In June 9, 2016, the committee tasked with drafting the new Democratic Party platform held its second day of hearings at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, in the upscale Woodley Park neighborhood of Washington. The platform, which is rewritten every presidential-election year, is meant to express a consensus among Democrats on the major issues of the day. The afternoon session, on “America’s role in the world,” included discussions of platform language on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. At stake was whether Democrats would reaffirm the party’s strongly pro-Israel position or make some concessions to the Palestinians.

Days before the hearing, The Associated Press declared that Hillary Clinton had crossed the threshold of delegates and superdelegates needed to secure the nomination. But Bernie Sanders had not yet conceded. And the Democratic National Committee, which normally chooses the platform-drafting committee, decided in May to allow the two leading candidates to select most of the committee’s 15 members: Sanders was allowed to pick five; Clinton, six; the D.N.C., the remaining four.

The group met in the hotel’s Palladian Ballroom, whose walls are covered in murals depicting Thomas Jefferson’s slave plantation, Monticello. The representatives chosen by Sanders who spoke during the Israel-Palestine hearing were all minorities, including James Zogby, the head of the Arab American Institute and a former senior official on Jesse Jackson’s 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns; the Native American activist Deborah Parker; and Cornel West, the African-American professor and author then teaching at Union Theological Seminary. The representatives selected by Clinton and the D.N.C. who spoke on the issue were all Jewish and included the retired congressman Howard Berman, who is now a lobbyist; Wendy Sherman, a former under secretary of state for political affairs; and Bonnie Schaefer, a Florida philanthropist and Democratic donor, who had made contributions to Clinton.

Sanders and Clinton each assigned one person to deliver expert testimony. Sanders’s expert was Matt Duss, who was then president of the Foundation for Middle East Peace and would go on to become Sanders’s foreign-policy adviser. Clinton’s expert, Robert Wexler, a former seven-term congressman from Florida who is Jewish, was introduced as “an outspoken advocate for the unbreakable bond between the United States and Israel.” Wexler spoke in favor of a two-state solution and argued against including the words “occupation” and “settlements” in the party platform. He also spoke against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (B.D.S.) movement, which seeks to exert economic, moral and political pressure on Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories, grant equal rights to Palestinian citizens of Israel and recognize the right of Palestinian refugees to return. “While some proponents of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement may hope that pressuring Israel will lead to peace, the truth is outside forces will not resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” Wexler said. “Particularly when anti-Semitism is rising throughout the world, Democrats must condemn efforts to isolate and delegitimize Israel.”

    The author is suffering from a lack of historical knowledge. Let me help with a refresher.

    Here is a map of Palestine:

    Palestine (a.k.a. The Palestinian Mandate) was divided into:
    – Muslim Palestine — 77% of the land
    – Jewish Palestine — 23% of the land
    Muslim Palestine is more commonly known as TransJordan or Jordan, just as Jewish Palestine is now known as Israel.

    At most, Jews will have only the 23% of Palestinian land that is Jewish Palestine, not the 78% the author claims.

    Why is 77%+ of Palestinian land not enough for Islam? Why must Islam occupy Judea and Sumaria, thus shrinking the 23% of the land that is Jewish Palestine?

    A much better solution for a lasting peace would help Muslims Return to the 77% of Palestine that is Muslim Palestine. Funding the infrastructure build and compensation to move would be expensive, however ending the ongoing “permanent refugee” crisis seems worth it.

    Palestine was a country and the Palestinian Mandate was a legal document.

    Palestine and Transjordan were separate countries – both were administered under the authority of the Palestinian Mandate.

    What is labeled “Jewish Palestine in this map is actually the Palestinian Mandate. This mandate was part of the illicit spoils of war, which the British and French colonial powers grabbed for themselves at the conclusion of WW I. This division of spoils was condemned even at the time. Some part of the British spoils was supposed to be set aside for Jewish settlements according to the Balfour declaration. (Sort of an unearned Jewish spoils of war within the British spoils.)

    The Balfour Declaration was essentially written by Zionists, who promised support for Britain’s WW I aims if Britain made it official policy. It reads as follows:

    “His Majesty’s government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country. ”

    Leaving aside the absurdity of the notion that Great Britain had the right to dictate the apportionment of a large area of land which was part of another empire – the Ottoman Empire -, usurp the most basic rights of that land’s occupants, and unilaterally decide the fate of its peoples, there are several things worth noting about this declaration, which is in some sense the ultimate legal justification for Israel’s current existence:

    (1) It specifically mentions the establishment in the Palestinian Mandate – not the entire Mandate nor even necessarily a contiguous portion of it – of a “national home” for the Jewish people, not a Jewish ethno-state.

