For anyone who sees the world from an East Asian standpoint, recent sex accusations against Britain’s Prince Andrew pack a special punch. Here we have Britain’s long-time Special Representative for International Trade and Investment accused of having sex with an underage girl. Although Andrew has consistently denied the allegations, already by 2011 he was sufficiently embarrassed by mere rumors (before his name was officially mentioned in court documents in Florida) that he resigned his special trade representative job. The girl, identified as Jane Doe #3, was allegedly introduced to him by American fund manager Jeffrey Epstein. A mysterious former Bear Stearns options trader, Epstein was long known for his penchant for the company of underage females. He went on to be convicted on a pedophile charge in 2008 and has been accused of using hidden cameras to blackmail political leaders and other influential people. The geopolitical significance of the story is not diminished by the fact that Epstein once served on the Trilateral Commission, a powerful if secretive globalist organization that, critics allege, is effectively under East Asian control and has worked for decades to neutralize Western efforts to open East Asian markets. Virtually without exception, the commission’s American members are regarded by cognoscenti as East Asian dupes and fakes. One of the many mysteries about Epstein is that, as my colleague Clare O’Connor has pointed out (Jeffrey Epstein: Sex Offender, Yes. Billionaire, No), he is far less wealthy than he likes people to believe — he does not even own the Manhattan house that is regarded as one of his major assets. There are even grounds for doubting whether he is really a serious fund manager. (He has had no known clients in recent years and says he does not accept portfolios of less than $1 billion — a sum so large that even the richest citizens would think twice about entrusting such a character-challenged manager with their money.) What’s Epstein’s real agenda? In the absence of hard facts, we should reserve judgment. But there is a larger point here that is worth noting: Western business and political leaders are far more vulnerable to sexual blackmail than their East Asian counterparts. This is yet another manifestation of a major cultural asymmetry that, in a world of unrestrained globalism, strongly favors the East. The story starts with the fact – is this a surprise? – that East Asian societies do not subscribe to Judeo-Christian values. In practice East Asian males are under virtually no social or legal restraints to be faithful to their wives (a husband’s role in many East Asian marriages seems to be no more than to get home before dawn and bring in a pay check once a month). Hence in part the massive size of the red-light districts in Tokyo, Seoul, and Shanghai. Even pedophiles seem to enjoy carte blanche, provided only they confine their predations to red-light districts (preferably foreign ones in such sex-tourism destinations as Thailand, Cambodia, and India). Now consider what pathetic figures Westerners cut in East Asia. Introduced by friendly local hosts to the fleshpots, many newly arrived Western men have compromised themselves even before they have shaken their jet lag. For Americans in particular, the dangers are acute. Not only are U.S. divorce laws particularly unforgiving, but Americans tend to be exceptionally naïve in nations like Japan and South Korea. While these nations are assumed to play by Queensberry rules (after all they are among America’s closest allies, aren’t they?), their true modus operandi is more like kick-boxing. Not only do Japan and South Korea remain among the world’s most mercantilist nations, but they have consistently proved highly effective in squeezing advanced technology out of America’s few remaining serious manufacturers. As I have noted repeatedly in this space, Boeing has been a particular victim of Japan’s technology transfer program. How big a role has blackmail played in America’s relative decline? Although the problem is essentially unmeasurable, we can make some inferences. Right across the spectrum – from business executives to Washington policymakers to university scholars to foreign correspondents – Americans have noticeably wilted in their efforts on behalf of the American national interest in East Asia in recent years. Of the various factors that are undoubtedly involved, special “personal pressures” may not be the least.
