Obviously Trump supporting conservative Jews are a minority of Jews overall, and a small proportion of all the Trump supporting demographics. Thus if Trump were merely interested in appointing someone to the position from among his supporters, it would make more sense to appoint a non-Jewish person, since the overwhelming majority of his support comes from non-Jewish people. Would Jews, particularly Trump supporting Jews, really get offended if the position did not go to a Jewish person? I have not heard of other demographic groups feeling this way about the Fed Chair position.

One has to marvel at Trump. Before announcing his candidacy in 2015, immigration was moot. There was a complete consensus and border walls were off the agenda. He single-handedly changed politics and the course of history. Now he is upending the American empire. Haley, Mattis, McMaster, and Kelly are gone. Hopefully, Bolton and Pompeo will follow. I agree that NYC is so desirable a place to work for Jews that it draws them strongly. As far as systemic nepotism is concerned, one instance doesn’t prove a trend. If the playing field is unlevel as a result of sharp elbows, nepotism, etc., there should be evidence in the relative ethnic/religious makeup of the NYU faculty as a whole.

The faculty of NYU, particularly in the professional schoools, is 40-50% Jewish. Without doxxing myself, let me just say that I know of whence I speak. There are sharp elbows and nepotism not only in hiring of faculty but in promotion to leadership positions. The hiring and personnel decisions in these NY academic institutions is unbelieveable.

Yes, it is extreme, but in New York it is not as unusual as you seem to believe, and I speak as a native of the city. As far as Israelis go, I have met a couple of nice ones, but there is a quartile of them who are wildly, irresponsibly aggressive. These Israelis are tough, mean people, and don’t think much of getting somebody fired from their job for some inane reason. I dislike them intensely.

This story jibes well with my own experience of working in a heavily Jewish academic organization in New York. The Jews associate exclusively with other Jews. They view their gentile colleagues in purely instrumental terms—what can you do for me? They genuinely dislike white Christians and tolerate us as necessary to achieve their aims. The people they get along with tend to be conscientious and agreeable, people who can put up with them and do their bidding without friction. People with more moxie and aggressiveness in New York often come into conflict with Jews.

It should not be lost on anyone that this Ronell episode happened in New York, where Jews have strength in numbers and community. Would Ronell be able to get away with this kind of behavior in Urbana-Champaign? Another way inbreeding can occur is in an endogamous population that has gone through a bottleneck. Ashkenazi Jews are the classic example. They had a very small population 20-25 generations ago. Harpending is wrong to say there was no bottleneck. All geneticists know there was. As a result there are many Ashkenazi diseases such as Tay-Sachs or familial dysautonomia. It’s the result of a remote history of inbreeding, that is a founder effect. Other populations that are bottle necked include Finns, Sardinians, and Micronesians.
