  • Decades ago during my years in college and grad school, I had a strong side-interest in Soviet history, and read quite a number of weighty books in that subject. Most of these heavily focused upon the Stalin era, describing the almost unprecedented loss of life that occurred during that period from the combination of executions,...
  • For example, during the first half of the 1930s, the Great Famine caused by forced collectivization and dekulakization was widely described as having caused many, many millions of deaths. Stalin pushed ahead with this project despite the considerable misgivings of some of the other Soviet leaders, most of whom would themselves soon be purged and often shot just a few years later.

And Chairman Mao pushed through the Great Leap Forward despite warnings from the Krushchev administration of the potential disasters of forced collectivization.

Also, while Trump should be criticized for his insane sanctions against India (and China) for purchasing Russian oil, the idea came from Senators Lindsay Graham and Richard Blumenthal who claimed over 70 senators supported this lunacy.

This is embarrassing. After years of monkey drum banging on MSDNC and elsewhere that Trump is Hitler, big brain Ron rolls out "Trump is Stalin."

Ron never applied the Stalin analogy to big gay Obama even though the rhyming began even before Obama took power. He brought psychopath Brennan into his administration after Brennan had stolen Obama's passport records durning the campaign. Nothing odd about that.

Nor that Strange and Sinister screeched during the 2016 campaign that the opposition party's candidate was "unfit." When had that ever happened before. To say nothing of him then ordering Brennan and the other filth to frame Trump and keep him from taking the oath. Everyone seems to have forgotten that Obama tried to get the College of Electors briefed on the Steele Dossier by Brennan.

The list is long and I could go on and on. Obama's Stalinism continued through to the present day. Jut recently we learned that the Obama library is destroying and revising documents from his presidency.

At best it was composite or amalgam of others. It’s now known that Woodward had been in intelligence and had never been a journalist before being involved with Watergate. Good point. Iran keeps "calling its shots" and delivering missiles where it said it would, but the media obfuscates it and it hasn't radically altered Western policy. If Russia delivered a "brushback pitch" and destroyed NATO headquarters, the media might spin it as a monstrous war crime requiring a devastating Western response, and we might be off to the races to WWIII.

Then again, it might be worth taking that risk, since we are already on a slippery slope to nuclear WWIII with no apparent off-ramp. The "brushback pitch" would at least offer the possibility of an off-ramp.

Last year before Iran launched missiles at Israel they first cleared it with the Biden regime, promising to give the Israelis time to clear out of the area so there’d be no casualties.

Afterwards, although I saw reports the Israeli deep state was unnerved by Iran’s display, the media spin among US talk radio’s Israel fanboys was that the missile display was a total bust. After all, they crowed, there were zero Israeli casualties!

  • The Russians could announce their plans for a hypersonic missile strike against the NATO headquarters building in Brussels, Belgium, with the attack scheduled for 12 Noon in three days’ time.

Iran tried a stunt like that last year against Israel and it had no effect on the warmonger Bibi. Likewise Putin’s demonstration would have no effect on the NATO War Pigs.

Iran never proposed attacking and destroying a highly symbolical Israeli target. Part of the problem may be also that there isn't any publicly known Tsahal or Mossad building that would be undeniably recognizable as such by the global population. Last, Iranian missile technology has greatly improved and became world-class, but the Russians are absolute leaders in this.
NATO, on the other hand, has its well-known headquarters in an European capital, which makes any attack against it impossible to hide or even downplay. It would be an absolute catastrophe for NATO. But I highly doubt Russians will ever do this, it is most likely they all of a sudden launch full nuclear attacks against NATO, than performing such a publicity stunt.

Well, count me skeptical. All the pro-Russia pundits do say that Ukraine's army is on the verge of collapse, but most of them were saying the same thing one year ago and two years ago and even three years ago. Maybe at some point they'll be correct, but I really do wonder. Because of drone warfare, the front lines have barely moved in three years.

Similarly, lots of experts have been also predicting the collapse of NATO for several years, and I certainly did as well, but the most recent public summit hardly gives any indication of that. Since I hate for my predictions to be wrong, I've suggested a reasonable way of giving NATO's collapse a major "nudge."

Meanwhile, the provocations of the West have steadily become bolder and more reckless, certainly suggesting that they (in my opinion wrongly) believe that Russia is very weak. Attacks on Russia's nuclear triad and attempts to assassinate Putin are very serious matters, and these follow the successful assassinations of some top Russian generals and that huge terrorist attack that killed well over 100 concert-goers.

