I’m 64 but believe this I would have at least tried to help. If nothing else I would have tried to stop the bleeding and held the poor girl. The only long term answer is employment. The records of that time point out you are wrong-several books have been written on it-the indentured servants were often worked to death before released and many were children-often stolen from Ireland-blacks were definitely considered much more valuable and treated better-

I didn't make that quote but they did have lighter skin. The first settlement was in the 1820s which was when the slaves would have been mixed. Thomas Jefferson was having sex with his mulatto slave then. The early Liberian leaders were disproportionately mulatto and had been selected by Whites. But the class system the Liberians created wasn't purely based on skin. It was based on the language and culture brought by American Blacks. They viewed themselves as separate from and above the natives.

Here's one argument from DiLorenzo's The Real Lincoln, which I find convincing.

As legal scholar James Ostrowski has pointed out, if states have the right to protect themselves by force from federal tyranny, as Madison stated, then surely they would also have the right to do so by means of peaceful secession (Keep in mind that in 1861 no one—especially not Lincoln— was arguing that the federal government was launching an invasion of the South for the purpose of ending slavery.)

Ostrowski presents an ingenious thought experiment that illustrates the absurdity of the notion that Lincoln's suppression of the Southern secession (not the secession itself) was constitutional. In order for such acts to have been agreed upon by the attendees of the constitutional convention, which barely ratified the Constitution as it was, they would have had to have agreed to the following stipulations:

1. No state may ever secede from the Union for any reason.

2. If any state attempts to secede, the federal government shall invade such a state with sufficient military force to suppress the secession

3. The federal government may require all states to raise militias to be used to suppress the seceding state (or states).

4. After suppressing the secession, the federal government may rule by martial law until such time as the state accepts permanent federal supremacy (as occurred during “Reconstruction”).

5. After the secession is suppressed, the federal government may force the states to adopt new state constitutions imposed upon them by federal military authorities (as also occurred during “Reconstruction”).

6. The president may, on his own authority and without consulting any other branch of government, suspend the Bill of Rights and the writ of habeas corpus (as Lincoln did in the first months of his presidency).

This, Ostrowski says, is a fair summary of what Lincoln said the Constitution had to say about secession, and Ostrowski is right. It is inconceivable that such amendments would ever have had the remotest possibility of being adopted by the constitutional convention.

That’s a lie. The 10a A says any power not delegated to the feds no denied to the states is reserved to the states or the people. Since the constitution never speaks of secession, the states had the right to secede.

The federal government was the entity who couldn't do something unless the constitution specifically said it could. All other powers rested in the states.

(Official) slavery in the North ended long before the Lincoln was president.

Slave states like Maryland and Missouri did not join the rebellion and thus were part of the North. They didn't leave the union.

They were given exemptions by Lincoln:

Because it was a military measure, however, the Emancipation Proclamation was limited in many ways. It applied only to states that had seceded from the Union, leaving slavery untouched in the loyal border states. It also expressly exempted parts of the Confederacy that had already come under Union control. Most important, the freedom it promised depended upon Union military victory.
