Here's my take on Middle Eastern and also Latin American politics/leaders.

Always go for the best looking, least hairy leader with a good looking wife. The Shah of Iran, his family and just Iranian society in the 1970s - handsome, good looking, rather White European looking folks dressed in Parisian fashions - not slutty by any means, but not a Black tent burka.

Q: What came after the Shah?

A: Mobs of dark, hairy, foul looking and foul smelling Islamists shouting "Death to America" and the new leader was Ayatollah Khomeni.

I wasted hours and hours trying to talk sense to my Liberal left High School students who always supported anything foreign, "revolutionary", anti American that we were talking about 8th century Islamists - trying to talk sense to Western Libs is usually pointless.

Now, clearly the best looking Middle Eastern leader with the best looking, best dressed wife is....

    Syria's Assad.

Look at this handsome couple - backed by our kinsmen the Russians with all those great looking Russian tennis players - what's not to like?

    https://binged.it/2wr8bvF

Turkish Nationalist hero, leader Kemal Ataturk was another good looking, well groomed Middle Eastern leader and his system of Kemalism - secular nationalism that protects, but also limits religion/Islam - it's a good system that worked then and can work now. One key element in Kemalism is to keep a national army that is ready, willing and able to KILL as in kill dead the worst Communists, Antifa, Marxists. I don't Kemalism had an official position about such plagues as Feminism, but some things don't need to be written down.

Sailer is simply the Ultimus Americanum. A relict of a bygone Californian golden age of genteel grace and good neighborliness. Sailer's affability and lack of contrariness means even those who disagree with him can't find fault with him and he never comes off as irritable or angry in his writing. He is the Mr. Rogers of American conservatism and his ideas of "citizenship/stewardship" are the bedrock of post-war American mainstream ideology (which has failed) that only seem strange today because the 21st century is so pozzed. If this were still the 60's, Sailer would probably be regarded by most as practically a liberal.

Karlin is simply a product, like most of us, of the post Cold War era. An already decadent age where trolling and memes substitute for reasoned discourse and the Elloi host on twitter dictates the caliber of discourse and behavior. I think my manner of thinking is probably 90% similar with Karlin's and I recognize that he sometimes likes to get snarky, which I really enjoy because I mostly agree with him, but I think might really enrage those he disagrees with. I think Karlin is also much more of a radical because his rationality is untempered compared to Sailer. While Sailer notices, his solutions are limited by his niceness and I doubt he nor his distractors believe he is willing to get truly dirty in political fights. Karlin, like you yourself, and me for that matter, see a problem and advocate the most immediate, effective, and expedient solutions. All countries criminalize politicized denials of various sorts and criminalize various forms of crime think. I don't speak or read Croatian but I am sure they use their Croatian laws to gang up on people they disagree with, too, everybody does, except maybe the Czech, and they have other problems.

If I were French, I would vote for a limited holocaust denial law, along the lines of laws against over-repeated slanders and libels (so, for example, I would vote for a law in the USA where you can burn the flag outside, say, the local VFW hall once, but if you do it twice, consciously, that would be a crime --- remember some French were extremely brave during WWII, braver than I would have been, and others were war criminals of the worst kind). If I were Russian, I would vote for a limited Gulag denial law. And so on.

Similarly, if I were North Korean, I would vote for a law criminalizing extreme and slanderous criticism of the United States, a country that has tried so hard to help them. Even here, the "First Amendment" has not been faithfully applied, has it?

I am rooting for Croatia not because of politics but because the French sporting establishment is so corrupt in so many ways, and the Croatians seem to like their fellow Croatians more than the French seem to like their fellow French, at least for now. I hope that what we are seeing these days is an inflection point where people feel greater loyalty to their countries, But it is just a game, after all. And if France wins, so what, there are a lot of good French people who will be happy.

Steve Sailer once again puts the energy extraction cart before the monetary extremist horse:

Indeed, the energy industry’s recent unexpected leaps forward in energy extraction technology, such as fracking, have largely bailed out the American economy.

Monetary extremism from the globalized central banks re-inflated the asset bubbles in stocks, bonds and real estate, and that is the whole ballgame.

The energy extraction boys did get cheap financing for the fracking boom from the globalized central banks, that is true. A lot of oil and gas guys got popped and sold out their equipment cheap when oil prices dropped.

Trumpy is now trying to constrict the global oil supply, to prop up prices, primarily by squeezing Iranian energy resources out of the global market. Israel and Texas and Alaska and North Dakota and New Mexico and other oil states would love to see Iranian oil off the market. The US military should resist the call to prevent Iranian oil from being exported out of Iran on the black market. Oil is shady business. No more war on behalf of Israel in the Middle East.