Russia seems never to have effectively retaliated for any of those previous provocations and despite all the predictions of Ritter and Doctorow, it never retaliated for the most recent ones, so the NATO leaders are just getting steadily emboldened, potentially leading to disaster.

I just don't count drone or missile strikes against Ukrainian targets as effective retaliation. The NATO people certainly don't seem to view it as such.

    City after city, eh?

I like how you got 3 agrees for your comment and yet you didn't name a single city. It's more like small town small after town after throwing a thousand men at drones. That is what the war currently looks like. Russia uses 2 week conscripts on motorcycles in meat wave attacks to capture small amounts of territory.

Kharkiv is 30 minutes from the Russian border and is still in Ukrainian hands. What is your excuse for that city remaining untouched? They're not even in Russian shelling range. 30 minutes away.

The Nazis took all of Ukraine in a couple months.

Here is a live camera of Kharkiv:
    https://webcam.scs.com.ua/en/europe/ukraine/kharkov/

    They're business as usual.

They should continue to focus on that success and in the long term BRICS and de-dollarization will lead to the continued decline of the EU and the US empire.

What makes you think this war will be some type of economic win for Russia? They already had vast amounts of undeveloped land. Russians are currently having a hard time affording potatoes:
    https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/potato-price-surge-fuels-inflation-pain-russias-poorest-2025-06-10/

What the war looks like and what about 4-5 pro-Russian bloggers want this war to look like have been separate from the beginning. As a reminder both MacGregor and Ritter declared the war to be over in 2022. They both said that Ukraine was out of men and should completely surrender. Now they tell us that Ukraine is about to collapse and needs to give land to Russia to end the war. So they went from telling us that Ukraine won't exist to Ukraine will exist but they need to submit to Putin before they collapse....again. I fail to see why so many here correctly apply skepticism to MSM pundits but when it comes to MacGregor/Ritter/Martyanov/Duran they are treated like sacred prophets that should never be questioned. It just leads to the same mindless conformity that rots the MSM. Are we talking about reality on the ground or what some biased pundits want us to believe?

Ben Franklin and Thomas Edison were right about many things that proved to be beneficial to everybody. Franklin also wanted the Turkey to be our national bird and also had the notion that turkeys could be cooked by electrocution. Edison was against alternating current in favor of direct current like batteries. Edison cruelly electrocuted elephants in a slimy dishonest way to convince the public that Tesla's backing of alternating current was dangerous. So what if a writer like Ron has an idea or two many folks might disagree with. He has been right about so many other subjects, shouldn't Mother Jones just note they disagree with him on a few things, but are willing to hear him out on his areas of expertise?

People can't be totally forthright with each other if they can't politely disagree sometimes. Establishment Lefties seem not to comprehend this.

… those same colleagues tried to convince [Case and Deaton] to kill the study because it was politically incorrect.

Alas, not even the un-co-opted Yandex search engine produces any results supportive of the thesis that Case and Deaton were pressured not to publish. Nonetheless, it is plain from the large number of questionably premised attacks on their work that those who exult in or profit from white Americans' deaths, including the powerful and wealthy Woke establishment and the (((traditional enemies))) of white Christians, lost no time in reaching for the cudgels. Hence, the assertion that no one of any consequence in the Establishment ever leaned on the authors to suppress their findings and its counter-Narrative implications would simply beggar belief.

Here follow links to three interesting discussions:

    (1) An MSNBC interview. The interviewer is a jerk, but he does allow Case and Deaton to make their points. What some will find surprising, not to mention disappointing, is the extent to which the authors are on board with almost the entirety of the Establishment Narrative.

    (2) A frank hit piece by the notorious white hater Matthew Yglesias. Yglesias's most depressing observation is that, caving to Establishment pressure, Case and Deaton have, over the last six or seven years, steadily backed away from their politically unacceptable [ahem] original focus on the ultimate pariahs, blue-collar white men.

    (3) A brief article from Law and Liberty. This last confirms, for the umpteenth time, that Conservatism, Inc. is as profoundly anti-White, anti-Christian, and anti–authentic American as the Kosher Left it would have us proles think it opposes.

Weeks after the war began in 2022 both sides were on the verge of a peace agreement until Nuland and Boris Johnson convinced Ukraine to back out, according to then-Israeli PM Naftali Bennett and Ukraine’s lead negotiator Davyd Arakhamia.

She was giving her opinion in an interview.

Your video does not show that she pressured a head of state into accepting a position. It only shows her opinion on the subject.

