RSSBack in the 90s Ricks wrote a good book on the USMC (“Making the Corps”) that was insightful and very sympathetic to the working class and its sons who were–and are–manning the Corps. He’s had articles in Foreign Policy for years now that are often good or at least interesting. But something happened to Ricks in the GWBush administration; he became very angry. It wasn’t just the usual leftist, anti-Bush sentiment, but more super angry, and the Trump years made him even more upset. It seems his anger at the right overcomes his common sense–something that happens to many on the left–so he makes these delusional statements that he actually believes.
This goes back to another idea on the right that lefties don’t actually believe what they say (e.g. look at their ‘revealed preferences’ etc.). All that NPR/MSNBC talk is just the left blowing off steam and just propaganda. But I gotta tell ya, most lefties actually believe their talking points. People can rationalize all sorts of things, especially the godless.
1. Don’t forget emergency medical techniques/practices have improved greatly since the late 80s/ early 90s, so the body count in 2020 would be much higher but for better medical treatment keeping those shot alive. At least one study indicated ‘but for contemporary medical treatments’ homicide numbers might be 300-400% higher. Not sure about that, but no doubt the body count would be much higher without great medical treatment and superb efforts by healthcare professionals.