I'd tell the Indians that if they're not interested in the Su-57, then the technology will be shared with the Chinese. It looks like the Chinese will be ahead of Russia within a couple decades anyway, at least by sharing technology with them their goodwill could be secured. I'm sure the Chinese will be interested in the Su-57, and would be willing to share their railgun or J-20 or whatever technology with Russia.

I think it must be possible to make deals with the Chinese on military tech, or any other tech. At least if we're to believe Karlin's recent links.

Saving is understandable in the case of Japan where you develop your manufacturing to export , this also is the case with China and SK. Russia though does not have open acess to big markets like the EU or the US, so the only way is to consume this manufacturing inside.

There’s also not much need to suppress pro-Russian opinions when such opinions are more fringe than alien abductions

This is objectively wrong. You seem to forget that about 30% of Estonian population are Russian-speaking and the majority of them have quite positive view of Russia. But Estonian media chooses to mostly ignore their opinion.
Even among Estonians the Russian-friendly segment seems to be sizeable around 10-20%. Definitely not fringe minority.
What is happening is that this Russian-friendly position is unexpressable in political scene. There are no Russian national party and for mainstream ones the risk of being labeled "pro-Russian" and loosing Estonian nationalist voters far outweights the risk of alienating minor Russian population. This overflows from politics to other pubic life where public figures have to suppress their possible Russian friendly viewpoints because of the fear of being ostracized by majority.

Lyndon Johnson’s maternal ancestors, the Huffmans, apparently migrated from Germany sometime in the mid-eighteenth century.

Congressman Johnson used legal and sometimes illegal methods to smuggle "hundreds of Jews into Texas, using Galveston as the entry port"

Johnson raised a very “substantial sum for arms for Jewish underground fighters in Palestine"

While serving in the Senate, Johnson blocked the Eisenhower administration’s attempts to apply sanctions against Israel following the 1956 Sinai Campaign

Johnson’s closest advisers were several strong pro-Israel advocates, including Benjamin Cohen and Abe Fortas

The Fortune article doesn't even try to answer the question of its title, since the only explanation provided, that Rubashkin's 27 year sentence was somehow excessive compared to Jeff Skilling's 24 years and Bernie Ebber's 25 years, is trivial on its face. If Fortune wants to argue that Skilling apparently was released in 2017 after serving 11 years, that's a different matter, though of course that difference, this one in Rubashkin's favor , is 27%, versus the original 'excess' sentence of 13% against Rubashkin. It's also worth noting that Ebbers is still in jail after serving 11 years and cannot be released, barring some similar pardon, for another ten years.

Looking for a real explanation, one I might normally be partial to would involve some kind of Rubashkin-Kushner connection or sympathy, but I actually think something different is happening: Rubashkin is presumably unlikely to re-offend on illegal immigration, so his release is a low-cost bone for Trump to throw his enemies, considering how he's slaughtering - heh - them in almost every goal they have for importing a new people. It is certainly possible to take nationalism to the point of insanity, like the WWII Japanese military or their German allies. Seeking, at the minimum, to aid the depraved, communist Kim regime in retaining power in North Korea makes Hideki Tojo look like he was taking all his lithium pills.

There are few ideologies, indignities or foreign peoples I (or any rational person) would not side with in preference to rule by North Korea, even were they my "ethnic and racial kin." That would in fact steel my opposition further, as there'd be no way to "side with" my enslaved co-ethnics other than against their ethnic-traitor enslavers.

And as far as indignities go, hosting (friendly) US military bases is pretty small potatoes; they actually make for pretty good neighbors, as Filipinos discovered after getting what they wished for in Subic Bay. The 'sayanim' are famously volunteer for the most part.

Most of what they do is either legal or not criminal, although I'm sure that they have no problems finding people who will break certain laws for them.

A sayanim (sing. Sayan; Hebrew: helpers, assistants) is a Jew living outside Israel who volunteers to provide assistance to Israel and/or the Israeli Mossad utilising the capacity of their own nationality to procure assistance. This assistance includes facilitating medical care, money, logistics, and even overt intelligence gathering. Estimates put the number of sayanims in the hundreds of thousand.

While not official Mossad agents and sometimes acting without explicit knowledge, they may work in the capacity of unregistered representatives of the government of Israel in their respective nations.