The peace agreement you are referring to was never proposed to Zelensky and the host of that video (Glenn Greenwald, a known Putin supporter) did not investigate the weapons clause to which she referred.

The proposal included requiring that Ukraine hand over their long range artillery and also not be a part of NATO. That is why it was rejected and not because of a Jewish conspiracy.

Or go ahead and explain as to how that wouldn't simply be a trick to get Ukraine to demilitarize so Russia can then invade again.

The official GDP number from the Chinese gov. is Real GDP, not Nominal GDP. Here is an example:

    2012GDP is ¥51.9322 trillion ,2011GDP is ¥47.1564 trillion

51.9322 trillion -47.1564 trillion =4.7758 Trillion, then divided by 47.1564 trillion = up by 10.1% And this is Nominal GDP.

Official inflation in 2012 was 2.2%

China's official record was up 7.9%, I read some English web site sail China's GDP was up 7.8% in 2012, but that 0.1% difference is all due to Rounding.

I was scratching my head wondering why people are claiming China’s economy is struggling given their projected 5% growth rate for 2024 is healthy by Western standards.

China can pull whatever number out of its ass and call it it's current year GDP growth. After all it has the advantage of jailing whoever publicly disagrees.

For the record some economists claim the 5% number is inflated and China will only experience 2-3% annual growth in the next five years.

For the record China claims that Real Estate Construction used to be around 30% of its economy before the crash and that RE have been down around 30% per year since the crash started. That means that on year 1 of the crash, RE accounted for only 21% of China's GDP 30% * (100%-30% or .7) = 21%. In other words, ignoring all other factors, China's GDP went down 9% (from 30% to 21%) in the first year of the crash, just from the RE crash.

    Let's do some simple math.

Year 0 of the crash (2020) RE accounted for 30% of China's GDP.
Year 1 of the crash (2021) RE Accounts for 21% (30% *.7) of China's GDP.
Year 2 of the crash (2022) RE Accounts for 14% (21%*.7) of China 's GDP
Year 3 of the crash (2023) RE Accounts for 10% (14%*.7) of China's GDP
Year 4 of the crash (2024) RE Accounts for 7% (10*.7) of China's GDP.

So in the 4 years of the crash China's GDP went down a massive 23% (from 30% down to 7%) because of the RE crash.

Combine that with with around 2 million highly paid foreign workers leaving China, and with 30 million highly paid (for Chinese workers) Chinks losing their jobs as foreign companies left China, the massive Wuhan Flu lock downs, and you have to wonder ... Is China in a recession? or Is China in a depression???

I suspect that not many of Donald's supporters could say what his policy proposals actually are, and that the majority of them were indeed motivated by the "middle finger" impulse. Which is exactly what we should expect from a disenfranchised and essentially powerless population. Any real change will require the forceful overthrow of our corrupt elite ruling class; in the meantime we will have to settle for flipping it the bird at every available opportunity.

Exactly my sentiment. Trump was probably my lesser of two evils choice. He will appoint better judges. But if he manages to steers clear of the necon uniparty trajectory set by the elites still firmly in control, I expect he'll be assassinated. • But does the Chinese giant have feet of clay? In a recently published book, Why Nations Fail, economists Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson characterize China’s ruling elites as “extractive”—parasitic and corrupt—and predict that Chinese economic growth will soon falter and decline, while America’s “inclusive” governing institutions have taken us from strength to strength. They argue that a country governed as a one-party state, without the free media or checks and balances of our own democratic system, cannot long prosper in the modern world.

The authors are complete ass clowns if they believe the dying nation called the US is going from “strength to strength”. And where is this “free media” that supposedly keeps corrupt leftists and globalists in check?

Looks like an illustration of opportunism and academic dishonesty:

But while the authors turn a harsh eye toward elite misbehavior across time and space—from ancient Rome to Czarist Russia to rising China—their vision seems to turn rosy-tinted when they consider present-day America, the society in which they themselves live and whose ruling elites lavishly fund the academic institutions with which they are affiliated. Given the American realities of the last dozen years, it is quite remarkable that the scholars who wrote a book entitled Why Nations Fail never glanced outside their own office windows.

