RSSThanks. And I really didn't mean to be so harsh towards Rich, but it's just that I spent five years having to constantly debunk that idiotic "vaping" theory and until now I'd never known the original source of it. I can't blame Rich---he proposed it as a possible hypothesis just a few weeks after the Covid epidemic began, when information was so extremely scanty, and it's not his fault it somehow took on a life of its own during in the years that followed.
Nathan Rich is not the only one who brought up the vaping theory. In fact quite of few American Tiktok refugees said on Chinese social media that they were seriously ill before the outbreak in Wanhan and their symptoms were quite similar to that of Covid-19.
Even if we ignore the vaping related disease around Fort Detrick

However, the other half of the theory was much more doubtful. During 2019 there had been a flurry of unusual respiratory illnesses across America, including more than 2,600 individuals requiring hospitalization and 68 deaths, with the condition labeled EVALI by the CDC. A public shutdown of Ft. Detrick for safety violations soon followed by a wave of illness with symptoms somewhat similar to Covid constitutes a tidy package providing simple talking-points, and this allowed the blame for the virus to be thrown back at the Americans. Many pro-China partisans jumped at this attractive opportunity, with the accusations sometimes amplified by Chinese officials or media organs.
Unfortunately, this hypothesis disintegrates upon any close examination of the evidence. An unusual aspect of Covid is the extreme age-skew, with victims over 60 having fatality rates perhaps a hundred times greater than those under 40, and the young being almost invulnerable. Indeed, according to some estimates the majority of deaths have been among individuals in their late 70s or older. By contrast, EVALI was an illness of youth, with 52% of the serious cases occurring among those younger than 25, compared to perhaps 0.2% for Covid. Thus, the profile of victims seems entirely dissimilar, differing by more than two orders of magnitude.
Moreover, the single most important characteristic of Covid is the extremely contagious nature of the disease, with outbreaks growing exponentially if not controlled by strong public health measures. But the graph of EVALI cases provided on the CDC website tells a very different story, rising sharply during the summer of 2019, but then tailing off to low levels by late December.

If thousands of Americans had become infected with Covid by mid-2019, the total would have reached many tens of millions by the end of the year, and the resulting hundreds of thousands of excess deaths would have ensured that no one paid any attention to emerging reports of some viral outbreak in Wuhan on the other side of the world. By contrast, there seems no evidence that EVALI was contagious, and according to the CDC it was strongly associated with the use of Vitamin E acetate in vaping products.
Thus, the two illnesses had entirely different age-profiles, entirely different epidemiological characteristics, and apparently different causes. No trace of Covid antibodies was found in America during the peak of the EVALI cases, which had already dwindled down to low levels several months before our Covid outbreak began. There were only a few dozen EVALI cases in the Ft. Detrick region and far more in California, Texas, Illinois, and New York. And much speculation notwithstanding, there is no evidence that anything, contagious, Covid, or otherwise, had leaked out of Ft. Detrick around the time of its temporary shutdown.
Thanks for your detailed explanation.
Is there a possibility that EVALI was just the testing-version of Covid-19? Why did they shut down the whole facility for just a couple of non-contagious cases? Again, why Fort Detrick turned down WTO’s requests for inspection TWICE if there’s nothing to hide?
BTW, I believe there’re reports that Italy and some other countries had found traces of Covid-19 in their waste water surveys months before the first case in Wuhan. I am not an expert in this area, but I’m trying my best to illustrate the following situation: gene sequence of the variant found in the first cases in Wuhan was the second (or third? I don’t quite remember the exact No.) generation of Covid-19, which means it was transmitted from somewhere ele to China.
Whatever our guess is, there’s no way we can get any direct information even if you request to check CDC documents by virtue of Freedom of Information Act.
Thank again for your patience.
EVALI had absolutely nothing to do with Covid. It's just some totally ridiculous nonsense that got into circulation on the Internet. If you're interested in the subject, you really should read some of my very detailed articles such as this one:
Is there a possibility that EVALI was just the testing-version of Covid-19?
That's also total nonsense, which I discussed at considerable length in the same long article.

LOL. Ft. Detrick is where America creates all of its illegal biowarfare weapons. Do you really think our government would allow it to be inspected by the WHO?
Again, why Fort Detrick turned down WTO’s requests for inspection TWICE if there’s nothing to hide?
Thanks, I just watched it. Unfortunately, Rich was 100% wrong about absolutely everything regarding Covid's origins, though I certainly can't really blame him since his video was released in February 2020, so early in the outbreak that solid information was extremely scarce. In fact, near the end he emphasized that all his conclusions were very preliminary and even pointed out some strong flaws in his hypothetical scenario.
About this “MetallicMan” , I failed to find out who he is. And Nathan Rich’s Youtube channel is 火锅大王. I’d like to strongly recommend that video of his to you ’cause he made a very graphic chart illustrating the sequence of events.

