History rhymes. American history is no different.

A quiet intolerance towards blacks is being readopted across a large portion of the nation, primarily among Asians, Hispanics, and younger people. The modern attitude lacks the virulence of old-school Southern racism, since it also lacks the catalysts of unforgiving rural poverty, obsessions with racial sexual purity, and the electoral Pandora’s Box formed by a large, illiterate black population.

Among the 35 and younger crowd (which does not read the NYT, btw), these attitudes are more prevalent. Black culture is no longer emulated by young whites. Younger crowds also get their news online, where they are just as likely to see videos of “blacks behaving badly” as quirky cats. This leaves an impression.

The biggest Civil Rights issues of our day basically deal with marriage and job laws for Gays and Transgenders, not blacks, which as a group tend not to engage in either. Facebook walls (a better barometer of public sentiment than Twitter) remain noticeably silent about black issues.

People tend to form their core beliefs before the age of 28 or so. When they have children, they become less focused on societal injustices which do not impact their own household. Also consider that Asians and Hispanics, while not fond of conservative whites, also lack any sort of historical guilt with regard to civil rights. None of this bodes well for blacks in 10 years, when these groups politically coalesce.

Maybe the level of acceptance among Germans and Japanese of American GI's taking "war brides" compared to Iraqis has something to do with the fact that we utterly destroyed Germany and Japan. Perhaps after they looked at Dresden and Hiroshima and Tokyo and Berlin they said, "You'd like some of our womenfolk? By all means…" It might also have to do with the fact that American IQ levels were then comparable to those of the Axis nations.

While it may lack the simple elegance of Crimson Rich's logo, I think the fifth plate from Hogarth's Harlot's Progress makes an apt analogy for America's present state:
