RSSYes, I was evicted from Vung Tau last April, 2021…so hunkering down in KL waiting for the craziness to subside. Yes travel is like a bad trip – I would never imagine such scenes in the airports as you can see now.
Voltaire never said it – why would he? He lived in an absolute monarchy.
I’ve got to agree with you there. It is all about people and not the place with LD. A very insightful man.
Ba Muoi Ba has been around forever in VN, incuding during the war.
Yes I’ve heard the Army quarantine conditions are pretty spartan. They say you should be prepared with a Q-bag with towels, reading material and anything else you need to make life worth living. Luca’s was roaring before the virus, said to be the best Italian in town. Not sure now as most places while being open have taken a big hit in trade. No foreign tourists or businessmen of course. I live very close to the VFB which is my de facto local. Hope I can hook up with if you do make it to VT. Maybe I should give you my virus story, I’ve been an expat for 40 years working oil & gas in many parts of the world.
This opus cheered me up greatly which was needed on another dreary day in the shipyard. Be positive and read Linh Dinh I say.
Yes it is true, here in Vung Tau there is no social distancing or mandatory mask wearing. Even temperature taking has dropped off to nothing. There is no testing at all because no one has it.
But on the flip side my residence is in KL and I’m stuck here working in the shipyard until who knows when. That is if I want to keep my job I mean.
No cases at all here in Vung Tau, and the shipyards are still open and never closed (I work in one). Temperature is taken at work and accomodation every day. Things are gradually opening up including bars and restaurants.
I thought the Dickens quotation was most apt for the current events. That’s the essence of LD’s writing, he can borrow as needed from past writers and add his evocative commentary.
You’d be suprised if you came to Vung Tau where I work. Loads of white boomers here, admittedly mostly Australians, but a smattering of Americans and Europeans. Beers set you back about $0.65 a pop at a tavern and food/lodging is cheap. BTW LD has written at least 2 pieces about this place. My colleagues jokingly say “Welcome to Paradise”, but we’re all day in a construction yard – I’d say on the beach side of town it wouldn’t be a bad place to retire.
Military Industrial Complex dude, the one Eisenhower warned us about.
I wonder about how Linh sets up his camera – so much saturation! Most of the photos just bleed colour. I find it interesting as it makes the subject so intense.
Hope to meet LD some day here in Vung Tau, I’ve been reading his stuff for years. His prose just keeps getting better and better and output is prolific.
However, Belly’s is not really my cup of tea with the usually morose crowd of Aussies – being from the southern USA I have nothing in common with them. I usually imbibe at the VFB which is my preferred bar in VT. Nice airy place and the friendly girls are not pushy.