Generally-speaking, these non-Israeli Jewish volunteers are asked to engage in legal activities that will not bring them into trouble with the authorities, such as using Wikipedia to spread propaganda. There are exceptions, however, as for example in the case of Jonathan Pollard, the U.S. Naval intelligence employee who engaged in espionage on behalf of Israel's intelligence agencies and whose exposure by the FBI strained relations between the U.S. and Israel.

Victor Ostrovsky, a former Mossad katsa turned author, wrote extensively about activities of the sayanim, as has Gordon Thomas. According Ostrovsky and Thomas, the sayanim provide assistance of various kinds to Mossad officers operating in foreign countries. This assistance can include facilitating medical care, money, logistics, and even overt intelligence gathering. They can be Judges, Court Clerks, Expert Witnesses, Child Protective Service Workers, Assistant District Attorneys, Police Officers, or anyone with a great degree of power over people's lives, and will do anything at the behest of Mossad case officers (katsa) for the State of Israel against its enemies or those perceived to be unfavorable politically to Israeli policy. ("By Way of Deception", Victor Ostrovsky). Sayanim are supposedly not directly involved in intelligence operations, and are only paid for their expenses.

"You’re saying south and east Mediterranean countries isn’t??"

Somewhat/more or less, I said (see chart for comparisons): (to give a few examples from each region) at about the same range the Mediterranean (Greece at 89 , Italy 89, Malta 91, Spain 92—though there may be reasons to doubt the low scores for Italy and Greece which may be a little underestimated, as may a few of the others; e.g. the very low scores of Guatemala and Nicaragua are especially questionable), some Balkan—though they vary (Serbia 92, Slovakia 87, Romania 82, Hungary 96, Bosnia 95) and some South East Asian countries—though higher than some others (Thailand 96, Vietnam at about 94 according to the old data, Malaysia at 84, Cambodia 84, the Philippines 83, Laos 82, Indonesia 80) and higher than most of the Middle Eastern (Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Jordan 79, Turkey 87, Palestine 75, Israel 90, Kuwait 89, Saudi Arabia 79) Central American/North S. American countries (Mexico 88, Costa Rica 87, Ecuador 73, Colombia 86, Guatemala 58, Nicaragua 54), and somewhat higher than the mixed-race Spanish Caribbean (Puerto Rico 72—though that seems suspiciously low for Puerto Rico—, Dominican republic at 86, Cuba at 83).

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3c4TxciNeJZWUx5bzBWZ1BuMUk/view

"And colored/mixed race south Africans score much higher than pure blood blacks in South Africa."

True (as far as I know, though I'm not certain of the quality of that data), but coloreds were historically favored relative to blacks (by the preceding regime—and I believe the studies I mentioned were conducted soon/not long after the end of apartheid), and tended to be wealthier and enjoy (and be generally permitted) more education and higher living standards, so its not clear how much of the difference is environmental and related to factors such as those.

    "Selected populations??"

I doubt they're really selected. The black populations of both descend from slaves. The Barbadian samples were also even taken from people who had suffered from marasmus and kwashiorkor (or had it when they were children—the Barbadian samples were of course of adults, which have been shown to lower IQ significantly (any selection in the samples if any, would likely be significantly mitigated by that—selection could possibly even be negative as in meaning those in atypically/exceptionally afflicted by disease, though I don't know)

So it seems maybe it’s even possible that healthy Barbadian controls could score a somewhat higher (though I'm uncertain).

Yes, those factors likely do help: I would think (and I think would agree with you) that things like good government, widespread education (which is still much rarer in some other Caribbean Islands), relatively high living standards, and a relatively lower rate of tropical diseases (though they still have a moderate rate of a few of those diseases by first world standards), contributes to the better performances in those countries (and where the conditions are also significantly better than in some other—but likely not all—Caribbean and South and Central American countries (and some Middle Eastern). Also, relatively prosperous (for South America) Argentina and Chile score at 94 and 91 respectively, and Costa Rica—which is largely European in Ancestry, unlike most other central American countries which tend Mestizo-Indian—at 87)

"...with sizable non-black populations namely among elites living there and there, specially Barbados. I’m totally aware about Bahamas demography but seems similar to Barbados."

They are about similar. There are significant non-blacks among the elites it's true, but both countries are about 90% black in their overall populations (the non-black fraction is 10%, and the average inhabitant is primarily African genetically—about 85% (more so than African Americans are, who have more white admixture). The small non-black 10% (a category which also includes, not just the whites, but also some mulattoes—as is enumerated in the Bahamian census I cited in my comment at the link—and East Indians), would not make much difference even if it did score higher than the black majority (which it might do but not necessarily by very much).

