I wonder if the fact that Santa Ana and El Paso are two homogenous cities has anything to do with the lower crime rates? I do think that immigration shouldn’t just be seen through a lense of criminality. The effects on culture should be analyzed as well. Just looking at past crime rates doesn’t tell the whole story.

There are people involved in this situation. It is not just numbers and statistics about crime that makes people anxious about immigration. Ignoring the underlying, compounding division in our society is not a wise thing to do. In this situation the political and cultural implications do matter because the more diverse, yet segregated communities become, the more distrusting of each other they end up as well. That, in turn, exacerbates the social ills we have have already inflicted upon ourselves.

Whether or not you agree with the sentiment of the anti-immigration backers or their politics, they are people and their votes and opinions matter. Their fear of their culture being washed away and eroded by people that don’t assimilate quite quickly enough should be taken into account just as the worries of Hispanics being mistreated and misconstrued should merit the same weight. That fear, whether you believe is warranted, is still there. It will likely never go away as I do think being distrusting of others is human instinct that can very well be subdued by not completely erased. This distrust is being displayed by our rather increasingly dysfunctional government at this very moment. A government divided into different factions, with different goals and paths towards them with no compromise of between their ideas in sight.

A visual experiment may help illustrate things. Imagine you’re making a salad dressing. We need an emulsifier to mix small amounts of oil into vinegar since water and oil can coincide but don’t mix. What is our emulsifier as a society? If the rising distrust within our society leads us to a path where compromise is unreasonable due to the now overuse of our identities instead of our values, merit, and skill then how do we progress as a united country? Being in favor of the status quo in immigration, without taking into account how the rapid exponential change we have experienced the last 40 years has affected the cultural fabric of this country, will result in a future where we become a segregated, balkanized country.

There’s some fallacy in claiming that religious or uneducated people are more opposed to GMOs. In the international graph this is pretty obvious: more religious countries like the USA are fanatically in favor (believing in God and in “science”, i.e. technology, seems to be the about same), while more agnostic ones are rather against. Also, more educated countries are generally against, while less educated ones tend to be in favor.
It’s not “all over the place” as you want to believe. Nor it’s just a “the rich” vs. “the poor” issue. As wealth and education are almost intrisecally associated.
A most important issue is that the consumer should have the ultimate choice and every single food that uses GMOs should be tagged as such, as well as other tags, like the origin of the products (it’s likely that people is ready to pay a little more for a local product that has less impact in global warming or alien species dispersal through globalized trade – but they can’t choose if they are denied the information).
But a most important concern about GMOs is that they make farmers dependent of vicious mulinationals, instead of getting their own seed from their crops or local seed banks. Also genetic diversity, believe it or not, is of outmost importance to preserve and the benefits of GMOs are in most cases yet to be proven. Who is going to preserve the genetic diversity of crops if they are all replaced by bio-industrial products? We need to act with common sense and caution, not with a fanatic faith in technology, much less in the multinationals that control these industrial seeds. We have already experienced how pesticides and other chemicals, and specially irrational abusive use of them, have polluted our soil, water and health, we don’t need more of the same. We need diversity, sustainable agriculture, regional food self-sufficiency, and a reintegration of humankind with nature: not more irrational fanatic divergence.

Obviously our societies are still far from full equality (even if there’s been much progress in the last century). Therefore it’s just impossible to conclude that if less women are active in sciences this is because of intrinsecal gender-difference reasons. It might be but certainly this is not the kind of data that could support such conclussion.
Example: my sister, a clever and disciplined person, an excellent student, wanted to study engineering. My father, who is an engineer himself, persuaded her out of that idea on his belief that it’s a field dominated by males where he would have to strive a lot to suceed. She studied informatics and is now a succesful professional in that field and has two children. She’s sufficiently valued at work as not to have any problems at all with maternity leaves and the like.
Instead my brother was a much more mediocre student and not as smart at all (not dumb, just average). He choose engineering and my father supported him blindly. He had serious problems to finish his career but well, he finally managed to do it.
At least my experience suggests, not just in the mentoned cases but in many others as well, that our culture has still a long way to go to reach full equality. I was surprised to find out that falcon and hawk are not (at least strictu sensu) synonims. I thought this might be due to English being a second language to me but actually Wikipedia says that, in the wider sense, “hawk” can stand for small members of the families Falconidae, Pandionidae and Accipitridae (this last being the one that includes “true hawks” and eagles).

