The air shrieks, and life stops. First, from far away, comes a high whine like angry insects swarming, and then a trampling, like a herd moving through. The kids on their bikes who pass by the Caltrain crossing are eager to get home from school, but they know the drill. Brake. Wait for the train to pass. Five cars, double-decker, tearing past at 50 miles an hour. Too fast to see the faces of the Silicon Valley commuters on board, only a long silver thing with black teeth. A Caltrain coming into a station slows, invites you in. But a Caltrain at a crossing registers more like an ambulance, warning you fiercely out of its way.
The kids wait until the passing train forces a gust you can feel on your skin. The alarms ring and the red lights flash for a few seconds more, just in case. Then the gate lifts up, signaling that it’s safe to cross. All at once life revives: a rush of bikes, skateboards, helmets, backpacks, basketball shorts, boisterous conversation. “Ew, how old is that gum?” “The quiz is next week, dipshit.” On the road, a minivan makes a left a little too fast—nothing ominous, just a mom late for pickup. The air is again still, like it usually is in spring in Palo Alto. A woodpecker does its work nearby. A bee goes in search of jasmine, stinging no one.
In many parts of town, you can hear the warning of a passing train just about everywhere: the quad at Palo Alto High School; the tables at Piazza’s grocery store, where kids from Gunn High School hang out after school; the kids’ bedrooms after midnight.
A Few students had gotten in early to take some photos dressed as Scooby-Doo characters, part of an annual volleyball-team tradition. Now one of them, Alyssa See-Tho, was waiting outside the choir room for first period to start. Slowly, classmates began to join her. Through the windows, they could spy the teachers packed in there. In the other classrooms of Henry M. Gunn High School, about 1,900 kids waited. After a few minutes the teachers filed out, each holding a sheet of paper, none talking. Alyssa took her seat inside. It was November 4, 2014, a few days after homecoming and maybe a month before college applications would start making everyone crazy. The teacher read a statement containing the words took his own life last night, and then a name, Cameron Lee. Alyssa’s first thought: Is there another Cameron Lee at our school?, because the one she knew was popular and athletic and seemingly unbothered by schoolwork, an avid practitioner of the annoying prank of turning people’s backpacks inside out.

As soon as I saw Hannah Rosin (author of “The End of Men” and other hateful feminist screeds and “reads”) embedded in the article I smelled a mis-representing rat as are most articles in The Atlantic. Get something straight right now. The girls attempt suicide, the boys succeed. The red herring in The Atlantic in this piece as in all others of this type is wealth vs poor outcomes of children when this piece ought to be an examination of the gender-based treatment of girls against boys, women vs men, even women vs. sons when it comes to divorce, most initiated by women, no-fault style. Their lives stripped of all male role models in primary-school life through feminist preference in education and of course, back home via divorce and single motherhood, boys in school and men in college and the workplace labor under the harsh reality projected by women that boys and men are no good. By teachers, the culture, social justice, the news, school admin and policy. It’s a war on boys in school as well as on men outside. It’s the boys constantly piled onto with speech codes, psychotropic drugs, pressure for success, expectations wildly exceeding those applied to the girls.
It’s the boys, raised in a harsh, feminist school environment (half or more of them without their fathers owing to 72% of the divorcing mothers opting for a no-fault divorce) that are getting away, doing themselves in, even the ones in whom you never even see it coming. Lastly, it’s the boys, many who take it to heart at some point, that are told their entire lives they’re racist, they’re rape culture, they’re lesser than the girls. The trend continues through high school and the effect is trebled throughout college on out into the reality that is present-day feminist privilege and preference in the workplace, academia, government and corporate human resources departments. Even Hannah Rosin doesn’t deny it in her books, but don’t look for the truth from her in the Atlantic and New Yorker and New York Times.
No, no, no, Hannah Rosin, it isn’t rich vs. poor, it’s the feminist-based and preferred world of women against boys and men from pre-K on out to adulthood and beyond and many boys do not make it. Girls cut themselves, girls take pills, but it is boys and men who, for much more tangible reasons, succeed. The boys are ground down and there is no one around to toughen them up a little and the ladies are damned unlike to do that even if they knew where to start.
