’s cult of personality — which he is very aware of, and which he enjoys — depends on him trying to revolutionize Twitter policy and succeeding. If he fails, it might even be the case that his fanboys will demand that he dumps the company and goes all in on an alternative.
He wants to be a hero – and his fans want him to be one, too, so I am confident he will take some kind of action.
The irony is that some of these alt tech sites like Gab have really had a good showing and become self-sustaining. A really successful series of policy changes at twitter could really hurt the parallel economy that Torba wants to build.
Just like how Communists said that their chances for revolution in America were negatively impacted by semi-socialistic welfare policies in the New Deal, it may be the case that these glimmers of hope for liberty will be something that puts a nail in the coffin of a more actively free society. Gab and alt tech could truly free everyone from tech tyranny, but the compromises that Musk brings to the table might actually result in everyone being convinced Twitter is free because Trump-tier nationalists can more freely spout Qanon type material unless it’s overtly racist.
