Here’s another story, this one is true. I was giving two of my Chinese colleagues a tour of the rural area where our plant is located, just killing time before our plant tour began. This was their first trip to the USA. They wanted to see a grocery store (the Chinese are obsessed with food). We went to the small town grocery with it’s small selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, small selection of fresh meats, and large selection of canned and processed goods. They were not impressed.

On the way out of the strip mall I saw a gun store. Well, this is something they don’t have in China. So I stopped the car and we got out and went in. The rednecks manning the counter were super friendly, glad to see new faces in that little town, and they showed us around, showed us their stock of handguns, rifles, AKs, the usual gun store stuff.. My Chinese friends were in happy shock. They simply couldn’t believe you could walk into a store and buy a gun.

Right away they wanted to buy a couple of pistols, and probably would have, but I put the kabosh on that one. Our company wasn’t going to be associated with smuggling weapons into the People’s Republic, thanks.

We left the store, and drove around the little town. We saw a couple of houses for sale, modest places but being a small town, the lots were probably 1/2 acre. This was maybe ten years ago, so the prices were in the low $100k range.

My Shanghai friends were again in disbelief. They started peppering me with questions. Could people have their own gardens? And guns? Can they shoot game? Yes, yes, of course, yes.

I was a little surprised. I asked them why these things seemed new to them, this was a typical small town among thousands across the country. What had they been told about America?