Interesting as always, but always predictable that the Hannah Rosins of the world muddy the waters on this subject in spite of all the evidence she has explained herself in her books, The End of Men being a primary example. It isn’t the drive of expectations. In most of these situations, the boys and men were, self-intent aside and simply put, nagged to death.
Here’s the latest list of the names of all the National Merit Scholars in California by high school:
http://www.mercurynews.com/education/ci_28780350/list-california-national-merit-scholar-semifinalists-2015-2016
Gunn H.S. in Palo Alto, the subject of the article, has 46 putting in the top few in California.
I haven’t had time to read the entire Rosin piece, but a CTRL-F showed zero instances of the words “Faith” or “Religion” or “Church”. Yet Rosin is mystified about why privileged teens would kill themselves? I would think this would at least be a line of inquiry to investigate.
Just look at this:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/transgender-man-opens-shocking-pregnancy-article-1.2435731
Never mind teen suicides.
Looks like US is committing cultural and moral suicide.
I mean….. LOL… just look at the dude.
It’s the image of modern ‘progressivism’.
I’m surprised more people aren’t offing themselves.
Well, I was wrong, there is one reference to the word “religious” but of course it comes in a section where the author writes about bad parenting style
I was also struck by this quote from a young lady who had attempted suicide as a cry for help.
That seems to be the problem – kids and parents thinking that they can get their child into Harvard if they just try HARD enough. After all, according to Steve Jobs you can change everything around you that you call life.
I’m actually curious on an HBD perspective of the male/female suicide gap. Your argument, which is a common one, and one I feel inclined to agree with, says it’s an environmentally nurtured effect.
But it’s the same kind of argument ridiculed by HBD proponents when it’s used to explain the academic failures of black students or the lack of women who make it as programmers or whatever.
The most hardline HBD proponents say that genetics is the principal cause for all human behavior.
Do we have data on the male/female suicide stats in say, Pakistan, or any other societies that actually are misogynistic and patriarchal?
Absolutely correct. Feminism has turned into a hatred and persecution of men, and girls are increasingly being trained to consider boys as a blot on humanity and a useless burden on the earth. Lesbianism is the way of liberation from men.
Let the men then marry other men, and all will be well. In such arrangements, the women will do well for themselves, while the men will cope less and less well, and eventually dwindle to the sub-human status they deserve…
Ayn Rand put it bluntly: she castigates those who claim that seeking legal endorsement for same sex marriage is about freedom, whereas the true aim is the destruction of the family as the surest means of achieving “freedom.” It seems that the road to freedom passes through the demeaning of boys and men.
“The End of Men” is indeed near – i.e., the end of the family, and hence the end of human civilisation.
Charismatic CEOs are the new gods.
Yes we do. India is probably the most famous one. I’ve never seen any data anywhere with lower female suicide rates.
Hannah Rosin and “The End of Men?” What in blazes is she writing about? If she is referencing the end of the feminized secular humanist men who pretend to preside over the United States and Western Europe, she is correct. If she is referencing the certain demise of herself, her sisters, and what few daughters and granddaughters they produce, she is also correct.
Men, which is to say genuine unadulterated men are pouring out of the Middle East, Africa and Central America by the millions. Within twenty years they will have inundated every last gated community, from Berlin to London to Boston to Marin County, California. Well before that happens Rosin’s offspring will have felt the lash of man as their grandmothers, great and ever-so-great grandmothers never knew. They will be forced to shut up, listen, cook whatever their man demands, be denied the right to own businesses, vote, exercise political power, decide how many children to have, and subjected to operations that may deny them the right to enjoy sex. Finally, Heaven forbid, their driving and shopping rights will likely be curtailed.
