I’m not looking to pick a fight with you. You were saying that a large proportion of Asians were atheist. This isn’t necessarily what Chinese folk religion entails. From Wikipedia:

In that passage there at least two mentions of “gods”. Perhaps it’s a semantic debate that depends on the definition of “god”, but I am not fully persudaded that Chinese folk religion is atheistic. I completely accept that it has no equivalent of Abrahamic monotheism. For me “god” is a slightly nebulous concept. I would define a “god” as an entity combining the following qualties.

1) It is non-corporeal
2) It is prayed to and/or sacrificed to by humans
3) It has sphere of influence

So either Chinese folk religion has far less of these entities than I imagine that it does or we are not agreeing on definitions. No meaningful dialog can happen unless definitions are agreed to.

I don’t agree that hate is good. I don’t believe that an intelligent super-being presides over reality, but I agree with what most of what Jesus taught about morality. What I think is that telling everyone that hate is bad and then openly hating people who aren’t in ideological conformity with you, is a truly scummy behaviour. As a matter of fact, yes. It exists in Christianity. Jesus said, “you reap what you sew”. As with everything, there may be more to it, but that’s the only level of understanding that we need.

There is nothing irrational about it. It’s a law of intention reflection. Your intentions reflect back on you. In truth it’s not even about your deeds and words. It’s what you intend that results in karma, but deeds and words result in more powerful karma than thoughts by themselves because the intentions behind deeds and words are stronger. If you are implying that I don’t have concrete answers to your question, then you are right. I’ve think I’ve heard multiple conflicting answers to your question and I haven’t really studied up on this. All all say is this, karma ripens when causes and conditions allow. That implies that the karma needed to be born a human may not be sufficient to be born as a human. The conditions also have to be present. In the meantime you might be born as some other kind of animal or born in another realm altogether. I’ve also heard one other thing that I won’t go into here.

Regarding the earth being immolated. If the earth were immolated then every sentient being on the earth would deserve it. Karma is always justice. Everything that happens to every sentient being is always just. That’s a hard pill for many to swallow and one reason why many people won’t accept Buddhism.

It is demonstrably a bigger problem when people say that there is no God and Hell and therefore they can do whatever they please.

You don’t need God in order to have karma and you don’t need God in order to have hell. Just ask any Buddhist. Many of the Pagans of the ancient world already had these conceptions too. These ideas pre-existed Christianity, and they will arise wherever sentient life arises, because they’re the truth. If you complicate things with God you can create all kinds of trouble. People will never accept that a good God would have created the conditions for evil, and those people are right. That means that the very idea of God is going to create misery because it automatically pits the true believers against skeptics. Right now is an example. We shouldn’t be having this argument, even if we are both talking in the spirit of good will.

My view on God is this. I do not believe in God. I believe that reality is true metaphysical nothing (TMN) which is all it could possibly be, because it couldn’t originate from anything else. It is because reality is this, that we have order. It’s akin to a+-a = 0. TMN implies order by its very nature. It’s what it is, and it’s outside any grasping or knowing, or even being. It just radiates the odd beam of light which illuminates people as to its true nature, but it’s the light that is seen, never it. Our understanding of the order we already see is where we get our sense of what is beautiful and, by extension, what we desire. What we desire certainly has an effect on evolution. However, there is no divine intelligence directing it. There is no intelligent design, but sometimes, to us, it may appear that intelligent design exists.

I don’t like having to say this, but God is a falsehood. In most cases it doesn’t make much difference if you believe in God or not. All that matters is if you have right intentions. Both actions and words follow intentions. Beliefs are not that important. However, beliefs can be a problem. For instance, it’s a problem when certain people say that God favours them, and they can do whatever they please because of that, and it’s a problem when cerrtain people or say that others will go to hell just because those others don’t believe in God or some specific dogma. That’s why God isn’t that great of an idea, even if it’s harmless more often then not.

I’m going to add one further thing to my previous comment.

Modern day churches seem to be making obedience to status quo politics a sort of holy virtue. I know for a fact that many churches are now enthusiastically engaging in Covid LARP-ing, even closing their doors when requested. I’m inclined to point out to them, that, anyone can do this. We’eve already got all kinds of secular institutions for that. The churches may be digging their graves with their eagerness to be one of the cool kids (which they will never be in any case).

I quit Christianity about 25 years ago. I flirted with Paganism and then I became a generic Buddhist. Like I’ve been saying, I do not know what the originators of Christianity truly wanted. In truth, many of the originators probably had different motivations (some wholesome, some not), and Christianity became a focus of those different motivations. Some of Christianity is like Buddhism. For instance when Jesus said “as you sow, ye shall reap” is very Buddhist. Likewise his affirmation of life’s perpetuation even after death is Buddhist, although Buddhist’s do not believe that that existence in any realm (heaven, hell or on earth) is eternal and we do not believe in God.

I don’t like beating up on Christianity. In some ways it makes me feel awful like I’m beating up something innocent, but I cannot deny that I also have parallell feelings of some kind of deep betrayal when I think of Christianity. I still consider myself to be a Christian to an extent, because I think there’s enough common ground between it and Buddhism for me to say that, and I still take communion when in church, just a token of good will.

The following is what I think Christianity did wrong.
1) It didn’t cleanly separate itself from Judaism. One day God is an evil genocidalist. The next day he is the God of love. This can never be reconciled. Apparently God so loves the world that he will curse all those who object to his chosen one’s actions, no matter what those actions are. In the same vein, Jews have successfully exploited Christianity’s Jewishness historically. Cromwell let them return to England based on some Biblical belief and in America we are cursed with the Scofield bible.
2) It practiced race denialism. The “no Jew and no Greek” part of the bible is unmistakably race denialism. I believe that religion should just be focused on the truth and everything else should be subserviant, even morality. I don’t believe that any religion should celebrate racial differences, but neither should a religion deny them. Anything real should be acknowledged for what it is. The no Jew and no Greek stuff goes along with the “not of this world” idea. I would argue that we are very much a part of this world. We don’t have souls. Karma is the cause of our perpetuation after death and it is not due to the existence of a soul. Denying that we belong in this world where our desires led us to, will only lead to suffering.
3) Free will. Some Buddhists believe in free will, but it has never been a central part of Buddhist thinking. The idea of free will contradicts what we observe when we observe that some people are born with inherent tendencies, some of which can be sociopathic. If you believe that they have free will even so, then ask yourself why a loving God would give people harder challenges than others? Wouldn’t he at least distribute life’s challenges equally? The free will idea becomes even more problematic when we observe entire population groups behaving sociopathically relative to the White norm. The fundamentalist Christian (and the normie conserative) will put it down to free will, and they will say that Blacks just have to use their free will and everything will be OK. The leftist Christian will say that it’s because of White racism, and we Whites must use our free will to become less racist. Free will was a sort of mysterious force invoked to explain differences in human behaviour and I note that “racism” is another mysterious force now added on top of free will. It’s a tower of artificial philosophical contrivances invented by Jews, and that’s an area in which Jews really score. I’m expecting a book about the holocaust to be added to the New Testament any day now.

What you are saying is incorrect. The law of karma only says that everything is just. If you are born with criminal tendencies, it’s just, because of whatever you did in the past. If you’re born with criminal tendencies, that could be because you were unduly cruel to someone who was born with similar tendencies.

This is in contrast to the Abrahamic faiths that put everything down to free will. The idea of free will cannot be reconciled with A) a just God and B) persons being genetically inclined to behaviour that will cause them to suffer.
