oday we will have Profound Thought. Actually it’s the only kind we ever have in this corner of the internet. Thunderous insight. Volcanic perceptiveness. That sort of thing.
Anyway, some slightly addled questions about robots, and sexbots and their relations with people and how smart they are or aren’t. For example, can you love a robot? I mean with actual affection, such as one might have for a good dog? Or–larger question–how much emotional involvement is possible with machines, and how much is a good idea?
Yeah, I know, this sounds silly. But we really are moving toward a world in which the inanimate and the human aren’t all that distinct. Bear with me.
Little girls seem genuinely attached to their dolls, and a boy of fifteen can become romantically involved with anything concave that can’t run faster than he can. But with the advent of sex robots and increasingly human software–Siri, for example–how far can this go?
I have read of bordellos staffed by silicone doxies that are said to attract a considerable clientele. To me an air mattress has more sex appeal, but maybe I am not up with the times. Every few weeks a story appears saying that poke-bots have become more realistic. Some try to be conversational. Join the Rubber Maid Lonely Hearts Club.
There are even male sexots. These must be for homosexuals. Women have better sense. I think.
So, OK, they look like women, but when they talk they sound braindead. You could never mistake one for a living, breathing gal. Except these days maybe you can.
Thanks to movies, we expect robots to sound like robots, at least a little bit. But they don’t have to. Siri sounds entirely human. She even has a sense of humor.
Then, one might wonder, how intelligent might these plastic love interests be? In a sexbot this might not be the essential question, but we will consider it anyway.
Now, Turing. (This is actually going somewhere. patience.) Alan Turing was an early and talented computer wonk who famously devised the “Turing Test” to determine whether a computer was genuinely intelligent. Said Turing approximately, put the computer in one room and a human in another and connect them with a telephone. The human chats with the computer: “Hey, homey, how ‘bout them Redskins?” “Whatcha doing Saturday, catch a couple of brewskis?” And so on. If the human thinks he is talking to another human, then the thing is intelligent. Can today’s machines pass for human?
It depends on the human the computer is supposed to be and how exhaustive the interrogation. I will bet that a five-year-old could today be done well enough in software that if he, or she, or it answered your telephone call, you would not suspect. A six-year-old? Seven?
”Chatbots” now exist that can talk intelligently about narrow subjects, such as how to replace your credit card.
So put a Siri receiver in a doll and, if it were programmed to talk like a small kid, I bet a three-year-old girl would chat with her for hours, becoming unable to distinguish emotionally between the doll and a human. Why don’t I think this is a good idea? It’s kind of eerie.
Now we come to artificial intelligence, which recently has gotten screwy. AI now uses neural networks that imitate the human brain. I read about them decades ago in a book by a girl I knew who worked for Hecht-Nielsen Neurocomputers. I didn’t think neural nets would ever amount to much. This showed that I wasn’t the most radioactive isotope in the periodic table, because they are now a Big Deal.
See, with normal programming you start with, say, A equals pi-r-squared, and then you get lots of radii and calculate areas. In AI, you start with a million areas and calculate the formula. It’s like starting with answers to get the question.
But if you have the answers, why do you need the questions? Maybe they got the idea from Jeopardy. Anyway, I think it is wrongheaded, bass-ackward, and probably against God. But it works.
If you like technoglop, this is neat stuff. Lots of partial derivatives and learning rates and sinusoidal functions and stochastic gradient descent to avoid local minima of error surfaces, which are like energy wells in physics but instead are information wells, which is weird. With this stuff and a little practice, you could bore whole cocktail parties into mass suicide, like Jim Jones. Probably a good idea.
Anyway, this kind of AI learns the way babies do. Tell the baby a million things in spoken English. It doesn’t know what the question is, but eventually notices that if it says one thing, mommy does this, and if it says another thing, mommy does that. This equips it to become a minor tyrant.
The point I was creeping up on, and hoping to take unawares in a savage pounce: Technology is producing, in bits and pieces, more and more of things we thought only humans could do.
It gets worse. I suppose that by now we all know that IBM’s computer Deep Blue beat the world chess champion and its later machine, Watson, beat the national Jeopardy champion. But to salve our pride, we humans can say that these boxes didn’t really, exactly beat humans. the programmers of Deep Blue, see, put the tactics and strategy of chess in, and Deep Blue only did what people figured out long ago. We just automated ourselves.
But here is something spooky. There is an Oriental board game called Go, universally regarded as harder than chess. (The foregoing sentence contains everything I know about it.)
The folks at Deep Mind/Google wrote an AI program called AlphaGo Zero that started with only the rules of Go. No tactics, openings, strategy. Nothing. It played with itself (See? Getting more human all the time.), taking both sides, for thousands and thousands of games. Hour after hour. Day after day. For forty days. On a wicked fast computer. It is a phenomenally inefficient way to learn Go. Or anything. But it ended by beating the world Go champion.
Sez me, this is something new under the sun, a machine that all by itself learned to do something exceedingly difficult with no help from us.
We are not, it seems, alone.

