This is not accurate at all. I live in central Europe, and work heavily with Chinese people and mainland China. The poster says the acceptance rate at Harvard is 1-in-25, and 1-in-1500 at Peking and Tsinghua universities. Accepting those numbers as correct (I assume OP checked them), it doesn’t follow that #2-in-1500 is a “reject”.

Chinese university students I know (or know of from their parents) prefer first to go to a prestigious Chinese school. If they’re unable to do so, they then prefer to go to a foreign (Western) university. Upper middle class Chinese parents, who are footing 100% of the bill for Western education, see Western schools as a mix of opportunity and danger (maybe about equally weighted). The opportunity is new experiences and connections; the danger is falling into drug and alcohol abuse, getting involved in social justice causes and then not fitting in at home, staying permanently after graduation (essentially the family losing the child), coming out as “gay” or “trans” (lots of horror stories among Chinese parents about that), and the like.

Chinese parents that can afford to send their children to American universities have zero interest in being part of “chain migration” or immigrating to America themselves. Being able to afford the expense of Western education for their children means they are already part of the Chinese elite, and it would be a downward move for them.

One interesting fact that I know with fair certainty is true but I’ve never seen mentioned is that among every group of Chinese university students abroad is a Chinese government intelligence officer. No one knows which person it is. They’re usually in their mid to late twenties but can pass for being nineteen or twenty. Their purpose presumably is to identify Chinese students who are being recruited as Western intelligence assets for use after they return home. No Chinese I know – even the students themselves – have any problem with that, and pretty universally see it as necessary.

I lived in a grad dorm at the end of my university time. I became good friends with a couple of guys in my dorm who were ethnic Han from Singapore. Once I took them to a party at my old fraternity house. I ended up losing track of them at the party, and asked them if they had fun the next time I saw them. They told me it was interesting and they had never seen anything like it, and (in a matter-of-fact way) that the person holding a party like that in their hometown would have his hands cut off.