Neither of these three laureates ( Acemoglu, Johnson, and Robinson) is a gerontological case; the latter would explain, at least partially, their cognitive blindness. All three are around 60-year-old. Yet, how come that the alleged intellectuals Acemoglu & Robinson have declared "the free media or checks and balances of our own democratic system?" Have they read any research related to the state of democracy in the US? Like this quite popular research: "Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens" by Gilens & Page (2014) https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/perspectives-on-politics/article/testing-theories-of-american-politics-elites-interest-groups-and-average-citizens/62327F513959D0A304D4893B382B992B

If democracy means that all citizens should have a say in shaping government policy, our findings cast doubt upon just how democratic U.S. policymaking actually is... The researchers used a data set comprised of 1,779 policy issues over a 30-year period to estimate how much influence affluent citizens, organized interest groups and ordinary citizens each have on policy outcomes. They found that affluent citizens, those at the 90th-income percentile, have the most influence, followed by organized interest groups. However, the preferences of average citizens have no discernable, independent effect on policymaking at all...

"The U.S. is an oligarchy: a system of government where a small number of elites rule."

Why is this unrestrained bashing of China and Chinese government by Acemoglu & Robinson? To please the oligarchic US system?
The authors were already known for their sloppy research. Here is a response (2022) to their scholarly weak "The Narrow Corridor:" https://javierborras.substack.com/p/acemoglu-and-robinsons-chinese-straw

...the authors [Acemoglu & Robinson] state, “To see the limitations of Chinese state capacity, you need to look no further than the education system” (p. 69). They add that the Chinese state is unable to provide “affordable, high quality and meritocratic education”. -- Really? Is this the best example the authors could find of the dysfunctions of the Chinese system? Shanghai has ranked in top positions in the international PISA education exams, and the “gaokao” university entrance exam is considered one of fairest, toughest and most meritocratic in the world. In fact, education has been one of the areas in which even critics of the Chinese system have praised the country (usually arguing that the educational success is not due to the Chinese state, but to Confucian ethics). There are Chinese universities in the world’s top university rankings, directly competing with those in the US and the UK. The number of Chinese STEM graduates is far outpacing any other country.

These two, Acemoglu & Robinson, are unapologetic opportunists indeed.

It’s really quite remarkable just how totally crazy the Israelis are, and the Suarez book certainly strengthened that impression.

Back about seven or eight years ago I’d read Seymour Hersh’s famous Samson Option, and from what I remember one of the most shocking elements of what he reported has never gotten much attention in the reviews or discussions. I obviously can’t say whether it’s true, but Hersh does have a very good track-record.

Supposedly, back in the 1980s the Israeli government had gotten very angry and hostile to the USSR over its support for Israeli’s Arab enemies, which is hardly surprising. So the Israelis apparently developed a serious plan to use their nuclear arsenal to attack and destroy the Soviet Union. Obviously, it was never attempted and I’m not sure how seriously the government ever considered it, but for tiny Israel to even contemplate attacking the gigantic USSR at the height of the latter’s military power is really quite remarkable. I guess that’s what happens when you get away with successfully killing JFK, attacking the USS Liberty, and all sorts of similar things. It certainly does strengthen the plausibility that 9/11 was an Israeli operation.

Israel's decades long refusal to agree to internationally recognized borders has now become one of its worst liabilities.

Occasionally, I reflect upon various hypotheses concerning the potential outcome of what we're witnessing. I've considered one in which Israel reoccupies both Gaza and Lebanon and don't see how that's sustainable from multiple, very pragmatic angles such as the demographic explosion of work averse, militarily skittish Haredim, whose eventual takeover will drain the brightest intellects from Israel and herald a new era of theocratic rule. This, coupled with the nascent generation's memory of a transparent genocide and its eventual long-term effect on commercial and diplomatic relations, is going to make subsidizing that occupation virtually impossible.

It'll take time, to be sure, but it's beginning to happen as we speak.

But probably not this time: the only way Izrahell can return its evacuees northward is to utterly flatten and de-populate south Lebanon - up to the Litani River - with airstrikes, and then send in the troops to slaughter both Hezbollah fighters and all remaining "civilians". And, since the preparatory airstrikes are now well underway,

    • Agree: Oil Can Harry
  • My own guess is quite different. I think that the explosions indicate that despite media leaks to the contrary, the Netanyahu government had taken a firm decision to abandon plans for any ground invasion of Lebanon in the foreseeable future as just too risky. If any such invasion were now off the table, the pagers had lost their strategic value, so they were instead detonated for essentially political reasons. Netanyahu hoped that the serious damage and humiliation the attacks inflicted upon Hezbollah would provide his government with an immediate boost in popularity, helping to deflect the continuing anger over its lack of success in returning its displaced civilians to their homes in the north. Thus, under this interpretation, the pager explosions suggest that no ground invasion of Lebanon will take place.

