There is also no mention of the millions of Germans slaughtered or starved to death by the “Allies” during and after the war.

Belief in a religion shouldn’t be a matter of pragmatism. Is it even possible to choose to believe something? You might be able to pretend to believe in a religion, but deep down, belief isn’t a choice.

The main problem with the Abrahamic religions, and with any other religion that worships a “perfect” God, is the existence of evil. The well-known “Problem of Evil” has never been solved, and I don’t believe it can be.

If God is perfectly good, perfectly loving, omniscient, and all-powerful, then how did evil come into existence? How can a perfect God make an imperfect creation?

Was it Lucifer’s free will that allowed him to rebel against God? Maybe. But then why did Lucifer decide to rebel? Was it pride? If so, who gave Lucifer that pride as a character flaw? Who tempted Lucifer to sin?

If free will is so important to God, then after people die and go to heaven, what’s to stop them from sinning in heaven? And why didn’t God simply put that “sin-stopping factor” into place at the beginning of creation?

God, if He exists, has already limited our free will in many ways. We can’t fly by flapping our arms. We don’t have telekinetic powers. Why couldn’t he remove our ability, or at least our proclivity, to sin? He could have even made sin physically painful and unappealing without taking away our ability to choose it, much like we have free will to hit ourselves in the head with a hammer but have no desire to do so.

Ah, but maybe there’s some unknown “higher good” that can only arise due to the existence of evil. Maybe only God understands this “higher good” that comes about from people being tortured, children being raped, animals suffering in nature, and so forth. If that’s the case, then doesn’t that make it wrong for mankind to attempt to stop these and other evils we see in the world? If I see my neighbor about to murder his child, then if God isn’t going to stop it — because God respects my neighbor’s free will and wants a higher good to come from this child’s murder — then shouldn’t I also let the murder happen for the same reasons?

Nope. Free will doesn’t excuse the existence of evil. Neither does some imaginary “higher purpose” for evil. Until I see a satisfactory solution to the Problem of Evil, I’m going to have a very hard time believing in any God of the sort described in the Bible.

All of this aside, I tend to disagree that religions — any of them — are the cause of most of the world’s ills. Clearly they have caused and continue to cause many evils, but what about basic human failings such as greed, selfishness, and cruelty?
