Mary Seacole was forgotten for years, usually a mere footnote in eye-witness participant accounts of the Crimean War.

Her posthumous “rediscovery” and acclaim in recent years in an amazing phenomenon in itself and certainly worth a book or two.

The book has its flaws; asking men over seventy to recall their thoughts about people and events a full half-century earlier is inevitably asking people to “remember” what they subsequently imagined happened or was said to whom and by whom.

The exclusion order applied to about half of Oregon and the State of Washington, all of California and an inexplicable bite of southern Arizona. I now live in Siem Reap in Cambodia; a few years ago, my partner -a Khmer – was working as a book-keeper at a Casino hotel (owned by the infamous Khmer billionaire timber baron Ty Heap) on the border with Vietnam and I recall watching the Vietnamese patrons of the casino – from the cities of Pleiku and Kontum – coming to lose money and I have very seldom seen people so unjoyous. I scornfully turned down a teaching hour Western International School in Siem Reap (Cambodia) which paid $8/hour because my last part-time job had been $18/hour teaching pharmacy employees at Fench-owned U-Care. A woman working hard on a building site (!) here is doing well to make $8 a day while the best cocktails in the Raffles Hotel (owned by the Kingdom Group of Companies chaired by the Emir Waleed bin Talal bin Abdul-Aziz As-Saud) charges $12 for a good gin-and-everything cocktail in a brilliant cocktail lounge with lovely books to sit and read and chessboards. On the other hand, a small marijuana pizza from Ecstatic Pizza on the street facing the children’s hospital – enough to stone two people quite well – is $9.
