Many commentators are interpreting the reopenings as signaling the end of the pandemic. Many of these commentators are those who deny the reality or seriousness of Covid-19, or deny the need for, or effectiveness of, the closedowns and social distancing and the need for, or usefulness of, masks. The pandemic and the official responses have...
  • Another misconception is that the young are more or less unaffected by the virus and should be free to go about. According to the World Health Organization’s Regional Director for Africa, “In terms of those who are infected [in Africa], younger people tend to be the majority who are infected, people between the ages of 25 up to about 45

That’s because Africa has the youngest population on earth. Back here in the developed world, a young person is more likely to die from a car accident than Covid-19. In order to improve your analysis, may I humbly suggest reading the 1954 book How To Lie With Statistics which many scientists today are using as a manual to get their manuscripts published rather than a cautionary tale.

Perhaps you remember how to lie with statistics but, with all due respect, I wonder if you can read. Dr Roberts had stipulated in the paragraph below that one that his observation is not about mortality but 1. morbidity, 2. contagion and perpetuation of the epidemic.

The former, by the way, is plenty bad enough also in the below-50 groups now that we start to discover all the durable damage to various viscera. As for the latter, why don't you (as I asked some other time here) just take an ax and give your granma forty whacks?

You are confusing contagion with symptoms. Yes, young people are far less likely to suffer symptoms, but that doesn't alter their capacity to catch then spread the disease.

  • For stating the obvious, conspiracy theorists will say that I am part of the conspiracy and morons will say that I favor a permanent lockdown,

No, what I am saying is that you have succumb to confirmation bias which is something we must all must guard against. This is evidenced by the fact that you have used virologists to justify lock downs instead of epidemiologists and those who know something about data analysis and statistics.

Virologists are not qualified to say how Covid-19 spreads. This is not their expertise.

whereas what I actually advocate is caution.

This assumes that the lock down policy which you advocate does not actually make Covid-19 deaths and infections worse – which is clearly not the case.

Contrary to what virologists and other experts say, the infection data shows that the Covid-19 virus is spread through the air and not by mystical droplets. This means that locking people up in unventilated rooms increases the concentration of the virus and increases Covid-19 infection and death. Outside, the virus is dispersed so even if you are laying on top of each other, there is no way to get a great enough concentration of Covid-19 to get infected.

An excellent interview with Maurice de Hond is below.

Note that not even Norway, the country most cited by the pro-lockdown crowd, thinks that lockdowns are unnecessary.

Epidemiologists really don't know virology. Virologists are the ones who might save my life. Epidemiologists might let me know what my odds are.

"This assumes that the lock down policy which you advocate does not actually make Covid-19 deaths and infections worse – which is clearly not the case."

There is zero evidence that lockdowns make deaths and infections worse.

One of the most locked down countries is Japan and it has very few cases and a ridiculously low death rate for its population: 16,700 cases and 867 deaths for a population of 126,500,000.

  • The correlation between ascribed per capita coronavirus deaths by state and the percentages of residents in each state who report being "extremely concerned" about coronavirus is a vigorous .71. Seeing is believing, as they say. The demographic and partisan divides have become starker as time has gone on. We're getting close to the point where...
  • @Mark G.
    @Jackbnimble

Cuomo just reversed his policy of requiring nursing homes to take coronavirus patients from hospitals. This is an indirect admission he made a mistake and was at least partially responsible for the large number of deaths in New York. You do have to give him some credit for reversing course instead of doubling down. This reversal will save lives. He is also requiring twice a week testing for nursing home staff and that's a good idea. Over a third of deaths in New York are in nursing homes. The high number of deaths is not surprising since WHO said about half of European deaths were in nursing homes and many other states are showing high death rates in nursing homes.

The general lock downs may have unfortunately taken the focus off nursing homes and the older population in general. Spending more time, effort, and money on isolating high risk individuals and testing those who come in regular contact with them looks in hindsight like it would have been a better policy. Florida did a good job of this and had fairly low death rates considering how many elderly retired people live there.

Sweden didn't shut down and showed you could have fairly low death rates in general but still had high death rates in nursing homes due to serious quality control issues. They turned many of their nursing home jobs over to low paid immigrants who didn't follow directions on caring for patients and preventing the spread of the disease because they aren't very intelligent, can't speak Swedish, and don't care about a bunch of old Swedes who don't belong to their ethnic group. That turned out not to be a good idea. The Swedes should have had children to take care of them in their old age instead of inviting in large numbers of third world immigrants and then expecting them to take good care of them.

It seems that you have studied history at an English school. It is well known and well documented fact that the bombing of civilians was initiated by Churchill, who bombed Berlin seven times before the Germans started retaliating. Churchill’s aim was to divert the Luftwaffe from fully concentrating its war effort against the RAF and stated on many occasions that the best way to defeat Germany was through aerial warfare.

Aerial bombing of cities in fact started during WW1. Germany adopted the tactic on a massive scale during its 1939 invasion of Poland, deploying several thousand aircraft to that end.

Britain began bombing Germany in May 1940, two days after the German air attack on Rotterdam: targets included oil plants and other civilian industrial targets that aided the German war effort, such as blast furnaces that at night were self illuminating.