To learn how feminized men aided Hannah Rosin and her cronies in bringing about “The End of Women” look no further than “The Tinder Box: How Politically Correct Ideology Destroyed the U.S. Forest,” Christopher Burchfield. The book presents what turned out to be the grand blue print that led to the demise of that institution, a death that slightly predated the ruin of every other government and cultural institution in the West. Over the last forty years, our secularly humanized, environmentally sound men and women have laid out a broad welcoming plank for the hordes of deprived black and brown skinned men of the world. Vendetta, thanks for your reply,
Understand, my observations of higher suicide rates are anecdotal, yet derived from statistics at Centers for Disease Control, NIH, FBI reports, etc. General, but accurate statistically-backed perceptions, if you will. I consider these to be environmental factors, the economy and really, artificially-created factors set up by feminism. Take the treatment of boys/men vs. girls and women at every stage of life for example. Raising my daughter through primary and higher education I can tell you that every whim, every sensitivity, every need of girls and women of today is attended to with the utmost care from cradle to grave.
Understand also, my perspective is of white women and white men given MY environment and experience. The races have their own problems, mostly involving IQ, aggression and other factors that reduce their standing everywhere in the world, factors that create their environment. Blacks have been extended every advantage the past 50 years and from where I sit (particularly with Blacks), only their tendency to breed regardless of outcome, their incivility, violence and propensity to murder each other has benefited and advanced. The ruined cities and the rest bear discussion for another day or post, I suppose. The matriarchy and feminism are about about what is good for white and “educated” women in any case.
Environmental factor of greatest effect on my perspective comes from seeing the young boys, under the tutelage of entirely female teaching staff, treated with some disdain and little care, only the brightest and the most athletic boys succeed, the upper 20%, the rest languish. Those upper-caste students are the kids from intact families and the athletes benefit from male role models from sports teams. They toughen the boys up. Boys with no fathers via divorce, no uncles or coaches, languish. They become, most, gamers in the basement, as it were. Slackers. They’re out there by the millions.
This is a factored environment, created largely by women, there s no arguing the environment. Now I love women, but one-on-one, and in groups of two and three, they laugh at the system that has been set up in the workplace and colleges, my daughter and various girlfriends admit openly that there is no patriarchy; it is now an open and hostile (to men) matriarchy. That matriarchy dole out 70% of te degrees to women at university (ok, ok, most are dopey “studies” degrees to draw in women and tuition that never should have GONE to college, but still). That matriarchy puts the boys on drugs in lower school, the boys tread a fine line at college and what awaits them in the workplace? Sensitivity/Sexual behavior training and they arethe “victims” of female preferences if they can even find a job, assuming a lack of serious STEM credentials. These are issues and factors that are unassailable and I believe the disdain and disrespect shown the majority of men in this society, this environment if you will, is responsible for higher rates of suicide among men.
As for Pakistan, sorry, my perspective is here in the U.S., actually. Pakistan is an entirely different society with the patriarchy there that has never existed here. Feminism is not a dogma that will ever take there, given the social/religious/political strictures against the female interest under Islam. I can easily imagine women being more suicidal in Pakistan (or any Islamic society) than the men. That having been said, an observer could make the point that suicide isn’t the issue as the men kill the women before the women get the chance to self-immolate. Any question of “honor” is resolved by the death of the woman, whether a daughter, a niece, a wife by the hand of patriarchy in the family. Rape is a solution to many problems between and within families in that world. So I don’t much value the statistics in that particular instance but I doubt anyone there is counting anyway.
These are not simple issues, but I believe they are issues of right and wrong. If the “patriarchy” and racism were wrong, things should have evened out, not to have skewed so far out that the imbalances against men far exceed those that ever existed against women. Honest people may argue against my premise or for the new imbalances and discrimination but it’s all out there to see and surely is a factor in suicide rates.
Good Day!
Parker, good take.
Hannah Rosin is proof positive of the new Matriarchy. How else could a woman with such idiotic ideas and thoughts actually make a living in the real world? And I’m not talking about the physical world, I mean the world constructed by feminism where only such idiocy resides?
Rosin and her slimy ilk should think seriously about who maintains infrastructure, the very infrastructure that enables, protects and defends their ability to project the idiocy that “earns” their daily bread. Need a man like a fish needs a bicycle? Really!