Correct. Bibi repeatedly announced he would invade Lebanon but this was vetoed by the Israeli military because the IDF ground forces are exhausted after a year of fighting in Gaza. So Bibi did this to save face for not invading Lebanon.

The statement about "non-Western groups" does not say ALL non-Western individuals, it says "groups", i.e., the average of all the individuals in any of the groups; it's thus definitely true because all non-Western/non-White groups are racist (Whites are the only group/race who aren't racist, which is to our great detriment, unfortunately), and non-Western groups' most disliked race is usually White people.

To learn how Chairman Mao wrecked his nation from 1948-1975 check out these three incredible books by Frank Dikotter:

    Mao’s Great Famine (2010)

    The Tragedy of Liberation (2013)

    The Cultural Revolution (2016).

In 2006, Joseph Ball wrote an excellent article (link) that traced the "Mao killed millions" propaganda to a 1960s magazine named "China Quarterly" -- and it turns out that this magazine was funded by the CIA.

In my opinion, there are other reasons to be extremely sceptical of the propaganda. For example, Mao himself was a peasant, and famines were frequent under China's previous government, the Kuomintang (KMT). Mao knew personally what famines were like. Why would he inflict one on his own people?

In my view, Mao was one of the greatest men of the Twentieth Century. He achieved two miracles, back-to-back.

First, against overwhelming odds, his revolution was successful. This was an enormous accomplishment by itself, if we can judge by the many, many attempted revolutions that failed (by Che Guevara, for example). Furthermore, revolutions are relatively easy in a tiny country; it is far more difficult to move a population as huge as China was already (300 million people then). Yet Mao succeeded.

Second, Mao's China grew. Some people like Ron Unz sneer at Mao's economic performance, but they forget how far he had to climb. Mao started with a shattered country, one of the poorest in the world. As I said, famines were frequent under China's previous government, the KMT. Mao overcame that huge problem. By the time of his death, China's population was well-fed and thoroughly educated, and the country's economy was growing 6% a year; the potential market was enormous. By then, China was clearly ready for industrial takeoff. Mao did all this despite the US's crippling sanctions, which were imposed almost as soon as the People's Republic was established. In my opinion, the economic growth was a second miracle.

A successful revolution is a great achievement by itself; only a few have accomplished it in the 20th century (Lenin, Gandhi, Castro are examples). But the second consecutive miracle of economic growth is extremely difficult. In the 20th Century, I can think of only one other double-miracle worker, Vladimir Lenin -- and Lenin's country failed eventually. Mao's country is still going strong, due largely to the foundations he laid. Mao was a great man.

That’s a very foolish argument. The PRC government has publicly declared that Mao’s famine killed 18 million people. So perhaps you believe that the PRC government is actually controlled by the CIA?

However, 18 million is almost certainly just a whitewash. I’ve repeatedly discussed this issue over the years and here’s one of my comments from earlier this year:

However, several years ago I read TOMBSTONE, a very lengthy analysis of the same issue written by a retired former high-ranking Chinese journalist, who was outraged over what had happened to his people and how the truth had been covered up for decades. He was assisted in his research by numerous other former or serving Chinese officials who had similar sentiments, and I thought he made a very strong case that the true number of deaths had probably been 35 million or higher, based upon several different independent demographic methods. The PRC government prevented his book from being available in China itself, but I think it was published in Hong Kong and later an English version in the West.

But the strongest evidence come from just considering what happens during a gigantic famine. Obviously lots of people of all ages die, but young children are most vulnerable, while infant mortality skyrockets and fertility rates collapse. So you get a big hole in your population pyramid that remains very visible for the next couple of generations. Here’s the Chinese population pyramid:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_China#Population_of_China_by_age_and_sex_(demographic_pyramid)

What you see is an absolutely gigantic hole in China’s population pyramid. Are you claiming that the CIA secretly gained control of China’s Census Bureau?

Everyone knows that Ukraine and the rest of the USSR had a huge famine in the 1930s, with many, many millions of deaths. But last time this came up, someone located a copy of the Soviet population pyramid and although it showed a hole caused by that famine, the hole in the Chinese pyramid was enormously worse. So I think the figure of around 35 million Chinese deaths seems pretty plausible to me.

As noted at the time, the Ukrainian graph signifies the opposite of what you claim. According to demographic estimates separated from Cold War propaganda, 2.6 million Ukrainians died abnormal deaths in the famine of 1932-3.

    https://www.jstor.org/stable/3092980#:~:text=Using%20all%20available%20data%2C%20it,and%20530%2C000%20deported%20to%20gulags.

