At its heart, it’s very simple. Taking an area depends very much on who has more pieces there.
Another way it differs from chess is that the value of a piece fluctuates depending on the placement of other pieces and position on board. It’s impossible for beginners to assess the relative weighting of pieces, areas of control. Whereas in chess you can track the value of pieces pretty easily. Control the center. A queen will almost always be worth more than a knight. A king is always more than any piece.

I said a Ron Unz “on the board” would be ambiguous. A better visualization is to see Ron Unz “above the board”. A UFO moving independently two inches aboard the pieces, then making the pieces move themselves as if it was a third player in the game.

Partially true. Both you and Ron have working points. I’d add the games of go and chess as a useful analogy.

In go, the object is to surround the pieces with your pieces. Having a numerical advantage is hugely important. In chess, the numerical advantage is relatively unimportant. One queen is equal to nine pawns. One king is more than all the pieces. Both games have two colors only, two players only.
