A few days ago I wrote: Today, Gates came out of the closet on the African population bomb. From Reuters: Africa's rapid population growth puts poverty progress at risk, says Gates Kate Kelland LONDON (Reuters) - Rapid population growth in some of Africa’s poorest countries could put at risk future progress towards reducing global poverty...
  • LoL- deh battle against poverty in Africa is lost, and the only question now is the terms of the population reduction.

Ol’ Malthus is making a comeback:

    http://www.fao.org/3/I9553EN/i9553en.pdf#page=22

Looky here- it has been sliding in places since 2005!

Low point for Africa was 2014- now comes doom.

The South African destruction of the large farms is the death knell for South Africa as a viable nation, baaaaby.

And now comes the end- a whole lot of hungry people- guess Europe had better get their act together before 100 million show up next, lolol…..

  • I'm fascinated that 1/3rd of Latino women think they are "strong enough to beat most people in a fist-fight" versus a little over 1/8th of white women.
  • As a very large man, I think the entire topic is essentially bunk. When I was 21, 6’2 and 245 pounds of fit muscle and strength, less than 1% of men could have beaten me. Yes, a bunch of them tried- and small tough drunk guys were the worst- going to for the sucker punch knock out.

Those I usually hurt- one guy had to have his orbital socket rebuilt after I hit him back with my right fist- just one shot back and he was done- 5’11 and 180. If you have done serious physical labor, your hands are hard. You hit really hard. You drink a bit, and people think you are soft. Smaller ones were funny- one called the cops on me after he came to- witnesses said he put his head down and charged at me- I just picked him up off the ground and swung his head into a steel door frame- out for fifteen minutes. The cops asked if I wanted him arrested for assault, I laughed.

I would never try to hurt friends- that was for fun, like wrestling and losing because I was drunk.

But I could flip the switch in a heartbeat- and very few understood that I was would get very angry very fast- just knock my glasses off and hit me, it comes back instantly.

I would note that my son has the same set of reactions, all good until you hit him in anger- then the Irish is up and ready to go. That is the hard part of this stuff, if you are hardwired that way, you try to avoid the conflicts.

Loving the fight? A bit, but the aftermath, not at all. My favorite trick got to be getting them to take a swing and pushing them through the back door of the bar and pulling it shut. By the time they ran all the way around the building they would either start with the bouncers or would begin to think twice about going another round.

Girls were never even a challenge. Had a black belt karate girl hit me. I laughed, a small bruise was it. She tried to throw me, no dice. I did wrestle in high school, so I just sagged when she went to throw me.

Physical conflict exists when you drop below the WEIRD horizon, and you are either ready for it, or it will scare you into a gun or avoidance.

Hitler was actually the German national socialist Fidel Castro. I mean national socialist in its generic meaning. All ethno leaders are national socialists and Hitler from a defeated and broken country was the German version. His misfortune was he came slap bang against the global Jewish community while Castro came up against the Cuban oligarchs and their American allies. In Hitler's case unlike Castro the (((tail))) waved the dog. Hitler's banking policies, international barter and employment policies effected the greatest recovery of an economy in history. When the Bengla Desh economist Yannis brought into Asia the same economic policies, Yannis won the Nobel Peace Prize, wrong one, it should have been the Nobel economics prize.

No, Nixon DID NOT push more into it. Nixon began deescalating the war as soon as he took office. He just didn't do it the way the leftists who had turned against the war wanted him too. The Cambodia "incursion" was not an escalation nor did it make a "wider war." The North Vietnamese were already taking over Cambodia and using it as a sanctuary and supply base for their operations in South Vietnam. Those of us who were actually there at the time applauded the move as something that should have been done years before. Incidentally, we also applauded the National Guard at Kent State.

I don’t for a moment believe that the ‘saintly’ President John Kennedy planned to end the war but was assassinated by dark, rightwing forces, as is claimed. This is a charming legend. Richard Nixon, Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson all feared that a withdrawal from Vietnam would lose them the next election. Republicans were still snarling over ‘who lost China’.