The mortality rates at the height of this famine in 1933 were around 70/1000, much higher than anything which has ever been claimed for China in the year 1960. The most common source for demographic analysis of China in the relevant era if Judith Banister, China's Changing Population. Banister places the death rate in 1960 for China at 44.6. Some authors like Jung Chang, Mao: The Unknown Story, claim 4.37% for 1960, which is slightly below Banister's estimate. But 44.6 is much lower than 70. All evidence shows that Ukraine had a much higher death rate in 1933 than China did in 1960.

The sharp drop which you see on that graph mostly corresponds to a drop in births. When things were mobilized for the attempt at a Great Leap Forward then this would have already disrupted the normal reproduction process. In 1958 the mortality rate increased from the 18.12 which had occurred in 1957 to 20.65 according to Banister's model, and then to 22.06 in 1959. These types of mortality rates would not have been regarded as "famine" in either pre-revolutionary China or Russia, but they reflect a pressure to slow down on making babies. The year 1960, with typhoons and droughts sweeping across China, was a classical type of famine. Obviously, reproduction stayed low then and only began to recover afterwards. But your comparison with the Ukrainian graph shows simply that the sudden drop in recorded infants does not correspond mainly to a rise in the death rate, but to a fall in the birth rate.

No, but Mao's successor was Deng Xiaoping. Deng was pushing his capitalist reform and could not do it without making Mao look bad. Therefore Deng lied a lot -- one of the things for which I dislike him intensely. (The other is his toleration of massive corruption.)

Deng is celebrated in the West for his capitalist ways. Western economists speak approvingly of China's rapid economic growth under his watch, over ten percent a year in some years. But (1) they all ignore the huge inflation that also happened, and (2) I think that Mao's 6% growth rate, if sustained, would eventually have made China one of the world's largest economies anyway.

Westerners point to Deng's capitalist road as the primary reason for China's spectacular growth in the last few decades. But I think an even more important reason was China's break with the Soviet Union and the US's rush to take advantage of that, resulting in the end of US sanctions in 1972. China was finally able to take developmental shortcuts by importing Western tools and technology. They were shortcuts only, as without them China's excellent education system would eventually have produced enough scientists and engineers to catch up technologically with the West. (See Yang Zhenning's Nobel Prize in physics, awarded to him and Li Zhengdao in 1957 for their ground-breaking work on parity violation. By the way, Yang is also the Yang in Yang-Mills theory, one of the foundations of String Theory.)

The massive corruption of Deng's time would eventually have destroyed all of China's growth since then. China has apparently survived that, but we will probably have to wait a few generations to see if Xi Jinping's anti-corruption drive has really worked.

I know this is a rhetoric question. But for the general info of the readers: China and Chinese government had and still have been infiltrated by a lot of foreign (CIA or otherwise) agents. For example, Chinese government just reveals 2 weeks ago they have arrested thousands of spies and intelligence agents from Taiwan.

Given the close sharing of intelligence among the 5-eyes and other US lackeys, it should not be a surprise that CIA had (or has?) control of some departments in Chinese government.

Your sort of speculation might be fun to consider, but is rather pointless. Maybe simply as a pastime, wondering how the world could have been. History is history, and it's like saying that Rome would have been different had Caesar not crossed the Rubicon. Well... yes, but what was cannot be undone.

Remember, the KMT was a corrupt operation from the get-go. It's not like they had popular support--any more than the Communists. Actually less. Plus, who can really say how Chiang would have wound up had the KMT won the Civil War?

Prior to 1949, China was essentially run by local factions, each with their own power centers and goals. Mao's accomplishment was to unify China politically, something the KMT was unable to accomplish. Now, you may not like how he did it, but how else was it to be done? Realistically?

Mao was a revolutionary. Once the revolution was consolidated, his purpose was over. Deng's genius was to essentially adapt Italian Fascism to China. A marriage of state/private run corporate entities geared toward benefitting Chinese as a nation. And before anyone laughs at that description, also remember that the KMT had their own 'neofascist' New Life Movement. Really, a Confucian concern for the state as a nation, over the interests of the individual operating alone.

Of course human nature will always find that private interests tend to overshadow directed corporate social benefits, but this falls under the legal realm of corruption. Something the Communist Party works hard to overcome. I've said this often, but US politicians could not be members of the CPC, because they are too corrupt in accepting bribes, and in any case their loyalty is to a foreign country (Israel). Something the Communists would never tolerate.