The score from the Bahamas is also similar to the result reported below which found an overall IQ of 93 (for my comments on the demographic see comments section) based on a representative sample of secondary (late adolescent) school students.

    http://humanvarieties.org/2013/03/12/hvgiq-the-bahamas/

Also, the Horn Africa countries in the chart of the new Becker study. also score (Eritrea scoring at 69, Ethiopia 66) very low (as low or lower than the other African countries) despite the peoples there having on average about 30-50% caucasian admixture (from ancient Middle Eastern migrations).

Nationalism is simply the love of one’s language, culture, history and heritage, one’s very identity in short,

One can, of course, love one's own speech and people without being a nationalist.

Your definition of nationalism is too broad and not very historical. One can love one's " language, culture, history and heritage" and not be a nationalist. Are tribal people who do these things nationalists? Are there, for example, Yanomano "nationalists" in the Brazilian jungle? Those pre-contact islanders off the coast of India who shoot arrows at planes - nationalists? In more modern times, a thoroughly ideological Bolshevik who likes his Russian language and his class-based mythology about his people's history - nationalist?

Nationalism was a modern liberal idea associated mostly with the empowerment and mobilization of the lower and middle classes, constituting the "nation," worshiping themselves (their speech, history as constructed by their national historians, customs etc. ) above all else and overthrowing the traditional authorities - the Church and the aristocracy.

  • @Grandpa Charlie
I see USA as analogous to the Chinese Empire during its "decline and fall" 1850-1950 (very last part of the Manchu dynasty). Of course, it's a rough analogy, but it's there all the same. Like China back then, the "Court" of the USA like the imperial court of China was willing to sell off anything and everything. It's all been for sale for at least the last 50 years. (If you want an example, take the Panama Canal.)

In that milieu, consider the neocons. What are they unless (like the DNC and the GOP's National Central Committee) but a money-laundering and influence-peddling center. So apply that to the "known known" that the main 'position' of the neocons (their excuse for some kind of principle) is "Russia is dangerous and must be destroyed." As seen in the Saker's article, that is a destructive proposition - destructive of the interests of the USA and its people. So then WHY - why do the neocons pursue that agenda? Well, if you think about the nature of the neocons, of Congress, etc., you realize that the neocons must be making money off of this. They are pushing the anti-Russia agenda because they are paid to do so. Then, ask yourself, as with any money-following effort, CUI BONO? Well. what is accomplished by keeping the heat turned up on Russia? Isn't it that the anti-Russia agenda provides a distraction from what China is doing? And who, almost certainly, has been paying off the neocons for almost 50 years now - ever since Kissinger (godfather of the neocons) took his secret trip to Beijing in 1973. Put it this way: the old China lobby had been providing huge amounts of $US to the entire USA establishment - in particular to political parties and to the media - since way back in WW II. Now there would be a huge hole where the old China lobby had been. Who would fill that? Kissinger, for all his many faults, was smart enough to know, and Chou En-Lai was smart enough to know, what had to be done. And the old China Lobby had long seen the writing on the wall. So the old China Lobby was taken over by the New China Lobby. Lo-and-behold, Kissinger created the neocons where the paleocons had been. (If you want, you can also find evidence of an effective conspiracy extending back into WW II and the 1930's, but that might mean identifying with the old JBS, and I want to stay focused on issues more current.)

That's the basic reality about the neocons. The PRC (or its rulers in the Standing Committee) are the neocons' bread-and-butter. Oh, sure they appreciate the Israel lobby and they need it to keep Congress dumb and afraid ... but their bread-and-butter is the PRC. Or more precisely, the Standing Committee. Americans like to think that we have all the billionaires (or the billionaires have us), but the reality is that USA's politicians, bureaucrats and bankers deal with many billionaires, including the billionaires (active and retired) of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China and the billionaires of the Kim dynasty of the DPRK. These billionaires use their money much more in concert with one another than do most billionaires. So they get what they want. And what they want includes the ability not to be bothered by, e.g., the US Navy when they decide to extend their empire over the SCS and do not want USA's people even to know that Hanoi asks pleadingly to become a port and outpost of the US Navy. Etc. etc.

If you find this hard to believe, google on "Clinton china bribery." Or, here at the Unz Review, check out Peter Lee's 'China Matters' blog story "Four Corners/Fairfax". Just think it over. If your mind has been closed, let it open.

