South Africa has had Nigerians since the 90s. They have a reputation for controlling the drug and prostitution trade. The movie "Jerusalema" has some Nigerian drug dealers who meet sticky end, if I remember correctly. There have been black anti-foreigner riots ("xenophobia") in South Africa for years, with real and imaginary refugees targeted.

District 9 was loosely based on black South African "xenophobia".

As for the white farmers, back in the day, they'd have saddled up and hunted down the killers.. But they've softened up a lot, and are paying the price. Mbeki ended the Kommandos, but the last decade has so weakened the government that they could easily be re-formed if the farmers had the will to protect themselves, with the government unable to stop them-or even reluctantly supporting them. Instead, the Boer are being emasculated and turned into victims.

I think they like shopping at Amazon, but dislike shopping at Walmart. Because Walmart is not a prestige brand. Not that Amazon is, per say, but you don't have to mix with the hoi polloi. It's more convenient besides. Liberals love Uber, despite not approving of it morally.

They still have this weird attachment to anything "tech"-related. It's like dot-com bubble nostalgia.

It's very surface-level, too. I'd imagine there are some pretty smart guys working for Wal-Mart behind the scenes, and there's probably some pretty serious technology as well, handling all their logistics. But since it's not primarily on the internet, it doesn't have the same cachet.

I mean, obviously, the fact that Sam Walton was some old guy from Arkansas, while Silicon Valley is a bunch of hip liberals plays a part, too. But in a weird way, it's like garden-variety liberals are sort of stuck in time, in Clinton's second term. I'm pretty sure that played a part in their love of Hillary, who had so little else going for her.

I also feel like that's why coffee bars and craft beer are still so big with these people. Both of those started to get big around 1997, and that's just where their heads are at still.

Not entirely different from how so many on the right are still pining for the 80s, just lamer.

Yes, the numbers of blacks lynched was always miniscule. Blacks slaughter each other today at horrendous rates and the victims include many children. Virtually all the blacks lynched were young males. Although I'm sure that there were completely innocent blacks who were lynched the overwhelming majority were in fact vicious criminals.

Could someone please remind Mr. Coates that reparations for slavery were already paid with the lives of over 700,000 dead in the Civil War. Those dead, for the most part, have no descendants to clamor for payments for the wrong done to them.