Had the KMT remained in power then the mortality rate of China would not have dropped from 38 per thousand in 1949 to 18.12 in 1957. The major natural disasters of typhoons and droughts which occurred in 1960 would still have brought the death rate up to something like 44.6 per thousand (not really any different from the 1936 famine) but no one would bother throwing around the kinds of figures which they do with Mao. China was most certainly better with the defeat of the KMT.

Had Chiang and the KMT won then they wouldn’t have been under any western blockades and wouldn’t have had to take such drastic measures as the Great Leap Forward. So it’s really comparing kiwi to durian.
It’s like the people that say “oh Venezuela is having these problems because they are socialists”. Really? Compare the benefits countries like Qatar and Kuwait give their citizens. Highly “socialist”. Libya under Qaddafi had high human development index and were highly “socialist”. The difference is those countries use (or used in the past tense in the case of Libya) their huge hydrocarbon profits for their people. Venezuela- in spite of having more oil than Saudi Arabia was still one of the most violent nations on earth with huge wealth disparity. Venezuela was run by oligarchs tied to US oil companies. Chavez tried to start making it more like Libya (or Qatar or Kuwait but those are so small in comparison) but it was going to take a long time. But unlike the Gulf Arabs - Venezuela became clipped by heavy U.S. sanctions. So to try to compare them is not realistic. Libya was able to maneuver because Qaddafi gave up nukes in exchange for not being shut out of the global economic system. He was killed later for wanting Africa to control its own resources. Now Libya looks like China did during its civil war.
My point is being able to govern facing pressure from global hegemony is different than developing “unimpeded”.

Chiang and Mao had very very different conditions to deal with. What is factual is - no foreign embargoes equals no Great Leap Forward

Impossible. When the CPC took power in 1948, China's literacy rate was 16% and life expectancy was around 40 yrs old and the country was destroyed. By the time Mao passed away (1976), his "socialist" programs had increased literacy rate to over 75%, lifespan to around 65 yrs old and Industrial Capacity capable (with Soviet input in the 1950's).

Simple question. Why did the West choose China over India to invest? India is democratic, has a similar population size and low wages? Surely the West would prefer to uplift democrats vs those slant eyed commis. Answer is simple, educated and healthy labor force which is why China was chosen in the 1970's. I won’t even touch on your story. But let’s stick to the context of what Mr Unz wrote. If what you say is true - then that means 40 years ago China would have passed the U.S. So then what would have happened? Would the U.S. had gone quietly and been fine being #2 back then? Let’s be real here. The whole point is China being #1 should in no way negatively affect the quality of life of the U.S. But many in the U.S. - mainly the ruling class violently hate the thought of it. They didn’t like it when Japan was getting close. But as we see China is 10x bigger than Japan. So regardless of who was running China that would be the problem. In fact it would be even worse because Taiwan would not be in dispute and China would even have almost a complete lock on the semiconductor industry. So again - what would have taken place???

question about passport confiscation/deprivation, no, it is much worse now. Why? Because it wasn’t illegal for the government to deprive a citizen of a passport on political grounds before 1958, after which the government stopped doing it . . . until now. Now it still is illegal, but the government just does it anyway, as with so many other laws that it only applies on a who-whom basis.

A passport wasn’t necessarily required for international travel until the late 20th century. Passports were originally a wartime measure that metastasized and became a permanent feature of the global order. (Sound familiar?) Travel in some times and places required them, other times and places did not. The State Department gave out passports to private citizens as a discretionary measure if they thought the citizens needed them. The 1958 Kent v. Dulles Supreme Court ruling made passports into a civil right, which the government could not withhold without due process.

(Of course this tutelary order soon got busy carving out exceptions for favored causes. In 2002 an appellate court decided that well, actually, the government can withhold the civil right of your passport if you haven’t paid enough child support.)

  • Here is Peter Dickinson of the Atlantic Council, who argues that Putin isn’t serious about holding the Ukrainian land taken by Russian forces or about his veiled warnings regarding a sharp response to provocations: “Meanwhile, the multiple retreats from ‘historically Russian land’ conducted by Putin’s invading army since 2022 suggest that the chances of a nuclear apocalypse have been wildly exaggerated. This should help Kyiv’s Western partners overcome their self-defeating fear of escalation, and encourage them to finally provide Ukraine with the tools, along with the free hand, to finish the job of defeating Russia.

    What a clueless globalist idiot.