It's all a huge mistake. The foreigners moving to Japan are not making enough. I don't have stats, but I'm looking around and seeing a net drain on social services. And that's saying nothing about the effects on society of having a bunch of foreign self-interested leftists and their mongrels stinking the place up.

There's been a huge increase in Chinese tourism, but as far as I can tell, little interest from Chinese and Koreans in moving to Japan. Maybe for obvious historical reasons.

I do see more Europeans and Americans, including more American blacks. Also, an increase in South Asians. But I caution this is my own observations and not stats.

But I consider Euro and American youth to be stinkers up of the place, bringing in their knee-jerk leftism and calling for cultural changes to make Japan more like USA and EU. Not to mention the demographic issues associated with the ditch hitch glitch.

Correct, the Knowledge does work as a form of IQ test to ensure a better sort of person drives you around rather than someone just off the plane from Lahore. GPS doesn't work well in London though, the rare occasions I have used Uber, booked by friends I was with, they have invariably taken the wrong and slower direct route. A local cabby will be able to, off the top of his head, go the quicker back route. Also using the postcode for location can be quite wrong with the number of small streets clustered in confined areas.

Here is a 2012 paper critical of IQ fat tails:
Does the Normal Curve Accurately Model the Distribution of Intelligence?
    http://www.ncurproceedings.org/ojs/index.php/NCUR2012/article/view/159

Here is a 1963 paper from Cyril Burt which claimed fat tails:
    http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.2044-8317.1963.tb00208.x/abstract
Table 1 gives observed/expected numbers in 5 point bins from 30-160. The low tails were fatter (but they were closer after screening for pathology, etc.).
utu, you might like figure 1 which shows a histogram overlaid on both a normal and type IV distribution. The y scale is logarithmic which I don't recall seeing often for this kind of plot and really helps show the tail effect.

As I have already commented in this thread and is mentioned in that first link, ratio IQs had a fat tail problem as shown in the Terman study. See comments about tail behavior in http://hiqnews.megafoundation.org/Terman_Summary.htm
I suspect that is a big part of the "fat tail mythology." For example, see La Griffe post mentioned above.
Also note comments about tail behavior in other characteristics (e.g. height).
This brief popular level post talks about height: https://www.johndcook.com/blog/2008/07/20/why-heights-are-not-normally-distributed/

As I mentioned earlier, I would like to know what the SMPY/TIP found.

P.S. I would be very interested in what people here more conversant with the literature than I am think about this.

The 2012 paper was equivocal. The ASVAB results showed fat tail for most subtests. The ecles had specially designed math reading tests. And the properties of those are not clear.

    So I don’t know.

But yes it should be an answerable question. And if we are going to use LaGriffe’s method we should figure it out.

    Dear Chuck,

Thanks for your response and analysis! I largely agree with your conclusions (in the linked Chisala post's comments I argue for a similar multifactorial explanation).

Could you share your estimates for the national merit scholarship fat tail estimates, say for thresholds of 3, 4, and 5 SDs? Is the data you are basing that on public? It seems like the TIP/SMPY studies would be a good dataset to try to answer this question since I don't think the current PSAT/SAT/ACT reach above 4SD (and are lucky if they resolve that).

I think it is good to focus on the distributional issues since that is relatively easily measurable. My primary questions are whether the African distributions have fatter tails than those seen in the US/Europe (I think the answer is yes), and if so why (I think the primary answer is smart subpopulations)? How does this sound to you? Regarding La Griffe's coefficients, I believe he used the Terman data. My understanding (hopefully one of the experts here, perhaps you?, can validate/refute this) is that the Terman study used the older ratio IQs (rather than deviation IQs). IIRC the obviously fat tails in that study caused the change in IQ test methodology to make the observed values more closely approximate a Gaussian (thus La Griffe's coefficients don't reflect current IQ tests). I have never seen an analysis of how well that succeeded.

I definitely agree with your 2. My primary question there is how well good environments match up with good potential. I think that is part of what skews the distributions. The follow on (possibly alternative since it is more measurable IMO) question is how closely that maps to identifiable subpopulations (e.g. the Igbo)? My guess (based on little to no data) is that African mean genotypic IQ potential is something like 80-85. Does that sound in the ballpark?