As a commercial electrician and telecom contractor, I am profoundly aware of infrastructure. Professionally, I am untouchable by the matriarchy. I go out of my way to push their hot buttons in day-to-day contact just for fun and when they call my office to complain, they reach me, the owner. That aside, I can tell you, in the Western world of “equal rights”, I see no women in construction, in the manholes, on the rooftops. They aren’t picketing for a job in dangerous jobs, believe me. Women occupy cubicles, they do make work, they run academia, they take up the cushy billets in the military. Hell, the precious single mothers of Naval Air refuse to go to sea anymore, our greatest ships and fleets are giant, pier side office buildings providing jobs with benefits and pensions to tens of thousands of single mothers, unable to deploy. For proof, observe a map of Syria and ask why we attack from Kuwait (thousands of miles) when the Med Coast of Syria is target rich, two hundred miles East if said coast?. Two carriers would do in a month what we’ll never accomplish from Kuwait. Why no carriers in the Mediterranean? They can’t go to sea (nor their escorts and squadrons, 40% female-crewed) anymore because their single mother crews can’t be apart from their children. More evidence of the matriarchy. Women don’t truly work. They collect a paycheck, but work? Forget it.
As for Hannah Rosin? Exactly who is the privileged one? Go ahead, show me where I’m wrong. I’m open to criticism, but not for pointing this out.
Dob, also a good take.
Understand, my world is construction, electrical, the physical world. Right and wrong, black and white, no gray area. I grew up, so to speak, in Naval Air, dancing on flight decks in A-6 Intruder and F-14 Tomcat squadrons. Another area of right and wrong, no exceptions allowed, rules written in blood. And frankly, these are worlds of honor among good men, unpopular with the ladies and a world the women don’t fit into. In these venues, the “honor” women are possessed of is useless.
Therefore, my mind is set, feminism and academia and what they provide that backs up in the collective drain are on my “got no time for” list. Mine is the physical world. Academia and feminism is a soft “intellectual” but not particularly smart world in spite of what they think of themselves. Only in their sheltered world, sheltered from the physical world can they survive. What they do is of no value, it is merely destructive. Looking at history, looking at this day and age, I can only offer that those societies that overlay the absolute accountability of the physical world for the outright laziness and sloth of the feminist, “intellectual” world only lead themselves to decline, decay and ruin. All you have to do is open your eyes and see; the result is right here in these United States. There isn’t much time, that old clock is relentless and it is ticking.
My opinion, your mileage may vary. I now bid adieu.
You didn’t mention it, but cursory inspection indicates more than half have Asian, or South Asian, surnames (and we know from reading the original article that mixed race families with an Asian mother will have ordinary whitebread names.)
This is not surprising and if anything it’s an indictment of tiger parenting, and the expectations that immigrant parents have tended to put on their children.
It’s also not surprising what Rosin’s stance is, I believe she is the mother of boys, so she realizes up close and personal that overscheduling and marathon childhoods guarantee burnout and stunted growth.
Yes, these Asians are colorless drones and grinds though some seem to be into trash culture.
But I suspect that Jews applied similar pressure on wasp families when Jews were studying so hard to take over the elite colleges. Wasp families felt threatened by Jews.
And of course, one has to compete very hard to go neck and neck with Jews who are vastly over-represented in everything, Hollywood, Wall Street, Las Vegas, Silicon Valley, etc.
But if someone wrote an article about how the Jewish culture of competition is burning white kids out, it would be condemned as ‘antisemitic’.
Also, given that blacks are more muscular and faster, one could say white kids are intimidated and burned out by competition with black athletic intensity.
Also, white males feel sexual threat from black males because white girls got jungle fever and because black guys routinely bully and beat up weaker white guys.
But pointing that out would be ‘racist’.
We can never say Jews and blacks have detrimental effect on whites’ mental health or physical well-being.
So, let’s go back to bashing Asians along with Russians and Iranians.
