I have to be one of the very rare South Koreans who are pro-Chinese. In my opinion, North Korea's Kim Jong Un will never give up his nuclear weapons. If I were he, I wouldn't either. because as soon as he gives up the nukes, he will be a dead meat.

The stationing of the American troops in South Korea and the North Korean possession of nukes is the chicken or egg dilemma. I don't think there is any practical solution for this problem. South Koreans just have to live like this. Unfortunately, that's the solution.

Good point... Of course the Hong Kong movie industry took off when so many people from Shanghai relocated there after the Japanese invasion and then the communists winning the civil war.

I don't have a strong position on this and I'll defer to experts. All things being equal, I'm wont to lean towards the Chinese, but the evidence for that side seems to be scant. The most up to date references and articles still seem to side with Korea, and support for the Chinese side seems to be virtually none except for the couple of citations gleaned from Wikipedia. Maybe there's other evidentiary sources that I don't mention below.

There are 2 Wikipedia pages that discuss movable type:

The footnotes cite Tien/Needham, and Chinese scholars, Pan Jixing and Lan Tai.

In brief, Needham seems to suggest that the Chinese did not have metal movable type until the 15th century (at least not "widely"), although there was earlier unsuccessful attempts.

Pan and Lan seem to argue that China's use of "anti-counterfeit markers" on banknotes in the 12th century at the latest proves China developed metal movable type prior to the Koreans in 1234.

Assuming the contentions are true, the question remains, should anti-counterfeit markers on banknotes count as "metallic movable type printing"? And if the Chinese were able to successfully print with movable metal type, why wasn't it used more broadly?

Pan also alludes to metal movable type used for documents as well, but the point is vague.

Obviously, this is not something I can sort out. Scholars will have to debate.

Was Metal Type Invented in Korea? Chinese scholars say no
So, is metal movable type invented in Korea? In this regard, Chinese experts have different views.
 

First of all, there are earlier records of the invention of metal movable type in China. The early records of metal movable type can be found in the article "Creating Calligraphy with Movable Type" written by Wang Zhen of the Yuan Dynasty. This article was written between 1295 and 1298. It mainly discusses the technology of wooden movable type. It is included at the end of "Nongshu" published in 1313. It is clearly recorded in the book that "In modern times, tin is used to make characters, and iron bars are used to make lines, embedded in helmets, and printed in circles. However, it is difficult to make ink for the above-mentioned characters, and the printing rate is often damaged, so it cannot be used for a long time." It has been done. Some scholars clearly pointed out that Wang Zhen, as an agronomist in the Yuan Dynasty, recorded most of the production and living techniques in the Southern Song Dynasty in his books. The "modern times" indicated in it also refers to the Southern Song Dynasty.

According to Wang Zhen's records, China used metal movable type printing at the latest from the 12th to the 13th century.

On the other hand, Chinese scholars have pointed out through research that Chinese metal movable type has been put into use in the Song and Jin Dynasties. Most banknotes in Song and Jin Dynasties were printed on special paper with copper-cast printing plates. On the pages, there were words such as coin name, denomination, circulation area, printing and distribution organization, printing time, prohibition of forgery and reward for informers, as well as patterns. However, in order to prevent counterfeiting and strengthen the monitoring of banknote printing, in addition to the official seal, each banknote is also given a "Font Size" and "Material Number", numbered in thousand characters, and a secret monogram of printing and issuing agency officials. These parts are not cast on the copper plate at the same time as other contents, but grooves are left on the plate, and the corresponding characters are embedded in it with copper movable type before printing banknotes to form a complete layout. Therefore, Song and Jin banknotes are the product of the combination of copper plate and copper movable type, and copper movable type has also obtained long-term large-scale application with the issuance of banknotes.

In other words, in the second half of the 11th century, the Northern Song Dynasty used copper movable type to print Jiaozi, and material materials since the 12th century have been unearthed one after another, and the Chinese metal movable type technology originated in the 11th century.
 

However, the problem on the origin of metal-type has not well been solved for a long time. This paper proved that metal-type was cast and used for paper money printing in China since the early 12th century, copper-type and tin-type technique was further developed during the 13th to 14th centuries, on the basis of investigation of excavated findings, textual research and scientific judgment.
 

Commenting on the invention of metallic types by Koreans, French scholar Henri-Jean Martin described this as "[extremely similar] to Gutenberg's".
 

Bronze movable type printing was invented in China no later than the 12th century, according to at least 13 material finds in China,[40] in large scale bronze plate printing of paper money and formal official documents issued by Jin (1115–1234) and Southern Song (1127–1279) dynasties with embedded bronze metal types for anti counterfeit markers. Because of its low melting point, tin is a good material for casting movable type in the matrices. In fact, tin was used for that purpose as early as the late 13th century. Wang Chen said:

In more recent times, type has also been made of tine by casting. It is strung on an iron wire, and thus made fast in the columns of the form, inn order to print books with it. But none of this type took rink readily, and it made untidy printing in most cases. For that reason they were not used long.

Thus the reason for rejecting tin for type was its incompatibility with Chinese ink. This deficiency was apparently overcome by the middle of the 19th century, when a fount of tin type was known to have been successfully made by a Mr. Tang in Kuangtung.

Among the chief materisl for modern movable type, lead was never extensively used by traditional Chinese printers. Lu Shen (+1477-1544) vaguely resported that printers in Chhangchow in the early 16th century made movable type in bronze and lead, but this term here may mean an alloy of bronze and lead rather than two separate metal types.
 