I didn't like Kennedy either, but go back and reread the newspapers from the early days of the Kennedy administration. The oval office was bugged, and the information leaked in ways to embarrass Kennedy and UN Ambassador Adelai Stevenson. There is only one way that could have happened. Eisenhower installed those bugs before he left. These same bugs brought down Nixon in the Watergate crisis. The swamp wanted war, and they pulled the rug out from under both presidents as soon as they brought peace.

And a new Nixon in office….he vowed to get out too- and yet pushed more into it…simply amazing.

He promised to get out...and he did get us out. The peace treaty was announced just before the election in 1972. He knew it was his only hope for re-election. The Vietnamese disputed some of the terms, and that resulted in the Christmas bombing that year. The American withdrawal began in January 1973.

Trump promised to get us out of the Middle East. We should give him some rope. Maybe he hangs himself, or just maybe he can pull it off. He will need to be re-elected in three years.

this is not about how well the West's technology, handed to or stolen by Israel, can splatter villagers. A twenty something girl in Langley is perfectly capable of sitting in an air conditioned room and pressing some buttons and firing a drone-launched Hellfire missile and killing some mujahedeen (and a few old women and children too) That doesn't make America manly or virile.

  • America, always taking in these hard working immigrants who think they can reap the rewards from the system, and not end up supporting it and becoming part of it.

The only way the East Asian bunch don’t end up like everybody else is if they maintain exclusivity based on their genetic endowment. On the other hand, the great mixing bowl of America tends to suck in all minorities and blend them into America over time. After all, aside from the hardcore Amish, Hassidic, and a few other communities, most of America in four generations of city life ends up extremely sorted by genetic ability (which may end up replicating the Indian caste experience).

The really funny part is the predominant upper class mostly maintains their position, but Gregory Cochran and Henry Harpending’s boiling off theories apply to all populations- so what are we selecting for in America?

It appears we are selecting for meritocratic entrance to various levels of society through educational selection- which explicitly discriminates against those who lack genetic ability or the cultural package to meet those hurdles- I would note that many outsider groups explicitly discriminate internally against participation in the predominant system (do well in school, you are ostracized by the social structure of the community).

Now looking at Tiger Mother’s cultural package- gee are we set up for our https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine-rank_system examinations to preserve our place in society, or what? And when those children fall out of that rigid system into the predominant culture, they will rise or sink based on the class based cultural package, plus their genetic advantage in exploiting that package.

One of the problems of large scale immigration is the belief that the cultural package from the old country will thrive and survive the predominant culture- when almost all evidence from America indicates the primary culture will imprint on immigrants.

    For good or bad.

I find that racism is really discrimination against substandard cultural packages by the predominant part of the culture that actually rules America- in short, if you are a gang member, low education, then you get fed into the criminal justice machine- and guess what, that applies if you are black, white (look at the educational attainment of white prisoners), native American, etc.

While we seem to want to blame genetics and implicitly race for so much, the cultural package that comes with various parts of society is also complicit in individual and collective outcomes.

I guess the part that makes it all difficult is one realizes that the choice to participate in various cultural packages is free and open, but the nurture part of upbringing will be so strong in most that they will never exit their predominant social milieu during their lifetimes.

For the cost of two F35 fighters, everyone will be in the system, registered, and either deported or taxed extra for living here.

  • Well, if you accept that populations differ greatly in genetic components, then you have to accept that the nature part of the genetics may lead to different social outcomes.

After all, we are finding that extrapolation of WEIRD dynamics to populations outside of western civilization does not work. See all the economics research on group dynamics.

Of course, saying it makes one a racist, not a realist.

But given how people turn into tribal idiots at the first real threat to their settled worldview, well, humanity has a long way to go to understand itself.

Ahilan, how much damage would it do to your viewpoint of humanity to accept what Fisher wrote?

The really funny part is how difficult it is to accept that you are simply a random outcome of sperm vs egg competition, and your success is dependent on the survival of your dependents.

As a male, think of the number of men of each generation that did not have children. They are the genetic branches that have been pruned from humanity- stretching back to the first bands of humans to leave Africa. The fact we prune so many from each generation means evolution is still measuring fitness, unlike a lot of animals with fairly stable dna.