Rosin is Jewish, and Jews love to stoke tensions among diverse gentile groups as part of their divide and rule strategy.
We see it so often.
Jim,
Your experiences as an electrician and telecom contractor dovetail with events that occurred in the U.S. Forest Service. In scores of the outdoor professions women proved unable to perform remotely as well as the men in their outfits: from timber falling to fire fighting to controlled burns to cutting slash to repairing broken machinery to getting lost in the woods, as well as their inability to work in inclement weather. Thus they were rotated into the offices where they replaced older men with many years of experience in the field. Although up in years they still retained much greater strength and stamina than their female replacements. Further, their knowledge was invaluable to the young men working in fire, recreation, timber management and environmental projects. But those guys are long gone, having been replaced by women who know nothing of what goes on beyond their office door.
Thus in the end, this once venerated public agency was unable to escape the ravages of feminism. The overhead expenses are horrifying, while since 1990 our country has lost 115 million acres of land to wildfire. You are indeed fortunate working as you are, not having to deal with females and their multitude of shortcomings outside the environs of a cubicle. Unhappily the U.S. tax payer, the environment, the recreationist and wood working industries do not share your good fortune. Check out the book noted above to find out how bad it can really get.
As a white male child man who has certainly been put in his place by jewish feminists such as Hannah Rosin – I most certainly have to say that I comically suggest that the solution to these problems consists in more government spending on higher education.
A little background: Hanna Rosin points to the wealth in Palo Alto and pressure to succeed. The vast majority of the suicides students went to Gunn High School in Palo Alto–located about 1/2 mile from the train tracks where the suicides seem often to occur, and not at Palo Alto High School–which is right next to the train tracks. The economics of Palo Alto are such that Gunn students come from a part of Palo Alto that isn’t wealthy, although housing costs are high everywhere in the area. The very wealthy send their children to one of many private high schools where suicide more unlikely but the pressure to succeed is every bit as high as at Gunn as reflected in the cost to send a student there.
Emptying the notebook…a journalistic term for puffing up a story. There is not much in here but it tugs at the heartstrings of every middle and upper…type parent whose main job seems to be worrying about their kids.
First, the asian kid Cameron: “….the only anomaly anyone could identify was that Cameron never seemed to sleep. Alex Gil told me that if you were up at 3 a.m. on a Saturday and needed someone…” to call and so on. Depression…obvious.
then that girl who attempted suicide more or less, and lived to tell about it…the only signal thing there was that she was living a life her parents had set up for her. When she quit doing what she did not want to do, and got some much needed rest…she got better.
Other personal stories…and almost no social science here. junk writing.
Depression is almost always organic in nature, or genes to put it bluntly. I know this thru my own family and a lot of reading. Depression, alcoholism and other drug abuse runs in families.
Sure school pressure is bad for kids at this age. Let that wait until they are more or less grown up and then let college present as much pressure as they can handle. At least do that much.
I went to working class high school, wherein the “cherries” were the upper middle or climbing types who never made any trouble…headed for a life vanilla and boredom, with money. I am still certain that is more or less true, having kept track of a few of them. Otoh, not everybody genetically is cut out for more adventure and Personality.
I pranked and rode motorcycles, hot rods, and fell in love and lust (satisfied) with my girl-friend, and married her right out of high school. Because my grades were only so- so, I went to junior college as it was then called (more honestly than Community College…as in What community?)
In short, my high school years were great, fooling around, fighting for rep ( never any weapons and when someone went down, that was the end of the fight. This is Normal for males, but now incurs the wrath of the liberals. It is Dark to fight. We even had boxing at my high school, something positively neanderthal these days ( we wore head gear and boxed with large gloves ).
I had a hard time delivering heavy punches to my friends…but that was just my white surplus altruism. One enemy I delivered thru the ropes…never to forget how sweet is vengeance. The handful of mexers did not scruple to pull their punches. (That handful in Redwood City has now grown to 40% of the town..Luckily, the geeks are starting to drive them out and over to the east bay…Facebook and its pathologies.