In the last few years, several research papers falsely claiming the metal type to be of the Song dynasty origin have been released by Chinese researchers to distort the clarity of Korean historical accomplishments and their contribution to printing history.

You don't have to rehash all this Chinese history for me. I know ALL OF THAT. Korean schools teach a lot of Chinese history. because Korean history is so much intertwined with China, Therefore we have to know about Chinese history.

I think Chinese golden ages are Han, Tang, Song, Ming times and I might add PART of High Qing era ( roughly 1660-1760). Yes, by the early 19th century, China was a mess. But I think another Chinese golden age is coming pretty soon.

Ming government decided to cease Zhang He's voyages because they became too costly in financial terms and instead to concentrate on stopping the resurgent Mongol threats in the north.

But China didn't lose any of it's excellent ship-building technologies. After the" sea- ban" policy of the Ming government was introduced, Chinese maritime traders simply ignored the sea ban policy and kept on overseas trade by bribing Ming officials or moving their operations overseas but still engaged with their homeland, Koxinga and his father are good examples.

Anyway, Ming dynasty was forced to rescind the sea-ban policy due to it's ineffectiveness.

China still produced top quality ships that were technologically far more advanced than European ships.
In shipbuilding technology, Chinese ships were far better made than European ones. For example, Chinese ships had leeboards from around the 8th century but Europe did not have them until the 16th century.

Also Chinese ships had very sophisticated FENESTRATE or BALANCEDED rudder which European ships didn’t deploy until the 19th century.

Since the 2nd century, Chinese ships had very important bulkhead- watertight compartments to prevent ships from sinking but European ships only started deploying them NOT until the LATE 18th century.

Chinese ships had batten sails that were far superior to European square sails.
According to the British NAUTICAL expert, H, Warrington Smyth ( 1867-1943), the Chinese batten sails and ships were among the best in the world.

From the 16th century to the 19th century about 40% 0f the silver mined in the Americas by Europeans ended up in China to pay for such high quality Chinese manufactured goods as porcelain, lacquerware, silk fabrics. processed tea,etc. So this convincingly rebuts the idiotic Eurocentric propaganda that China closed itself to the outside world.

But on the other hand , Europe had no manufactured goods to sell to China.
In the 18th century, China even manufactured European-style mechanical clocks which were as good as British ones but at two third the cost..

In the 17th century China invented bronze- iron composite cannon that became one of the best or if not the best cannons in the world until the coming of the Industrial Revolution, on the other hand Europe couldn’t mass-produce bronze-iron composite cannons due to lack of proper metallurgical technology.

When it came to muskets, for safety reasons, China stayed with matchlock muskets instead of flintlock muskets even though Chinese had no technological problem to manufacture them.

But Chinese matchlock called Jiao Zhi Chong, based on Vietnamese musket was extremely powerful and accurate so that even westerners admired them.

Even though Europe started to develop rifles in the early 17th century, they didn't become reasonably effective until the 19th century.

China already had the technology to melt iron ore to make cast iron in the 5th century B.C.
On the other hand , Europe couldn’t have the technology to melt iron ore to make cast iron until the 14th century. So you can see the time lag is more than 1800 years. Also Britain could produce the same amount of iron only in the 19th century that China had already produced in the 12th century.

China invented the Bessemer Steel Process in the 2nd century B.C. Europe didn’t get it until the 19th century. Germany got the steel process thru the American engineer named William Kelley who hired Chinese steel workers with the knowledge of Bessemer Steel Process.

The Bessemer Steel process was crucial for the industrialization of America and Europe. Also China invented Siemens’ Steel Process in the 5th century but Europe adopted it only in the 19th century.

In textile technology, China invented draw loom in the 4th century B..C. but Europe couldn’t replace it’s primitive vertical loom with draw loom until. the 13th century. British weaving machines such as flying jenny , flying shuttle were copies of preexisting Chinese machines that became the mechanical base for the Industrial Revolution in Europe.

In ceramics technology, China invented stoneware in the 13th century B.C. but Europe got stoneware not until the 17th century and China also invented porcelain in the 1st century A.D, but Europe couldn’t produce porcelain until the 18th century.

So China still had the most powerful LAND forces and the biggest economy in the world and technologically more advance than Europe in 1750 just prior to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

China invented deep-drilling technology for oil and gas. China drilled for natural gas and transferred it through pipelines for heating and lighting starting in the 4th century BC. Europeans and Americans finally got the deep -drilling technology for oil and gas from China in the 19th century.

When it came to agricultural technology, Europe got modern horse collar, moldboard cast iron plow, rotary winnowing fan, MULTI -seed drill technologies and the techniques of row cultivation of crops and intense hoeing by horse-drawn hoes from China.

With the exception of the horse collar which Europe adopted in the 8th century, the rest of the Chinese agricultural technologies were adopted by Europe only in the 18th century.

By using all these Chinese agricultural technologies, British could begin it's own agricultural revolution prior to the Industrial Revolution.

One has to ask one’s self where have all these Kennedy haters come from.

Yeah the triads still exist in HK and Macau. They just have nowhere near the power they did before 1997. They got smart and keep a much lower profile. Seaga was a US puppet. Manley was ahead of his time. Hmm - was unaware of that. Would be very interesting if true. I recall Assad's government made a public plea for China to shut down the Uighurs terrorist pipeline. Ahhhh - I see you know your history. So what is the way forward? I read Yoon's margin of victory is the smallest ever and his approval rating is low.