So, while race is a handy construct, the interesting part is Fisher is even hinting at better combinations producing humans which will be even more successful.

As far as I am concerned, the odds of successful rebellion are near to zero- only in the wide open and empty spaces of the American West does anyone think there is a real chance.

Too much heroic media- or as a vet told me a few years ago- “Our fledgling rebels play act at it, they should see how nasty it really is in Iraq, with the torture, killings, ethnic cleansing, and true hatred that has happened since we knocked off Saddam and let loose what was already there in terms of underlying hatreds.” In short, we coddle our kiddies, unlike what has happened in the past where previous rebels were basically shot dead by the state. See SLA, MOVE, etc.

Now, when families are involved, it is probably a good idea to not push it too hard, the lessons of MOVE and Waco show that dead wimmin and chillens is bad pr.

Another good example is the low level conflict dissolution of the FLDS hegemony in Arizona/Utah. It had to happen, and btw the Bundy’s are related to a lot of folks in the area who are FLDS- so rebellion against the state is a natural thing for them.

As for their occupation- eff em- arrest them, and take away their rights to their toy guns.

That would serve them right- no more popguns.

Post constitutional my ass- they have more rights to guns than folks did 200 years ago- after all they can go and buy them for dang near nothing, whereas 200 years ago it took 3-6 months wages to buy a decent used gun.

Well regulated militia clause is of course, totally ignored- and these morons are certainly not regulated.

Just more idiots like Shay- which our founding fathers promptly put down after trying to talk sense into them.

The frontiers are always full of idiots- we need a new frontier to send them out to settle and get rid of them from civilization. Because they can’t handle civilization- it requires following the rules and living within boundaries.

I particularly like the native americans telling them to get out of the wildlife refuge- it was ours before you came to complain the feds stole it from you ‘uns!

I'm not an American but I'm pretty sure that the term "regulated" in the 2nd amendment refers to training - not bureaucratic 'regulations' as such.

I've listened to people like you type/speak in my own country for decades. The manner in which you do so does little but push your own nation closer to the brink. They are words of arrogance, pride and a sort of radical liberalism that deepens already gapping divides.

Good for you for making things worse. You should be proud.

He could have his pick, plus they would actually be grateful for better food and some freedom.

And it will happen, because Americans are fed up with the social costs.

And their kids can go with and show up when they are 18.

  • LoL, Razib, thanks to the media, women have long thought they are now the equals of men.

On the other hand, I see in watching youth basketball the exit of all the girls after age 12 from the basketball teams, where before that age they can play with the boys. They physically can not compete with most of the boys after the beginning of puberty. Indeed most of them are shocked by the rough and tumble in basketball, let alone football or wrestling.

I further recall in my college days a young lady hitting me with all her strength in my chest, and my laughter at her actions- she stopped when I grabbed her and lifted her off the ground while holding her arms. She was shocked at how easily I stopped her attacks. I weighed twice her weight (1.8 m, 125kg), , and lifted iron at the time. Quite simply 99% of women are overmatched by the same sized man, let alone one larger- and the size disparity can be tremendous.

Yet the fantasy is played out on a daily basis. Another young lady was quite proud of her black belt, but even then said that she would lose if someone larger managed to grapple with her.

One of the most interesting things is the realization as a larger youth when my mother the nurse told me that I would have to be careful because I could literally knock out or kill with one blow, and that the number of women seriously hurt fighting with men coming to the Emergency Room was far larger than the number of men.

The only thing that equalizes in a fight is Mr. Colt’s product.

  • Upon reflection, I think the problem is related to the desire for safety as mentioned above- the fact that the institution is not guaranteeing a fair and safe life off campus is seen as “failing”. The reality is that today’s children do not seem to be raised with any awareness of how life is dangerous, and actions like roving around drunk may have serious long term consequences beyond a silly wascist comment by drunken frat boys.