Putin is clearly very serious about hitting back at NATO. But mainstream-media writers figure that people in Peoria don’t need more worries. Nor do they need to know that America and NATO are attacking Russia, and in ways that have nothing whatever to do with the war. The mainstream media never move their audience outside their comfort zone.

Indeed, in his recent interview with Tucker, Jeffrey Sachs revealed that in the reader’s comments section of online media ordinary American sheeple routinely crow that Putin is just bluffing about using nukes.

Sure, you're right. The fact that Ukraine, the country encompassing the area through which Russia has been invaded to its disaster several times, was flirting heavily with NATO, the military organization composed of several powerful countries, that was created to oppose, basically, Russia, the fact that NATO had already expanded eastward in the past 20 years right to the border of Ukraine, those things had nothing to do with it. It was only Putin's greed and his Napoleonic complex.

The Ukraine cannot be an independent nation. There are only a handful of truly independent nations in the world. The simple heuristic is to ask "who guarantees this nation's independence?" If the answer is not "the nation itself," then it is not truly independent. Obviously, the Ukraine does not and cannot guarantee its own independence, therefore it is dependent. The Ukraine can only exist within the western sphere or within the Russian sphere. There is no third "independent" option, and any claimed independence would be a lie. The western sphere attempted to poach the Ukraine from the Russian sphere, and war was the predictable result.

Then, why doesn't Ron Keeva Unz write about the abundance of "Freedom of Speech" in world's so many Muslim-majority countries?

On the UNZ Review why does a Muslim-convert -- namely Dr. Kevin Barrett -- constantly try to WHITEWASH historic Islamic brutality on anyone pointing out non-existence of freedom of speech in Muslim-majority countries?

Answer is: Dr. Kevin Barrett has long become a Muslim scum by his conversion to the filth.

World’s Muslims think based on the following written accounts from 1400 years of Islamic history:

[][] “Indeed, those who malign Allah and his messenger, Allah has cursed them in this world and the hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating punishment. And those who malign believing men and believing women undeservedly, they bear the guilt of slander and obvious sin. O prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their veils close around them. That will be better, so that they may be recognized and not molested. Allah is always forgiving, merciful. If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease and the alarmists in the city do not stop, we will indeed urge you on against them, then they will be your neighbors in it only for a little while. Cursed, they will be seized wherever they are found and killed with a slaughter.” (al-Qur’an 33:57-61)

Abu ‘Afak was a poet who was over one hundred years old, and had mocked Muhammad in his verses. Muhammad asked his companions: “Who will avenge me on this scoundrel?” One of them murdered Abu ‘Afak in his sleep.

Likewise with another poet who mocked him: The poetess ‘Asma bint Marwan. Muhammad on another occasion cried out, “Will no one rid me of this daughter of Marwan?” One of Muhammad’s companions, ‘Umayr ibn ‘Adi, went to her house that night, where he found her sleeping next to her children. The youngest, a nursing babe, was in her arms. But, that didn’t stop ‘Umayr from murdering her and the baby as well. Muhammad commended him: “You have done a great service to Allah and His Messenger, ‘Umayr!” (Ibn Ishaq, 674-676)

Then there was Ka’b bin al-Ashraf, another poet whose crime was mocking Muhammad. Muhammad again asked his companions: “Who is willing to kill Ka’b bin al-Ashraf who has hurt Allah and His Apostle?” One of the companions, Muhammad bin Maslama, answered, “O Allah’s Apostle! Would you like that I kill him?” When Muhammad said that he would, Muhammad bin Maslama said, “Then allow me to say a (false) thing (i.e., to deceive Kab).” Muhammad responded: “You may say it.” Muhammad bin Maslama duly lied to Ka’b, luring him into his trap, and brutally murdered him. Sure. Under the persuasive Herman/Peterson reconstruction something like 100,000 to 200,000 Tutsis were massacred by Hutus, but several times more Hutus were massacred by Tutsis, perhaps as many as a million or more.

By contrast, the official narrative is that nearly all killers were Hutu extremists and nearly all the victims were Tutsis or "moderate Hutus."

Whenever there is a Muslim terror attack, the US goes crazy downplaying it. Now, they go straight to Isis? Which most people believe is a joint CIA-Mossad militant group? All we can know for sure is that the retaliation will be brutal. The Ukrainians will regret this attack. For a very long time.

The US is blaming ISIS for this.

Interesting that in ten years ISIS has attacked Russia, the Taliban, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan and China but as far I can tell they never once committed an act of terror against Israel. Kinda strange for Islamic fundamentalists to have no beef with Israel.