Also I don’t think that atheism is derived from science, at least not directly. Atheism is derived from the inverosimilitude of religious claims: they are such incredible and unrealistic miracle-based doctrines that the logical reaction is rejection of such gods – and by extension atheism. Would we not have such doctrines in which the alleged gods become deeply involved (mythically) with the formation of reality and the evolutions (not evolution) of humankind, science would have nothing to say about divinity in abstract. In fact atheism and pantheism are broadly the same thing: what is the difference between Reality and God? Of course this is not the personal alien “god” of JCM doctrines and legends but just another name for Reality and/or the ultimate cause of existence.

Makes some sense in my experience but just some. Anyhow (and this is important) most people have both in a quite balanced manner (assuming they have several children, of course), including energic women. I come from a large family and most branches have both daughters and sons. One of my aunts had only boys and could be argued that she is a high-testosterone woman but other subbranches have only girls and the women in those nuclear families do not seem more low-testosterone than any others: in fact they are the only career women around, what would rather suggest they are less “girly”, right?

Not sure. Anyhow, in this case, it’s clear (as I said before) that the very vast majority of homosexuals are born in heterosexual couples. And you and others mentioned that gays tend to have very low reproductive rates. So there must be a reason why the trait appears once and again and not in a very marginal tiny remnant but quite frequently. Of course, genetic reasons are probably just part of the reasons but they are there too.

Female fecundity was interpreted as meaning the total number of children born. I wonder how strong the correlation between perceived female beauty and fecundity is.
I also suspect there may be a correlation. If the gene (or genetic combo) makes men more “femenine”, it may also make women more “femenine” and therefore more attractive in general. I don’t think we still understand well the genetics behind sexual dimorphism, do we?

It’s obvious that J28 is around the corner (at least three studies about the supposed causes of homsexuality in so few days!) but anyhow… what this other article suggests is that genetically the causes (some of the causes?) of male homosexuality may simultaneously give greater fecundity to their sisters (or other relative females). So in a sense gays also breed… indirectly.
And it also means it’s a nonsense to try to control it eugenically: apart of going against human rights and dignity, it also goes against the evolutionary reality. We don’t really need these studies to know: if the trait is there, it’s for a reason, that should be valid for rationalists and for deists equally. It’s just common sense.

But society would certainly improve if certain categories of people (i.e. tories and fundamentalists) who now breed in clear excess would not. That would speed up change and increase the joy of life. It’s certainly not the same being gay, liberal and/or atheist against the current (that causes emotional and psycho-social difficulties – exhaustion in general, as you have to fight for every single bit of freedom, outside and even inside yourself) than within the current.

Anyhow, guess that single children are just less likely to be gay: the most publicited of the two recent studies clearly suggests that having older brothers increases significatively the chances of being gay among males (no idea about females). They mentioned epigenetic in-womb likely causes but one could equally think of “epigenetic” enviromental/psycho-social childhood causes as well (i.e. admiration for those older brothers and possibly being used to have a subordinate position in personal relations with other men).
In any case it’s clear it’s not just raw genetics, even if it may affect the way the brain works. So it’s not like you can control that via phoeticide.

So basically, I’m suggesting that one part of the problem is that boys are just brow-beaten into a sort of depressed lethargy. They are picking up these constant messages about how terrible they are and eventually they just quit trying.

I think you are onto something. Actually in my reality kids are surely more promiscuous or at least more sexually active now than 20 years ago. It’s just that now it’s normal and preservatives are available everywhere.  
 