The coddling of today’s children starts at a young age, when any physical contact is instantly reported, and schools can not even provide minimal discipline to students without parental reaction. Forty years ago as a public student in Texas, physical discipline was regularly used on elementary students, including the use of a wooden paddle. Violence between students was often met with a trip to the vice principle and immediate use of that paddle.

And today, we have a social justice model where higher institutions are swayed by protests, while young adults raised in educational institutions of permissive tolerance soon find the police don’t care and will administer corrective violence at the drop of a hat.

Is it better to teach the condign power of the state at a young age, or to allow it only to be used on “adults” in a random fashion? The really funny part is the sheer amount of privilege being used by the young woman shrieking at the Professor, with no apparent fear of retribution. The really funny part is in a fairly small institution, notice is taken of her willingness to attack, and all kinds of bureaucratic notes are taken to “dox” her if she steps over a line that she will not even be aware of the existence unless she consults the fine print of the student manual. The she will find out the power of the bureaucracy, which is slow in response, but will wait until she does not have her crowd backing her up.

Then when she gets to the real world, and some mean old boss lady gets that treatment of protest, the response may well be the security guard walk of shame with her box of desk clutter.

The University does no favors to encourage the thought of “home”, when in fact these children, for they act as children, are not being prepared for the real world. In loco parentis is dead, the age of majority is 18, and parents should train their children to be functional adults at that age, and not children shrieking for Mommy and Daddy to helicopter in and keep them safe.

Guess we need a Dean Wormer here: “Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.”

Well, the son is patronizing, and fat shaming is not allowed- so that leaves stupid.

But she got into Yale- ok, so elitist and stupid.

That shrieking crap was soooo emotional, she just needed some validation.

I would have said go home if you want home, this ain’t it, baaaby.

The real world will be much crueler to her than the University would ever dare because she will cry wascist. Lol.

  • Humans differ in paternal investment—the degree to which fathers help mothers care for their offspring. • Arrgh- missed the edit- only 1,000 of the primitives are left.

Further comments would include checking the pastoralists for milk compatability versus the hunter/gatherers.

We probably should start collecting dna from disappearing tribes to bank for posterity.

After all, they might have a mutation or two that could be adaptive in some other circumstance.

Like the seed bank in Svalbaard.

The other interesting thinking is the replacement of lower levels of the population by the elites through out competition over the long run. The Son Also Rises has shown the elites downward mobility still pushes the bottom into extinction. Is the average level of intelligence in China greater now than 2,000 years ago after ruthless selection by the scholar tests?

The comment about HG Wells is just the start, what happens when the rich can better select actual traits for their children.

  • The really funny part is nobody has commented on the really interesting part of the entire analysis: The https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadza_people are essentially dying off rapidly (only 1,0000 left) as they are being destroyed by the neighboring https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datooga_people, (est. at 90k and growing rapidly)who are themselves a branch of the Nilotic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nilotic_peoples people with significant genetic flow back into Africa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_E-M215_%28Y-DNA%29 .

The really funny part is this essentially shows modern genes replacing older genes in a rapid fashion, all the while people are arguing about the European replacement now evident in the gene records regarding Bell Beaker, etc.

What this really shows is that social genetics is especially ruthless in weeding out less competitive populations, even from marginal spaces.

That is the true lesson of science and while everyone likes to “preserve” primitive cultures, they are just going to be destroyed in competition with the most advanced cultures, including those cultures that have undergone past selections for traits that lead to more success in the modern setting.

  • How about someone who doesn’t give a shit about the middle east, and thinks we have been damned fools led into a sticky morass for decades.

You know what? I don’t like Hillary, and I don’t like Netanyahoo, and I don’t like most of the shit I read about how we are responsible for everything in the Middle East since fricking 1900.

Screw ’em. They are responsible for their own mess, and the fact that we meddle means we are damned stupid. But meddling isn’t control.

But then I see the big ass mosque that was built on I-17 in Phoenix every damned day, and realize we are importing this tribal bullshit here, and that pisses me off too.

I'm not sure who you believe you're arguing with. Three-quarters of your latest isn't disputed by me, at least. What seems to anger you is a suppressed realization that your Uncle Sam's "foreign policy" is one of increasingly violent imperialism that ill serves you and most Americans.