I agree with your 3 as well. Elsewhere I have speculated (based on the stereotypical African extemporaneous verbal skills, possibly also classic hunter gatherer navigation/pattern recognition abilities) that Africans may have a relative advantage (both from genetics and environment) in these additional skills. What do you think of this idea? (I realize my idea overlaps with your statement, question concerns the differences)

Regarding your final paragraph, I agree with the qualitative conclusion, but I am not sure how to interpret the 85 estimate. I would assume the group taking the GMAT is highly selected? Does your 85 estimate correct for that? Is your GMAT data public?

Thanks again for your interesting comment!

    Dear res,

If you wish, you can just shoot me an email.

I don’t comment on the Unz Review much because my “Chuck” handle always gets mixed up with that of another, snarky “Chuck” — which is annoying. (I am many terrible things, but snarky is not one of them.)

    As for this:

“My guess … is that African mean genotypic IQ potential is something like 80-85. Does that sound in the ballpark?”

It is, to me, clearer to speculate in terms of qualitative genetic differences and the phenotypic differences expected owing to these, given some measure with its trait-loading and specific within-group heritabilities, assuming environmental equality.

Based on the ‘totality of the evidence’ — e.g., Davide Piffer’s stuff, published and unpublished adoption analyses, immigrant performance, etc. — I would not anticipate differences, between the said groups, greater than d = 1, given a perfectly reliable index of g which also had within group heritabilities of unity, and also given equality or rearing environments.

So, I really don’t have a problem explaining the scrabble stuff — as surely the heritability and g-loading of scrabble-playing must be lower than that of a math exam, no? As for explaining the very large national differences, I happen to agree with Wade. I noted so in my NofR book, years back:

“This point was made by the prominent early 20th century psychologist William McDougall. In 1920, he noted, “The principle is that, though differences of racial mental qualities are relatively small, so small as to be indistinguishable with certainty in individuals, they are yet of great importance for the life of nations, because they exert throughout many generations a constant bias upon the development of their culture and their institutions” (Lamb, 1999). Ninety-four years later, after discussing a number of societal and civilizational differences in light of human biodiversity, Wade (2014) concluded much the same:“[T]hese minor differences, for the most part invisible in an individual, have major consequences at the level of a society.”

Anyways, this is what seems to be the case to me. And has since 2012.

Looking at the development of the culture and institutions of the high-IQ Western nations, which has resulted in an ongoing process of autogenocide by suppressed reproduction and mass replacement immigration, one sees the huge advantage that low IQ has proved to be for the African nations, whose populations are burgeoning not only in Africa but throughout the suicidal West.

Thanks. Let me know how it goes, and when you get published.

  • Dear res,

The scrabble results are, indeed, an interesting explanandum. That there is a very substantial West African smart fraction is one parsimonious explanans. Nonetheless, the data so far do not compel this explanation. That consideration is relevant when it comes to weighing the “totality of the evidence” with respect to the etiology of group differences.

As for alternatives, there are many given the uncertainties — most generally some combination of the fact that (1) the gaussian assumption probably underestimates to some degree the number of very superior individuals, (2) there are more smart people than one would predict from a mean of 70 because the average West African CA level is, in fact, somewhat variably depressed owing to environmental factors (3) and scrabble ability is not a very good measure of g, being dependent on narrow and broad cognitive abilities with high specificity (e.g., controlled words association, anagram accuracy, name recognition, shape memory, visual perception, letter fluency, etc.) and so is somewhat trainable and it happens that West African train for this.

As for fat tails, La Griffe’s coefficients seem implausible — and don’t match the proportions I get based on e.g., national merit scholarship data. Surprisingly, I was only able to find one paper on the topic and the results were equivocal, so I just don’t know. But, not knowing, I am skeptical about estimates of how many e.g., Gabonese would be expected to have an IQ 4+ SD up assuming typical Western distributions. What does that typical distribution look like after all?

To be clear, I agree with Chanda that scholastic tests underestimate Nigerian functional IQ, probably because they are low stakes exams and schooling is bad. Based on 20 or so years of GMAT data, I get something closer to a mean IQ(GMAT) of 85. So Nigerian Nigerians seem to do better at high stakes tests than one would predict from in-school assessments — but not so better that I would infer no substantial differences between smart fractions.

    If Scrabble requires IQ 130+

This is the “assume a can opener” part of this whole enterprise. Can you be sure of this?

Chisala provided a reference to this paper: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/acp.3059/abstract

The sample of Scrabble experts looked to average in the top few hundred 2011 National Scrabble competitors in the US. As described in the paper:

The average rating for SCRABBLE experts was 1755, equivalent to the 98th percentile of all national SCRABBLE competitors (N = 26, highest rating = 2052, lowest rating = 1520, SD = 168) (Figure 4).