My wife has Siri on her phone, but she will not answer me anymore after I asked her what was apparently too tough a question: “Siri, can you show me your tits?” Actually, neither of them will answer me right now…

Presumably, poorer men who are more likely to use prostitutes won’t be able to afford a sexbot.
But what will happen to so many poor women who have no choice but to work as a prostitute in a brothel? Its a job. Millions of women under 50 pay rent with it. Prostitution employs about 10% of the female population in the Western World.
Post-communist Eastern European and Russia depend upon remissions from young women sending money back from Dubai as hookers. Their economy would collapse. So would Southeast Asia.
We can all agree that human trafficking is terrible and nobody should pimp other people. But what about young women who engage in prostitution for no other option?
Female crime in the US inner-cities will rise catastrophically. Half the ghetto economy revolves around men paying hookers.
Drug crimes will skyrocket. Ending Human Prostitution
Women’s prisons swell up with genuinely anti-social dull women who are too bad-tempered to hold menial jobs and have no recourse but selling sex.

Deep faking video is another strange place. You can put someone’s head on another person’s body and make it do or say whatever you want completely realistically. Or you can make the person do or say whatever you want using their own body.
Holograms of dead musicians are now used in live band performances. They use live models videotaped in a studio as the armature and a computer can later project the hologram realistically. Although there is an unnatural brightness, that will probably be eliminated some day soon.
People who have a hard time separating art from life may have a tough going in the future. Reality will have a quality similar to the ancient’s belief that gods inhabit rivers, sacred groves, chimeras, people, animals, etc. But the underlying reality won’t be based on nature and hardwired sensibilities reacting to nature and divine order. The underlying reality will be man-made and subject to inherent human flaws and desires.
Fred makes a very basic mistake. He refers to artificial intelligence as a discrete object. Humans are discrete objects, but all AI is connected. So you couldn’t say that a Barbie Doll is equipped with AI. You can only say that the doll is a portal. And since that portal leads to an unknown destination, only a fool of a parent would expose his daughter to that kind of risk.

I would say, yes, depending on the individual and the situation. How much emotional involvement do people have and have had with their cars, electronic devices, etc?
In 1959, there was was an episode on The Twilight Zone, “The Lonely”, that addressed the relationship between a man and a machine. Sixty years later the same question is being asked under different circumstances.
As another anon commented, love it or hate it, it’s here. Who knows, maybe the “machines” will be more empathetic and beneficial to humans than humans are to each other. And if they aren’t, who will be to blame?

People make the mistake of thinking that sexbots would have to be pretty realistic to have any appeal. In fact they would only need to be moderately realistic.
Sex with a sexbot doesn’t have to be as good as sex with a woman. It only needs to be better than masturbating to porn. And an emotional relationship with a sexbot doesn’t need to be anywhere near as good as an emotional relationship with a woman. It only needs to be better than an emotional relationship with a dog.
And Fred is seriously underestimating the potential appeal to women. Sex with a sexbot doesn’t have to be as satisfying as sex with a man. It only needs to be more satisfying than sex with a vibrator. And an emotional relationship with a sexbot doesn’t need to be anywhere near as good as an emotional relationship with a man. It only needs to be better than an emotional relationship with a cat.
These are not terribly difficult objectives to achieve.
Also, it may be an advantage for a sexbot to be less intelligent and less emotionally complex than a man or a woman. People like having emotional relationships with pets. A sexbot that is midway between a dog and a human being in intelligence and emotional complexity might be preferable to many people. Such a sexbot might not be able to discuss theology or the philosophical implications of the latest advances in cosmology but she might well be very loyal and very affectionate That’s why people like dogs. They’re loyal and affectionate. Imagine the same loyalty and affection but combined with a fairly realistic human-like body and fully functional genitals. A lot of men, and women, might well say – what’s not to like?
That’s less than the price of a good used car. And presumably with much lower running costs.
Most importantly, she’s probably much more environmentally friendly than a used car. So if you buy Tracy instead of that used Chevy you’re helping to save the planet.
It would seem that sexbots off the best of feminity absent feminism.

I find this sex technophilia unnatural and bizarre like zoophilia and ban it. I see some think it’s just an advanced form of sex aid, like a vibrator, but I think it’s sick. All humans should be treated with dignity and respect. It’s very sad that in poverty stricken countries like the Philippines daughters are forced to sell their bodies to survive. When I was in the Army and stationed in Asia, prostitution, was legal, and, in fact, several of the bar girls in the ville near where I was stationed married American soldiers. Poverty does very bad things to people.

AlphaGoZero was still programmed to execute algorithms they were just different from simply loading strategies, but there is no proof that this “AI” possesses, sentience, self-awareness or volition. It still did exactly what it was programmed to do and nothing more beyond that.
A demonstration that these characteristics are present in a genuine artificial intelligence would involve building a computer that can do something of its own volition.
For example, you build a computer, equipping it with means of communicating with the outside work, cameras, microphones, speakers, connections to the internet that provide it access to the world’s information, entertainment, news, history, in short all the things we can access as humans.
You then do nothing except power the computer on and sit back. A genuinely sentient, human-like computer would do things on its own such as in the case of playing Go, it comes across the game of Go, finds it interesting and learns how to play without being programmed to do so. Or it starts writing poetry, or composing music, or inventing medical treatments, or planning assassinations, or arguing political issues, or watching porn or cat videos, or whatever.
In the movie Ex Machina, the AI proved to her creator that she was a genuinely sentient being like humans are by doing something he never programmed her to do, (spoiler alert):
She planned and carried out his murder and escaped from the laboratory.