But, unlike in the states, in my offline reality, Christian fundamentalism is something of the past, something that has mostly been buried deep underground with the last ayatollah-fuhrer of Western Europe and that almost nobody, even those who were not born then, wants to revive.

What’s so good about having less sex? It certainly our civilization, born in the 1960s (roughly), seems to be declining according to your data. And that’s too my subjective opinion: nothing good has happened since the late 80s or early 90s. Once rock became replaced by techno-pop and the revival of disco… well, it explains it all, doesnt it? Even gregorian music became a hit not so long ago.

In Colombia I heard “gasioso”. In Venezuela the word was “refresca”.
“Gaseosa” and “refresco” surely. In Spain “refresco” means any kind of soda drink, or even non-gaseous non-alcoholic beverages like juices or lemonade, while “gaseosa” is an specific type of soda (water, sugar and gas) in other time very popular. “Soda” is a non sugary carbonated water added to some liquors like Martini in some traditional taverns and “tónica” is a bitter soda drink, mostly but not necesarily of the Schwepps trademark.
Why do I use “soda” in English? Because that’s how I learn’t it in Virginia. I was unaware of other terms as my host county is dark yellow in that map (in this case it seems correct).

Or vice versa. Some elements of Old World civilization are clearly eastern (or maybe double independent) developements. Even pottery was developed in Japan before Neolithic existed anywhere. But the Chinese civilization existed long before the Tocharians arrived to Uyghuristan (at least 2100 BCE vs c. 1800 BCE) and seems totally unrelated. That is obviously just cultural aplications of the same intelligence: your ancestors and mine were doing the same a few thousand years ago. If IQ tests can’t find intelligence in people who is so obviously smart, then they are wrong.
But there are, I understand, IQ tests that can reasonably overcome cultural and educational differences like those. The problem here is that actually there are no such test results for the !Kung (and many other ethnicities). It’s a politically motivated hoax and you are swallowing it with incredible naivety.
Show me the raw data: what test, on what sample, in which date, which language, and, if such data exists at all (what I’m starting to doubt more and more) it should be fairly easy to show it’s comparing apples and oranges. Do you think a classical Eurocentric test performed in a non-native language in 1930 is the same as a refined test performed in a native language in 1990? And that assuming those tests are actually there and it’s not, as I suspect, another Piltdown Man.
In any case I don’t think it’s a genetic matter, at least not primarily. It may be cultural, nutritional or whatever you wish but hardly genetic only. Certainly Lynn’s maps resemble too much the rates of literacy and stuff like that, that are not genetically caused but a direct product of public expenditure and other socio-economical factors.

Ok, thanks. I will look at it with more time but certainly a test made in 1933 and another in 1998 cannot be compared. The tests are wildly different and the language used is not mentioned. You almost always score lower when testing in non-native languages, just because you may not understand the question or recognize words so easily. It depends on the type of test, of course. I can’t find any data for the Bushmen.

Another random review notes that an argument of Sarich’s racist faulty logic is that human races should be considered like bonobos (that he calls “pygmy chimpanzees”) and chimpanzees. He doesn’t seem to know that these are two different species separated by several million years of divergence, not like human types.
Present serious stuff or move on. There is absolutely no difference between teaching this racist junk and doing the same with creationism. Lynn is financed by a racist foundation. The little I’ve looked upon those “facts” is that they are more dubious than the Bible. As I said, since decades, ago most countries don’t make IQ stats nor keep track of this factor. Neither Lynn nor his obsolete and more than questionable sources have invested in actually testing samples people in their native languages. And, yes, the language in which an IQ test is made does affect the performance strongly, as it affects if you have some basic education or not (and of course malnutrition – but that would at least report a real issue).

I know it’s impossible to have correct and actualized IQ stats in all the planet. Would that be something the different governments or local educational institutions cared about and kept testing, they would have something to compare. But such stats simply don’t exist in most cases and I am not aware that Lynn or his collaborators have ever travelled around the world testing populations. They are comparing apples and oranges.