They had average SATs as follows (there is some question as to whether the scores are pre or post 1995 given the subject ages, I assume post which likely understates their IQ):

    Tukey’s honest significant difference analyses showed that self-reported verbal SAT scores for crossword experts (M = 724, SD = 56.50) were significantly higher than for SCRABBLE experts (M = 657, SD = 89.59), p = .005
    ...
Differences between the novice undergraduates (M = 692, SD = 63.38) and both crossword experts and SCRABBLE experts failed to achieve statistical significance. No significant differences existed for quantitative SAT scores between SCRABBLE experts (M = 751, SD = 53.58), crossword experts (M = 737, SD = 81.41), or novice players (M = 736, SD = 62.45).

This gives an average combined SAT for the Scrabble experts of 1408. Per this site that corresponds to an IQ of 138 (post-1995 SAT): http://www.iqcomparisonsite.com/SATIQ.aspx
(as an aside, I think the lower SDs for crossword/Scrabble verbal/quantitative score add support to the conclusion drawn from the means about relative quantitative/verbal importance)

I don't think there is a hard IQ threshold of 130 for Scrabble excellence based on this, but the importance of high IQ seems clear. Especially when remembering how few people there are out at the tails. It seems reasonable to speculate that the IQ numbers for the top 100 in the world would be similar or even higher.

I agree with the idea that other forms of achievement are more important societally, and I think Dr. Thompson does a good job of making the case that chess may be a better example to use.

However, I think it is hard to argue with the overall idea behind this Scrabble methodology as a test of IQ numbers. IMHO there is something interesting going on with the African Scrabble success relative to the quoted country IQs. For more detail see some of my 38 (!) comments on the linked Chisala post.

    Res,

You must admit, though, that the issue is not straightforward for the following reasons:

    (1) While some studies show that self-selected North American scrabble experts — these are, mind you, people who respond to requests for interviews, not random samples — typically have high IQs, this mean effect doesn’t establish:
    (a) That the mean of the general North American population of experts is high. (Though based on career profiles this seems to be the case.)
    (b) That the mean of the global population of experts is high. (This is at least less certain than the point above.)
    (c) That general intelligence is an important — let alone necessary — determinant of expert scrabble ability, as it could just be that high general intelligence people happen to have extra time on their hands to play scrabble or that high general intelligence people happen to have higher specific abilities that are important. (To note, though, I did find two studies that noted non-trivial correlations between IQ and scrabble wins among experts.)

    (2) It is not clear how fat the tail is for general intelligence and yet all these computations are based on the assumption of perfect normality. In contrast, look at figure 1 in La Griffe’s “Assessing the Ashkenazi” (“Griffe’s function”).

Consider the relevance: if we assume an African mean of 70 with SDs of 15, then we are talking about 4+ SDs above the mean, if we also assume scrabbles experts require a IQ of > 130. If the number of high IQ members is inflated > 50x, relative to what a guassian curve would predict, at 4+ SD as argued by La Griffe, the numbers computed by Thompson and Chanda will be more than a little bit off. How much? 5x, 10x, 50x?

    • Replies: @res
    @Chuck

Agreed about 2. I have gone at some length about fat tails in the comments to Chisala's articles (and here, I fear I am starting to sound like a broken record on the topic).

Your points in 1 are good, but I think they only establish my statement as not proven. I still think based on the data at hand it represents the best working hypothesis we have. I welcome concrete alternative ideas though.

Do you think 50x is a realistic estimate of the fat tail at 4 SD? That is more than I would expect. Do you consider the lognormal distribution appropriate or do you suggest something else?

I explained that chess is a better basis for international comparisons because it is non-verbal, has a simple scoring system, and is widely played internationally. Scrabble is verbal, has a more idiosyncratic scoring system, and is not widely played internationally, though there are different language based competitions.

Comparing standard deviations of tests requires standard scaling. The best estimate of the standard deviation of Nigerian IQ as measured by Ravens is about 15 IQ points, with the caution that because the mean is so low there may be restriction of range. It could be higher.

    Replies: @Chuck

    James,

“The best estimate of the standard deviation of Nigerian IQ as measured by Ravens is about 15 IQ points….”

From what I recall, in the UK SPM+ standardization sample the SD was about 7, suggesting that the Nigerian Raven’s SD, despite a possible substantial floor effect, is inflated by 30%. So I am not seeing how you are now deriving a Raven’s SD of about 15. Whatever the case, it would be informative to compare the distributions to see what percent of Nigerians solved as many puzzles as by the UK smart fraction, no?