Is that really true? I’d have thought that female sexbots would be interacting almost entirely with men, and would therefore be learning the types of behaviours that men like. True enough, but in that case would you actually want a genuinely sentient sexbot? I’d have thought the whole point of a sexbot is that it does what it’s programmed to do. You don’t want her to suddenly go off trekking to Nepal to find herself. You want her to keep making you sammiches, keep telling you that you’re the most special guy in the world, and keeping having sex with you.
What you want is an AI sophisticated enough to simulate human behaviour just realistically enough that you can just about convince yourself that she really wants to make sandwiches, that she really thinks you’re the most special guy in the world, and she really wants to have sex with you. And since those are things that you really want to believe, it’s probably an achievable objective.
Maybe feminists, noticing how HAPPY the men are with nice, artificially programmed bot-women, will demand AI learning-interaction with real-world, difficult, cuntish women that are more the norm today and worse in the future. In other words, to feminists, your bot must be as much a cunt as the average chick off the street and the AI learning chick-bots will be able to or already can learn things. Why not to be a cunt, right? Driven in that direction, that way, you might as well have a woman off the street as a ten thousand dollar version of some cunt off the street. When you get tired of the human, flesh and blood broad you met on the street, at least she goes away. When you get tired of your cuntish sex-bot, you have to store her somewhere. Then, if the next sex-bot AI learning bot-chick finds the old robot, does she ask questions about the one before her? See how many directions it all flows out to? All directions point to cunt. I’m still not sure how the lady sexbots are going to have any interactions with women. Unless they’re programmed to enjoy shopping. Apart from that they’re unlikely to have any opportunities to mix with women. And presumably they’re going to be programmed to crave male attention whilst being indifferent to actual women.
Will feminists be able to coerce the manufacturers to program the sexbots to be nasty and unpleasant? In which case I imagine the solution will be to buy an imported Chinese sexbot which will be programmed to be really sweet and to enjoy making sandwiches and having sex (not necessarily at the same time). Good luck persuading the Chinese (and the Japanese for that matter) manufacturers to cut their own throats financially.
AlphaGoZero had to be programmed with more than the rules of GO. It had to be programmed with an aim of ‘winning’, or it would just play with itself aimlessly. I think to suggest that just the rules of the game were input is a misrepresentation of what the AI designers accomplished. And of course the AI had no idea of WHAT it was doing. Perhaps quantum computing will do a better job of creating (or hosting) a machine consciousness, and God help us.
The fun will start when you can download apps for your sexbot. Most whites only perceive white men as being capable of sexual exploitation. Two, all Go stones are the same. Chess pieces are of several different types with different powers of movement. The interesting thing is how long it took programmers to analyze, program, and conquer Chess compared to how long it took to completely dominate Go. As a matter of fact, Chinese Chess, a similar, probably more like the original version of Chess from India, is still human dominated. But that probably won’t last long.

AlphaGo? AlphaZero has done similarly for chess – a neural net beginning with nothing but the rules of the game, and left to play a few million times against itself until it starts to work out a strategy. At that point it became capable of trouncing conventional chess engines – themselves far too strong for any human – and playing moves along the way that moved expert commentators to awestruck silence.
That said, cracking Go was amazing; while chess has been incrementally conquered since the 1970s (when any old Master, never mind GM, could comfortably beat a computer in a match) until now (when no mere human being need even bother turning up), non-neural-net approaches to Go were nowhere near up to the challenge. This is possibly because most humans, including programmers, haven’t the first idea how Go actually works… and I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that AlphaGo’s approach looks just as inscrutable as AlphaZero’s. But I don’t understand the first thing about Go anyway.
Well, Chinese chess is very different to chaturanga, shatranj, or early European chess (before the queen and bishops acquired their modern powers), what with a river halfway across the board, pieces restricted to the citadel, a completely new kind of piece (the cannon, which moves Rook-wise but must jump over an intervening piece of either colour when, and only when, making a capture) the “facing Kings” rule and the fact that pawns neither capture diagonally nor promote. But if an Alpha-type neural net hasn’t cracked xiangqi yet, it’s because it hasn’t been told to. The game is roughly comparable to chess in complexity and all the neural net needs to do is to be given the rules and then told off to play itself. That’s not difficult given that it’s been done already with chess.
Though Go stones don’t move, the board is large and the number of possible moves at each turn is enormous (you can put a stone on any unoccupied intersection you like, as I understand it) – and an apparently purposeless move to a random-seeming point can be in accordance with a deep strategic end. Or so I’m led to believe. The point is that this leads to immense complexity despite the apparent simplicity of the game. Previous programming attempts had not managed to create a strong Go program, but Alpha leapfrogged all competition with startling rapidity.