Even if we ignore the vaping related disease around Fort Detrick, that facility was fairly fishy because on one hand it does research on the basis of high volumes of documents and data collected by the notorious Unit 731, a branch of the Japanese Imperialist Army in charge of biowarfare and on the other hand it turned down WTO’s requests for inspection TWICE which the Wuhan facility has receive WTO’s inspections both times.
Calling theories that are not in favor of them “conspiracy” is a tactic that has been used multiple times as has been show in the modern history of the U.S.
Again, tks for your time and patience.

I'm not familiar with Nathan Rich, though I'm sure you're correct about his work.
But I have to point out that you may not be the first to spill the beans in the English-speaking world. An American influener living in China named Nathan Rich (“火锅大王” in Chinese) posted a video on Chinese platform bilibili on February 14th, 2020 in which he illustrated the sequence of relevant events with a detailed timeline that he had worked out.
Thank you for your reply.

There’s also a Chinese guy who did a convincing research about this himself. But he writes in Chinese. If you’d like to exchange some info with him, maybe I can hook you two gentlemen up. However, I totally understand it if you are too busy with other topics. After all, too many things are happening worldwide these days.
Have a nice day.

Hi Mr. Unz, I just finished reading your brilliant article American Pravda: “The Truth” and “The Whole Truth” About the Origins of Covid-19 and am glad to know a couple of details previously unknown to me.
He posted it on Youtube as well, but I don’t remember when exactly he did it.
Lastly, the then prime minister of Japan was attending a summit in Europe at the very early stage of the pandemic. He was told by European high officials that Covid-19 was a disease specifically for “yellow people”.
I'm not familiar with Nathan Rich, though I'm sure you're correct about his work.