For Chanda’s point, the distinction between IQ as predictor and real-world-outcomes as criterion is not particularly important. If it turned out that a large chunk of Nigerians were able to solve a lot of Raven’s matrices but did not exhibit great scrabble ability, I am sure he would not scrap his argument, but rather retune it : matrix solving is a better index of functional capacity; for cultural reasons Nigerians just don’t put much effort into scrabble or chess playing.

Generally, from your discussion it is not clear that the Raven’s results are inconsistent with Chanda’s argument — that the Nigerian smart fraction is much larger than a (simple) genetic model for the mean differences would anticipate. Thus it might be worthwile to look at the distribution in detail. Can you ask for a density plot?

which shows a strong right skew for Yoruba polygenic scores suggestive. I would very much like to see density plots for the African IQ studies.

    @Chuck

I think that the authors want to work through their own data at their own pace, but I will certainly try to post comments on their further publications, and a distribution of scores would be very interesting. Also, if they can look at the backgrounds (cultural and ethnic) of the top scorers, that would also be fascinating.

    , @David Becker
    @Chuck

    Dear Chuck,

in the SPM+(GBR)2007 standardization, 6 to 7 raw scores were equated to 15 IQ scores equivalent to 1SD in IQ scores. In the Nigerian sample, a SD in raw scores of around 8.41 (+/-0.85) was estimated. Deviations depent on age-group and weightig for N. Theoretically, 8.41 (or roundet to 8) is equivalent to 20 IQ scores at the British norms, if you set the mean to 100. But Nigeria has a mean of 70 IQ scores. According to the norm tables, 8 to 9 raw scores distance to the equivalent raw score of 70 IQ scores is between 13 and 18 IQ scores difference, in mean +/-15 = 1SD in IQ scores.

    Best, David.

    , @David Becker
    @Chuck

Additional: I made a quick calculation. Paying attention to differences in sample size and mean IQ of Nigerian age groups, the standard deviations in raw scores were on average equivalent to a IQ-difference of ~16.38 from the mean score. Therefore very close to James' 15.

    best, david.

  • Looks somewhat like an own-goal scores to me… Chanda’s argument — or at least a strongman-ing of it — is:

    Grant:
P1. the quantitative genetic variance for trait X is not substantially different in the two groups (e.g., similar assortative mating, similar CovGE, no relevant population structure )
    Grant:
P2. while it is easy to environmentally depress trait x relative to genotype, it is not easy to raise trait x relative to the same (e.g., the threshold hypothesis)

    Then:
Sub-conclusion 1: if two groups, which differ on average in trait X, have proportionate high fractions, it can reasonably be inferred that they have equal genetic means, with unequal phenotypes owing to environmental factors, as there is no good explanation for why the smart fractions would be equivalent.

    Now:
P3. Expert performance at Scrabble is a good indicators or superior IQ, while expert performance at other completions, such as chess, is more ambiguous

P5. The number of expert Scrabble players who are African is commensurate with that who are European

Sub-conclusion 2: Africans have a similar number of individuals with superior IQs as Europeans
MajorC1: African IQ is not genetically depressed relative to European
MajorC2: Measured mean IQ is not really a good indicator of mean African genetic IQ

You valiantly try to undermine SC2, by calling into question P3 and P4. You also spiritedly attempt to undermine MC1, by arguing that P5, granting P3-P4, is mathematically consistent with the measured Nigerian IQ means and SDs… But in doing the latter, in pointing out the extremely skewed distribution, especially for Nigerian males, the whole counter point is undermined…

“the 8.9 points standard deviation of the raw scores translates to an IQ standard deviation of about 16 points below the mean, and 25 points above the mean for males; and 16 points below the mean and 20 points above the mean for females.”

By these numbers, the % of European adolescent males (mean 100, SD 15) > 130 = 2.28% and the % of Nigerian adolescent males (mean 72, SD 25) > 130 = 1.02%, implying a moderate d (smart fraction) = ~ 0.3. It would, of course, be informative to know what the actual Raven’s distribution looked like – e.g., what percent of Nigerian males/females reached Raven’s upper 2.28 (UK norms)? It seems — and please correct me if I am substantially wrong — that you have managed to explain away the bothersome expert Scrabble anomaly in part by showing greatly reduced upper end differences on “as good a test of intelligence” as possible!

CC, of course, will simply take this as evidence of genetic parity (or African superiority), granting his 2 not unreasonable presuppositions (P1, P2).