    (2) It very specifically prohibits prejudicing “the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine”.

    So even by the shady standards of the Balfour Declaration the current ethno-state of Israel is illegitimate and an illegal, immoral and essentially genocidal violation of the most basic rights of the original inhabitants.

    What makes all this even more ironic is some genetic history. The Ashkenaz Jews who created Zionist ideology and today’s fascist ethno-state of Israel have only a tenuous historical link to Palestine. They are descended from Jewish males who left Judea two millennia ago, migrated to Europe, and procreated through marriage to European women in Italy. Somewhat later descendants of these hybrid Jews moved north of the Alps and diluted their Palestinian links further with more intermarriage with a new set of local women.

    Meanwhile, many of the Jewish brethren of these Jewish emigrants remained in Palestine, dropped their defunct Temple cult, rejected the Talmudic system that replaced it, and became Christians. Through the viccissitudes of history they changed religious allegiances at least once more. But they stayed in Palestine as autochthonous descendants of the original Jewish inhabitants.

    So ultimately the Zionist enterprise and its product, Israel, are the result of a colonial oppression replacing direct descendants of the original Jewish inhabitants of Judea and Palestine with Europeans having only weak genetic ties with Palestine, ties strained and etiolated by two millennia of voluntary absence.

The Europeans banished the indigenous people out from Jerusalem – that included the first Christians. The amount of ignorance you have is astounding.     The Daily Mail originally reported that Livingstone said during his speech that “‘It’s not antisemitic to hate the Jews of Israel,” but the comment was taken out of context, and Livingstone was in fact quoting what he had been accused of saying.

    Meh.

  16. The article is fairly solid, replete with important facts. Thrall should have avoided describing Monticello as a “slave plantation,” a phrase too loaded for an otherwise good piece.

    But I’m not hip to Sanders as the new savior of Palestinians, particularly since he has a track record of waffling and toeing similar lines to establishment candidates.

    Nobody is permitted to notice that the statement for which Livingstone was originally pilloried, was a bit closer to literal truth than the average Holocaust memoir.

    Livingstone has been consistently, deliberately misquoted as having said that Hitler “supported Zionism“, or that Hitler “was [a] Zionist“.

    As usual, it’s that whole schtick of taking a statement, paraphrasing it in a way that sounds extreme, and then excoriating the person being paraphrased as if they actually said the extreme version.

    What Livingstone actually said was that Hitler “was supporting Zionism” in the sense that the German government had policies that specifically advanced Zionist interests.

    As Jonathan Cook quipped, it’s often said that lending money to a drug addict is effectively “supporting” the continuation of his addiction: that doesn’t mean that your objective is that his addiction continues.

    Hitler’s government was “in complete agreement” with Zionism – even the staunchly anti-Semitic SS…

    • a coin struck to commemorate a 6-month visit by von Mildenstein and an official from the Zionist Federation to Palestine: swastika on one side, Star of David on the other;

    On the Zionist flag: here’s the report from the JTA (Jan 2 1936)

    The Jewish Telegraphic Agency: may or may not be trustworthy as a source generally, but in 1936 they were prepared to acknowledge that the Zionist banner had protected status under Nazi law – which most modern readers would find remarkable.

    And people forget the that “Juden Raus!” was not generally a standalone phrase: the full form was “Juden Raus! Auf Nach Palästina!” (see “Arthur Ruppin and the Production of Pre-Israeli Culture” by Etan Bloom (2011), p335)

    Thanks to the UR for highlighting this article. I’m rather ignorant on the underlying issues and so I found it informative. Seems like a big risk for the Democratic Party, as it continues to get pulled further left by increasingly progressive wing.

  74. The bottom line is Democrats are going to have to pay a price for their lack of fealty with their Jewish money people. It’s either that or look like wimps to their constituency which is getting more fed up with Israel by the year.

    It’s likely unavoidable –though they will try– but probably the better course for the long term. The Republicans will play the ‘Dem’s are anti-Israel’ card and it may work to chop 10% off Jewish vote totals but I very much doubt the GOP could make major impact in the Jewish vote barrier.