I always knew COVID-19 was a biowarfare against China. But I thought it was Democrats who orchestrated it behind Trump’s back.
However, I believe your data pool must be larger than mine. So I’ll definitely read your article carefully later on.
As for DIRECT proof, I believe when there’re compelling circumstancial evidences, we don’t have to look for the smoking gun which has most probably long been pulverized.
Tks a lot for your integrity and your efforts to spread truth.
America is still the richest country in the world. No question about that. But the biggest chunk of America’s wealth is in the hands of a handful.
Despite Trump’s claim that China has been ripping off the US through trade, both sides benefit from our cooperation even though it is the US who takes the lion’s share of the profit.
Under our government’s guidance and supervision, Chinese corporations have to fulfill their social obligation of giving back to the society. Our government then reinvests their contributions in key infrastructure such as transportation and education.
On the American side, you people could still be living a much better life than ours if your billionaires were willing to share what they earn from foreign trade with you. But the problem is, there’re no authorities in your country to force this obligation on them. Quite naturally, they keep every penny to themselves.
Americans alway thought they were free. Many of them may still think so. But I’m sorry to say that’s your delusion. The rich have much more freedom than the majority of you Americans. When your freedoms contradict each other , who do you think will win out? You or the rich guy? When you are forced to yield to the rich guy’s will, do you still think you have freedom? Yep, nobody is above the law, yet the rich and/or powerful can always get away with whatever crime they may have committed while the poor and middle-class have to serve their time.
In China, the privileged/more powerful are supposed to have a bigger social responsibility. On the microscopic scale, big brothers and/or sisters are supposed to take care of their younger siblings. On the macroscopic scale, the rich are supposed to do more to help the general public. Surely private companies are more likely to be reluctant to give back to society. That’s why we ordinary Chinese are glad to see some big corporations are owned by the state and subject to the rule and guidance of the government.
BTW, we are taught at school to see through the appearance to perceive the essence. And what we see here is that you are not as free as you think and you were indoctrinated with, I’m sorry to say, propaganda.
No compliments to you since your idiomatic brain doesn’t allow you to master even a few simple Chinese words.
130 yrs ago in 1895
when Japan was forcing China to lease Taiwan to it, it has to sign an agreement with CHINA, not Taiwan or any other country, which means it was acknowledged by all that Taiwan was part of China.
80 years ago in 1945 Japan returned Taiwan to China in accordance with Potsdam Declaration in which it clearly read that Japan should return Taiwan and surrounding islands to China.
In the wake of the establishment of PRC, PLA was about to take back Taiwan when the US sent its aircraft carrier fleet to Taiwan strait.
Since then both sides of the strait haven’t signed a peace deal. The whole of China never held a referendem regarding the independence of Twiwan or whatsoever. So technically we are still in an unfinished civil war.
I don’t know where you get the idea of 150 years. Isn’t it proof that you are a poor product of Happy Education that you fail on both maths and history?
The vast majority of Taiwan population have close relatives like aunties, uncles or grandparents in the mainland. How do you count FIVE generations here?
We mainlanders started to use simplified Chinese on a large scale in 1956 to promote literacy. But if you have a grasp of Chinese history, you should know that simpler version of tradition Chinese has been in existence since the Oracle Bone Script of about 3,000 years ago. Besides, we can still recognize traditional Chinese written by Taiwan netizens even though it is not taught at school because it essentially is THE SAME LANGUAGE.
Why should the 1.4 billion of us allow Taiwan to go solo? Taiwan, as a province of China, concerns ALL of us. And as I said earlier, so far we haven’t held a referendem or anything like that.
We simply want to reclaim what’s rigjtfully ours. It doesn’t concern you foreiners. Why don’t you leave our domestic affairs alone?
Likening Taiwan to Canada is just another stupid mistake you make. As you admitted, Taiwan is a lost province of China which Canada has always been an independent country. Even if the US allows Texas or California or any other states to go solo, that doesn’t mean we must follow suit. We don’t put our nose into other people’s business. We certainly hate it if someone wants to put his or her nose into our business.
Preach the notion that small is beautiful to your fellow westerners if you like, but we want to run our country our own way.
Some westerners’ self-entitlement and arrogance is so ridiculous to the point that they ignore the fact that it is Trump who is expecting a call from his counterpart, not the othe way around. Yeah, China keeps collapsing. In fact, it has collapsed…with laughter.
I am a better debater in Chinese. If you do speak idiomatic Chinese, pls let me know. Tks.
Regarding toilets, in public rest rooms on holidays you can see people line up before squat toilets while leaving sitting toilets unoccupied. The main reason is that we Chinese don’t like skin contact with strangers for fear of hygiene issues even though the contact is indirect when sharing toilets with strangers. I bet many of them don’t realize the othe advantage of squat toilets: they make it less likely for toilet users to have diseases such as haemorrhoids and intestinal fistula. I got this piece of knowledge from the book Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ.
As for mattresses, my understanding is that soft ones tend to distort our backbones. I could be wrong.
In regards to democracy, I also don’t think it is necessarily a good thing. If to practice medicine you need a doctor’s degree, to teach in school you need certain qualification, why don’t we need anything to prove that the voters understand politics and thus qualified to vote? Those preachers of democracy, please please don’t tell me that politics is not life-or-death issue and you get to choose the most qualified/intelligent leader with a population that received the notorious Happy Education.
What a looooong article for a person like me who is not so very good at English😅
Tks for telling your personal experience here in China. This article is well-written and scintillates humor. Pls forgive me if I use the wrong words😅
I reckon 90+% of the content here is accurate.
Regarding those food delivery guys riding scooters, I find them quite annoying too. They are always in such a rush to make more deliveries/money that they ignore the traffic law and risk the lives of themselves and others’.
Sadly, I have similar experiences here with some of my neighbors who always ignore the rules in regards to public spaces, etc. Since I don’t want to pick up a fight with them, I choose to shun them.
As for domestic violence, I don’t have any nationwide data on that. I was born into a well-educated family in a small city. My dad used to tell jokes and put a smile on my mom’s face after their arguments. He never beat her. It’s the same with my best friends’ families. Maybe that’s because we came from similar background, I guess. But domestic violence does exist. Years ago a neighbor was beaten up by her estranged husband who wanted a divorce. They called in the police that night.
Lastly, I want to point out that it is incorrect to juxtapose Taiwan with China and the other five nations because Taiwan never was, not is and will never be an independent country. When Japan snatched Taiwan from China in 1895, it had to sign an agreement with Qing Dynasty, the then regime of China. In 1945 when Japan was defeated, it returned Taiwan to KMT, the ruling party of China at that time. After being defeated by CPC, KMT fled to Taiwan and has been there since. But for the intervention of the US, we would have long taken back Taiwan. Besides, Taiwan was never widely acknowledged as an independent country in the international community.
That’s about all that I want to say here. Tks again for your excellent work.
My impression is that Mongolia was ceded by then ruling party of KMT in the 1940s. As to the rest of the territorial losses, they were all done when China was still weak and frail.