Your anger may abate if you let go of the emotional need to rationalize the actions of and minimize the harms inflicted by those under whose rule you live. Dropping the "we" when referring to them may be good place to start.

Or, just keep sucking your thumb with "your" flag, like Linus's blanket, held in your other hand.

Yes.take care of your Tax Dollars . Don't spend it on defense . Don't give it as aid to African, Egyptian ,Indonesian, and Honduran military .

Well ,you cant. You see years ago Tom Friedman reminded us that without Raytheon ,McDonald wont be able to sell the Vanilla smoothies and French fry.
Without those aid to Indonesia or Africa,we wont be able to mine and cut the trees .The locals well adorned and embroidered with US high tech keep the peace .

"But then I see the big ass mosque that was built on I-17 in Phoenix every damned day, and realize we are importing this tribal bullshit here, and that pisses me off too."

Have you ever tried to notice or fathom the constant barrage in support of the battles in the Middle East from 700 Club ,from the mega churches in Bible Belt,Evangelical conventions, and from religiously instigated Republican election pitches ? It is everyday . The war doesn't and hasn't advanced neither American interests neither the chances of Christian conversion among Arabs . Actually it has hardened their hatred against both .

So who pays these demented skunks or who make their life worth living and ideas worth believing ? Somebody must be adding a lot of dough and publicity and veneer of meanings to their otherwise lying double lives Or it is possible they have started truly believing in their own canard after hearing it so long.

If the mosque had intoruduced a possibility of unwestern elements in American lay of the land, so have the Mega church,700 Club,CUFI and positioning of the Republican mind by the Evangelic .
In reality the later ,have it got already much ,corrupted ,damaged and beyond redemption. Founding Fathers didn't want entanglement to foreign allegiance . But that is what exactly has infected American psyche .
The morons from these organizations even openly say that Israeli interest enjoys superiority to Americans ,that America woud be destroyed if it did not support Israel. They flock to New York City downtown to remind Schumer that he should use his position to secure Israeli interest even when the question of American interests are involved and at jeopardy .

How did America get there ? Not from the mosque . It is from the very Amerucan religious experiences ,but both imposed and foreign , and America never noticed it how it sneaked upon it.

It was not war but the commerce that was in their manifesto of pursuit of happiness . It was commerce that influenced the decision of Teddy Roosevelt to wage war ,or US to occupy Hawai,go to Central America or force Japan open its closed door policy .
But today we wage wars and wreck commercial interests . We wage wars against the advice of the business lobbies . It is quite an inversion and quite a bit of achievement .

  • Why do we own this shit?

Are these people in Libya incapable of doing anything without Hillary’s instigation?

As for Syria, that storm has been brewing for 50 flipping years, and you want to blame the politician who last stirred in some more arms?

In short, stop simplistic cause and effect, and realize the rest of the world has real agency in their own damned countries.

How many times Syria have been subjected to coups at US instigation and supports from 1945?
    Any idea?

How Saddam was airlifted by US,Israel,Jordan in 1959 after his failed first attempt to kill Iraqi PM?
US have gone to wars against other countries on suspicion and allegations that those countries were plotting to topple the government or trying illegally ( ie terrorism ) to shape/modify US polices . Remember Zimmerman Telegram. Do you? US war against Afghanistan in 2001 ?

Where does the right that Hillary says she has to intervene in Libya come from? Her old Law Farm ? or Protestant Ethics? Or form kowtowing to the people who behaves the way Lantos did on Kuwaiti babies and incubator?

Don't you think there something very unlike Ottoman with these 2 pictures - a woman is accusing of rape that is patently false and Ghaddafi is dying from the rape that's is in front of Camera - Hilary come home after arranging that the blood soaked arms looted from Libya flows to Syria knowing sure the Syrian women will get raped ,Christian would be displaced ,and migrants will be attacked and the vacuum will draw more perverts ?

To make this sink in your brain .let me give you an example: do the following

Not knowing the future or the consequences is no excuse-