"The Jules Verne, a variant of the Farman F.220 of the French Naval Aviation, was the first Allied bomber to raid Berlin: on the night of 7 June 1940 it dropped eight bombs of 250 kg and 80 of 10 kg weight on the German capital.

Allied bombing of Berlin was for sometime thereafter sporadic. Germany's attempt to defeat Britain by massive air attacks on London and other cities, began in September, 1940.

I have those dates from Trikipedia ( but they are probably correct) not my English school where history, for me, ended while Otto von Bismark was still German Chancellor.

I'm not sure why we have a lockdown anymore. Are we trying to extinguish the virus? If so, what is the plan for that other than "sit down and shut up in your house." THe lockdown might have made sense when we didn't know if the hospitals would be overloaded. Now we do: they weren't, and NYC just sent back the naval hospital ship because the capacity isn't needed. We are unlikely to overload hospitals in NYC next round, given the immense numbers of dead from the first round. Less affected places will have a crush like NYC, but we can guess they also won't get overwhelmed.

That was known as "flatten the curve." Keeping everyone locked down beyond flattening the curve makes no sense, unless the authorities are going to try to kill the virus. Except: the virus got out and is in every country. So, even if the USA could exterminate it, we would need to have borders shut until its exterminated EVERYWHERE. Which means a coordinated global effort. Which maybe is the goal; I don't know.

It would have been very easy for media with resources like NBC and The NY Times to get a copy of the death certificate. However, as usual, NBC news and The NY Times chose to rely on rumours instead getting hard data which could destroy their narratives. Note that Bishop Gerald O. Glenn had severe diverticulitis which resulted in frequent fevers and sinus infections which makes Covid-19 as the cause of death even more suspect.

Second, contrary to the liars at The NY Times, Bishop Gerald O. Glenn DID practice social distancing. Quote from his daughter:

When he decided to have services, he was very clear in posting signs and having hand sanitizer, and wearing gloves and not congregating with people after service, during service, People were asked to sit six feet apart. Family members sat together. That’s it. After service, there was no talking and hanging around. Everyone left.

Finally, although some of the bishop’s family members are apparently infected with Covid-19, I can find no information regarding any illness they may have.

Bishop Gerald Glenn was born in 1953. Granted that is not really 'old old' by today's standard, but if this is the best the pro-Panic side has, it's kind of tacit admission that the virus is NOT randomly killing healthy people in their prime.

With the mountains of data we now have, it's safe to say "random deaths of healthy prime-age people" due to the Corona Apocalypse Virus never happens (statistically speaking).

    severe diverticulitis

A 2014 paper gives the survival rates for patients hospitalized with various degrees of diverticulitis:

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4197364/

It can be a serious condition, and there are certain death rates by the 100-day, 5-year, and 10-year intervals after a hospitalization with this condition.

All deaths are individual tragedies, but if there are 20,000 people with this condition in the Richmond area and a handful die in 2020, within the statistically expected number, that is not news nor cause for alarm. It is reckless and irresponsible to "wave bodies" at people to scare them.

Democrats are modestly less sure than Republicans, though that's likely accounted for entirely by non-white Democrats. This comes from a 2017 YouGov poll asking respondents if it was a mistake...
  • The Unnecessary Invasion?

It’s worse than unnecessary. The US entry into WWII and before that, supplying weapons to Churchill actually caused the Holocaust. Anyone wanting to read the real history of why the Holocaust occurred and how WWII turned the US from a Republic into a national security state should read Human Smoke and The Good War that Wasn’t

To very briefly summarize the arguments in these books which contain many citations and references:

The Nazis wanted to deport the Jews, No country, including the US would take them. The British even blocked their entry into Palestine and Madagascar.

Churchill, with the help of the US put a starvation blockade on Germany. As a result, Germany didn’t have enough food to feed all its people so it exterminated the Jews and other undesirables rather than starve them to death. This is also why Germany invaded the USSR – to get the breadbasket of Europe, the Ukraine.

  • 500+ confirmed cases and closing on 20 deaths as of today. It seems to be highly virulent, much more so than SARS, which took 4 months to spread out of China vs. a couple of weeks with the Wuhan coronavirus. It's already in the US, and, from today, in Russia. Live updates here. The nice...

I feared he might say beef, as is the custom in India. But pig is nearly as bad - or worse because it is more economical and its cuts encompass a variety of tastes.

I don't know Chinese eating habits well enough to say whether they really eat stranger stuff on the average, or whether it is simply that the large population means that there are more eccentrics. But it is interesting to think about: suppose we assumed Chinese really did eat everything that moved, I wonder if it might be partly explained by them having appreciably longer intestines. Or would that be a minus, when eating strange stuff? Maybe, the need to develop a long intestines would just be a concomitant to seeking nutrition from weird places?

It’s neither. First of all China is a huge country and the regional diets vary greatly. Like is true around the world, including Europe and the US, the traditionally poorer sections of China had to supplement their diet with non-livestock animals in order to get their protein.

An example from the old TV comedy The Beverly Hillbillies caricaturing poor US southerners diet follows.

Mr Drysdale: What are you cooking Granny?
    Granny: Snyder Swamp Stew
Mr. Drysdale: Why is it called Snyder Swamp Stew?
Granny: Because it’s got all the critters from Snyder Swamp in it.