Today, the kids are herded, or as in the 60s it was “channeled” into the “multiversity” as the prez of Cal Berkeley, Clark Kerr called it…a then fashionable kind of “pluralism” which basically catered to business, ( not niggers and freaks generally) that lost its luster after the niggers presented themselves aka Black Panthers, Black Revolutionary Army, etc. That was a bit too pluralistic. Of course the pluralistic and Pluralism has come back to haunt us in po-mo nonsense of the last 20 years or so, and Difference most recently in race equality chatter. Difference but still Equal is the double-think of our Times. 1964 was the Free Speech year for Berkeley. Today the niggers and commies and anti-fas scream No Free Speech for Racists, this the penultimate stage of the Revolution, the last stage is Thermidor when the revolutionaries kill one-another off, aided and abetted by White militias, and the army.
So, the upper-middle class kids are subjected to adult norms, which do not accord with the youth brain, or youth sex and youth energy. This is all really a shame, since it does not have to happen. Business and professional expertise can wait a few years for the child to become a relative adult.
parents can also wait…and have some fun with their kids, and, or let their kids have some social fun with people, not the Steve Jobs legacy of automatons diddling their games.
Meanwhile, the multiversity, with its very stupid majors like Communications, what we used to call basket weaving, can be returned to the University, in which genuine universals like what liberal arts used to be, the study of history, basics of science, politics and even art and music, once it is purged of Modernism and all things harmful to Western Civilization, read jewish insanity like free sex, feminism, de-colonialist studies, gender studies, freak sexuality studies….etc.
I don’t know if this kool-aid is slipped to the kids in our high schools, but if it is, here is more poison injected into the minds of children…think holocaust propaganda, which even if it were true, is not appropriate for youngsters. Yes, children need to be protected.
So protection of our kids is the first thing.
As a social animal-kids, school is supposed to accommodate that part of our nature. my guess is that it does relatively well, except for the contamination of social relations by meritocratic worry and compulsions…mostly on the part of parents.
I have seen this up close with neighbors, particularly one neighbor set…chinese and Austrian, who will be lucky if one of their boys does not kill them…he has made threats and has struck his Dad.
nag, nag, nag. and Dad is awol, lost in computer science..
Kids need to be screened for depression, it is that simple , since so depression is a major illness now, whether growing or just more reporting.
My personal angle is that social life is disrupted by the multi-racial ideology of Business and Do=Gooders who want to do well , of course, by doing good…and its consequent race mixing which leads only to trouble, everywhere on the planet, except in Business circles where elites accommodate one-another for the greater good, their paychecks, fattened by the social pathology of Globalism and multiculti. and multi-racy.
A must read is Robert Putnam’s study on Diversity in the US. Every measure of social well being, starting with Trust, is down in diverse “communities” while the every measure of Trust is strong in homogenous areas.
Do the school kids suffer from this too? why not. Kindergartners will hold hands with tots of other races. By about the 5th grade, that is over. By about the 7th grade, it is total self-segregation. Another feature of this dumb article is that race is never mentioned. Race does not exist.
I wonder how much white kids associate with chink kids. The chinks are everywhere now in Silicon Valley. Think Good Thought s about the Chinks.

Are you sure Ayn Rand said that? I didn’t think “gay marriage” was even on the radar screen in her time. She died in 1982. I agree with the sentiment but I don’t think she addressed gay marriage.
Looks like yellows are beginning to crack from pressure too.
http://www.fireandreamitchell.com/2015/11/21/hsu-chien-samurai-sword-apple-store/
Especially terrible is how a Chinese guy appropriated Japanese culture!!!!
Shame!!
@Jason
I agree, Ayn Rand–though keen to pronounce on everything–never said anything about gay marriage. If she said anything about gays at all, I would like to hear about it. Gays only got on the good side of libertarians in the mid-noughts; before that they were politely ignored.
Good posting & comments.
Sex difference in suicide in not new.
Women make far more “attempts” than men.
They use non-lethal methods.
Men kill themselves more often.
We use more lethal methods.
(we are better shots)
